Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with PEI's Kinley Dowling. We dirve into her musical history, her time with Hey Rosetta!, and her latest single, Marrying Me, produced by Corey LeRue.KINLEY is a skilled and sought-after collaborator at her core, sharing countless stages and recording credits with some of Canada’s best-known artists on over 550 tracks. PEI indie pop powerhouse KINLEY has adapted that approach into her solo work – and is delivering the most compelling material of her decorated career as a result. She's released 3 solo albums and won countless East Coast Music and Music PEI Awards.Corey LeRue is a multi-platinum, Juno award winning producer, songwriter, remixer and engineer. In May, 2024, at the East Coast Music Awards (ECMA) in Charlottetown, KINLEY met Corey LeRue in the hallway just after he won the ECMA for Producer of the Year. As a fan of him and his work with NeonDreams, she slipped her latest album in his Sobeys bag as he was leaving to go back home. Later that night she got a nice message from Corey asking if she had any demos she would like him to work on. The next day KINLEY sent Corey a demo of ‘Marrying Me’ and within a week he had produced, mixed and mastered it, and it’s ready for release into the world."I live in the adorable city of Charlottetown and I hear church bells all the time and this became the inspiration for ‘Marrying Me.’ I started to think about all my friends who got married and all the weddings that I’ve played for and observed a lot of them didn’t work out. It also made me think about myself and how I grew up thinking that of course I would get married and how beautiful it would be but I realized I was only imagining the romance and the fabulous white dress and being surrounded by friends and family. I never imagined the reality of marriage past the glamour. That’s when I came up with the chorus of the song. My reality hasn’t included marriage and it may or may not be in the cards but it is no longer an expectation because my reality is a life filled with love and rich experience."http://www.kinleymusic.com/📷:Ashley Anne Clark East Coast DNA brings you music + arts coverage all year round.SUBSCRIBE to East Coast DNA for more music + arts coverage through the yearWATCH our interviews and live performance videos at: YouTube.com/@eastcoastdna

Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with singer/songwriter Chloé Caroline.Born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California, Chloé Caroline’s music radiates a warm, authentic, SoCal vibe with a subliminal message for people to live their truth and spread their light. Her ultimate goal: for nobody to ever feel alone. After experiencing a life threatening illness at age 11 that left her isolated, she taught herself guitar on YouTube using songwriting as her outlet, and friend. Her sound is an intentional combination of real and synthetic instruments with nods to the past and present. This along with her bubbly personality and being a self-proclaimed “floater” seem to attract those from all walks of life. Critics say she is both an old soul yet ahead of her time.Immersed in sound from birth, Chloé’s father, a musician and film maker, filled their house with a variety of eclectic sounds from Fleetwood Mac, Carole King, and the The Rolling Stones to Frank Sinatra, Amy Winehouse, Dolly Parton and New Radicals. A gypsy in spirit Chloé has been writing in journals as long as she can remember, her lyrics intimately personal but based on universal experiences that people can relate to. A prolific writer since age 6, Chloé combines the vocal influences of Stevie Nicks/Ellie Goulding/Avril Lavigne with the pop, writing and production sensibility of Harry Styles and Shawn Mendes, both who have some organic melting-pot roots in the pop space. Her creative talents go beyond music and include the 16+ music videos she has created and filmed and a podcast she co-hosts called “Unwritten” that gives an unedited platform for self submitted and nominated guests to share their stories and advice on various topics. While still in college at Belmont University, Chloé became the first independent artist with her music and videos added to Radio Disney, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon Music.Shortly after graduating, in 2018 with no prior acting experience, Chloé auditioned and co-starred alongside Kelly Rutherford and Cameron Mathison in Hallmark Channel’s "Love, of Course”. She also wrote and performed the soundtrack and songs for the film. In addition, she has had multiple film/TV placements with her original songs ranging from the end title of Lionsgate’s "The Great Gilly Hopkins” to MTV’s "Catfish”. As an influencer Chloé has organically and independently built a loyal following via social media of over 200k followers that have dubbed themselves the "Chloé Caroline Crew” — even collaborating professionally for music videos, graphic design, branding partnerships and a jewelry line. With over 70+ partnerships ranging from major brands like Corona, Charming Charlie, Toyota and Stella Rosa Wines to niche brands like Moonglow Jewelry, she is adored for her “realness”, positivity and spiritual ethos often touching on manifestation, the power of perspective, and her “nothing is impossible” encouragement.https://www.chloecaroline.com/SUBSCRIBE to East Coast DNA for music + arts coverage throughout the year.

