I would like to share what it was my recital to get my bachelor's degree in music. This happened a month ago and it was a big challenge for me prepare to such a big event.
This was the first piece I played, a sonata from the Barroque era I felt pretty confortable with. I feel it was a great desition start from here because feeling nervous is always something is there when I play and even more in an important moment for me like this one where I had a jury and the university's authourities watching and hearing everything I said and played.
In the beggining I was a bit nervous but after a minute or so I just felt in love with the sound of the piano and the great comunication we were having so my stress stayed behind and I started focusing and enjoying the beauty of this amazing piece.
Hope you like it !

This is one of my favorite studies so far. It is deeply expressive which demands from the performer a certain sensitivity to those little details. The first part is "a guisa di barcarola" which means that it should be played like a barcarola, a genre sung by Viennese gondoliers hundreds of years ago. There are a couple of famous works by Brahms and Offenbach that use this genre as inspiration.
What I found funny when editing it was that I first took care of the audio, when I was listening to it I hated how the breaths sounded so I decided to remove them completely. After that, I set out to edit the video and when I put audio and video together, I realized how funny it looked when I opened my mouth to breathe and absolute silence occurred. I didn't remove it, I would say that to learn and remember my mistake every time I saw this video, but the truth is that I got lazy. It remains as an anecdote and I hope it amuses you but does not distract you from listening to such a beautiful study.

Musical notation is in constant progress and it is very difficult to clearly define how ornamentation was executed in times when recordings did not yet exist. However, musicologists come to the rescue and try to save us by making use of other historiographic sources ranging from treatises of the time to love letters from composers to their beloved intercepted by time and human curiosity. As far as the bordatura and acacciaturi are concerned, it is difficult to know how to play them "correctly", maybe that word has no place in this context, or maybe it does... However, there are certain conventions that have been adapted over time as there is a certain unanimity about them in the community of musicologists and performers. This is the case of the passage that my student and I are working on, it belongs to the arrangement of Mozart's Andante in C major by Theobald Boehn for flute and piano. In this opportunity we decided to take this grace note as one more eighth note at a rhythmic level and give it some emphasis since the phrase required it.
I hope you like it.

This little duo has quite a unique story. As I have told you before, I am a flute teacher, I work with students all over the world and one of them (based in Hong Kong) is a wonderful little boy who loves playing as much as playing with a football; it came to me as a kind of game idea to ask him to study this duet and then I would record and send an audio where I would be playing the second flute, this way he could play along with the audio track and make a kind of recital where both of us would perform. When I started working on the recording I couldn't avoid recording both flutes and sharing them with all of you, I still have to make a couple of tutorial videos so that not only my student but everyone who has access to this video can use those recordings as "play-along" and have a lot of fun playing this wonderful piece.

Ohh, I was so focus in the music on this one that I completely forgot to turn off the fan!! You can hear it pretty clearly when I’m breathing in and is quite annoying tbh. Even then, because these videos are about one take and then upload, I didn’t want to re-record it because that silly mistake. Hope is not that bad and you can enjoy the music.

Lovely Mozart’s music teaching. It’s incredible how powerful this music is even after centuries of being created!
in this video I am teaching a class on musical phrasing in Mozart and most of the composers of the classicism. Just as in language there is a certain accentuation, in music it also happens and it is an elemental part at the moment of its execution. The results of this class were wonderful and the student improved considerably.
What do you think about Mozart’s flute works?

I start feeling way more comfortable with this series of videos. My goal is not to create a perfect version but something more organic and real. I want you to know a bit of the thought process that happens while I’m playing and the details I have to work on. As listeners, we don't have the opportunity quite often to know what happens behind the scenes, sometimes we just see a super talented artist and we think is just that, "talent", when the truth is there is hours and hours of hard work behind each piece of content.
In my opinion, is this process what has more value, even more than the final recording, the process show us where we are and how much we grew thanks to our effors and discipline, that is what matters.
The mission of this channel is to share my knowledge with others and help people to enjoy more flute playing and improve, so please feel free to ask anything about the flute in the comments. I'll be here for all of you guys.

Greetings to all,
This is the first time in a very long time (years maybe!) that I am participating in a Hive open mic. The reason I come back is my deep desire to connect with other musicians and music lovers around the planet, to share songs and life experiences. I feel that the power of music to connect us is one of the most wonderful things there is and, using Hive as a connecting entity, it is an art that simply has no limits.

