Let's be real—being in the business world is no joke. You work your butt off so that you can take care of yourself (and your loved ones), but the "me time" comes harder and harder to come by. And yet somehow, the habits of the most successful business people include things like meditation, ongoing education, reading, exercise, and getting enough sleep. So where the heck do they find the time to have their cake and eat it too (plus bake it, market it, and sell it)?
Well, every other week on "Unstrictly Business," you'll get access to behind-the-scenes interviews with successful business owners as they share how they manage to do it all. You'll learn things like how they optimize their schedules, gain back lost time with breaks that boost productivity and motivation, and increase creativity by exploring personal passions.
You’ll also hear tons of business-related advice, as well as learn how these business owners achieve better work-life balance, combat burnout, and enjoy themselves outside of work.
If you need help navigating the business world without the burnout, sit down with us as these successful business owners share how they've grown their business. Plus, occasionally your host, Calli Zarpas, will also be sharing some extra resources like meditation and guided breathwork sessions so that you can begin taking better care of yourself right from our podcast.

This week’s guest is Julia Kay, the co-founder of Great Wrap an Australian made and owned compostable stretch wrap company based in Melbourne, and this year they’re on a mission to remove 8,910,000 tonnes of plastic stretch wrap sent to America's landfills each year.
And what’s really cool for all my American listeners is that they are launching in the United States this summer. Julia and her partner Jordy launched Great Wrap in 2020 after they noticed the excessive amount of plastic stretch wrap that was heading straight to landfill each year. Jordy, a former winemaker and Julia, a former architect knew they needed to find a solution.
Personally, I’ve struggled to find a perfect saran wrap/cling wrap solution for my home so I was really excited to learn more. But where Julia and Jordy are really reducing the amount of plastic that goes into landfills is by decreasing the amount of plastic wrap used in shipping. Incredibly, they found a way to turn potato scraps into their stretch wrap that won’t put any more microplastics out into the environment.
In this episode you’ll learn how Julia and Jordy the issue of plastic waste and actually turned it into a solution and a business and what they’ve learned along the way (from the good and the bad!).
Plus, you’ll discover what they’ve learned from working with investors and the most powerful investments they’ve made in their business.
In this episode, you'll discover…
How Julia’s previous careers steered her towards Great Wrap
Why they’ve chosen to tackle plastic and food waste
Great Wrap and their 10 year vision of a world without plastic
Why they’ve chosen to the United States as the first international country

Sleep is one of the most important things your body needs. And unfortunately, business owners and business people in general tend to be chronically deprived of the stuff. Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation also known as “yogic sleep” or “effortless relaxation.”
The great thing about this yogic sleep is that it will provide a deep rest and relaxation that you won’t find in a lot of other practices. And if you don’t consider yourself a yogi, don’t worry. Yoga nidra usually only requires only one (or a couple) of really simple poses. This practice focuses mostly on meditation and bringing your body to a state of relaxation.
This 15-minute yoga nidra session can just be done laying down on a yoga mat or even just in bed. It’s a great option to listen to before you fall asleep tonight!
Guided by Jess from Yoga with Jess who is a certified yoga teacher with a specialist in women’s health and hormones. She has trained with yoga medicine and hopes to be able to bring balance to those who attend her classes. Based in New Zealand, she is the owned of My Little Yoga Place and offers virtual group classes and 1:1 sessions.

When Sophia started getting acne in her teens she had no idea it would lead her to where she is today. She now runs SANA Skin, a successful skincare line that has helped hundreds of people clear their skin. In fact, despite Sophia always having an interest in holistic health and clearing her skin, she tried a few different paths before arriving at business owning. She went to esthetician school before deciding being an esthetician wasn’t for her and then tried freelance writing. And finally after managing to clear her own skin through well-researched internal and external adjustments, Sophia finally thought she wanted to create a course around helping other people clear their skin.
But, that was before she heard a voice clear as day tell her it wasn’t about the course, but instead about the face oil she’d made to accompany the course. So not only did Sophia dive into that face oil that ended up becoming a best-seller and the start to her 6-product line, but also really helped Sophia focus on where the divine was guiding her.