Dan Cochrane chats with East Coast DNA about the Antigonish Highland Games, to be held July 7-14, 2024The Antigonish Highland Society was founded in 1861, about 75 years after the Gaels first began arriving on nearby shores. At its first meeting, the new Society elected Dr. Alexander MacDonald as its president and approved the Society’s objectives of perpetuating the language, music and traditions of the Highland Scot and assisting their fellow Gaels in times of need. The Society celebrated St. Andrew’s Day that year and two years later held its first Highland Games on Apple Tree Island in the east end of town. Since then, the Society has sponsored more than 150 Highland Games while supporting the Gaelic language, piping and drumming, Highland dancing, fiddle music and step-dancing, athletics and the Ancient Scottish Heavy Events. It has kept alive or created numerous traditions and events that help to define the character of Antigonish town and county.https://www.antigonishhighlandgames.ca/Episode music provided by Mudmen @MudmenVideo mudmen.caSUBSCRIBE to @eastcoastdna for your music and arts coverage throughout the year.

Between writing his debut Clever Hopes album, Artefact, and the songs that comprise New Kind of Familiar, Andrew Shaver experienced his fair share of significant events—falling in love, moving to Nova Scotia, becoming a father. These are the things occupying his mind on the new record, and yet, they don't exist in a vacuum; Shaver rejects tidy narratives and time's linear arrow, and instead lets the album take shape with the same flow and verve of real life, bouncing back and forth in his lyrics between memory, the glorious, the complicated present, and anticipation."There was a lot of looking back on Artefact," Shaver says. "New Kind of Familiar is far more forward looking; there are songs on which I've been able to celebrate the place I'm in now - a place of stability and clarity. There's a song that deals directly with the question of death, and one about the birth of my son, or essentially, rebirth."Bringing such a diversity of arrangements to life necessitated a crack team of close and new friends, which Shaver assembled to join him at Joel Plaskett's Fang Recording studio in Dartmouth: Eva Foote (vocals), Matthew Barber (vocals, mixing, production), Joe Grass (guitars), Afie Jurvanen aka Bahamas (guitars), Kyle Cunjak (bass), Joshua van Tassel (drums). Steve O'Connor recorded the keys after the fact in Port Hope, and Kev Foran once again played the brass from his studio in Dublin.

Art Ross (they/them) and Aaron Green (he/him) come from disparate backgrounds and musical forms, meeting in the middle to comprise a band that’s tender and fierce, exuberant and gentle. Green—a veteran of the Halifax rock scene, the guitar anchor of Floodland and Hello Delaware—and Ross—a trans songwriter with an acoustic guitar—started writing songs together over text, by accident. Pillow Fite emerged publicly at the start of 2021 with its non-binary gender-subverting aesthetics already firmly in place. Art and Aaron joined East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for chat about their first 3 years as a band, new content, and upcoming performances. 00:15 Welcoming Pillow Fite to East Coast DNA34:25 Alma by Pillow Fite"Alma," speaks to how much you learn about someone when you’re forced to spend so much uninterrupted time together and develop an appreciation for your learned coexistence. The duo — composed of Art Ross (they/them) and Aaron Green (he/him) — touches on relationship dynamics that change during joyful confinement, and how the habits and mannerisms that lovingly annoy you can bring you closer together. Written when they had nowhere to go and nothing to do but make up songs, "Alma" finds the beauty in the quiet moments with your partner, despite the trying circumstances of sharing but one household, and what feels like 4 walls. Pillow Fite presents moody and intimate lyrics delivered with a dreamlike nostalgia alongside inventive guitar riffs and synths - a sensibility that can leave listeners both weeping and singing along. "Alma" offers a production style that is bursting at the seams — a contrast to the times of small room confinement in which the song was written. A folk-fingerpicking style that evolved into a stomp-clap with a pumping, bouncing, drum beat, "Alma" is a nod to their first releases, such as their 2022 debut EP Flutter, which featured airier vocals and gentler sounds. The single was recorded and produced in Halifax, Nova Scotia by Aaron Green, mixed by John Mullane (Future Dad), and mastered by New Brunswick’s John McLaggan (Parachute Mastering). This new single follows a slew of releases from the prolific Pillow Fite, including the amped up indie rocker "Ativan," the folk-driven "Napanee," and the soft but moody "Overpass."

