Managing members and member advocacy is an essential element of the association’s purpose. Rich Gott of MemberWise shares how he started a free-to-join membership association focussing on members in associations. We discussed how to do engagement in an online world and how to communicate about tangible benefits in an ever intangible world.

MemberWise also conducted a great research project that launched now in June 2021 after receiving responses from 719 associations. The rearch report is available on the MemberWise website and is a valuable resource to use in response to the current circumstances of associations.

"I am widely recognised as one of the leading membership thought-leaders / specialists in the UK and I chair The MemberWise Network - the largest free professional network for membership and association professionals.

I provide practical help and support to over 3,000 membership bodies looking to increase new member acquisition, improve member retention, enhance member value and optimise member engagement/participation to enable long term sustainable growth.

Throughout my career I have delivered a range of member-facing senior management team roles at a range of high profile membership bodies (including the Royal College of General Practitioners, The Law Society, Royal College of Psychiatrists, British Dental Association, College of Optometrists and Chartered Instititue of Educational Assessors)) and I pride myself on 'walking the talk'.

I regularly speak at national conferences, facilitate membership focused away days/working groups/client days (for organisations including The IET, Royal College of Nursing and Chartered Institute of Credit Management) and provide membership diagnostic consultancy insight/advice to leading membership organisations (including the British Society of Immunology, Institution of Fire Engineers and Royal College of Anaesthetists)."

Far from boring, compliance in an association is an essential element of our existence as an association. Malcolm Boyd has developed learning insights to help association executives fully understand and embrace their responsibilities. Malcolm also does a great job in this conversation, of demonstrating the huge economic value of associations as well as the board members, association leaders, and volunteers and the work they do to add to the economic growth of a country, even though most of that value is unacknowledged and certainly not accounted for.

Malcolm is the founder and managing trustee of Third Sector Insights, a social enterprise that focuses on shining the light into the board rooms of nonprofit and social impact organisations, and founding member of the World Institute for Governance of Non-Profit Organisations. He is the chairman of World Vision South Africa, a global Christian relief, development, and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families, and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. He is widely known by the South African SME support fraternity, especially for his role as founding CEO of NAMAC Trust.

He has a passion for excellence in the NPO sector with a particular focus on Board Leadership, Governance, and Executive Management. He lectures at Stellenbosch University Business School and presents the governance module for the NPO Management programme. In addition, he facilitates the one-day co-branded TSI/Institute of Directors South Africa’s (IoDSA) one-day programme on NPO Governance.

We had a great conversation comparing notes on how we connected with members and created value in membership during Covid. We also tackled the conversation about burnout and mental health during these challenging times, particularly for those who are serving in leadership roles while also being challenged in their own lives.
