While in the middle of recording his audio book of SILENCE YOUR INNER PHARISEE, Jon lost his temporary crown. But it didn't stop him from recording this final episode of the season. Coincidentally, the topic of this episode is "pain" and how it can draw us to Christ.
Jon features a moving story included in his book. It's the story of how physical pain has drawn Jim Van Houten closer to the Savior. Jim cites three Bible passages that help him make it through:
While going through intense physical pain, Jim has also experienced tragic emotional pain with the loss of a son. Jim and his wife, JeanneKay, told their moving story in previous episode. We have included it in this episode. Witness the power and comfort of God in their lives.

It's summer grilling time, and Jon Fugler was the meat this week. Moody Radio Chicago was the setting this past Monday. Here's how they described the show, which is the content of this episode of the podcast:
Today, on Karl and Crew Mornings, we discussed overcoming performance Christianity. What does it look like to arise above the notion that performance equals faith? It's not about what we do for Christ...it's living with Him (John 15:5). Our special guest was Jon Fugler. He is the Founder and CEO of Fresh Faith 24/7. We highlighted his book, "Silence Your Inner Pharisee", and he unpacked his own testimony of overcoming performance Christianity.

It's a celebration! A few minutes ago, I was on social media with a live event -- my Book Release Celebration and Dedication of SILENCE YOUR INNER PHARISEE: Ditch Performance and Embrace Radical Freedom in Christ.
This episode is the audio from that live stream. Go behind the scenes with me and hear the core message in the book. It's a book of stories-- my story, your story and the stories of believers who have experienced freedom in the relationship with Christ. Each story comes from a different angle.
Be encouraged as you listen.

