KISS reunite with Destroyer producer Bob Ezrin and along with new drummer Eric Carr produce their first and only concept album. The album is a commercial failure, alienating many fans who find the coming of age tale of heroic journey pretentious and overwrought. KISS return to the studio with Vini Poncia, producer of the Peter Criss solo album, only to have Anton Fig, fresh from playing on the Ace Frehley solo album play drums on eight of the nine tracks. Poncia elicits strong vocal performances from the band, heavily filters and treats the lead guitar, and lends a pop sheen to the material. The album yields the disco influenced hit song "I Was Made For Lovin' You" which exposes the band to a new audience while alienating some die hard fans. The laid back rhythm and blues and saccharine pop offered up on the debut solo album of drummer Peter Criss was a bridge too far for many young KISS fans at the time, but catchy songs like "That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes," with Peter's signature shuffle and a powerful vocal performance, and the autobiographical "Hooked on Rock and Roll," both elevated by the guitar work of Steve Lukather, are stand out tracks and the poignantly haunting cinematic ballad "I Can't Stop the Rain," is a worthy successor to Beth and Hard Luck Woman.

At the peak of their career KISS capture the over the top energy of their live performance with producer Eddie Kramer while providing five new studio cuts that offer a promising new direction but rely heavily on at least one outside musician to get there. While arguably less "live" than their previous live record (at least 3 cuts were recorded during sound checks & there are extensive overdubs), Kramer's creative use of overdubbed cannons, looped crowd noise, and strategic editing of Paul Stanley's vocal patter help to seamlessly create a KISS concert that never actually was, but ought to have been.