May 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Andy Kim’s “Rock Me Gently,” a song absolutely nobody wanted to sign, produce, or play on the radio in the beginning, but here we are, being in top-rated shows, millions of spins around the world, and no stopping all these years later. The record was a massive hit in 1974, going all the way to Number 1 in the U.S. and Number 2 in the U.K. as part of its staggering four-month run on the charts. Even if you weren’t alive back then to experience the song’s inexorable pop pull, you’ve probably heard it since, on shows like Ray Donovan and Sex Education or commercials for the Jeep Liberty. And that’s not even mentioning the 1989 cover by country artist Michelle Wright, nor the sample of “Rock Me Gently” that showed up in Mint Royale’s “Take It Easy” 10 years later.Given its enduring appeal, one can easily forget that, at the time of “Rock Me Gently’s” original release, Kim was already considered washed up in the music business. He was no longer the kid who had driven from his native Montreal to New York on a wing and a prayer to find work at the famous Brill building. The success that had followed included co-writing and singing on the Number 1 song of 1969, “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies, and shifting more than 1.5 million copies of his own take on the Phil Spector/Ronettes classic “Baby I Love You” the very same year. But by 1974, nobody wanted to know. Kim had to release “Rock Me Gently” on his own label, after turndowns from absolutely every producer and established record company he approached. In fact, it was a tough go at radio at first, but the writer who became his own producer of the song never believed in the word ‘no’ to mean anything but another opportunity to create his own destiny.A variety of forces—including ever-shifting cultural currents and the death of his father—ensured that his career continued to have more than its share of ups and downs. And truth be told, it’s never been in his nature to prioritize the spotlight of personal glory over the work anyway. But when you’ve touched so many people with your songs—your song in particular, the one with your name on it, that you put so much on the line to record and release—your fans won’t let you fade into obscurity. At age 77, Kim finds himself in the enviable position of being hailed as an elder statesman of pop while enjoying a newfound relevance to contemporary audiences. “I Forgot To Mention,” his 2004 collaboration with one of those aforementioned fans, Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies, got him named the Best Solo Indie Artist of the Year during Canadian Music Week. That paved the way for “comeback albums” like 2010’s Happen Again and 2015’s It’s Decided, the latter of which put Kim on the Arts & Crafts label with hip latter-day artists like Feist, Chilly Gonzales, The Stills and Stars, thanks to Kevin Drew, founder of Arts & Crafts, showcasing his admiration for the iconic artist's timeless music. This collaboration brings together two generations of Canadian music talent, bridging the gap between past and present in the indie music scene. Drew's decision reflects not only his business acumen but also his deep appreciation for Kim's enduring musical legacy. And every year, his Andy Kim Christmas Show raises big money – over $2.5 million so far - for Toronto charities, thanks in part to support from a roster of talents that’s included Broken Social Scene, Metric, Maestro Fresh Wes, Sarah Harmer, Sam Roberts, Lights, Rush’s Alex Lifeson, Finger Eleven and Ron Sexsmith.Kim’s name now hangs in a veritable mansion’s worth of hallowed halls, including the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Billboard’s Hit Parade Hall of Fame. He also has his own spot of Canada’s Walk of Fame. And last year, he received the ultimate honor by being made an officer of the Order of Canada, for his irreplaceable contributions to the cultural landscape of his country.

Before they knew it they were in too deep to turn back and just kept going until they began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Turns out it was the best idea they ever had.Today, Upstreet is a B-Corp certified company with three locations across two provinces, a line of craft sodas, and beer on shelves in all four Atlantic provinces. We hope to continue to grow and refresh our communities.East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh sat for a chat, and a beer, with brew master Hogie to get the background behind the Track 4 ECMAle and what else the brewery/venue has to offer. Thanks to Upstreet Craft Brewing for a recording location, and tasty beverage. Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with Dyson Knight, Baha Men lead singer, as he releases a solo single through NSCC’s Music Business Program. At Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), everyone in the Music Department is aware of a Bahamian student who has achieved international fame in the music industry. Dyson Knight, integral member of Grammy award-winning group Baha Men (memorable for their international hit single Who Let the Dogs Out?), is enrolled in the college’s Music Production and Engineering program, and he is releasing his new single Feeling The Magic today.Knight ended up at NSCC due to a convergence of circumstances: “I went through a series of challenges post a near fatal car crash in 2021. I felt a strong need to reevaluate my life. One of the things I wanted to act on is my transition from being a frontline singer of Baha Men to taking a role as an engineer/producer/manager of the band. So, although daunting, I decided to move to Canada to study Music Production and Audio Engineering at NSCC in Dartmouth. I ultimately chose this school because it allows me to be with my older children who live in Halifax.”Knight has been mostly flying under the radar ever since he arrived in Canada, but that’s about to change, as he is set to make waves with the release of his new single Feeling the Magic. This release came out of a contest held every year by the Music Department at NSCC. The Producer Challenge is a competition in which Music Production students are divided into teams tasked with writing and recording a song in one week. The songs are then evaluated and judged by a panel of local music industry people, and this year’s first-place prize was to have the winning song be commercially released by NSCC’s Music Business class. This Music Business program, offered at the Ivany Campus in Dartmouth, NS, is a graduate certificate program, led by industry veteran Evan Newman. It began last year, where the inaugural class launched the Lulo Music Group. The team of producers which included Knight won the contest with a song called Feeling the Magic. The song was written and sang by Dyson, and because the finished product was a collaborative effort among students, it nudged Knight to explore avenues a bit outside of the Caribbean pop that has mainly been his calling card so far.The result was Feeling The Magic, a change of style for Knight, but still a reflection of his continued dedication to creating captivating music. The song is an upbeat funk-disco track with an infectious bass line that will invite you to dance. It has an encouraging and optimistic message, and it evokes positivity and carefree energy. Feeling The Magic is out today.Subscribe to @eastcoastdna for more music + arts coverage throughout the year