You might be a long-time Christian like I am. And you might have a problem that goes like this: We know we’re saved by grace, but we struggle to live by grace. We know it but we don’t live it.
I don’t want to speak for everyone, but if you’re someone who is doing a bunch of stuff for God and you feel that it makes your relationship healthy, you know what I mean. We may not come out and say that we’re not living by grace, but our life shows it. And we dry up spiritually because of it.
Well, today you’ll gain insight on how to break free from that mentality and hamster wheel living.
In this episode, we’re going to get out our pickaxe and shovel. We’re going to do some digging together, because we’re about to discover that knowing Christ comes in layers. You’re a performer for Christ, so you like the idea of working at this relationship. Well, it may not be what you think.
So how are you doing in your relationship with God? Is it healthy? How healthy? I’ve developed a Spiritual Self-Assessment that will give you some answers. This self-assessment will take just 3 minutes. It includes some probing questions that will give you the honest truth about your relationship with Christ. Go get it now and take it. It’s free when you go HERE.
What’s the payoff for stepping out of performance Christianity? How will my life be different? Let me take it deeper and focus on this whole concept of knowing Christ. How does knowing Christ—which is the antidote for performance Christianity—play out in real life? After a lot of study of the Word, and personal experience, I’ve outlined 11 Big Promises of Freedom from Performance Christianity. In Episode 30, I went through them all. But here, today, I want to spotlight three of them:
Do any of these sound good to you? Are you wanting these things? These are benefits of knowing Christ, really knowing him. Good-bye performance, hello knowing Jesus. This podcast exists to release you from bondage and live in freedom in your walk with Christ. FRESH FAITH 24/7 is the only place I know that has a sole focus on this. Content, community and coaching that make freedom possible. Check it out at www.freshfaith247.com.
I’ve wrestled with the concept of knowing Jesus. It’s gone on for quite some time. For how many years, I am not sure. But I do know that finally grasping this concept has rocked my world. I feel like I have come home. Knowing Jesus is the secret to life. Paul knew it. He stated it.
“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.” (Phil 3:8 NIV)
There is richness and depth in that verse.
Knowing Jesus is like digging through several strata of rock and clay. Every strata is well-defined and we discover something new at every level. The Lord doesn’t desire to be known at a distance. He desires close, deep, intimate fellowship with me.
We can know someone on the surface, but until we spend time with that person, we won’t know them deeply. Time with Jesus opens the door for me to know him as he wants me to.
Let’s go back to the rock and clay. We have to dig to get to the next layer and uncover its beauty and uniqueness. This takes time, effort, tenacity. So it is with my relationship with God.
I have to take time. Jesus doesn’t get my leftovers. He gets my best time.
I have to be tenacious. Is every quiet time with Jesus filled with overflowing blessing? No. There are days when I’m tired, can’t concentrate, dry or preoccupied. That’s life. That’s the reality of relationship. But I come back the next day and seek his face.
I have to put forth the effort. Hey Jon, you’re getting into performance. No I’m not. Let me explain. Performance Christianity means that my relationship with Christ is defined by my effort. The more I put out, the closer I perceive I am to God.
On the other hand, putting forth the effort to know Christ simply creates an environment where I can develop intimacy with him. Also, as I put forth effort in prayer, listening to God, reading his Word and sitting before him, the richness of relationship grows. My effort doesn’t define the relationship. It makes relationship possible.
Time, tenacity and effort will lead to continually deepening my relationship with Jesus.
We can approach knowing Christ as if it’s a hide-and-seek game. God is out there somewhere and we’re doing our job to find him. He wants to make us work to get to know him. Our effort will determine his willingness to reveal himself to us.
The opposite true.
In reality, God has the most important role in our relationship. He took the initiative to start it:
“For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:8 ESV)
We were enemies but he removed the barrier to knowing him. We didn’t even know we needed to know Christ! Yet, Jesus died so we could taste a relationship with God. Why in the world would he give us a taste and then withhold the whole meal?
God is the one who opens our eyes, spirits and hearts -- or we’d never seek him in the first place. Look at these affirmations.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.” (John 6:44 ESV)
“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” (John 6:37 ESV) We can’t resist God. Notice that God reaches out and we respond.
Our relationship with Christ is reciprocal. Jesus moves towards us and we move towards him. I love the way James puts it, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8 ESV)
Psalm 145:19 assures us that “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” (ESV)
Get to know Jesus. Dig, dig dig. Know him in peace and know him in trials. Look to Jesus every minute of the day.
Above all, spend time in the Word. That’s where you’ll discover the wonderful layers of who Jesus is.
Will I someday know Jesus like Paul did? I hope so. In my optimism, I say yes. Truthfully, though, I don’t want to go through the harrowing suffering that Paul endured. I’m soft. I hope I can know Jesus as intimately as Paul with a much less intense journey. Yet, in my heart of hearts, I know that’s not possible. I’m still wrestling with this, as you might be.
I do know this: Whatever our lot in life, we are called to know Christ Jesus. Every one of our experiences will be different. We may know Christ in the quietness of our personal meeting space with him. Or it could be in our battle with cancer. Or loss of a spouse. Or enduring pain and illness. Or walking as the lone Christian at work. Or in the wonderful setting of a loving family.
Christ can be found and known anywhere. Today is your day to know Christ. Tomorrow is, too. And the next day. It’s a journey. A journey that includes this moment.
Will you set aside time to learn something about Jesus every day? Will you pray to your Savior each day? Will you put a circle of protection around hallowed time with him? Don’t let others interrupt. Stow away, if necessary, even in a genuine prayer closet. Guard your fellowship with Jesus. You need it if you intend to know your Savior as he wants to be known.
INTERVIEW SEGMENT WITH ERIC NEVINS
Our guest in this episode has a story to tell. In this midst of that story, you’ll learn how he began connecting with God in a fresh way. You’ll hear how the Word of God became central in that transformation. And you’ll learn about Lectio Divina.
Eric Nevins hosts the podcast Halfway There, where he features Christians who are on the journey. Real people with down-to-earth stories of their walks with Christ. I wanted to talk with Eric about his story and how he has experienced fresh faith. And we talked about performance. One thing I discovered about Eric—there was one book – outside the Bible-- that turned both of our lives around. Listen to my conversation with Eric Nevins.

