Episode 566

Michael Cioni built four startups, and each one taught him something the last one couldn’t. What he learned at Frame.io and Adobe was that the cloud, despite its flexibility, was too expensive and the internet too slow for the workflows creative professionals actually live in. That insight became Strada: a peer-to-peer network that lets you share files directly off your own local storage — OWC drives included — without uploading them to a cloud service first.

Larry O’Connor saw it in motion at IBC and recognized immediately what Strada represented: a practical, powerful use case for OWC hardware that cloud infrastructure simply can’t replicate. He describes a generation of professionals who have been told cloud is the answer for everything, sometimes at the expense of understanding what on-premise storage can actually do. OWC has consistently pushed back against that narrative, and the partnership with Strada is the clearest expression of that position yet.

The conversation covers how Strada evolved — starting with AI-assisted media tagging, shifting to peer-to-peer file access after direct customer feedback, and planning to bring AI enrichment back in 2027, this time running locally on your own hardware. Michael explains why building the company in public, with weekly live streams and open beta testing, wasn’t just a marketing strategy — it was a financial necessity for a startup that can’t afford to build the wrong thing. Larry echoes this, noting that customer-first thinking has always driven OWC’s product decisions.

They also discuss storage pricing volatility, the real-world limits of internet bandwidth for high-resolution formats like 8K RED RAW, and what it means to give creative professionals access to that footage remotely in seconds — without requiring a full upload first.

If this conversation sparked something, subscribe so you don’t miss what’s next. Drop a comment — are you still paying for cloud storage you wish you could replace? Larry and Michael would probably love to hear it.

Schlage has been in the lock business for over 100 years, and that heritage is very much alive in how the company approaches smart home security. Tim Eskew walks through the evolution of Schlage’s connected products — from their first electronic lock in 2007 to Bluetooth integration in the early 2010s, Wi-Fi with the Encode line in 2019, and now the Sense Pro, which combines Ultra-Wideband, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, and Matter over Thread in a single device.

The centerpiece of the conversation is Schlage Converge, the proprietary technology built into the Sense Pro that enables hands-free, approach-based unlocking. Using Ultra-Wideband, the lock detects the angle and speed of your approach, then unlocks at exactly the right moment — no fumbling for keys, no tapping a phone. Tim explains that the use case that drove its development was deceptively simple: coming home with your hands full.

Beyond Converge, the conversation covers the Sense Pro’s keyless-and-keypadless design, how Schlage handles battery life and low-power failsafes (including a USB-C jumpstart port), ecosystem compatibility across Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and Matter, and how firmware updates have allowed Schlage to keep older locks relevant and valuable over time.

Marc and Tim also dig into how consumers discover features they didn’t know they had — scheduled access codes, remote unlocking from hundreds of miles away, and vacation rental integrations — and how the smart home ecosystem has genuinely reinvigorated product development at Schlage from the inside out.

Episode 565

Tim Ketchum walks Marc Aflalo through the origin story of Composer: a startup born from frustration with composting and a recognition that garbage disposals, despite being in 60% of American homes, handle only 15% of food waste. The engineering challenge wasn’t grinding — every disposal does that — it was rethinking every other aspect of the experience.

The centerpiece of Composer’s design is a patented drain iris: a one-touch lever mechanism that opens and closes the drain opening with one hand, eliminating loose covers and reducing the risk of drops or accidental contact. The iris also deadens sound significantly — something Ketchum notes has more to do with directing noise away from the grinding chamber than with insulation panels.

The second major differentiator is an enzyme system inspired by dishwasher detergent. Twice daily, Composer automatically injects enzymes into the chamber to break down food residue, prevent odors, and reduce the risk of pipe buildup — while a built-in water injection system ensures proper flushing without needing a running tap.

Marc highlights the accessibility angle directly: the iris design removes the fine motor challenges of traditional twist-lock covers and reduces safety anxiety for users with children or limited hand strength.

Composer is available to reserve at composer.me, with early-bird enzyme subscriptions at $4.99/month. First shipments are targeted for October (subject to production timelines — verify current status directly with the company).

