This week on the Mindful Miri Podcast - Diandra Ford-Wing, in her words:

"Driven by a deep passion for the art of storytelling, I thrive on creating narratives that both entertain and provoke thought. My debut novel, Red Bird, is more than just a story—it is a heartfelt love letter to my mother and Aunt Audrey, a tribute to their strength, wisdom, and the impact they’ve had on my life. Through this novel, I hope to offer solace to those navigating the challenging waters of loss and grief, providing a safe haven amidst their emotional storms.

At my core, I am dedicated to writing stories that explore the complexities of the human spirit. With every word, I strive to capture the essence of what it means to be human, from our deepest joys to our most painful struggles. As I continue on my journey as a writer, I invite you to join me in discovering powerful narratives that not only entertain but also leave a lasting imprint on the world—both in literature and in life."

What happens when you land your dream job and it feels more like a battlefield than a classroom?

Kindergarten teacher Gina Venancio knows that feeling all too well. After years of struggling to manage her classroom, a heart-to-heart with her teaching partner gave her the wake-up call she needed to take control.

Gina embarked on a journey of researching classroom management and student behavior, learning that effective control doesn't rely on threats or bribes but a sustainable approach tailored to each student.

Gina’s teaching journey didn't stop with mastering classroom management. She had to learn how to balance her roles as a teacher, a coach for other educators, and maintain her personal life. Gina shares how she sets boundaries, lets go of perfectionism, and manages her time intentionally. Trust us, you won't want to miss her thoughts on the art of ‘doing nothing’ and how strategic rest periods can boost your productivity and well-being.

But a teacher's life isn't just about classroom management and work-life balance. Gina and I dive into the challenges of the teaching profession, from the often frustrating reality of micromanagement to the vital role of student advocacy. She passionately speaks about the need for teacher autonomy and the importance of having a team approach to avoid feeling isolated.

Gina has some great tips on how to access resources online without breaking the bank. And, for those considering leaving the profession, she offers some valuable advice and a heartfelt reminder of why you started teaching in the first place. When I first started the Mindful Miri podcast, I set out to explore being a woman, having a body, and healing our relationship to our bodies.

As I worked with clients individually, I noticed that those who came to me for body issues often had overall difficulty taking great care of themselves. And most of the requests and feedback I was getting came from educators and caregivers. Plus, teachers were coming to me for support during my day job, which inspired me to start focusing on supporting educators and preventing teacher burnout.

Which led me to creating a nonprofit called The Association for the Wellbeing of Educators (AWE). I thought about starting a podcast just for educators, but I think that all of us need to learn how to take better care of ourselves and I’m still curious about a lot of things outside of the education realm, including science, technology, psychology, art, social justice and DEI, spirituality, fitness, leadership, and personal development.

All that being said, I’m back with a new season of great stories of women who are overcoming adversity, fostering resilience, making an impact (even the tiniest), and celebrating this thing called life from across the globe.

Please send feedback to me and miri@mindfulmiri.com or DM on Instagram @mindful_miri

As always, stay light, healthy, confident, and free..
And may you be safe, healthy, happy, peaceful, and loved,

Miri xo

What would you tell your younger self?

This question always seems to strike a chord with my guests and give them pause.

Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have a cool, wise older woman sherpa you through your career, motherhood, and womanhood instead of floundering alone?
Tyler Skinner is taking the "younger self" question to the next level withThe Next Wave: Evoke the Leader Within 2023.
Tyler Skinner is the Founder of @women.making.waves and Connected Communities. She is also the host of the Mishaps, Magic, & Mayhem Podcast.

Tyler is here to make a difference by building a community of passionate highly charged women together to make the biggest waves they can in every aspect of their lives along with uplifting and supporting other women seeking the same.

In this episode, we talk about her newest venture:
The Next Wave experience was created because we got really sick & tired of hearing powerful, smart, driven women say they don’t feel supported, let alone feel like they’re actually seen.

Peggy Olson said, “if you don’t like the conversation, change it.

It's for college-age women (18-25) to be mentored by mentors who are making waves in their own right. I'm (Miri) going to be a mentor!
It’s time to start a conversation around how we show up as women and retain our feminine power while leading entire companies, movements, and passion projects to success.

Evoke the Leader Within 2023 is designed to help you break into the conversation and share your ideas for innovation.

It’s time to share your vision.

It’s time to get innovative and speak up.

It’s time to face challenges head-on and have your voice heard.

In this episode, we discuss how Paden Hughes went from a life of constant hustle and high ambition to finally listening to her body protesting it all.

We talk with the Author/CEO about how to get back up after burning yourself out, how to navigate being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), and managing it all while being a mom and a CEO. We also talk about her amazing book, Take Two, in which she chronicles her journey by resolving to take 2 hours per day to tune back in to herself.

About Paden Hughes:

Paden Hughes is a founder, speaker, podcaster, and author who is a leader in the areas of professional development, entrepreneurship, and health.