You are in prison if you’re living performance-based Christianity. You’ll dry up, hate your life with God, seek after worldly passions to satisfy, and end up broken and brokenhearted.
Are my words too strong? Take it from someone who has been there, my words are not too strong.
You might be there right now, or on the edge.
You’re doing all the right things. Yet, you’re dying inside. You know it but others don’t. And you’re ashamed to admit it because this shouldn’t be happening.
Or, you could be on the opposite end of the spectrum. You’ve had it with Christianity. You’re distant from God. He’s a cold being rather than a warm friend. You’ve walked away from healthy spiritual habits, the Bible and prayer are empty, you’re disillusioned with the Christian life and have little or no desire to go to a church of any kind.
Friend, it’s time for God to melt your heart. The better you know Jesus, the more your confused, hard heart will soften. Another way of putting it is that you’ll be set free from the spiritual prison you’ve created for yourself. You thought it was a palace, but it has become a dungeon.
Jesus is waiting for you to meet him in a new way. On his beautiful, loving, grace-filled terms. He has no expectations that are more important than your relationship with him. This is where a vibrant spiritual life starts, continues and ends. All the way to your last day on earth.
In this episode, Jon tells his story of moving from performance to freedom in his relationship with Christ.
Then you'll be challenged by our guest in the featured interview. Philipp Ruesch nails us on the topic of hurry. Running too fast for too long will cut into your intimacy with Christ. And it feeds performance Christianity. Hear Philipp's story and his solution.

New season, new name, same purpose.
Many believers struggle with performing for God, while suffering in their relationship with Christ. Jon Fugler addresses this problem as Season 2 of the podcast begins. In fact, you'll notice the podcast has a new name as we refine our focus on the issue of performance Christianity. FRESH FAITH in Real Life is now Overcoming Performance Christianity.
Jon's guest this episode is Bruce McNicol, founder of True Face, through which he has helped leaders around the world for decades. He is a co-author of a number of books, including The Ascent of a Leader and Behind the Mask. Bruce shares a profound way we can move from performing to knowing in our relationship with Christ. He lays out a practice we can adopt.
In this episode, Jon also shares 11 big promises you'll experience as you peel away performance in your relationship with God.

Featured Guest:
Erik Reed, and his wife, Katrina, went through a tough, tough experience in their lives. And as I talked with Erik, he was so open about the struggles and the victories, the lows and the highs. And how God met his family where they were at. Our focus in this interview is on forgiveness. When I think of fresh faith in real life, this is it. Erik will tell you about his background, and we’re going to follow the sequence of events and his work and ministry seasons.
We all know that forgiveness isn’t easy. There’s sacrifice. A price has to be paid. And I don’t think there is a formula for forgiveness, as is evident from Erik and his family’s life. It’s a process. But most importantly, a process where Christ must be at the center. It’s our only hope.

Freedom is our topic this week.
What are the pain points that stop you from having freedom in your relationship with Jesus? Stress, fatigue, hurry, loneliness, lack of purpose, health issues, private sins, burnout and weak faith hinder our pathway to freedom. As believers, it's not supposed to be that way, but it often is. These things affect and enslave us, preventing us from experiencing freedom in Christ.
But there's a solution.
Jon Fugler fields the questions from best-selling Christian author and podcaster Parker J. Cole, as he was a guest on her show. You'll find out how to overcome the obstacles to living in freedom in Christ.
Looking for the path to freedom? The core of the FRESH FAITH 24/7 Membership is the Freedom Path Training, a dynamic video series hosted by Jon. To dive into it, start your 30-day free trial in FRESH FAITH 24/7.
P.S. A note from Jon:
Watch out what you pray for. You might get it, but not the way you think. If you receive my Fresh Bread devotional emails, you might remember that I asked you for prayer. Here’s what I wrote:
Lately, life has been a blur. I’ve been busy
Too busy.
So pray for me to get back into that rhythm of knowing Jesus.
It’s the best place to be.
Thanks so much!
Well, little did I know God would give me a time out. When I sent that email, I was coming down with Covid. And, if you’ve been following my story, I was stranded on an island. Talk about slowing down. I was quarantined to my hotel room with God, and we had some good conversations.
I’ll tell you, I did slow down and I’m glad I did. So here I am, back home. I hope I’ve learned a lesson I will continue to apply. I know I need to slow down my pace and change my rhythm.

