Prof. Bridgette Wessels speaks to Irish poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin for the C21 Editions project, which is exploring how born-digital content like social media might be included in digital scholarly editions. Prof. Wessels and Annemarie explore what it means to be w rite in the age of social media. Bridgette Wessels is Professor of Sociology at the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on the development and use of digital technology and services in social and cultural life. This includes digital services and communication in the public sphere, everyday life and civic life, social and digital inequalities, as well as specific areas such as telehealth, mobile communication and privacy in digital communication. Annemarie Ní Churreáin is a poet from the Donegal Gaeltacht. Her books include Bloodroot (Doire Press, 2017), Town (The Salvage Press, 2018) and The Poison Glen (The Gallery Press, 2021). She is the poetry editor at The Stinging Fly magazine. C21 Editions is an international collaboration between University College Cork, the Digital Humanities Institute at the University of Sheffield, and the University of Glasgow. The project seeks to explore and make a direct contribution to the future of digital scholarly editing and digital publishing. The project was funded under the UK-Ireland Collaboration in the Digital Humanities, a joint initiative of the Irish Research Council (IRC) and the United Kingdom's Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

Welcome to the final episode of our 3-part series “Men’s Health Table Talk, Nutrition and Cancer related Andropause” by UCC student Dietitians Daniel Coakley and Emma Barrett.
So far on this series, we have spoken with RD Katie Johnston who provided us with some very insightful and evidence-based information about the nutritional consequences oftentimes faced by male cancer survivors as a result of their cancer treatment. We also chatted about the changes that occur in body composition along with the importance of evidence-based information when it comes to supplements and potential dietary changes.
In our second episode, we spoke with coach and personal trainer Aidan Hunter, who provided us with a very personal account of his own journey with cancer having faced testicular cancer twice in his mid 20’s. Aidan’s honest and candid discussion was a powerful reminder of how important early detection and screening is when it comes to cancer prevention.
For our final episode, we will explore evidence based recommendations to reduce cancer recurrence for male cancer survivors. These guidelines can also be applied to people listening who would like to reduce their risk of cancer.
In the second half of this episode, we will be chatting with Health Promotion Officer Shirley O’Shea about her expertise in public health and working with individuals with cancer. Shirly’s main role is centered around physical activity promotion with a special interest in exercise oncology. We explore the current services and support available for male cancer survivors going through or who have been through treatment. We also discuss strategies to encourage more men to access healthcare and health-related services, aiming to break the stigma surrounding men speaking openly about their health.

This week we’ve dedicated the episode to the legendary hip-hop producer and rapper J Dilla, broadcast the day after what would have been his 50th birthday. Dilla's pioneering work revolutionised the genre, essentially providing the baseline for Lofi HipHop as well as influencing many others like Neo-Soul, R&B, Jazz and Pop.
His use of soulful samples, intricate drum patterns and combination of Swung and Straight time created the conflicted time feel now called “Dilla Time”.
J Dilla was a key player in the Soulquarians group (that we often mention), collaborating with numerous artists, including A Tribe Called Quest, Common, and Erykah Badu.
Jay left behind a rich legacy of music that continues to inspire and influence artists across all genres to this day.

Niall Heffernan is celebrating two 10 year anniversaries in 2023. His long standing radio show Cosmosis, which started on UCC campus radio back in 2013, turns 10 this year. It switched to Dublin Digital Radio in 2017 and has become a ‘go to’ show for music purveyors looking for ‘rare gems and pieces of interest from everywhere and anywhere’. If you have been a regular on the ‘alternative’ music scene in Cork you will undoubtedly have stumbled upon the Ping Pong club nights and gigs which he ran alongside Albert Twomey. He has also been a teacher on American & Contemporary Literature, Film and Culture, and Dystopian Fiction at University College Cork.
We talk about his incredible achievement as a published author of an academic book that looks at the aftermath of the Cold War Zeitgeist on fiction, film, and television. The book, which also turns 10 this year, is entitled, ‘In The Shadow Of The Bomb’ The Legacy of the Cold War in Dr. Strangelove, End Zone, Crash and The Wire. Mary Crilly is the CEO of the Sexual Violence Centre Cork which is a non profit, community organisation that was set up on International Womens Day back in 1983 and it has been providing services to victims of sexual violence in Cork City and County for 40 years now.
She is one of the driving forces behind Safe Gigs Ireland. In 2019, University College Cork awarded her with the inaugural equality award for her role in promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion and in 2022 she was presented with the freedom of Cork.
We talk about her life as a crusader for the rights of sexual violence victims and also to play some music that is close to her cause.
Virginia O'Gara hails from Texas and through an eventful youth of working for Food Not Bombs in California, being a Spanish/English interpreter for touring punk rock bands in Mexico and becoming interested in permaculture whilst working on a farm in Guatemala she ended up in Ireland. She is one of the driving forces behind CUSP, the Cork Urban Soil Project which is about composting on a community scale. She is also the co-owner of the hugely popular raw-vegan food company, My Goodness.
She’s an activist, a punk, and an inspiring member of our community. Her story is worth a listen, Enjoy!

