When you think of innovation, Vitamin D is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind. But meet 92-year old Dr. Hector DeLuca. He has spent his life researching Vitamin D and still finding exciting new information. Dr. DeLuca is an emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin where he has three buildings named after him for his immense contributions and discoveries. He has made 8 drugs during his lifetime involving vitamin D, has numerous patents and has been nominated twice for The Nobel. He has recently received his first device patent and is currently studying the effects of UVB light therapy and its healing properties, specifically in MS patients and also its affect on the immune system.

Patients with Glioblastoma brain tumors, require more than just brain surgery. After the procedure they have a high likelihood of recurrence at the same site of the original tumor. The standard of care to slow this recurrence is a series of in-hospital radiation treatments, limiting the patient's quality of life without providing the expectation of a cure. Enter the amazing Gamma Tile -- a collagen-based tile carrying gamma-ray emitting isotopes. Think of it as a radioactive postage stamp that surgeons can place during the initial surgery, eliminating the need for returning to the hospital as well as being more convenient and effective. Med tech companies live or die based on approvals by the FDA. Hosts John MacMahon and Sandy Miller relate from their own experiences how previous FDA management was hard to predict and decisions often seemed erratic. This led to many companies moving their testing to Europe enabling Europe to bring new medical technologies to patients much sooner than the US. But a more effective, better informed FDA has reversed this trend and the United States has risen to the top for medical device testing and treating of patients.

After observing numerous brain surgeries, Kate Rosenbluth asked a question to a group of neurosurgeons. When their response was, I can't believe we didn't think of that, she knew that she was onto something. Her device, the Cala Trio, is a new, non-invasive option for essential tremor. Until now, the only other options were prescription medicine or brain surgery. Follow us on Kate's journey along with CEO of Cala Health, Renee Rosenbluth, who immediately understood Kate's vision and pushed her to start the company shortly after delivering her second child. As a professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Paul Yock wanted to find a way pay it forward. Stanford BioDesign is the result of that vision. Along with our very own Sandra Miller, they created a program that brought together problem solvers from different fields and taught them how to form cross-discipline teams identifying and solving patients' needs. The program's inception tapped into the substantial resources of Stanford and the Silicon Valley medTech community to support emerging med-tech innovators. Entering its third decade, the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, as it is now known, has generated medical technologies and inspired similar training programs in over 17 countries. The question that drove the biodesign program was, "Can innovation be taught?" And the answer is a resounding YES! The center has reached over 7.6 million patients (and counting) with technologies initiated by trainees in the program.

Meet Dr. Paul Yock! Dr. Yock is famous for fundamentally improving cardiac interventions over his entire career. He walks us through the basics of a heart attack and how they were treated from the time his career began to now. His Rapid Exchange (RX) catheter innovation "rapidly" became the global standard. As the treatment for heart attack evolved to include cardiac stents, he next invented a catheter to see inside the patient's arteries and optimize stent deployment and patient outcomes. Dr. Paul Yock has won awards as an engineer as well as a cardiologist and is the founding director of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign dedicated to advanced training and medical technology.