Halifax indie pop-singer Psiren played a special live show with a full band at Radstorm on Thursday, April 18th, to celebrate the release of his new single "Anhedonia"!Psiren (he/him) is a queer, independent singer, rapper, & producer, presenting thoughtful, passionate, jazz-infused pop and hip-hop vocals over dreamy synths, smooth electric keys, grooving basslines, and funky, hard-hitting drum breaks. His lyrics are emotionally honest, and open about sensitive personal and political topics, such as living with mental illness, queer experiences, class struggle, and personal identity in the digital age.Since 2018, Psiren has released five EPs (with his most recent EP “Hope” released this past December), seven original singles, and a cover of Mazzy Star’s “Into Dust.” Psiren has also appeared on “We’re in It Together” (Rich Aucoin), “Me 2 U” (Tuker Lucy), “The Bitter End” (Wash This Garden With Blood), and has produced two songs for the Buffy-nominated Caius Hubris– “Diamond Hands” and “Someday.”“Anhedonia” explores what it’s like to go through the motions while trying desperately to cling to small sources of joy and relief, as they become less and less effective. At its core, It’s a song about asking yourself if you need to make a change.Recorded/co-produced by Riley Lloyd, mixed by John Fraser Longley. Recording musicians include Liam MacNeil (Crystal Stares, Acid Wash and (formerly) Drop the Formality), Josh Stewart (Crystal Stares, Acid Wash and The Thaumaturge), Saylor Walker (IDialedYourNumber and Saylor Moon), Will Mulligan, Rho Centurion and River Gosney.https://linktr.ee/psirensongsSpecial thanks to The Pint Public House/Below Deck Dive Bar for providing us a location to record our chat.Subscribe to @eastcoastdna for more music + arts coverage throughout the year

New Brunswick based Dillon Ryan & The Dream Romantic are back with a new album release planned for April 26th. 2024Dillon Ryan & the Dream Romantic are an infectiously talented and refreshingly distinctive new wave band from the East Coast of Canada. The band is authentically breathing new life into the underexplored genres of new wave, goth and post punk. Their inspiration from the Smiths, Echo & Bunnymen and the Cure is marvelously palpable in their material yet their work remains completely fresh. Their hauntingly melodic landscapes swallow you into a cinematic gothic universe. It's soothing yet scary and you just can't get enough. The perpetually evolving artist shows no signs of slowing down. It is clear he was born to play music and that trajectory has led him down an illustrious path. Dillon Ryan & The Dream Romantic weave melodic lullabies and gothic ballads that cling to listeners. Their poetic songwriting paired with a beautifully melancholic sonic landscape is an enthralling void to lose yourself to. In a world oversaturated with pathological positivity it's exciting to hear such an emotionally generous band. Their music somehow makes you want to dance and cry at the same time, it's a rare and honest dichotomy.Join East Coast DNA Host Darcy Walsh for a chat with front person Dillon Ryan as we dive into the band, the music, where they came from and where they're headed next.00:00 East Coast DNA opening00:47 Dillon Ryan & the Solar Eclipse02:15 The Dream Romantic07:15 Making music on the East Coast 10:20 "John Mullane" sound13:33 Fan first22:35 Influences30:04 Dillon Ryan & The Dream Romantic - So Lovely (from the upcoming "In Polaroid")Dillon Ryan - Lead Vocals, GuitarsJulie Doucette - Keyboards, VocalsDavid Gregory - Bass GuitarAlec Victor - DrumsFind Dillon and his band online at: www.thedreamromantic.com@DillonRyanMusic Subscribe to@eastcoastdnafor more arts + music coverage from and around Canada's East Coast.

Bud Chapplain joins East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat about his music career and deliver an important message with his new single:Anxiety Denied: A Song of Hope inspired by personal experience to highlight Canada’s new988 Suicide Crisis LineAnnapolis Valley, Nova Scotia — Anxiety Denied is powerful anthem written by Bud Chapplain and Eric C Mestre, two resilient individuals who transformed their family experiences of mental illness into a source of inspiration. Anxiety Denied aims to shine a spotlight on the impact of mental illness and the launch of Canada's 988 Suicide Crisis Line, providing a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges. In a heartfelt expression of their journey, the lyrics convey the raw emotions of battling mental health issues and finding solace amid darkness. “Mental health issues have been front and center in my family’s life from depression to alcohol addiction to bipolar disorder”, Bud shares. Eric grew up with an alcoholic father and his younger brother, Ricky lost his life at a young age due to alcohol abuse. His life has been affected by mental illness and he still suffers from those memories.“As musicians, we wanted to write about it and tell this story. When we found out about the Canadian launch of 988, we felt sharing our experiences would be the most effective way to connect with people and to get the message out.” Anxiety Denied urges individuals to reach out for help and support through the newly established 988 Suicide Crisis Line.Bud says that “watching my wife bravely battle anxiety and depression, my daughter being diagnosed with bi-polar and borderline personality disorder, and experiencing my struggles with addiction, along with Eric’s lifetime memories of his brother Ricky’s untimely death have supplied all the ingredients we needed to make this song a true song of pain, suffering and most of all hope.” They believe music possesses a unique ability to connect with people on a profound level. Bud wrote the melody and lyrics while his writing partner Eric created the music. Eric arranged the song, played, and programmed all the instruments and gave the song life. Together they gathered other music industry professionals who were also mental health supporters and finalized the music video.Bud reached out to the government office responsible for the 988 roll out and was told that they were not doing a music video as part of the roll out. The boys did not quit or throw in the towel. Bud, Eric and their friends pushed forward wanting only to make sure Anxiety Denied brought its timely message to people and it would help people remember who to call when they are having a mental health crisis.Their hope is that people will share this soul-stirring composition over social media. This will help breakdown the stigma surrounding mental illness and to encourage people to reach out for help when they are in trouble and in need of immediate support.Join us in sharing the music video and spreading the word about Anxiety Denied and the importance of 988 to prevent people from dying by suicide. Together, let's create a chorus of compassion and understanding, reminding everyone that they are not alone in their struggles.About Bud:Bud, a songwriter, singer, and musician, is a passionate advocate for mental health, using his creative talents to make a positive impact. His song, born from personal experiences, serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity for those navigating the complexities of mental health. About Eric:Eric is a songwriter, singer, musician and producer. His experience and talents have helped many other musicians achieve their musical dreams. He has a passion for helping others get through mental health issues.

