What's the connection between space and memory? Dr. Oliver Baumann has spent some time studying the intricate relationship between space and psychology, including memory.
Doing so led him to an interest in the effect of space on creativity, wellbeing and productivity.
In research just published, a clear link has been established between the shape of a workspace and the creativity that people can experience there. Round rooms make people more creative.
Utilising innovative methods like virtual reality (VR), he and his colleague systematically investigated how the shape of spaces influences subjective well-being, creative output, and physiological arousal. His findings reveal that rounded environments have the potential to foster collaboration and stimulate innovative thinking.
Practical applications of Dr. Baumann's insights extend to modern office settings, where round rooms serve as dedicated hubs for problem-solving and creative endeavours.
If you're a leader in an organisation striving to optimise your workspace, this conversation with Dr. Oliver Baumann promises to be both enlightening and transformative.

Is it possible to redefine the concept of a workplace and build a more genuine, people-centred environment?

I had a refreshing conversation with Ben Whitehouse recently. Ben is the Chief Workplace and Sustainability Officer at the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand - this is the large regulatory body ensuring the smooth running of New Zealand’s aviation industry. No small task.

Ben is also a long-distance commuter (travelling two hours each way) and a lover of steak and cheese pies. But for this conversation, we focused on his role as a decision-maker leading workplace transformation.

Ben emphasised the importance of authentic leadership, as well as the connection between leadership and culture in building a desirable workplace.

At CAA the workplace is defined to include various locations such as offices and vehicles. They need to understand the needs of employees, and animals in their work, meaning that Ben's take on the workplace is rather innovative.

We talked about the tension between efficiency and experience - Ben sees this tension as an asset.

Ben's view on continual learning and data-driven decisions is that it is central to creating a great workplace: “If you think you're going to get it right, it's probably not going to be right. It's actually okay to try things… It's okay to push the technology and push the environment.”

I asked Ben whether there are any myths in how leaders see the workplace today - does he see any areas where people have blinkers on? He talked about working from home - I'll let you tune in to find out more.

Ben's concluding thoughts served as an inspiration to think big, push boundaries, and be unafraid to try new things in the modern workplace.

You'll be inspired by this one.

In the latest episode of the Workplace Makers podcast, we talk with John Baldoni, a distinguished luminary in the field of leadership and management.

Working with leaders during and pre- the hybrid world of work, John has come to see the need for 'grace,' especially in times of crisis. Grace is intentional acts of kindness, distinct from mere empathy or compassion. We talk about the difference this makes to a harmonious work environment and effective leadership.

It won't surprise you that we discuss community and belonging. John refers to these as a basic need, particularly when people are working in a hybrid workplace model.

John’s view is that the future of work will lean heavily on flexible, hybrid models. But he cites a word of warning, borrowing from Cali Williamson Yost, that one size does not fit all in workplace environments.

Given that hybrid creates complexities we’re not particularly used to dealing with, I particularly wanted to pick John’s brains on how leaders can collectively make sometimes unpopular decisions. He emphasised mutual respect and open communication.

If you're looking to get a further understanding of leadership in the hybrid working age, you'll find this a jaunt through some familiar concepts, with fresh insight.

Online meetings, love them or hate them, have a central role in building cultures where engagement is at the heart. I've noticed a much greater focus on the details of excellent execution in online meeting facilitation.

On this podcast episode I had an illuminating conversation with Heather Levitt Martinez, change management expert and founder of TechHost Academy, about how to make these online meetings successful.

With Heather's unique insights as a visual practitioner-turned-online sessions specialist, it was great to dig into the core issues faced during virtual meetings. Heather talked about what distinguishes an approach that fosters engagement and productivity, and one that creates a 'fail' on these counts. Tactics included breaking groups into smaller units and giving quieter members a voice.

Heather outlined the pivotal role of a TechHost in ensuring smooth and inclusive meetings, from managing technology to facilitating diverse contributions.

We also dug into the tangible aspects of tech hosting - which platform is her favourite?