The Parker J. Cole Show
Now I can say I've done a show with Covid. Quarantined in a hotel room on an island, I borrowed a professional microphone, had access to Zoom, and way we went. More details inside.
This week, meet Steve Hodgson, a man who has experienced a major shift in his relationship with Christ in the past two years. I’ve known our guest for over a decade, developing a deep friendship during that time. We’ve served side-by-side in missions, have been part of a really powerful men’s group, have laughed together, shared together, broken bread together. I think we’ve even cried together.
He has lived a life of significance in building the body of Christ-- as a pastor, church planter, Christian education leader and ministry leader. His passion for reaching the lost has always made me marvel. And the way he values people is an example to all of us.
But, as he’ll share, there was something missing until recently. Steve Hodgson and his wife, Laurie, live in Florida, just down south from my wife and I in North Carolina. But in this interview we’re thousands of miles apart.
Wait it Out
That's what God has been teaching me the last few days in my Covid time-out.
As I record this episode, I am still in quarantine. It lasts for another three days. Don’t feel sorry for me, though. The symptoms are manageable, I have a delivery service app for groceries and meals. And there is a refrigerator in my room. Being on a resort island is, in itself, part of the humor, because I can’t go anywhere.
Seriously, I am grateful this wasn’t worse than it could have been. My case is mild compared to many who have suffered or even died. I’m starting to turn the corner.
No wake-up alarm the past three days.
It’s amazing how that has changed my pace in the morning. I feel more relaxed. There’s a freedom. My adrenaline is not pumping. My blood pressure is probably down. Simply by the way I am entering the day.
I’ve learned that I can’t rush Covid. I have to wait it out. I’m wasting my energy trying to speed it up and get it out of my system. God will use this in my life. Don’t resist it. Rest. Spend more time with the Lord. God has given me a break from life to relax and enjoy him. Rather than seeing this virus as a curse, see it as a blessing. I’m not morbid, just saying that God’s purposes are greater than mine.
What is God asking you to wait out? Are you fighting against this verse, “A man’s mind plans his ways, but the Lord directs his steps?”
I've got more to say about that in this episode. I hope it will help you in your faith journey.
Enjoy!

Some of the best quotes I’ve heard about God’s will come from Chuck Swindoll:
Knowing God’s will is something every believer hungers for, especially at critical crossroads of life. You might be in that place right now.
Whether it’s one of the biggies like career, spouse, location or just the little things of life, we want God to reveal the answer to us.
In this episode, I pull the curtain back and share a story from my life. Our guest, Wayne Pederson, shares his experience of discovering God's will at critical crossroads in his life.
Wayne recently shared with a group of us about how God led him each time. I was fascinated, so I asked him to come on the podcast. Wayne Pederson and I have served in missions media ministry together for many years. We’re both part of the leadership of the Alliance for the Unreached.
Wayne has led two major Christian radio networks—Northwestern and Moody. He was also the CEO of Reach Beyond, and serves on many ministry boards, including one he’ll tell us about in our fascinating interview. Wayne is so approachable and friendly, as you’ll hear in the interview. Before we got into the topic of God’s will, I asked Wayne to tell us about a fascinating experience he just had.
You'll learn solid principles you can apply to making major decisions in your life.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read that has changed your life with God? That book might be right at the front of your mind. I am assuming it’s after the Bible.
Here are my top 5, as of today.
We’re doing something a little different this week, just to keep you on your toes. Earlier I asked you about your favorite book. My #1 book is one that totally changed my life. I’ve told you about it before, but this time I want to take you deep inside.
I want to give you a tour, because I think what the author shares with us is at the core of why I want to help a million believers know the Christ of the cross. This book hit me. It’s brilliant, by a brilliant man. I want to camp on the main points and see how God uses this in your life.
Also, I want to take you back to a couple of the most profound moments of FRESH FAITH IN REAL LIFE. There are some things that are just timeless. And what I’ll play for you are timeless thoughts.