Darcy Walsh of East Coast DNA sits down for a chat with Silas Bonnell.www.silasbonnell.com00:00 Introduction featuring Silas Bonnell's Japanese Daylight00:15 Darcy Walsh chats with Silas15:25 Sila Bonnell's Japanese Daylight featuring Eliza RhinelanderSilas Bonnell is an incredibly versatile Halifax born singer, songwriter, producer, engineer, and instrumentalist. Having made many albums of his own, Bonnell is now branching out to work with other artists creating their vision for their music. Growing up in Nova Scotia, Canada having family roots digging deep into Newfoundland, he grew up with a large influence of East Coast folk music. On top of that his father was a professional gospel singer, (classically trained in Tampa, Florida), the first music he got his hands on were southern gospel records. Silas started singing in a small Baptist church in Dartmouth, NS, where he attended with his family growing up. Instrument wise Silas first picked up the ukelele at age 4 learning to play simple chords, and old tunes such as “I want a girl” by Al Jolson. At age 5 Silas branched off from the ukelele to the acoustic guitar whereby the time he was 8 had saved up enough money to buy his first own guitar. A Yamaha APX 500. By the time Silas had tuned 10, he had around 150 gospel songs under his belt by memory.Writing songs didn’t become an interest to Bonnell until he was 15, when he started writing his very first song for a girl he liked at the time. Music production followed then very soon after when he bought his first Scarlett 2i2 pack to record his newly written songs. A few months later after writing a collection of songs, “Tonight” was released as the first single off his new demo album “Pieces of my heart”. Following that came 3 more demo albums (Pretty as a sunset, Letters, and A girl). Bonnell’s first actual traction came from his second studio album Lady, where he had songs that gained popularity such as “Pink if she loved me”, (that went 17th on CIOE Top 30) and “Lady” that became a crowd favorite in live shows. Post Lady came Serenity with his second most streamed song to date “Starlight”. Also, in 2022 “Yellow house lane” was released giving fans a country/pop rock album to feel out. Yellow house lane came with new crowd favorites such as country blues song “Alaska” and deeply personal songs like “Antidote”, and “Emotionless”. Into 2023 Bonnell released his first full pop album Lights including new exiting features such as Fiona Clancey (Flowers in your garden), and wil C (Suave and Raindrops).Currently Bonnell is playing shows all over Nova Scotia and working on his next studio album with incredible artists such as Eliza Rhinelander, and Fiona Clancey, as well as instrumentalist’s and writers such as Braydon and Leo Cox. Join East Coast DNA in congratulating Nova Scotian R&B artist JupiterReign for her 2023 African Nova Scotia Music Association (ANSMA) Rising Star Award. A product of North Preston, the largest black community in Canada, JupiterReign has been steadily carving her own lane in the Nova Scotian music scene. Released earlier this year, on Valentine’s Day, Intergalactic originated as a project in the Music Arts program at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). Drawing inspiration from her community, family and personal struggles, she complemented Intergalactic dense grooves with a lyrical content reflective of relationships, ups-and-downs, and her outlook on life in general.00:00 Intro featuring clip from Vibes by JupiterReign w/MAJE00:11 Darcy Walsh chats with Thaydra Gray aka JupiterReign19:35 Don't Wanna from JupiterReign's IntergalaticRecorded between Halifax and Montreal, her debut album, Intergalactic, is a five song EP packed with entrancing, soulful, casually poetic, slow-tempo R&B. Don’t Wanna, the EP’s lead single, was co-produced with award-winning artist Reeny Smith. When asked about what it meant to be nominated, JupiterReign replied: “I feel so honored and blessed to have been chosen for these nominations. My journey of creating music has been a roller-coaster of feelings and emotions, but none of these I’d trade for anything.” “Being vulnerable and letting your thoughts and feelings out for the world to hear is scary. But we need these storytellers. People need someone or something to feel connected to, so they know they aren’t alone, and I’m happy to be that person... But the work doesn’t stop here. I have [many] more creations under my belt, and I can’t wait for the world to hear.” JupiterReign will be performing at Nova Scotia Music Week in Yarmouth, where she is also nominated as African Nova Scotian Artist of the Year. All this recognition for her work has brought JupiterReign a considerable amount of buzz and has peoples’ heads turning: “This is just the beginning, and I aim to use my music to become one of Canada’s best R&B stars, recognized on a global scale.”Find JupiterReign online: https://linktr.ee/jupiterreignSubscribe to @eastcoastdna For the month of October 2023, a new live shot video will be posted for every new Subscriber to our channel. Jessica Rhaye joins East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat about her career in music, her new album, her band, and upcoming tour. With the release of Sunshine Baby, Jessica Rhaye’s second album with The Ramshackle Parade, the New Brunswick-based singer/songwriter expands her reach as a lyricist and vocalist with a set of alternately personal and observational songs that manage to be incredibly intimate and cinematic in scope simultaneously. While Rhaye illuminates the darker corners of her world on some tracks, the album’s lead single and title track makes it clear she’s ever lost sight of the possibility for redemption and hope. The result is a beautiful and powerful album – one that telegraphs the joy and depth of connection Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade have found in working together in equal measure.00:00 Introduction00:50 Solo music career06:10 Graphic Design14:50 The Ramshackle Parade16:30 Tour19:00 The sound of Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade23:20 Influences30:23 I Feel Fine by Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle ParadeFind Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade online:https://jessicarhaye.bandcamp.com/ (check out the vinyl!)https://www.jessicarhaye.com/ @JessicaRhayeMusic Find Jessica Rhaye Design online: https://www.jessicarhayedesign.com/Catch Jessica Rhaye and The Ramshackle Parade live: https://www.jessicarhaye.com/showsThursday, Sept 28, 2023 - Charlottetown, PEI - Trailside Music HallSaturday, Sept 30, 2023 - Saint John, NB - Imperial Theatre Thursday, October 19, 2023 - Halifax, NS - The CarletonFriday, October 20, 2023 - Shelburne, NS - The Osprey Arts Centre Saturday, October 21, 2023 - Fredericton, NB - Charlotte Street Arts CentreMonday, October 23, 2023 - Montreal, QC - Casa Del Popolo Tuesday, October 24, 2023 - Toronto, ON - The Dakota Tavern Presents: Four PlayWednesday, October 25, 2023 - London, ON - Aeolian Hall Thursday, October 26, 2023 - Hamilton, ON - Mills Hardware Friday, October 27, 2023 - Ottawa, ON - The Redbird Live Saturday, October 28, 2023 - Smiths Falls, ON - Station TheatreSubscribe to @eastcoastdna for more music and arts coverage from Eastern Canada

Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with Rheo Junior of The Living Walls.
The Living Walls is a four-piece band from Halifax that hitch-hikes on the road between The Band and J.J. Cale, and they just got picked up by a Bob Dylan impersonator in a sketchy looking pickup.
The group began as a free-form songwriting hang – “throw any idea at the wall, it may bounce off or it may take root” – and evolved into a band featuring members of Wharf Rats, Keith Hallett & The Hookers, The Ordeals, & The Chronos Band.
The Living Walls’ debut release, “Dishpan Larry”, introduces a colorful character who’s the apple of his mother’s eye and the hero of the walking trail.

Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with @SkyeWallace With a skill in carving melodies and shreddable moments from rock foundations, Skye Wallace is also an expert at proving herself in every room, at every turn. The guitar-slinging Canadian road warrior has honed a visceral and honest sound, permeating equal parts Courtney Barnett, Patti Smith, and Neil Young’s Marshall Stack era. A live show from Skye and her band is guaranteed to make you let loose and feel something. Shaped by an upbringing of constant motion, and a career that has seen her tour the country endlessly with respected acts such as Matt Mays and Crown Lands, Wallace is at home with the idea that change, especially in oneself, is a constant. This truism, equal parts empirical and emotional, has shaped these new songs, finished during lockdown but dealing with a time when staying in one place was wishful thinking. For Wallace, there’s both comfort and conflict in remembering and reconciling the versions of herself formed at the many stops along the way. 00:00 Intro featuring Skye Wallace - Tear A Piece (Bite Me) clip00:31 Interview with Skye Wallace29:49 Skye Wallace - The Doubt from Terribly GoodSubscribe to @eastcoastdna for music scene chats and live performances.Find Skye Wallace online:https://www.skyewallace.com/Tough Kid Drops Sept 12Catch Skye live:US ⚡️Sept 9 Cincinnati, OH Ohio @isforloversfestival Sept 10 Pelham, TN Tennessee @isforloversfestival EU ⚡️Sept 12 Hamburg, DE @nochtspeicher Sept 13 Krefeld, DE @kulturrampe_krefeld Sept 14 Karlsruhe, DE @altehackerei Sept 15 Coburg, DE @sonderbar_coburg Sept 16 Offenbach, DE @hafen2.offenbach Sept 18 Leipzig, DE @werk2leipzig Sept 19 Stuttgart, DE @cafegalao Sept 22 Copenhagen, DK @raahuset Sept 24 Berlin, DE @privatclub_berlinUK ⚡️Sept 27 London, UK @thegraceldn Sept 28 Camberley, UK @loginlounge EU ⚡️Sept 29 Roeselare, BE @de_mooie_molen Oct 2 Mainz, DE @caveau_mz Oct 4 Marburg, DE @qmarburg1 Oct 5 Siegen, DE @schluesselstelle Oct 6 Offenburg, DE @361grad_im_spitalkeller Oct 12 Foggia, IT @cantine_arpi Oct 14 Como, IT @joshuabluesclub Oct 15 Somma Lombardo, IT @castello_visconti_di_san_vito

Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with Future Dad! John Mullane is Producer x Composer x Mixer x Songwriter from Halifax, Nova Scotia. As the driving force behind the band In-Flight Safety John made records, toured the world then pressed repeat for over a decade. The band kicked off its career with a glowing – and out of the blue – endorsement from David Bowie. The cinematic and uplifting music they created left an indelible mark on the east coast of Canada and beyond. Always the producer in the band John honed his technical chops. He slowly transitioned his studio space in Halifax into an artist friendly song factory and began working full time as a producer, mixer, composer and songwriter around 2016.His love of recording started with a 4-track in 1999. To this day he is always listening and always challenging his technical skills in search of creating the best song possible. @absolutelosers2526
Having just returned from an East Coast loop with Canadian all star supergroup TUNS (members from Sloan, The Inbreds, and The Super Friendz). Their momentum continues this year as they released their album "At The Mall", mixed by Canada’s own Graham Walsh of Holy Fuck, on August 4th.
Emerging on the scene in 2019, Absolute Losers, a post-punk trio hailing from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. They have been making waves on the red sand shores of Spud Island, with their wiry guitar licks and upbeat drum and bass. Releasing their first singles “Coexist / Astray” in 2021, the trio are following up their success with their debut album “At The Mall”. Consisting of 12 songs to dance and bob your head to, it's a front to back dance party. And with Sam Langille’s poetic, quirky and exciting lyrics they will make you smile around every punchy bass line and fun melotic wire of the guitar. This album is guaranteed to make your body unable to resist making a dance move no matter where you are!

Join East Coast DNA co-host Darcy Walsh as he visits Shoebox Cantina, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, for a chat with Antigonish based indie rock band Gardener.
Stay until the end of the episode for live performances of their brand new 2023 single Captain and I'm Broke (from their 2022 album Nothing Changes).
Gardener is the garage rock project of Nova Scotian indie-folk musician Landon Morris. Starting in November of 2021, Gardener provided Morris with an outlet to write louder, more experimental music, while still retaining the fundamentals of his solo material - catchy melodies, intricate songwriting, and simple arrangements, met with walls of fuzz and distortion. With a true DIY ethos, the music is recorded on home equipment, often spawned from jam sessions with friends. When playing live, Gardener consists of musicians Nathan Langley (bass), Alasdair Cameron (drums), and Magnus Labillois (lead guitar), while Landon plays rhythm guitar and sings.
With hints of Weezer, Built To Spill, and Alvvays,"Captain" turns the Gardener project into a new direction; stronger melodies, more careful arrangements, and more intricate songwriting. The newest release from the Nova Scotian garage rock project details a dream of being a captain lost at sea, accepting his fate as the waves rise high over the ship, and seeing an apparition of his newly-departed lover in the storm clouds. The song's driving drums, smooth bass, impassioned vocals, jangly lead guitar, and thick walls of fuzz blend together to create a layered song that feels as loud as it does melancholy; but in the waves, making peace with your fate is liberating

Moncton, NB (June 28, 2023) Canadian rock band The Monoxides have released their first new music in more than two decades with the unveiling of their new single, "Let Her Know." The track is one of two new singles the band has slated for release in 2023 with a new, full-length album on the horizon for 2024.
Drawing influence from their heroes in bands like Kiss and Cheap Trick, “Let Her Know” sees the group proudly wearing their influences on their sleeves, with an infectious intertwining of guitar harmonies, pulsing rhythm and melodic vocals.
"We’re thrilled to finally be releasing new music,” says guitarist-vocalist Steve Hickox. “It’s been a long time coming, but thankfully with all the live shows we’ve been playing over the past two decades, the chemistry between us has never gone away. We really feel like we’re picking up right where we left off 23 years ago, and we hope our fans and friends feel that way too when they hear the new tunes.”