When Steph Hon started Cadence, it was born out of her own need for more sustainable and better designed travel containers. Steph’s specific story began on one of her climbing trips, where she not only struggled to fit her curated skincare routine into those little plastic travel containers we all know (and likely dislike), but also struggled to fit the poorly designed, disposable containers into a lifestyle where she valued things like sustainability, individuality, and top-notch design.
Eventually, Steph and her team went on to test over 200 prototypes before making the first magnetic and refillable travel container that is completely made from recycled ocean bound plastic. The only thing was there wasn’t yet a market for the reusable travel containers she envisioned. Despite this, in a world with brands like Hydro Flask and Pyrex, we’ve made it known that there is a market for reusable, eco-conscious containers and Steph had a hunch there could be a market for Cadence.
And as it turned out, there were a lot of people who were sick of the plastic travel containers from their local drugstore and were looking for a solution they could love for life. Cadence ended up reaching profitability less than a year into business, and since their launch just two years ago has been featured in numerous publications like Forbes and the NYT, and sold to customers around the globe. Steph shares so much goodness in this episode from her career change to what it takes to be a founder on a day-to-day business, how she was able to raise over $400k from 100% angel investors, and so much more!
In this episode, you'll discover...
What Steph learned from her parents + a career in video production editing
How Steph turned a simple, yet relatable frustration into a business
Tips for getting investors for your own business
How to grow a team you can really depend on
Where Steph invests her time and energy on a day-to-day basis

In this episode, I welcomed Julie and Matt Roth. As a husband and wife team, Matt and Julie co-own one business and have founded two others together. What started off as an investment in a few magnolia trees for winter filler flowers for florists, ended up turning into their three businesses: The Magnolia Company, Seeds of Life, and Mary’s Magnolias. Their first ever business, The Magnolia Company, offers handmade magnolia-inspired goods like magnolia wreaths, garlands, and swags, as well as other naturally inspired gifts.
Seeds of Life is a gift tree company that offers trees and plants for life’s most important people and occasions, but their best sellers are their memorial trees. Finally, Mary’s Magnolias, their cosmetic company, uses their magnolia flowers and cold pressed magnolia seed oil to make soaps, lotions, and bath bombs. You’ll learn how their three companies blossomed out of their Florida based farm, which has been in Julie’s family for generations, as well as many of the business tips they’ve learned along the way.
The Magnolia Company and Seeds of Life has been featured in countless magazines like Southern Living and have even been featured on Oprah’s O list. So they share all their secrets to success and more.
In this episode, you'll discover...
How Julie and Matt started their three businesses
How they’ve grown a team with a high retention rate
What helped them get through more difficult business times
The power of giving back as a business

In this episode, I welcomed Nick Gedda to the show. Nick is an expert marketer, business owner, and author. After spending years of his life dreaming of something bigger, but never following through because the timing didn’t feel perfect or he wasn’t 100% ready, Nick dared to pursue his dreams and in a 5 month span published a book, started his own company, started a clothing line, and quit his job. While Nick technically works full time for an agency as the Cheif Marketing Officer, he actually considers it his side gig.
His real calling is working as a consultant as he helps take people from the dreaming stage to the doing stage. He then helps his clients make marketing a natural part of their business by developing marketing systems based on each client’s specific buyer’s journey. In this episode, Nick demystifies marketing terms like “systems” and “processes” and explains how any business owner can follow his marketing process using a real life example. Nick also shares about how life coaches, including his mother, have helped him get to where he is today.
In this episode, you'll discover...
What Nick learned from growing up with an entrepreneur mother + life coach
The importance of starting without being perfect
The #1 problem of most businesses coming to Nick for marketing help and how to solve it

In this episode, I had the chance to sit down with Elysse Crabtree, who is not only the founder of Wabi-Sabi Botanicals, an essential oil-free, natural skincare line, but also a business mentor and intuitive guide through her second business, Be Led By Love. Since the launch of Wabi-Sabi Botanicals almost seven years ago, Elysse has learned a lot, but one of the main things she has come to embrace, as well and share with other business owners, is the importance of restoring a balance of both masculine and feminine energies in business. If you’re not sure what this means, the masculine side of business is one we all know well, hustling for 8 hours a day, being assertive and competitive, and leaving emotions outside of business. The feminine on the other hand is open to receiving, accepting of rest, and about strong communication of values.
Today you’ll learn how Elysse went from a behavior therapist and aid to launching Wabi-Sabi Botanicals after her own skin struggles. Her intuitive business practices lead her from an inspirational Pinterest pin of an at-home skincare recipe to creating a line of products that were featured in Urban Outfitters just six months after her launch. This episode is filled with actionable advice from Elysse on how to build a business that aligns with your unique life path.
In this episode, you'll discover...
How Elysse balances the feminine and masculine in her own business
The most common setbacks her business mentees experience
What Elysse does to get in touch with her divine intuition + her daily routine
How Elysse managed her full-time job as she grew Wabi-Sabi Botanicals

