Artist Victoria Chick appears on Big Blend Radio every third Saturday where she discusses art, artists, and art history. From the art of seascapes to plein air painting and petroglyphs, Victoria s a long-time Big Blend art expert and contributor focusing on noteworthy artists, art movements throughout history, as well as the development of various art modalities. From the past to the present, her articles showcase how art documents and preserves history and the stories of people and places around the world.
Based in Silver City, New Mexico, Victoria Chick is a contemporary figurative artist and printmaker, who also collects early 19th-20th century prints. She attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas where John Bashor, Chairman of the Art Department, introduced her to drawing from the model and, in particular, gesture drawing, beginning a life – long interest in expressing movement. Chick received her B.A. in Art from the University of Missouri at Kansas City where muralist Eric Bransby was her most influential studio professor. Her interest in Art History also developed at this time. She was awarded an M.F.A. in Painting from Kent State University in Ohio. Other influential experiences include work as a registered Art Therapist (ATR) and teaching studio and art history courses at the college and university levels. George Catlin was an American painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the American frontier. Many of the places he traveled through are parts of our National Park Service today. He explored the American West five times during the 1830s, and wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. The roots of Celtic Art are very old yet can still be seen to influence the arts of calligraphy and jewelry today. The motifs and decorative patterns related to what we call Celtic Art can be found in a wide geographic area from the New Grange tomb in Ireland dating from 3300 B.C. (pre-dating the Great Pyramids of Egypt) to the Scythian art found as far east as Siberia dating from the 7th century B.C., and in nearly every European country in between. Exceptions are those countries along the Mediterranean coast where the influences of Classical civilization were strong.

Regionalist painter, lithographer, and muralist Thomas Hart Benton (1889 -1975) was a son of Missouri, and, although he studied modern art trends in Europe, spent years in New York, and was the first artist to have his picture on the cover of Time Magazine, he moved back to Missouri and made his mark on it with murals across the State and by influencing young artists through his teaching.
