In this episode Coach Cathcart discusses having realistic expectations for players and parents who are trying to get ready for high school tryouts. High school baseball, (and most sports) is not something you can prepare for in a month, 3 months, 6 months, etc. If you are new to the sport or have taken a significant amount of time away from baseball leading up to high school tryouts, it is an almost impossible task to fully prepare for. Even if the player is athletic and works hard, the amount of mental fortitude the game requires is generally a mountain too high to climb in a short time. Be realistic with yourself, the competition and your preparation!

In this episode Coach Cathcart discusses how to tell players and parents it may be time to hang up the spikes and focus on life outside of baseball. This is a very difficult decisions for all parties involved and runs the gamut of emotions.

There are certain "things" that coaches, parents, and players should look into to tell if a player has what it takes to play at the college level. How are they competing with their peers? What are their physical attributes? How is their work ethic? Where are their priorities?

Be honest with yourself as a player! Don't look through rose colored glasses as a parent, and always be truthful with your players as a coach!

In this episode Coach Cathcart hits on the topic of helicopter parents. We all know them when we see them, but what effect is it really having on their child's performance? How can they be involved, but not overly present?

Parents should be a support system that provides only positive vibes. Far too many times they end up being a hinder to their child's success instead of a reason for success!

In this episode Coach Cathcart hits on the topic of arm care and the increase in serious arm injuries at an early age. The lack of common sense by coaches, parents, and players (depending on age) is a major contributor to these injuries.

Other factors include: lack of arm care routines, proper rest, and strengthening.

In this next episode Coach Cathcart discusses his thoughts on today's baseball world.

There are thousands of coaches with access to players around the world because of the internet and with this access comes tremendous opportunities for spreading knowledge, new ideas, love of the game, etc. However, that is not always the case because there is a portion of the "coaching" population online who just hate on other coaches, their ideas, their coaching methods, etc. On the flip side, there is the other portion who is supportive, gives their own insights, collaborates with others, and spreads positivity. Check out the recent episode and let us know your thoughts!

In this next episode Coach Cathcart discusses the physical and emotional work that goes into being a high-level ball player. Whether it's 8u, high school varsity level, or college level, there's different sacrifices and different amounts of work that must be put in. After 20 years of coaching, we're seeing a rise in kids playing but a fall in the amount of kids who are actually there for their love of the game, especially in youth levels. Parents individualize training, showcases, and tournaments every weekend has created undue pressure on these young kids. Before they ever get a chance to truly fall in love with the game, the expectations are unrealistic.

Very few players love and understand the grind of what it takes to be elite. Many think that if they go to certain showcases, play in bigger tournaments, or on certain teams, they will be handed scholarships. This is a false narrative. There is no shortcut.
