On Determination, Deliberation, and Dragons, Izzy (she/her) and Peter (they/them) chat about creative writing while workshopping stories of our own. Our goal is to become better writers, and to share some of our insights along the way. Each episode, we'll discuss all the ingredients that go into writing a great story from setting and characters to, of course, the apocalypse! There's really not one "right" way to become a great writer, but hopefully this podcast will be a way for us (and maybe for you too!) to get a little better practicing and thinking about writing, and generally just having a good time together. So if you're someone who really likes creative writing, enjoys reading late into the night, or wants to hear our thoughts on the best dragon (spoiler alert: every dragon is the best), then join us on our writing quest!

We interviewed an author who wrote a Star Wars short story! Laura Pohl is the author of "Trooper Trouble" in the anthology series "From a Certain Point of View." Her story is featured in the Return of the Jedi book. It tells the story of a stormtrooper tasked with standing in the hanger of the Death Star as important members of the Empire visit the new battle station. Working for the Empire comes with some problems: the working hours are long, the coworkers are difficult to get along with, no one is training them to use blasters, the paychecks have all been delayed, and there isn't any caf in the breakroom. It's a fun story that sheds some light on one of the largest and most unappreciated workforces in the Empire.
We had so much fun talking with Laura about her short story and what it was like being able to publish a story in the Star Wars universe. We hope that you enjoy our conversation!

Star Wars. It's a wide and fascinating galaxy filled with all sorts of landscapes and people, and yet time and time again we seem to return to desert planets that seem to resemble this thing called "The Orient." Welcome to season 2 of Determination, Deliberation, and Dragons! For this season, we will primarily be workshopping stories written by a few of our friends. Each month, one of our writers will share a story with us, and the entire group (all 8 writers) will offer feedback. In this episode, we'll be introducing you to our wonderful cast of writers and talking a little bit about what you can expect in season 2. In addition to the workshops, get ready for some fun episodes including a conversation with author Owen King, a look into how Orientalism is present in the Star Wars universe, Izzy's quest to get Peter to watch more Studio Ghibli, and so much more!

Now that we've workshopped each of the nine shorter stories that make up the first Pana book, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the book as a whole. In this workshop, we welcome back Master of English Julie Wilson, and talk about characters, plot, LGBTQIA+ representation, and some predictions (and spoilers) for where the story will go from here.

The end is here! Not the end, but the end of what will hopefully be the first book in the Pana cycle (Peter is currently working on book 2). Pana finally reaches one of the world devastating weapons left over from The Cataclysm, and meets up with an old friend. We talk about finales: what makes a good one, what we want to see, what we don't want to see. To introduce the episode, we talk about the short show, Over the Garden Wall, created by Patrick McHale.
We are so excited to be airing this final Pana and Waveskimmer episode. It's been so much fun workshopping this story, and we hope that you enjoyed the journey as well. Now that Peter is in grad school and Izzy is working, we're not sure when future episodes will be coming out. We'd love to continue chatting about creative writing and sharing our thoughts and conversations with all of you. It would help us if you were to check out our Patreon, follow us on Twitter, rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts, and share the podcast with your friends, family, colleagues, students, neighbors, pets, or whoever you think might enjoy it.

Darth Maul was a fan favorite when he appeared in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Even after his apparent death, he returned to life in the animated show, Star Wars the Clone Wars, only to keep fighting his old enemies. Eventually, in Star Wars Rebels, the character dies for what may be the final time, exhausted, in the arms of Obi-Wan Kenobi. That scene has stood out to Peter for a while. They've heard various takes on the matter, and now offer their own interpretation of what occurred and what it teaches us.

Here on Determination, Deliberation, and Dragons, we love chatting about Disney's, The Owl House. We just watched the first episode of season 3, and wanted to share our thoughts with you. Is Belos or The Collector the better villain? How does the show diverge from our limited understanding of what horror is? Are Giraffes really that scary? We answer all these and more in this episode.