How do you handle things when your plans are dashed? When a health issue puts life on hold? When tragedy hits and you have to come up with a Plan B? Or even hope to survive? That’s David Hess’ story. He was having a great career until something life-threatening happened that brought it to a sudden halt. He walks us through the details in this episode.
When I first heard David tell his story, I could tell he was a great example of a humble man. And he could be proud, because he’s talented, he’s risen to the top, and he has had tremendous blessings. But when you hear his heart, you’ll see that David is an ordinary guy in a Major League world. First, some back story.
There are some great podcasts out there that encourage us in our faith. One of them is Sports Spectrum. I contacted the host recently, Jason Romano, and said I was so moved by his interview with Major League pitcher David Hess. I said my listeners need to hear it, even if they aren’t sports fans. So I stole it! But, yes, with Jason’s permission. This interview is more than sports.

FEATURED SEGMENT:
One of the richest spiritual experiences I enjoy is taking a day away with God. I’ve heard others say the same thing.
There’s something special that happens when I have unrushed, often unstructured, time with God. I push away my regular activities and responsibilities to be with Jesus. It’s that simple. Yet, profound at the same time.
While I experience tremendous benefits from my day away with God, it’s not really about me. The day with Him is a time of fellowship and communion at a level that can’t happen any other way. My day away with God is really about Him. And I receive so many benefits.
Our guest today is a brother in Christ who got me started in this habit. It has absolutely changed my life.
This is the first guest who has joined me from Starbuck’s, but these days you can do a podcast from anywhere.
OUR GUEST: When our guest and I met, we discovered that he had pastored a church in the town I grew up in, many years after I had left. Steve Harling is a former pastor who has a passion for missions. He has served on international missions boards, such as with SIM. And he served as President of Reach Beyond.
Steve grew up as an MK, or missionary kid. Throughout his career as a pastor, he always led his church in making the Great Commission a priority, especially taking Christ to unreached people groups. But, despite all the doing, he has learned how to cultivate his relationship with Christ. He’s going to help us to that, too. I think you’ll be fascinated.

Listen Well, Lead Better by Steve and Becky Harling
There’s no doubt about it, our world seems dominated by fear. The war in the Ukraine has us on edge, wondering where this is leading. We see the destruction of entire cities and devastation of human lives. And our hearts go out to those people on the other side of the world.
We thought that when this year began, we might put fear behind us. Covid was on a downturn and life seemed to be coming back to normal. But other things crept in to test us:
Should we fear getting the vaccine?
Should we fear not getting the vaccine?
Gas prices have skyrocketed.
Inflation is soaring.
Mortgage rates are going up.
The supply line is messed up. We can’t get things
The world scene is getting more and more tense. Not just the current war, but the crackdown by other major powers on religious freedom, blocking the internet and cybercrime.
The news shows and channels don’t help us. They feed on fear, so they bring the most graphic images and scenarios to our living rooms and devices.
So the timing is right for our theme this month at FRESH FAITH 24/7. And that theme is COURAGE.
Our guest on this week’s show, Sandi Brown, is an example of courage, and how her courage transformed her relationship with God.
I always thought she was courageous. She’s a leader in her community, in her profession and is recognized nationally as someone who makes things happen. She took a small organization and has built it into a thriving, life-changing ministry. She’ll be the first one to tell you it was God who has done this, because she’s humble.
But while Sandi was courageous on the outside, there was something missing in her relationship with God. And she didn’t figure it out until a couple years ago. Then she went on the most courageous journey she has ever been on. You’ll hear all about it in my interview with her. Sandi Brown has been in the same field I’ve been in, for many years—Christian radio. That’s how we’ve gotten to know each other. But we hadn’t really crossed paths for a few years—until this interview.
She is also the co-author of the book, Healing Out Loud: How to Embrace God's Love When You Don't Like Yourself

