Emma Neilson has been on that journey; having worked in music festival production for much of her career she is now in project management for Wasps. She spoke to Dougal Perman about her life in festivals, what she learned about remote working and collaboration and empathy, how the workplace is adapting and some of the positive aspects about life and work that we can take from the pandemic.

Following a short stint in the military, Reut Barak graduated as a trained Opera Singer from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, and then worked in Berlin, singing church music by Mozart, Haydn and Bach.

While arranging concerts in the city and managing artists, she discovered her passion for business. She joined fellow entrepreneurs in the 2013-2014 class at the University of Oxford, with a scholarship to study business (MBA), where she found that creativity goes far beyond art. She later had a taste of corporate life, seeing the inside workings of some of the world’s largest finance, energy and manufacturing companies, and wrote for National Geographic.

Leaving the world of corporate drama behind, she now pursues her dreams of becoming a fiction novelist, a self published vegan author, blogger and youtuber. She first arrived in Scotland as a hiker, eager to explore the mysterious highlands, where she got her inspiration for the Evans Witches series.

In this episode Reut describes her journey to becoming a fiction author and offers insight and tips for those who might wish to follow in her footsteps. She also introduces us to her new book “Magic In The Time of Corona”

Giles Perring is a musician, composer and producer who runs the Sound of Jura studio based on the Isle of Jura off the coast of Argyll. Giles is a musical maverick who has involved creative collaboration in his music through remote participation technology, mostly using the humble telephone. Giles’s ever-evolving piece The Exchange was the feature of an XpoNorth Spotlight in April 2020. That performance was the highlight of the launch event for the Cultural, Heritage and Arts Assembly of Argyll and the Isles, or CHARTS, which took place in St John’s Cathedral in Oban with a live link from Giles’s studio in Jura and contributions from musicians from all over the world. Dougal collaborated with Giles to make that project possible and speaks to him in this episode of the XpoNorth Podcast about how he got into making music, how collaboration and remote participation feature in his work and his perspective on remote working during the coronavirus crisis.