Professor Matt Campbell joins Mark and Brian on the podcast this week. Matt is an associate professor of genetics in Trinity College Dublin. This week, Mark and Brian are joined by Emeritus Professor Fergus Shanahan. Fergus Shanahan was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at University College Cork. Fergus attended medical school in University College Dublin where he graduated with honours in 1977 and was awarded a gold medal in medicine from the Mater University Hospital.
Professor Shanahan led a team of clinicians, clinician-scientists and basic scientists to successfully compete for seed funding from Science Foundation Ireland to create a multi-disciplinary research centre, the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), which was established in 2003 and which investigates host-microbe interactions in the gut in health and disease. In 2013, Science Foundation Ireland named Fergus Shanahan as Researcher of the Year.

The story of a chance meeting in 2008 between Andrew Weatherall, the world-renowned DJ, producer and remixer, and Gerard Sheehy, a Co. Cork fisherman. How this meeting inspired Weatherall to use the phrase “Fail We May, Sail We Must” as a personal mantra and how the phrase, in turn, has become an inspiration for thousands of others. It details how in 2021, on the first anniversary of Weatherall’s death, Sheehy was identified as the source of the phrase and tells how the two disparate worlds of the music and fishing industries collided. In this week's podcast, Mark and Brian talk to Professor Noel Caplice. Noel Caplice is the Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences in the Department of Medicine and is the Director of the Centre for Research in Vascular Biology at University College Cork. He is also a consultant cardiologist in Cork University Hospital. He previously held professional positions in pharmacology and medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, where he was an interventional cardiologist and directed the Vascular Stem Cell Laboratory.
Prof Caplice discusses his research and clinical practice and speaks on how his research informs his clinical practice. He also talks about the idea of mentorship and critical thinking. In addition, the importance of lifelong learning was a central part to our discussion.
Prof Caplice offers advice for upcoming scientists and doctors who may be interested in combining research and clinical practice.

In this week's episode, Mark and Brian talk to Brian Pennie. Brian Pennie is a lecturer based in Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. Brian lectures in neuroscience and the sciences of mindfulness and addiction. Brian recently completed his PhD which focused on mindfulness based interventions for adults who experience substance misuse disorders.
Brian shares his remarkable personal story about his own struggles with addiction and how his current research is informed by his own experience. Brian tactfully discusses the stigma surrounding substance misuse and offers a unique insight into the major issue that substance misuse entails.
He also discusses the growing body of evidence illustrating the compelling association between trauma and addiction.

His broad range interests include dementia care, dermatology and inter-professional education. He has been the lead for a community-based dementia project, Kinsale Community Response to Dementia (KCoRD) which developed individualized services and supports for people with Dementia.
Tony has a brilliant understanding of Translational Medicine, having been involved at both ends of the field; bench and bedside. He offered some brilliant into into how we can all be more sensitive and empathetic in how we communicate with people living with Dementia as well as offering advice to our students on how they can make the most of their time here in UCC.

Having completed his undergraduate studies in Neuroscience and Psychology, Adam initially worked as a clinical psychologist in a hospital in America. Now he is conducting research into PTSD. Adam has a good understanding and experience of translational medicine having been at both ends of the field; the bench and the bedside.