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God." --2 Cor 1:3-4 (NIV)
This week, we’re talking about the delicate issue of when we lose a loved one, and how God fits into our lives.
When my mom died at her young age, it was a tough time during a cold December week in Upstate New York. As usual, it was cloudy. Snow was on the ground and it fell almost every day during our time of mourning.
The stark, gray environment contributed to the mood that filled the air for my family. We were all pained in a big way by the loss of a wonderful woman who had given herself for us.
I remember how she would squirrel away extra grocery money in one of the drawers. She would send it to me at college to help me out. You can imagine what a $20 bill in the mail meant to a college kid.
Our Guests
Jim and JeanneKay Van Houten are dear friends of ours. My wife and I met them over 20 years ago on a hot, hot day. More on that in the interview. Their son, Jeff, played baseball against our twin sons a few times and that’s how our friendship developed -- even though we lived hundreds of miles away.
Jim is a retired financial planner and Jeanne Kay had a career in education and raising their boys. Their lives were turned upside down nearly two years ago when their son, Jeff, tragically died.
I don’t know if there’s anything more painful than losing a child. I have seen this couple walk through the storm and have witnessed their heartache and pain. But I’ve also seen how their walk with God has flourished.
I wasn’t sure if I should ask them to be on the podcast, and I wasn’t sure if they wanted to. But they said “yes” because they want to help others going through a crisis like this. It was a hard interview, probably the hardest I’ve ever done. When I think of Fresh Faith in Real Life, I think of people like Jim and Jeanne Kay. I’m so grateful they came on the show to share their story and their faith journey with Christ.

Jeff Van Houten article
Corrie ten Boom once said, “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?”
Ooooh, that might hit home for many of us. We know prayer isn’t just for emergencies, but we can treat it that way. I think we all wish we could have a better prayer life. I know that I do!
On this episode, you’ll meet a guest who will open up the world of prayer to us. I could have talked with him for two hours, but I didn’t. His entire life is different because of a change he made in his prayer life. Brian Russell will pull back the curtain and share how his relationship with Christ has become more intimate, transparent and joyful. I hope we can learn something from him.
Last week, Jamie Moore talked to us about friendship with God. I think this week’s episode is a cousin to that topic. Make sure you listen to episode #18 if you haven’t already.
Billy Graham said something that ties into the Corrie Ten Boom quote: "We are to pray in times of adversity, lest we become faithless and unbelieving. We are to pray in times of prosperity, lest we become boastful and proud. We are to pray in times of danger, lest we become fearful and doubting. We are to pray in times of security, lest we become self-sufficient."
If you have a favorite prayer quote, share it with me and I’ll share it with our audience. My email address is jon@freshfaith247.com
In our Fresh Bread segment, we’ll see what the Bible has to say about prayer.
NOTE: There’s a great way to kick off your morning prayer session with God, and that’s with my FRESH BREAD FOR FRESH FAITH email devotion. Three times a week, I deliver the sweet aroma of Fresh Bread to your inbox. It’s quick, to the point, and gets you going for your day.

About Brian Russell:
Our guest is someone whose relationship with God has been transformed by approaching prayer in a different way. He’s a longtime believer who was missing something in his relationship with Jesus. As he will share, his life came crashing down over a decade ago, and exposed some devastating weaknesses. He knew Christ, but nothing compared to where he is today.
He’ll talk to us about centering prayer. He practiced it and journaled about this for years and then his journal became a book. We’ll talk about that. Something else about Brian—he’s a professor of biblical studies at Asbury Theological Seminary. And you’d think, someone who is teaching in seminary would have it all together when it comes to prayer. Well—Brian is the first to say that he was really missing something. Let’s go on his life journey together.
Centering Prayer Basics:
Schedule a time.
Choose a duration.
Create an atmosphere.
Close your eyes.
Set your intention.
Sit silently and use a Prayer Word to break your cycles of thought.
After last week’s episode on friendship with God, I received an email from Robbin. She was responding to my story about my best friend growing up. Hers was Debby, and I thought this was really cool:
“After I came to the Lord, I started sharing with her about Jesus. It finally got to a point where she told me to stop talking to her about Him because she didn't want to hear anymore. I continued to pray for her, and nine years later, when Dan and I were in Montana, I got a call from her. She wanted to find me because she heard my dad had passed away and wanted to send condolences and say how much she loved him. But the main reason she wanted to find me was to say, "You were right!" She had come to the Lord and wanted me to know. HALLELUJAH!!!”

