Dark-Fired Tobacco farming has ben a thriving family farm industry in middle Tennessee for more than a century. For the majority of those years it had been family arms, and family workers. As families became smaller, outside laborers were hired on. More than two decades ago, however, local workers were no longer willing to work in the harsh, and grueling conditions of dark-fired tobacco.

This introduced he need for migrant workers - in this case from Mexico, who came to the United States legally, for season work in the tobacco fields. Twelve years ago, when I was commissioned to photograph a documentary on this type of tobacco farming, the migrant workers made up about one-third of the workforce. Now, just over a decade later, that ratio has increased to two-thirds, or even greater.

This episode is an introduction to Dark Fired Tobacco, giving listeners an in-depth insight into the grueling manual labor needed to grow, harvest, and cure this crop.

The B17 Flying Fortress was the workhorse of the air power over the European skies during WWII. I had the privilege of flying in one of these aircraft, accumulating more than 100 hours of flight time. During that period I was equally privileged to meet with ,and have conversation with many of the veteran crew members who flew these missions.