At the beginning of this etude is written the word "martellato", which means hammered in Italian. Curious thing, because this term is used almost exclusively for string instruments. Thank God I have a violinist wife whom I bothered to explain me more or less how the martellato is and, after having an idea, I proceeded to recreate that bow stroke on the flute.
It's a well-marked attack with a lot of bow speed, which I translate to a well-present tonguing with a good amount of air deployed.
It's great how many bow strokes string players have and I feel we can learn a lot from them by trying to imitate all their articulations.
As a teacher I used to use the bow as an example because is a visual one, when attacking the notes in the flute, you don't see anything, you use your tongue, your air column but anyhthing you can see so, it is very important have a image can help you to achieve that articulation you are looking for. With the bow, you can talk about speed, region, pressure and it just work compare it to the flute tonguing!
Did you know what martellato means? Do you know of any other bow strokes that apply to the flute? Let me know in the comments box below.

I've really enjoyed making this kind of videos. I like the idea of being able to share with you etudes that one day I will play or have already played and tell you what I think about, what details I like and what others I wish to improve:
This time I am playing etude #8 from E. Koehler's book Op. 33. It is a quite demanding etude in terms of embouchure flexibility and phrasing. I quite liked the strength of the low register and the rit. and rubati that I do throughout the piece. It is a pity that the articulation in the high register is not quite consistent and that I hear some tension in the sound that comes from a lack of relaxation in playing.
The first indication we encounter is "grazioso" which means "with grace". It is important to avoid a heavy articulation, seek to attack with the tip of the tongue and quite lightly and quickly in order to achieve this emotion. Between measures 7 and 8 we find our first tempo change, an "allargando"; this indication invites us to slow down the speed of the music so that it breathes a little and, after performing the fermata, continue at the speed with which we started playing. This gesture will be repeated at least 3 more times throughout the study, the final being the most definite change of tempo, a "morendo e rall.", a dying and slowing down to finish such a beautiful study.
I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed studying and recording it for all of you.
And you, what do you think about it? Have you ever played this beautiful etude?

So far, this is one of the studies I have enjoyed the most. Despite the difficulty in maintaining sonority in the low register, control over slurred sixteenth notes, and phrasing in tempo changes; never stop making music while learning.

This is part of the 2022 Flute Festival we had at the Simón Bolívar Conservatory of Music, after 2 weeks of intense work by all the students, we celebrated with a ton of recitals where they were able to share their talent with all of us. On the final day of the festival, we had a professor's recital where I have the opportunity to play this beautiful Sonatina by Eldin Burton. This was my first time playing with a pianist after years of pandemic lockdown so I feel very happy to have the opportunity to play this awesome piece with the great pianist Sadao Muraki.

Ornamentation in the classical period inherited much from its predecessor. In those times it was not customary to write down all the notes to be ornamented because it was considered that the performer's job was to know where and how to ornament the melodies. Mozart's case is no different, we could listen to a single piece played by 10 different flutists, and they will be 10 different versions. It's not about looking for who is right, I like to believe that all versions are equally beautiful in their own way.
In this class I am teaching one of my students how to deal with trills in Mozart and how to phrase these beautiful melodies.

It has happened to all of us. We work hard all week and just on the day of the class we get a headache, the weather is bad and the planets align so that everything sounds bad that day. As a student I've been there too so it's always important to work through that frustration with my students and invite them to accept it as an unavoidable part of the musical growth process.

We all have to practice our technique, that is something we already know. However, many times we don't know why. Technique is not a set of rules that the teacher invented to give us a headache, it is a set of mechanics that allow us a more relaxed, productive and above all, healthy performance. We play for many hours and if we do it with inadequate postures, we can suffer injuries at some point.
That is why I tend to be quite demanding with my students regarding their technique, from how to place their feet on the floor to how to place the tip of the little finger. Everything matters but always remember one thing: technique is a tool, not an end. The goal will always be our beloved music.

"Married Life" is a theme from the movie "Up" by Pixar studio. It is one of my favorite movies and this beautiful theme tells us about the beauty of love, family and building a whole life together with your partner. I wanted to do something with this beautiful song so I arranged a cover with piccolo, flute and piano and share so I can share it with all of you.
For those who are interested in playing it, here is the link with the sheet music: https://www.arrangeme.com/title/A509501

Another day to play and learn from my student’s repertoire. In today’s video I’m playing the 6th study from the 15 Easy Studies by Ernst. Koehler.
Slur big intervals going into the high register is one of my weak points. My embouchure is not that stable and I used to feel uncomfortable and feel stressed when playing something like this. I can see how my shoulders and throat are a bit tense and how that affect the sound. The phrasing is pretty and I really like some phrase’s endings. I could say this is a study with a lot of energy and charisma (the first word you see on it is “deciso” which means decided in Italian), invites you to practice your legato technique without accent the high notes and keeping the tunning under control. It was a lot of fun play it indeed!
So tell me, did you play this beautiful study before? What do you think about it? What is your favorite part? Let me know your opinion below.