Join Darcy Walsh for a chat with Avery Dakin
Steeped in vintage sensibilities and powerful emotion, paired with her dreamy, delicate vocals reminiscent of crooners of eras past, Avery Dakin fuses old and new in her dynamic, thoughtfully crafted Pop/R&B music. Dakin’s lyrical sensitivity, impassioned storytelling, and varied arrangements and styles can be found, emerging from the shadows into the light, in her debut EP Settle Down, which explores themes of mental health, love, and loss.
Dakin’s soft-hearted, soulful accounts of life’s most intimate moments are youthful and refreshing, at times playful and cheeky, while still reflecting her old soul and capacity for rawness. Cushioned within lush, shimmering harmonies and longing melodies, bathing in a soft sweetness, her music implores you to sway along to the sounds of heartache, introspection, and a woman finding her voice in spite, and because of it all.
Between performing with her 7-piece band across Nova Scotia and teaching music, Avery has been busy writing and co-producing her debut album, Bloom, set to be released in the early summer of 2023.
Now you can stream Dakin's single, Bloom, a soothing love letter to the renewed life and energy that springtime brings to the heart and mind each year. Brad Reid returns to East Coast DNA's apartment studio for a catch up chat with Darcy Walsh and treats everyone to a little performance along the way.
Nova Scotia fiddler Brad Reid fuses traditional Cape Breton fiddle with modern acoustic pop and jazz on his new album The Bridge, available everywhere as of May 19, 2023.
"The Bridge” is 10 brand new tracks of original tunes, inspired by connecting the old Cape Breton traditions with modern acoustic pop and jazz, from the great Scottish and Cape Breton composers, to contemporary pop and jazz artists like Taylor Swift and Herbie Hancock.
Reid describes his album as “like jam session where everyone comes from a different style of music, but then they just let go, and in that moment, that’s when the music transcends genres”.

The sun is shining, must be time to get outside. Join Darcy Walsh as he takes the Apartment Talk series outdoors for a little fresh air and a chat with alt-pop singer songwriter Apryll Aileen. (recorded May 27, 2023)
"Her sultry vocals, captivating lyrics and alluring stage presence make Apryll a fan favourite at music festivals worldwide. Aileen transcends genres, creating her own undefinable sound with influences coming from pop, rock, blues and jazz. She doesn’t imitate – she creates. A hybrid of two polarities, she blends melodic songwriting and raspy vocal tones from modern artists such as Halsey and Miley Cyrus but with the storytelling edge of Stevie Nicks."

East Coast DNA: Apartment Talk is back with another Outback Edition, as Brian Doucette drives out of the smoke from the HRM wildfires and joins Darcy Walsh for a chat and fresh air.
Brian Doucette is an east coast rocker born and raised in Cape Breton Island now based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has 3 full length studio albums with a 4th and 5th in production. His 4th album (the second album produced by Josh Kelly at The Basement Halifax), "If You Can't Be Good, Be Careful Vol 1" is being released on June 30th.
Brian's style has been described by some as acoustic thrash. He blends hard rock, country, rap, Celtic, blues and punk to produce a very original sound that he holds near and dear. He's had 4 songs reach the Top 10 on the CIOE Top 30 and has just went into their Hall Of Fame for his song Light It Up. He's been compared to Dropkick Murphy's, The Stansfield's, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime and Classified just to name a few.
Brian has played in venues all over the Maritimes, as well as throughout Canada. He's also played numerous venues in Nashville, Hollywood and Honolulu. He's departing on a trip to Alberta where he's got some shows booked throughout the province and look out for more dates when he returns to the East Coast.
There are 3 videos released, so far, from Brian's If You Can't Be Good, Be Careful Vol 1 album. Check 'em out here:

Join East Coast DNA as Darcy Walsh chats with Jamie MacDonald about his death metal project Paranormal Arson."Paranormal Arson is a death metal project from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada led by Jamie MacDonald. The goal of the Paranormal Arson project is simple: make straight-forward, old-school flavoured death metal that is as pummeling as it is catchy. To cut straight through to the listeners guts while still grabbing them with grooves and hooks. Drawing inspiration from death metal acts from Obituary, Deicide, and Suffocation, to Canada's own Cryptopsy and Gorguts, Paranormal Arson creates an impenetrable sonic wall. If you like your metal to have the subtlety of a nitro Funny Car, this is for you."

Already we have found ways to experience our own highs and lows that come along with being a team, trying our best to take in and take down everything that comes our way. That being said, WHYGO is proud to announce the release of our first single, “On the Line!” As we all took our first trip into the studio, the experience was surreal. We believe in this song, and tracking our first piece together is a huge milestone as well as motivation to keep doubling down on what we feel we can achieve. We put our entire heart and soul into this track, and we hope that you can all do the same for us, as this will be the first of many things to come from us to you. We have so much more to do, and we couldn’t do it without you, so we want you all to come along with us🤘🏻Keep an eye out for “On the Line,” Friday, February 3rd!"-Ylinktr.ee/whygo