Episode 564

J.D. Power surveyed over 5,000 Canadian digital bank users to evaluate mobile app and website experiences across four pillars: digital design and usability, system performance, security, and support. The findings show that the banks leading in satisfaction aren’t winning on features — they’re winning on fundamentals. Fast load times, clear account information, intuitive navigation, and reliable money movement are the real differentiators.

AI-powered virtual assistants are gaining ground, but unevenly. When users see their bank’s assistant as truly capable and comprehensive, satisfaction scores jump by 160 points. The catch: that sense of capability falls apart fast when tasks get complex. Reporting fraud, resolving disputes, or navigating anything high-stakes often leaves users trapped in loops or met with generic responses — the opposite of reassuring.

White argues the next frontier isn’t more automation. It’s better handoffs — clear, prescriptive guidance that moves a customer to the right human at the right moment. According to the research, that’s actually one of the top four things Canadians want AI to do for them.

TD ranked highest among banking apps. CIBC led for website experience. Tangerine topped the credit card mobile app category with a score of 737, compared to American Express at 717 in second place.

Cyber threats targeting Canadians have escalated sharply, and the numbers back it up. Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs recorded a 379% increase in worldwide ransomware activity, with over 370 Canadian organizations hit by extortion attacks in a recent reporting period. Derek Manky explains this isn’t random noise — attackers are increasingly focused, targeted, and efficient, operating on a “work smarter, not harder” model powered by AI.

At the core of the problem is the rise of Crime-as-a-Service (CaaS). Dark web platforms now offer turnkey AI-powered attack tools — including weaponized GPT models — for as little as $1,000 per year. These tools scrape social media profiles, craft hyper-personalized phishing emails in French or English, and can automate the entire attack cycle, including selling compromised network access through what Fortinet calls “shadow agents.” The attack window has shrunk from weeks to 24–48 hours — and is expected to drop below 24 hours within the year.

On the defence side, 47% of Canadian organizations cite a cybersecurity skills shortage as a top challenge, and nearly half report difficulty finding staff with AI-specific expertise. Manky argues that throwing headcount at the problem isn’t the answer — organizations need AI-powered Security Operations Centers (SOCs), and the talent trained to work inside them. Fortinet has partnered with 37 Canadian academic institutions, including BCIT and Simon Fraser University, to build that pipeline.

Looking ahead, Manky flags deepfake-based identity attacks, AI agent exploitation, and insider threats — including “laptop farmers” infiltrating organizations remotely — as emerging risks. On the countermeasures side, Fortinet recently launched a cybercrime bounty program in partnership with Crime Stoppers International, enabling organizations and individuals to submit tips and contribute to law enforcement action.

Apple’s WWDC 2025 keynote took a different approach this year — less time on visual polish, more focus on proving its AI actually works. Marc and Steven break down what that means in practice, walking through the features most likely to change how people actually use their devices day to day. Steven highlights what stood out from an accessibility standpoint: the Shortcuts app is finally getting natural-language AI input, addressing a long-standing barrier for blind users who couldn’t navigate its interface independently. Safari is getting a similar treatment, letting users describe browser extensions rather than build them manually. And the Passwords app will begin handling credential updates autonomously — no more ignored reminders. Beyond accessibility, the conversation covers quieter wins like independent alarm volumes, smarter Spotlight search, improved Messages context surfacing, and better Wi-Fi to cellular handoffs. Marc and Steven also weigh in on the hardware rumor mill — a confirmed touchscreen MacBook, a potential foldable iPhone, and what the new Siri UI design might telegraph about upcoming MacBook hardware.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2025 leaned hard into artificial intelligence, and for good reason: the company had ground to make up. Marc and Mitchell walk through their top takeaways from the keynote, starting with the most significant shift — a rebuilt Siri powered by Google’s Gemini model. The revamped assistant now tracks conversations across sessions and works contextually across Apple devices, letting users start a task on a Mac and continue it on an iPhone. Visual Intelligence extends that further, allowing Siri to interpret what your camera sees and answer questions about real-world objects or on-screen content.

Beyond Siri, the episode covers Apple Intelligence in Safari (smart tab organization, contextual price alerts), the Liquid Glass redesign and expanded user controls over its appearance, meaningful performance improvements for older devices, and iCloud shared albums finally opening up to Android users in full resolution. There’s also a practical look at parental controls and the AI-assisted password management feature — though both hosts admit the mechanics of the latter remain unclear.