This is a group of 35 people, all in their 60's and older, who during the lockdown, were inspired by a songbook compiled by RTÉ's Lillian Smith and formed a singing group.
Members of this singing group, from Ballyphehane, Togher, Turners Cross, Douglas and Mahon, were brought together by the Ballyphehane Togher Community Development Project.
Fiona Flavin, Musical Director of Singing for the Brain, led a weekly online singing class for the group.
With Lyric FM’s Evelyn Grant as MC and Cork Pops’ Gerry Kelly directing, the group had their debut in Coughlan’s outdoor space in September 2021

As part of UCC's celebration of Refugee Week 2021 UCC 98.3FM is pleased to present an interview with UCC second year student Raphael Olympio. Raphael is interviewed by Dr. Gertrude Cotter. Both Raphael and Gertrude are members of UCC’s University of Sanctuary Working Group. 24- year-old Raphael who has been living in Cork for 18 years and was just six years old when he moved from Togo in west Africa to Ireland with his parents and younger siblings. The family were fleeing conflict, arising from a civil war. In this interview he speaks about his early childhood years in Togo, he discusses life for his family living in Direct Provision in Clonakilty, his experience of primary and secondary school as he grew up in Cork. This is a story of courage, resilience, self-awareness and the power of faith. Raphael and his family have overcome mental health difficulties, racism, foster care, changes of country, school and home, yet he has emerged as a successful university student, an accomplished musician and a powerful advocate for refugee communities in Ireland.

A dramatic rendition of Brian Merriman's epic poem translated by Yam Cashen
The Midnight Court presents an epic battle of the sexes where a poet is summoned to the Fairy Court. One young woman bemoans the sexual impotence and unavailability of Irish men while an old man condemns the promiscuity of young women. The heated debate spans a satirical look at sexuality, illegitimate children, priestly celibacy, travellers and prostitution from a time when the penal laws were still in full force.
First written by poet Brian Merriman around 1780, Cúirt an Mheán-Oíche is renowned as a comic masterpiece of the Irish literary canon. Having survived censorship in its original form, its later English language translation suffered an outright ban until little more than fifty years ago for its frank and pornographic language. Yam Cashen’s translation of the Midnight Court gives an excellent, if explicit picture of rural Irish society.

What is a PhD? What kind of people choose to do PhDs and why? Can doing a PhD change the world? What many listeners may not realise is that not all PhD candidates end up in academia. This podcast includes interviews with a journalist, an artist, a scientist, an archaeologist, an archivist, a designer, a teacher and others about their PhD journeys. It offers some startling insights about the contributors’ backgrounds and routine, their motivation and their mental health. We’ll hear how one PhD led to a career in cannabis and we’ll also consider how a PhD can be life changing not just for the candidate but for their friends and family. Programme 1 charts the development of the suffrage movement in Ireland and the role of the Irish Citizen newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Irish Women’s Suffrage League. The programme assesses the influence of Britain’s Emily Pankhurst and her more militant suffragette movement, the Women’s Social and Political Union, on the more pacifist Irish suffragists. Discussion points for this programme include the effects of the 1913 Lockout on the attitude of many key figures such as the poet W.B. Yeats, and the dramatist Sean O’Casey- to Irish politics and the influence of the socialist thinker, James Connolly- on the Irish suffrage movement. Also the opposition of John Redmond’s Irish Parliamentary Party to women’s suffrage, provides a challenging field of discussion.
Dr Doyle O'Neill is a Board member of the Cork Film Festival, as well as being an active committee member of IFUT. She is also a member of The Women's History Association, the National Union of Journalists, as well as being a patron of the UCC Journalism Society. She has also written an historical play on the women of 1916, called Walking with Ireland into the Sun, which was performed throughout Munster during 1916/17 . She has also written an award winning radio series, The Road to the Vote: The fight for female suffrage in Ireland, which is currently available on the Oireachtas website in Dail Éireann. Dr Doyle O' Neill is a broadcast historian. She was the first UCC graduate to receive a Doctorate in Ireland's radio and television history. She lectures in the area of Ireland's broadcast and film history- as well as in the area of Crime and the Media- as part of the BA in Criminology. She is author of The Gaybo Revolution: How Gay Byrne Challenged Irish Society, which is currently a recommended text for the Leaving Certificate