She was born and raised in California. She's a wife and a mom who is obsessed with defining success on her own terms and coaching others on how to buy back their time and experience with true freedom.

Paden Hughes believed that if she hustled more and more every day, her kids would be happier, her company bigger, her husband prouder, and her life simply perfect. Work hard, play hard, right?

Well, she did it! She was a respected business consultant: growing dozens of companies from six figures to seven and eight figures. She was a highly rated leadership trainer and speaker at Fortune 500 companies and grew her first business to 7-figures. A highly anxious, people-pleaser with no work boundaries, just blinded by her ambition to chase badge of honor after badge of honor so she could finally feel “good enough.”

Then she became a mom (twice over) and depletion heaped on top of her teetering health. Enter 2020 and the pandemic that shuttered her “non essential” business.

She headed to Sedona on a week long “soul adventure” and walked away with the marching orders to spend two hours a day alone, just learning to relax and reconnect with her intuition and needs. She carved that time out of her work hours so it wouldn’t impact her family. Just worked 10 less hours per week. Imagine setting that kind of boundary in your life?

She gave it a three week trial and managed to do 21 days in a row. Shocked by how many things improved in her life, she kept going. That simple daily habit improved her health, wealth and happiness so dramatically that wrote a book about it. And now that journey is helping other ambitious women shift their lives too.

This week on the Mindful Miri Podcast, we learn about Holly Beals, mixed media painter, wife, and boy mama of two.

We talk about self-expression through art, motherhood, being a woman, and having faith in a higher power.

Subscribe and listen to the Mindful Miri Podcast wherever you get your podcasts or here: Mindful Miri Podcast (buzzsprout.com).

About Holly:
After graduating from Chico State with a BA in communications, she worked as a graphic designer for six years. But new adventures were calling and she was blessed with the opportunity to teach conversational English to college students in Tibet. It was there, one day in her tiny apartment, where she gathered up what I had on hand: scrap paper, Mod Podge and acrylic paint. She was trying to make it through an emotionally-challenging season and what emerged on canvas from that struggle was beautiful and satisfying. So began her love for mixed media painting.

Now, in the midst of yet another great adventure, being a mother to two young boys, she continues my love for mixed media painting and cherish time in the art studio. She mainly works with acrylics and handmade or scrap paper on wood panel. Texture, layering, unexpected color combinations and capturing the people/places around her are all reoccurring curiosities.

Some things she'll never stop believing: “Life has meaning, each person is significant, and The One who made all things is beautiful beyond comprehension.”

This week, we talk about how the outside makes the inside better, naming it to tame and claim it, challenging your inner critic, implant removal, and raising kids that have a healthy self-image with Jeanne Gallagher.

Jeanne Gallagher is an Investment Adviser Representative and Registered Representative with GWN Securities Inc.

Seaside Solutions: The terms "learning" and "teaching" are interchangeable. My responsibility is to learn about you, our client. Together, we will delve into your goals and dreams and determine your personalized financial path. Your responsibility is to teach me about you. Through this process, we will pause when necessary to discuss financial concepts, building the foundation of Financial Wellness.

Discover Rising Tides: Being outside is very important to me. There are many ways to be outside. It can be as simple as sitting in the grass on a warm summer day. Walking barefoot in the grass or on the beach, feeling the sand between your toes. Other times, it is important to be challenged. A heart-pounding, sweaty hike or a paddle “into the wind”. Something to clear the thoughts and cobwebs of the mind.

Being a solopreneur, allotting time to be outside can be downright hard. Thoughts creep on “If I am not working, no one is working”. She knows there are others out there experiencing the same thing. She feels the need to talk to them, to support them, to acknowledge them, to learn from them. She feels we can all support, acknowledge and learn from each other. That's how the Discover Rising Tides Podcast was born.

This week, I talk with Mariah Eaves about Saran wrapping her thighs in 6th grade, interrupting negative thought patterns, and revolutionizing self-love for herself and others via boudoir photography.

Mariah Eaves is a lifelong local to the Central Coast of California. Her smile is contagious, you'll see! She spent many years in the hospitality and banking industry before starting her first business, The Locked Inn (the Central Coast's first escape room), with her husband, Patrick, shortly after they married in 2014.

They opened Bare Heart Boudoir in Feb 2020. Bare Heart Boudoir is more than just sexy photos (although you do get plenty of those). It’s an experience and a transformation into seeing yourself in a new light and truly learning to love your body. She and Patrick help women and couples step away from the negative feelings towards their bodies and plant firm roots of self-love and acceptance.

Follow Mariah on Instagram @bareheartboudoir
You can learn more about Mariah at: www.bareheartboudoir.com
Join the Facebook ladies only VIP group.

A note from Miri: If you have not had a boudoir experience, it is a MUST for EVERY WOMAN! I guarantee it will transform the way you look at yourself.
You will go in scared to death, but emerge a sultry siren.
Give yourself (or your woman) the gift of Boudoir this X-makkah or Birthday!