The conversation expands into broader themes: our cultural attachment to mobile devices, the tension between connectivity and presence, and whether theaters and immersive experiences are finding smarter ways to manage it. The episode closes on Apple’s biggest non-software announcement — Tim Cook stepping down as CEO, with hardware chief John Ternus stepping in. Mitchell reflects on what Cook built financially, and both hosts note how carefully Apple managed the optics of the transition to protect stock perception.

The Canadian Game Awards are growing into something far bigger than a yearly celebration of games. In this conversation, Carl-Edwin Michel shares the long-term vision behind the event, why community and accessibility now sit at the center of the awards, and how Canada’s gaming industry continues to shape global culture. From indie developers and esports organizations to podcasters and accessibility advocates, this discussion highlights the people driving the future of gaming in Canada and beyond.

Carl-Edwin Michel reflects on the origins of the Canadian Game Awards, tracing the journey back to his early work with the former Canadian Video Game Awards and the decision to revive the concept in 2020, just as the pandemic reshaped the industry. What began as an awards show focused on recognizing game developers has evolved into a broader celebration of the gaming ecosystem, including esports, creators, podcasters, accessibility advocates, and grassroots communities.

The conversation explores Canada’s role as a major force in gaming, with titles like EA Sports FC and Assassin’s Creed developed by Canadian studios that many players around the world don’t realize originate here. Carl also discusses his long-term vision to position the Canadian Game Awards alongside major entertainment events like the Junos and Screen Awards, while still maintaining strong community roots.

Accessibility and inclusion are another major focus of the episode. Carl explains why introducing accessibility categories and expert-led judging processes was important to the future of the awards. The discussion also touches on the rise of esports in Canada, partnerships with organizations like Make-A-Wish Canada and the Canadian Podcast Awards, and the importance of bringing the industry together during a challenging period for gaming.

The Canadian Game Awards take place May 21st at the John Bassett Theatre and will also stream live on Twitch.

The video doorbell category has come a long way since Ring helped create it, and this conversation covers exactly how far. Marc and Dave dig into the current generation of Ring products, including the first-ever battery-powered doorbells with 2K and 4K resolution, and what that jump in clarity actually means in practice — think six-times zoom on 2K and ten-times on 4K, with the image detail to help identify faces, read license plates, and capture the kind of footage that actually holds up when law enforcement comes knocking.

Marc shares firsthand stories of Ring footage helping catch burglars in his neighborhood and of suspects visibly skipping his house when they spotted the camera. Dave Ward doesn’t just let that land as a testimonial — he connects it to the broader design philosophy at Ring: making products that feel set-and-forget, that don’t require technical knowledge to install, and that work just as well for someone’s 70-something mom as for a tech-forward homeowner.

The episode gets into AI features that are changing the daily experience, including smart video descriptions that tell you exactly what’s happening at your door before you even open the notification — a person, a brown bag, a dog — so you can decide whether to engage. There’s also a practical look at the quick-release battery pack upgrade, solar options, and how Ring’s software update approach means older devices keep getting better over time.

Marc pushes on the subscription question directly, and Dave gives a clear answer: every Ring product works out of the box with no plan required. The Ring Protect subscription layers on features like six months of cloud storage, smart video descriptions, and familiar face recognition — all of which require real processing power behind the scenes.

When Bob Millar’s mother began losing her ability to use phones and tablets as her cognition declined, he didn’t find a solution on the market — so he helped build one. Paige is a large-format digital clock that displays photos of family members. When a loved one taps a face, it triggers a video call to that person’s phone. No typing. No navigation. No confusion. Just a familiar face on a screen.

Marc shares his own experience as a caregiver for his mother-in-law, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia after a broken leg led to a rapid decline. That personal backdrop makes this conversation feel less like a product pitch and more like two people trying to solve a problem that millions of families quietly face alone.

Bob talks about the deliberate choice to keep Paige focused on one thing — connection — and why adding features like pill reminders or photo galleries would undermine the core mission. He draws on his enterprise software background, including five years at BlackBerry, to explain why “simple is the Swiss Army knife” when the user is someone who has been left behind by modern technology.

