For this episode I’m joined by therapist, educator, and author Dr. Pavna Sodhi for a clinically rich conversation about racial trauma in BIPOC communities. She is the writer of a book titled Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy for the BIPOC Community. To learn more about Dr. Sodhi you can check out her IG @sunotherapy

Together, we explore:

🔹 How racial trauma, intergenerational trauma, and immigration trauma show up in the body
🔹 Why culturally rooted and spiritually attuned therapy is essential for healing
🔹 The difference between traditional Western models and culturally grounded mental health care
🔹 How therapists and healers can show up with deeper empathy, humility, and presence
🔹 What it means to decolonize therapy in real and embodied ways

Whether you’re a mental health professional, a person of color on a healing journey, or someone curious about how trauma-informed care intersects with race, culture and identity, this conversation is for you.

In this episode, I’m joined by Liz Fonseca, LMFT, a licensed mental health therapist and an artist at heart, to talk about how baking sourdough bread became a personal and creative healing practice.

Liz shares how stepping into the kitchen helped her reconnect with herself outside of her clinical role. As someone who supports others through therapy, she also needed a space to create, reflect, and be present. Breadmaking became that space one that’s slow, hands-on, and full of meaning.

We talk about how creative rituals like baking can support emotional wellness, regulate the nervous system, and offer grounding when life feels overwhelming. Liz offers insight into how she balances her identity as a therapist with her need to express herself creatively.

In this episode, we explore:
• Liz’s journey as a therapist and creative
• How she got into sourdough baking
• What breadmaking has taught her about presence and self-connection
• The value of creative practices for mental health
• Giving ourselves permission to explore new chapters

Keywords & Topics:

Therapist podcast, mental health, healing through creativity, sourdough bread, self-care, nervous system support, creative healing, embodiment, therapist identity, therapist creativity

A moving meditation is a form of meditation that involves a specific motion as a way to clear the mind and connect with the present moment. Instead of focusing solely on the breath or a mantra, the meditator brings their awareness to the sensations and movements of their body, which can help bring a greater sense of focus and relaxation. Some people find that movement-based meditation helps them access a deeper state of mindfulness than seated meditation.

This week's meditation is a guided visualization introducing us to shadow work. A shadow work meditation is a type of guided meditation that focuses on exploring the parts of ourselves that we may usually keep hidden or repress. It is a deep and introspective practice that allows us to face those aspects of ourselves that we may deem as negative, shameful or undesirable. By doing shadow work, we allow ourselves to develop a more profound sense of self-awareness and better understand the complexity of our emotions and behaviors, allowing us to grow, heal, and achieve greater personal fulfillment.

This meditation will guide you on a gentle journey to connect with your inner child. Your inner child personifies your emotional wounds. The concept of the inner child gives your nervous system a face, giving you a concrete glimpse of the healing you still need to do. Being around children naturally elicits feelings of tenderness, compassion, acceptance, and love. Seeing your past emotional wounds represented as your inner child makes it much easier to give yourself all the empathy, compassion, & love you need.

This week's meditation will guide you to connect each of the energetic centers of your body, also known as chakras. Chakra means “wheel,” and they are spinning disks. They correspond to nerves, major organs, and areas of our energetic body that affect our mind, body, and spirit. Seven main chakras run along your spine. Each of these seven main chakras has a corresponding number, location, name, and color. I will guide you on connecting to each chakra to open and align them one at a time.

These are the chakra locations in the body:

  1. Root Chakra: Base of the Spine
  2. Sacral Chakra: Sacrum
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra: Solar Plexus
  4. Heart Chakra: Middle of the Chest
  5. Throat Chakra: Throat
  6. Third Eye Chakra: Middle of the Forehead
  7. Crown Chakra: Top of the Head

This meditation comes from the UCLA Mindful Awareness and Research Center titled “Working with Difficulties.” In this meditation, you will practice "pendulation," a technique from Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing (SE).  SE is a trauma healing and therapeutic approach that involves our body's natural ability to heal from trauma.  Pendulation is about noticing a feeling in your body and how that feeling changes. This technique allows you to tap into and support your natural healing process intentionally.

Day #10 of 10

I started this challenge to help you connect with your inner child more profoundly and intentionally. The goal of each meditation is to help you initiate a personal practice and communion with your inner child. Your inner child represents parts within you that are searching for healing, support, growth, validation, love, attention, and most importantly, compassion. And yet they are the least likely to get attention from us because they are painful to look at.

When you visualize these parts as your inner child, it is much easier for you to give these the healing medicine they need. Through your inner child, you can help heal your past wounds in a more loving, gentle, softer, and compassionate way.

A famous saying goes, "when the student is ready, the teacher appears." So if you are curious about inner child work now, I believe you are ready to allow your inner child to be your teacher!

Hello Everyone!

A new episode of my podcast has been dropped! This episode is with my dear friend and colleague Karina Sicairos, LCSW. Karina and I have been friends for many years. One thing about our friendship is that we can talk for hours! Since we always have the best conversations, we decide to record one of these platicas for the podcast! During our conversation, we talked about generational healing in the midst of raining children and caring for our aging parents. We also talked about self-care and why it is critical to have a solid practice! We both opened up about our fertility journeys, career pressures, and what inspires us to keep working with the populations we serve. I opened up more than in the prior episodes, and I forgot we were recording. In short, this was total comadres episode!