This is part 2 of 2 (check out the previous episode for Part 1 with the amazing Elizabeth Sneed!)

This week, we talk size-exclusion as social justice, expanding what you think is possible for yourself, and surfing in Nicaragua this April!

The Curvy Surfer Girl is Elizabeth Sneed. The Curvy Surfer Girl Movement is dedicated to reimagining the last 63 years of exclusive history in women's surfing. Hawaiian surfer, Elizabeth Sneed recognized the need for women to have a community dedicated to surfing that was representative of modern and diverse women athletes.

Elizabeth's personal journey of accepting herself as a plus-size athlete over the last 3.5 years was the catalyst that launched the movement. In the summer of 2020, Elizabeth partnered with a world-class surf photographer of Oahu's South Shore to launch some of the first images of a plus-size female surfer via Instagram.

Curvy Surfer Girl continued to grow as a movement and community through Instagram amassing 24,000 women in nine months, a resounding indication by women worldwide for more and better representation in women's surfing.

This week on the Mindful Miri Podcast, we talk body love, gender identity, being "too buff," privilege, and the importance of mindset with Dr. Johanna B. Moore.

Dr. Johanna B. Moore is a triple board certified physician, respected medical director of multiple laboratories, and mother of twins, who found herself overwhelmed instead of fulfilled by the life that she worked so hard to achieve. She realized that success wasn't what she thought it would be, so she set on a journey to find a life that truly fulfills.

Now, Johanna lives her own true version of success, defined by fulfillment in what she chooses to do now and a deep passion for her vision of the future. Now she shares her success strategy through She is Money and its membership, the So Money Society, where she teaches and coaches high achieving women so that they can thrive instead of feeling chained to their achievements.

The So Money Society is the place where intelligent, ambitious women ditch distraction, disappointment and overwhelm to create overall success that feels just right, with your profession, finances, body, mind and tribe.

McKenna Musser is 23 years old and will be serving as a Peace Corps agriculture volunteer in the Republic of The Gambia, West Africa.

This past summer, she rode her bike from the top of Oregon to Santa Monica SOLO. Prior to this adventure, she taught 6th grade science in her hometown of Grants Pass, OR. Teaching taught her many valuable lessons, one being that her heart is happiest when her hands are in the dirt and she is out in nature.

Before teaching, she worked on a small, organic farm in the town where she graduated from Linfield University with a BS in Environmental Sciences and Biology. She loves doing anything outside and finds great value in having meaningful conversations with friends, family, and strangers (including Miriam)!

You can follow McKenna's adventures on Instagram @mckennamusser Learn more about the book she referenced: To Shake the Sleeping Self by Jedidiah Jenkins Learn more about the Peacecorps**.

This week, my guest is Jessica Ammons, Wise-Beyond-Her-Years Wife, Mother, Alopecia Survivor.
We talk shaving heads and transcending vanity.

Listen now and subscribe so you'll never miss a new episode!

Jessica Ammons is a native North Carolinian who currently resides in Crozet VA. She spent 13 years in corporate sales after Appalachian State University. Recognizing the need to be more available to her two young sons and their active family life, she scaled back to part time employment in the construction industry, learning the tricks of the trades in yet another male-driven industry.

September happens to be Alopecia Awareness Month, which Jessica holds near and dear to her heart. Some alopecia patients might say they have suffered from the disorder, but Jessica refers specifically to surviving Alopecia Areata (AA) for the past 37 years of her life. Diagnosed when she was seven years old, Jessica has tried almost every treatment available for AA, none of which have proven as successful as her latest journey through a clinical trial of the recently FDA approved drug (Baricitinib).

Alopecia Areata is a common autoimmune skin disease, causing hair loss and affecting 6.8 million people in the U.S. (NAAF, 2022).

In this episode: boudoir badass photography, how restrictive diets make you crazy, how positive self-talk is contagious, how slender women are not immune to societal pressure, what it means to be a woman, and honoring your body's signals.

Melissa Guerra is a wedding, portrait, branding, and boudoir photographer in California. She lives in Bradley, CA with her husband (Mario), dog (Sam), their deaf and vision-impaired mini Aussie (Cava) and German Shepherd rescue (Chief)! They love to travel, home renovation, and watching sunsets together.

Melissa launched Melissa Jean Photography in 2009 out of a passion for photography and people. Growing up as 1 of 6 kids, there was a lot of documenting happening and now, watching her siblings with their own families, she loves capturing those moments - big and small.

Melissa has been my photographer since 2013 when she did a newborn photo shoot for my son. I felt instantly at ease with her. She is sunshine and champagne in a human, with a camera to boot! Since 2013, she's the only one I've trusted with a yoga fitness shoot, branding photography, and - most recently and as a result of this podcast episode - a fiery boudoir session where I felt like a GODDESS and a POWERHOUSE! Every woman, of every shape and size needs to give herself the gift of a boudoir photo shoot!