The episode also covers Paige’s enterprise integration for care facilities, how the device works on both Wi-Fi and SIM card, the current pricing model (including a $200 discount at time of recording), and the broader issue of how little guidance families receive after an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis. Bob and Todd both emphasize that tools like Paige deserve a place in government-supported care frameworks — not as a luxury, but as an essential resource.

Now the s 23 Plus has a 6.6 inch 10, ADP, OLED and a 4700 milliamp battery, the s 23 Plus also has a little bit faster wired charging and higher base storage starts at 256 gigs compared to the 128 gigs on the entry level s 23. They both stuff wireless charging and of course IP ratings for dust and water resistance. Now the new chips onboard these devices, Snapdragon eight gen two processors, slightly higher Max clock speed, so they will perform a little bit different camera systems on these devices. Well, they’re refurbished and refreshed across the board. You’ve got brand new sensors, brand new image processing, and AI remastering of photos. Now AI has been in the news a lot as of late so you know the power of AI and what it can do so add that to a camera system and you get a pretty impressive result at the end of the day. Now on this one, you’ve got a camera system that includes a 50 megapixel main camera 12 megapixel ultra wide and the 3x telephoto lens. When I took pictures on device on vacation, you can tell that the camera quality was pretty good, brightly lit in a nice setup room. Now in a perfect environment that pictures look absolutely great on any device. And in this particular case, it was no difference. There was a bit of shutter lag which I noticed which is not new to Samsung phones, something that you get used to after the end of the day. On the front of these devices. There’s a brand new 12 megapixel selfie camera. This is a new design a little bit clearer in terms of actual video conferencing. So if you also want to use that for the selfies, of course, it’s going to work the same as 23 starting price is 799 and the S 23 Plus starts at 999. So what about the Ultra? Let’s talk about the basic specs here. Okay, you can have eight or you can have 12 gigs of RAM. Okay, that’s a good option 5000 milliamp battery, that is a big ass battery that will last you an entire day. Granted if you’re filming 4k The entire day, maybe not so much. Well, I’ll let you decide exactly what that means to you a 200 megapixel camera. Think about that for a second 200 megapixel camera on a smartphone weighed 234 grams, okay, that’s a pretty heavy device. When you compare this the fact that 249 grams is what the drone needs to be in order to not fly with license. So that’s what they’ve been releasing the seperti heavy phone if it’s actually the the actual weight of a drone. That being said, the drones are pretty light in general. Okay, so we said 234 grams, the weight of this device, we talked about the camera system a bit, but let’s talk about some of the other features because you’ve got 120 hertz HDR 10 display on this device. It is 6.8 inches diagonally always on display with Android 13. So you get that quality there as well. The actual pixel density on this device is actually over 500 pixels per inch. That’s insane. That means you get a resolution of 1440 by 38. Let me check about 1440 by 3088 overall look and feel the device is actually quite comfortable in the hand. It’s got that nice shiny, glossy look on the sides which was extremely magnetic to your fingerprint. So be wary of that and I think you know that wherever you get the matte color finish on the back which is kind of nice if that camera bumps as well if you look at it from the side are really not as pronounced as before overhead shot you can kind of see that by the side as well. And when it’s on a desk, it doesn’t really have that annoying bounce unless you do the opposite coroners. Let’s talk about some of the video resolutions on this device which are pretty cool up to 8k 24 or 30 frames per second for K 30 or 60 frames per second 1080 P at 3060 or 240. And of course 1080 at 960 frames per second with HDR 10 Plus stereo sound recording and that new front facing selfie camera also supports up to 4k up to 60 frames per second Bluetooth is version 5.3 Wi Fi up to six e so you get those gigabit speeds you of course got GPS and everything else that you could pick up now there are no satellite connectivity on this one though, or you’re really missing out. If you want to charge by wire it’s a 45 watt power supply that comes with it which means you can get up to 65% in just 30 minutes of charge. So overall a pretty reliable flagship device from Samsung the s 23 Ultra Of course you can get in on the regular s 23 s 23. Plus if you don’t want to go on to the ultra as we await to see what other companies come up with this year in terms of flagship devices. Thanks for watching.