As we discuss the second to last short story in the Pana cycle, it seemed fitting to talk about rising action and the process by which we move a story to its epic conclusion. To help us think about rising action, we take a look at Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and how it prepares us - or doesn't - for Harry's confrontation with Voldemort.

In Peter's undergrad thesis, they explored the idea of the nation-state and how it is constructed through the collective imagination of different groups of people. They thought it would be interesting to look at the vibrant world of Avatar the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra, a world built on the premise of there being four distinct nations, and see how the shows can help us understand imagined communities.

We're slowly nearing the end of the Pana cycle! As Pana approaches the end of their journey and the overwhelming task set before them and has to make a decision, we thought it would be interesting to talk about Responsibility. And what better way to introduce that theme than through Avatar the Last Airbender, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

This may be Peter's favorite installment of the Pana cycle. Today, we workshop the sixth short story in the series, Visions. As the crew sails through the Hudson Bay, everyone begins to mysteriously fall asleep and have different visions. But what do these visions mean, and how will they alter Pana's journey as they continue to run from their past? We focus our conversation on the theme of perception, and use the book, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, as the starting point for our conversation.

Here on Determination, Deliberation, and Dragons, we love diving into a story and analyzing everything about it. So, we decided to do an episode by episode analysis of one of our favorite shows, The Owl House, created by Dana Terrace! On this first episode, Peter is joined by their cousin, Tess, as they begin to pick apart the series premiere. They talk about the various characters, the setting of The Boiling Isles, what magic is shown to be, and why giraffes were banished.

Peter has already talked about why Luz Noceda, the protagonist in Disney's The Owl House, is amazing, and now it's time to talk about another character from that show. Amity Blight is possibly their favorite character in the show, so much so that they even dyed their hair green to match her. Peter talks about Amity's progression from somewhat of an antagonist to the main love interest, how Amity works to be better, and how happiness plays into her role in the story.

In this Episode, Peter chats with Dr. Johnny Moreno about Disney's excellent animated show, The Owl House. Johnny is a doctor in Ecuador, and Peter met him while volunteering for Blanca's House. The two realized that they both enjoyed The Owl House, and we decided to invite Johnny on the podcast to continue the conversation that began in Ecuador. He talks about his experiences growing up in Ecuador and New York, what it means to feel the rain as opposed to just getting wet, and about the magic in all of our lives, as well as in the show.

Most Harry Potter fans know Bellatrix as Voldemort's lieutenant, his top Death Eater who is willing to do absolutely anything in his service. But what if she wasn't a Death Eater during the first Wizarding War? Voldemort claims that two Lestranges went to Azkaban for their service to him, but we know that there are actually three: Bellatrix, her husband Rodolphus, and his brother Rabastan. Is this just a typo, or is there something that fans of Harry Potter have missed all these years?

Happy holidays! We hope that you all are staying safe, and having a fantastic and restful holiday season. We would like to present you with a little gift. In our first episode, we workshopped a story written by Peter called Off The Scent, the first in a series of short stories about Pana and their dragon friend Waveskimmer. Though we gave a brief summary of the story in that episode, we realized that parts of our discussion may have been difficult to follow without actually reading the story for yourself. So, we decided to have Peter, someone who has avoided public speaking and acting for the greater part of 22.5 years, record themself reading the story for you. We hope you enjoy!

Welcome to the first episode of Determination, Deliberation, and Dragons, a podcast in which Izzy (she/her) and Peter (they/them) talk about various aspects of creative writing while workshopping their own stories. Our goal is to improve as writers and to share some helpful tips with you along the way. In this episode, Izzy and Peter introduce themselves, and talk about what makes a good introduction to a story while discussing the opening chapter in a series that Peter is currently working on involving dragons, friendship, and possible hypothermia. They'll be comparing this chapter to the opening chapter of the inimitable Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed, a sci-fi classic. We hope you enjoy our first episode!