Heather underscored the significance of a strong organisational culture for creating the best meetings. Also the impact of leaders modelling the behaviours they wish to see.

You'll enjoy this episode if you're a leader trying to get your head around online meetings.

I had the pleasure of discussing the evolving role of Facilities Management (FM) with Nathan McLean, an industry leader in Workplace Experience since his key role at Xero.

Nathan outlined a clear vision for a customer-centric approach to the workplace – FM has now grown beyond maintenance of buildings and utilities; it is now about nurturing a fulfilling workplace environment that can boost productivity and overall satisfaction.

We talked about how this works and what FM’ers can be doing:

  • Collecting qualitative data through direct conversations and observations
  • Gathering quantitative data through technology and sensors
  • Ensuring effective communication and information dissemination

I am always fascinated by how people get interested in workplaces, and Nathan shared that he was profoundly influenced by his former colleagues, particularly one of his early managers.

We ducked into the realm of leadership and personal development to find out which thought leaders he would recommend and you’ll find his recommendations below.

Lastly, you might think that FM is operational mainly, but Nathan highlighted the necessity of clarity in an organisation’s workplace strategy for FM to be able to deliver in this environment.

Nathan brings a future-focused vision for facilities management, underpinned by a strong customer-centric ethos and a keen understanding of the dynamic nature of the workplace environment.

You’ll enjoy this conversation if you are considering whether FM is the right area to be supporting your workplace strategy.

Is it possible to support neurodiverse people successfully in the workplace?

I spoke with Michelle Kershaw, independent and neurodiverse consultant and Culture Lead at Kiwibank, about what it's like to be neurodiverse and how workplaces can do better at making the workplace an attractive proposition for anyone neurodiverse, given10% of the workforce is neurodiverse.

In my experience, managing for the 'edges' takes care of a lot of use cases for the 'mainstream' or the 'middle', and ultimately results in a much happier cohort of building occupants. So it was a great treat to delve into Michelle's perspective and learn from her insights.

Michelle and I discussed the challenges faced by neurodiverse individuals in the workplace, including issues with noise and distractions. We talked about how flexible workspaces and quiet areas can benefit everyone, not just those who are neurodiverse.

Michelle suggested the use of individual booths and soundproof seating areas as well as lockers.

We discussed technology tools that could better support people, people and culture strategies and Michelle's collaboration with Remarkable Minds and CCS Corporation to create an effective way for people to communicate using image cards.

Any organisation that supports visual learning, rather than '300 page manuals' is miles ahead in attracting and retaining these star players, who bring their own incredible superpowers.

What's it like to be the CEO of a US$1.4 billion company? In this episode, we get a sneak peek. Shishir Mehrotra is the Co-CEO of Coda and a former Vice President at YouTube. He also sits on the board of Spotify. When we think about what companies like these create, we are focused on their products and services. However Shishir is focused on something else as well -  another product, equally vital - the workplace experience created for his employees. Shishir has an interesting focus on the concept of 'rituals' in building a strong corporate culture. During the early days of the pandemic, he conducted a virtual dinner with leaders from notable tech firms like Slack, Pinterest, and Snowflake. The discussion aimed to understand and share the various rituals these leaders practised in their teams. What unfolded were three key revelations. We dig into these and understand why Shishir finds rituals so important. It's clear that to him, building a strong workplace experience isn't just about providing perks or creating a pleasant environment. It's about fostering a sense of community and shared experience, which is where the idea of rituals comes into play. I took the chance to pick Shishir's brains on the role of AI, since Coda has its own AI solutions. We also talked about the evolution of work towards being distributed, and how we can make sense of that by looking back at where humankind has come from. Shishir's insights are powerful for leaders of modern workplaces today. - Nina—Resources:—• Coda>> https://coda.io• Bing Gordon >> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_Gordon• Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind - Yuval Noah Harari >> https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23692271-sapiens• Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania >> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngorongoro_Conservation_Area#Ngorongoro_Crater• Dory and Pulse >> https://coda.io/@shishir/masters-of-scale-rituals/dory-and-pulse-2• The HIPPO Effect >> https://t2informatik.de/en/smartpedia/hippo-effect/• Coda AI >> https://coda.io/product/ai-alpha• ChatGPT >> https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt• Anjuli Mehrotra >> https://www.pinterest.nz/anjulimehrotra/• Join Shishir on his book writing journey by joining the Rituals of Great Teams Brains Trust >> https://coda.io/@shishir/join-the-rituals-of-great-teams-braintrust—Workplace Makers is hosted and produced by Nina Fountain and team. Vanessa Tanicien is an expert in cross-functional collaboration and strategy. She has facilitated 1000+ workshops, events,  team-building activities, and strategy sessions for executives and teams.