Our guest this week has become an evangelist for a cause I think every believer needs to consider: Friendship with God.
In fact, it’s so close to his hear that he wrote a book by that title. I gabbed the book after I heard him speak and I finished it in a week. Then, I said, I need to get this guy on the podcast. My listeners need to hear his message.
In the book, writes about how to experience freedom from paralyzing fear, now to live securely in God’s love, how to walk in peace and be present with those around you, and something we dove into more—how to stay relationally connected to God as you read the Bible. We’re all guilty of reading the Bible as a textbook sometimes. But God is in the Bible.
Jamie Moore loves the theology and ministry of AW Tozer. He has a passion to help others grow in deep friendship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He’s also a pastor with a black belt! I first heard Jamie preach at his church in Cincinnati. Thank you, Stan and Pam Lincoln, for connecting me with Jamie. We had a great conversation.

The past two weeks, we had a great conversation with Dave and Jan Dravecky. They shared their difficult cancer journey and how God met them in an amazing way. These two episodes are powerful for someone going through cancer. Also, if you are wondering how you can minister to someone with cancer, listen to part 1 of that interview, two weeks ago. One of our listeners wrote to me after she heard it and said, “I loved Dave's "Be there" section. There are times I just don't know what to say to people, but that's great to hear that you just have to be there and let the person vent or just talk with them about other things that are on their hearts.”
So check out the past two episodes.
By the way, if this podcast is having an impact on your life, please hit the share button and let your friends know about FRESH FAITH IN REAL LIFE. You’ll be doing me a big favor—and your friend, too!
But wait—let’s back up and think about friendship. I’ll ask you a question, and shout out the first thought that comes to mind.
Here’s the question: Who was your best friend growing up?
Why is that? Why did that person come right to mind? For a number of reasons I’m sure. I bet you’re smiling as you replay some of the times you had together. I should have a contest for the best friendship story.
Remember, if you’d like to receive a slice of Fresh Bread from the Word of God 3 days a week, sign up for my FRESH BREAD for FRESH FAITH devotional.
Dave and Jan Dravecky return for part two of an interview on cancer and our relationship with God. In this episode, they discuss one of the biggest things cancer victims face—and that’s fear. Our guests are no different. They went through some of the darkest times and the Lord met them in an amazing way to help them face their fears.
Dave Dravecky was a successful Major League Baseball pitcher whose story gripped the sports world over three decades ago when he came down with cancer in his throwing arm. Amazingly, he recovered from his first bout and returned to the mound. But then it came back, and he had his left arm amputated.
His career came to an end, but as you heard last week, the Lord transformed Dave and Jan. They have been faithfully leading a powerful ministry called Endurance with Dave and Jan Dravecky, helping people around the world who are experiencing pain and suffering, whether it be from cancer or another illness or disease.
You'll also be nourished with Jon's Fresh Bread segment on the topic of patience, something we all need.

Cancer is devastating. Our guests in this episode know it well. Dave Dravecky was a star major league pitcher. His career was suddenly cut short by cancer at the pinnacle. He and his wife, Jan, went through the valley as they battled the physical, emotional and spiritual pain.

For more than 30 years, Dave and Jan have been providing hope and encouragement to men, women and children who are battling cancer. Their ministry, Endurance, is changing lives. They have many resources to help.

From a food survey to forgiveness, this episode is full of variety. But the main focus is on a topic most of us struggle with -- fasting. Our guest, Tim Epling, gives us hope. He shares how he has developed this habit in his life and how it has made a big difference in his relationship with Christ. According to Tim, if you want intimacy with Jesus, fasting is a must.
Don't worry, Tim doesn't overwhelm us. He talks about the realities of prayer and fasting in is life. His victories and struggles. He provides practical counsel on how we can get started.
Tim is a pioneer, entrepreneur, family man and a pastor. You'll enjoy his story of how God built prayer into his life through the influence of his parents.
Jon Fugler also shares about the life-giving power of forgiveness.

How do we make our time with God more than an item on our to-do list? It's more than something to check off when we're done. So many things are competing for our precious hours, and we know God should have our best. However, it's not always that way.
Be encouraged! Today's episode will give you solutions. Jon Fugler talks with Lonnie Berger, who shares from personal experience how we can consistently know Jesus' love and joy. He goes to the heart of the matter and helps us overcome the obstacles to a consistent, meaningful quiet time.
When our relationship with God is stalled, Lonnie has some ideas on how to get it going again. He opens up about his own life and the ways he recaptures his intimacy with Jesus.