Working scales is a challenge to creativity, taking something apparently boring and repetitive and transforming it into a fun challenge to take on that makes us grow musically.
This is a small excerpt from a class with one of my students from Venezuela where we worked on his double tongue and at the same time reviewed the fingering of the high register, correcting small misunderstandings that hindered the correct execution of the highest notes of the scale.
And you, what do you do to improve your double-tonguing technique?

I don't know if I had told you, but I am a professor at the Simon Bolivar Conservatory of Music. For me, this has been a great experience because it is the school where I was trained and to be able to give back to future generations of flutists everything I received, is an honor. On the other hand, the students at the Conservatory tend to have different characteristics than my online students, they are usually teens and young adults committed to the instrument who want to make playing the flute their way of making a living. That is why they tend to get the best out of me, they demand that I am in the best conditions and the repertoire they work on is full of challenges. I am a teacher who will always be playing with you in class, for me playing is elemental in the teaching process, however, these guys from the Conservatory represent a great challenge because their repertoire is complex and difficult to play in an excellent way without having at least read it before. That is why I decided to start reviewing everything my students might be working on. I think it's an excellent opportunity to reencounter wonderful repertoire, learn from it and thus be able to teach my students many more things.
So I will be playing and recording part of that repertoire and sharing here my impressions and experiences, from the approach to the piece to my artistic and musical reflections.
The present piece is study number 4 from Ernest Koehler's first book (Op.33).
What do you think of the studio? Have you ever played this wonderful book? What experiences have you had playing Ernest Koehler's music?

I learned about the dizi flute thanks to @pedroeustache (one of my favorite flutists in the world). The moment I heard him play the music he recorded for the movie Kung Fu Panda movie, I knew that one day I play that instrument.
It turns out that about a year ago, I talked to @flaurinetista, an excellent wind instrument technician, and asked him if there was a way to build an affordable, yet good dizi that I could use it in my work as a session musician. He suggested to me the possibility of building the flute out of a PVC pipe.
Honestly, I was a little skeptical, but I took the suggestion and frankly, I love it! This is the first video I'm posting with this beautiful flute, the first of many since I fell in love with The Untamed's music, and I plan to upload more covers.
What do you guys think of this humble dizi, did you like the song, what other song should I cover? Let me know in the comments below.

Knowing how to learn is much more important than knowing what to learn.
Here I'm working on Seven Daily Exercises Op. 5 by F. Reichert, a wonderful book that's one of my favorites when it comes to technique practice. I'm playing exercise #3 in the key of Bb minor, one of the most difficult for me.
The goal I always have for myself and my students is to make progress through deliberate and responsible practice. Often we start playing from beginning to end, over and over again, without a specific strategy. This not only delays the learning process, but can also develop bad habits that complicate the mechanics of the fingers and even create unnecessary muscle tension that can lead to injury. To avoid this, we need to stay focused and aware of what's happening with our body and our sound. Listen, identify the problem(s), and then address them in a creative and playful way.
Technical practice can be repetitive, but it doesn't have to bore you!
What technical exercises do you play and what are your favorites?

How many times have we had to say no to our family and friends when they invited us out because we had to practice?
Learning an instrument and taking your playing to mastery levels requires many hours of work, entire weekends accompanied only by scales and your instrument.
But how much of this is really necessary? If being a musician is to play what we are and live, isn't going out to share with our families a form of inspiration, of acquiring experiences to play later?
I believe that the answer lies in maintaining a balance between our relationship with the flute and our rest time; understanding that not every practice session is beneficial because there is a difference between playing and practicing.
To make progress in our practices, we need absolute concentration and not all the time we have the energy for it. And you know what? It's okay, there's nothing wrong with that.
If you are tired, if you feel sick or if you just don't want to play today, don't do it, go out and enjoy yourself with your family, recharge your batteries and come back to the study room the next day.
I promise you that your flute will be there, waiting for you as always.