Kristen is the founder of Mapped Wellness, a virtual integrative health coaching and functional medicine clinic, the co-founder of Border Free Media, a content marketing agency, as well as the co-owner of Salt & Wind Travel, a boutique travel company. Before getting certified as a health coach, Kristen used to spend about 85% of her time on the road for the work she did for both Border Free Media and Salt & Wind Travel.
While staying busy might’ve seemed great for her business, Kristen shares how a combination of certain life practices, including her work schedule, exacerbated her extreme eczema and eventually led to her developing an auto-immune disease. We learn how Kristen dealt with multiple health crises and how Kristen eventually turned her health around and began Mapped Wellness. IIn today's episode, we meet Leah Gardner, the founder of Leah Gardner Art. Leah is known for her vibrant, nostalgic and whimsical scenes which she mostly creates using oils and for her incredible ability to play with light and creating stunning still lifes. We start out by talking a little bit about Leah’s interest in art from a young age and her not-so-direct path to becoming an artist. Originally in the hospitality sector, Leah was let go at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to pick up her art “hobby,” which she had originally only used when creating Christmas gifts for friends and family.
A little over a year later and Leah has garnered over 50k followers on Instagram, a constant stream of sales and commissions, and a career she loves even more than her career in hospitality. We also chat a little about work-life balance as before this past month, Leah had been painting every day. And while it was great for her painting skills, it wasn’t so great for combatting common entrepreneur bumps in the road like burnout. Finally, Leah shares a behind-the-scenes look at how she grew Leah Gardner Art to where it is today and the importance of a good ol’ break.
In this episode, you'll discover...
Why persistence is the key to Instagram growth
The benefits of regularly scheduled breaks
How there is no “right” path to business owning

In today's episode, Calli will take you through the power of pausing! In our business world, we’re often taught to put our work above ourselves and to work, work, work, until we can’t any longer. (Anyone listened to 9-5 by Dolly Parton recently?). Well, taking breaks throughout the day can actually help you work better and get more done by working less.
In this episode you’ll learn why breaks are important, how to work them into your day, how to actually take productive breaks, and how to actually make a habit of taking daily breaks. Calli has been studying productivity and motivation for years ever since she struggled with productivity as a business owner and was surprised to learn she could actually get more work done by working less if she just worked right.
You’ll learn all about the pomodoro method, something called the Ultradian rhythm, and some of the most productive ways to take a break during your work day like meditation, breathwork and just a good, old nap.

In today's episode, Calli will take you through a Loving-Kindness meditation. Practicing kindness is one of the most direct routes to happiness and research suggests that kind people tend to be more satisfied with their relationships and with their lives in general.
Loving-kindness meditation is a great way to cultivate our natural capacity for kindness. It involves mentally sending goodwill, kindness, and warmth towards others and yourself by silently repeating a series of mantras. Studies show that when people practice loving-kindness meditation regularly, they start automatically reacting more positively to others—and their social interactions and close relationships become more satisfying. Loving-kindness meditation can also reduce people’s focus on themselves—which can, in turn, lower symptoms of anxiety and depression.
I hope this meditation helps you take a little time for yourself as the workweek begins. Enjoy!

Having spent her childhood summers near the Mediterranean, where aperitivo is a way of life, Melanie shares how her grandmother would make big jugs of limoncello each summer. So, after deciding to reduce her alcohol intake, Melanie realized there weren’t a lot of great bitter alcohol alternatives out there that embodied the same feeling as her summer nights in the Mediterranean. With funding help from founders of both Away and Sweet Leaf, design help from Willo Perron & Associates, known for their work for icons like Rihanna and Kanye West, plus a whole lot of hard work, Melanie created Ghia. This week, you’ll learn more about her journey to being a business owner and how she plans to grow Ghia in the future.