When I first heard Vanessa speak, I was impressed with her ability to distill some of the core challenges of hybrid communication into bite-size concepts we can work with.

Vanessa had a bunch of practical insights for leaders, including these two key concepts:

Deblurring - how to remove confusion so that you and your team can stay aligned Email crafting for negativity bias - how to manage emails for the best outcome, once you're aware of how they come across

Leaders are potentially too drained and stressed to pay attention to these challenges and shape a positive response to hybrid work. Focusing on the right measures - lead measures vs. lag measures, can often yield better results for teams, and thereby reduce stress.

This episode is bound to interest you if you're looking to get a handle on the internal experience of communication in a hybrid world, and how that could be limiting the effectiveness of your leadership style at this time.

Most leaders of hybrid workplaces don't realise the inefficiencies created by hybrid, which are the reason project timelines stretch out, teams become siloed and frustration levels climb. Neil Calvert takes a fantastically useful approach to helping organisations change their systems and processes, including the way hybrid teams communicate and manage their information.

I thoroughly enjoyed having Neil on the podcast. He's a passionate advocate for more efficient ways of working, who didn't stop at seeing this huge need in organisations and businesses but co-created a tool that would help modern workplaces to deliver these efficiencies.

I stepped into the hot seat for this podcast to address an issue that many workplace leaders are living, day to day, week to week, and endless month after endless month at the moment. The trudgery of far too many meetings.

It seems important to do better for ourselves and our teams. We've heard it said, "You've only got one back". We've also only got one body, one life and one job.

I don't consider it OK that leaders and teams keep dragging themselves through the mud with meeting after meeting after endless meeting. We can do better.

And in fact, when we do better, incredible things happen. I share research in this podcast that is nothing short of incredible. You could achieve amazing things for your team by reducing the number of meetings they have.

In this episode I give a lot of detail about where to look to make improvements, and how to get started. Enjoy.

Managing a workplace these days can be downright confusing. Hybrid requires a delicate balance between needs and wants at three levels - the organisation, the team and the individual. Perhaps the most complex is the individual. Anyone who has had trouble understanding their partner knows how complex people can be.

Jessica Hall is the creator and Head of worksona™️, a workplace personas tool. She is uniquely positioned to talk to the potential for a more robust understanding of workplace behaviour.

I thoroughly enjoyed finding out why worksona™️ is the tool of choice for employers wanting to create a positive hybrid Workplace Experience.

I was curious to talk with Simon Lloyd-Evans to understand technology for hybrid workplaces through the eyes of a CIO. Simon is an experienced CIO, with over 30 years in IT and half of that as a CIO.

Despite what you might think, the CIO role is not mainly about technology. Simon explains how he teaches CIOs in training to think about the role, and the core skills they need to develop to be successful in the role.

Simon shares how technology in the workplace is evolving, from a CIO’s perspective - in terms of where companies are now investing and the problems they’re now solving.

We hear when technology is not a solution, and where companies should apply more rigour to arrive at real workplace technology solutions. We discuss the impact of technology on the engagement and commitment of key staff.

We discover that Simon has a unique talent linked with his engineering background.
