Loudmouth Lobby Podcast: Recent Episodes

Nicole àBeckett

Loudmouth Lobby is for those of you who care about elections but maybe wait until the last minute to read up on how you should vote then ask that one friend you trust to tell you how to vote on EVERYTHING. Well I am that one friend and I can be your friend too. My name is Nicole àBeckett and I NERD OUT on political info. In this podcast, I’ll be talking with my friends who are a lot like you - they really care about the outcome of elections but don’t necessarily have the same passion, or time, that I do to get as informed as they would like. We’re going to break down everything on the ballot from propositions to mayor, to judges and even state controller…because it matters and they’ll probably ask a lot of the same questions you would ask. Each issue and candidate will have its own episode so you can listen to what you want when you want. We’ll keep it light and tight and I may even spill a little tea from time to time just to keep things interesting.

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has been disastrous for all of Los Angeles. Luckily we have a strong alternative on the ballot- former Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna.

My friend Joe Valdez and I discuss the candidates for LA County Sheriff and how the question isn't if Chief Luna is qualified, it's if he can increase his name recognition enough by November 8th. Hopefully this helps!

Here is the New Yorker article on Villanueva and the LASD gang crisis referenced by Joe.

Our discussion on Measure A  starts at 35:30

In this hilarious and lively discussion with my fave LA girl, Natalia Foroutan, we discuss the candidates for Mayor of LA: Karen Bass and Rick Caruso.

This is more a discussion on why Karen Bass is everything we need in a mayor for the time we're in and Rick Caruso is woefully unprepared for the time we're in. Listen to get some talking points on why we stan KB and she's the best candidate for Los Angeles.

Council District 13 covers the heart of central Los Angeles from Atwater Village to Echo Park, Silver Lake to Larchmont and all of Hollywood!

This very important district is in a tight race between the incumbent - Mitch O'Farrell and labor organizer Hugo Soto-Martinez. One wants to abolish the police and the other believes in public safety. Listen to find out!

This is an important race to me because it is my council district! I am joined by my Hollywood neighbor, Joseph Blea, to discuss the two candidates and share some  disheartening stories about one of the candidates.

I'm joined by my dear friend and PR maven Kelly Howard of EightSixtySouth to discuss the LA City Council District race that includes her neighborhood - Council District 5.

Katy Young Yaroslavsky and Sam Yebri face off in an open seat race to replace Paul Koretz. The two candidates do not differ too much so Kelly and I talk through some of the issues that matter to her - public safety & homelessness - and where each candidate stands.

Check out my voter guide for my pick.

For this episode, I am joined by my good friend and book club book junkie, Ariel Kochbarski, to discuss the race for City Councilmember in Council District 11 (CD11) and LA County Supervisor for District 3.

A councilmember is the most local and impactful representative you have in government. CD 11 extends from the airport to the palisades, west of the 405, including Westchester, Venice, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. The two candidates are Erin Darling and Traci Park.

I was leaning Traci Park and ultimately commit hard to her based on some shady campaigning by Erin Darling that I discuss in this episode.

For LA County Supervisor, District 3, it's a little more up in the air. The candidates are Lindsey Horvath and Bob Hertzberg. Listen and learn why this race really is a toss-up.

This is a cut from my longer episode with Brandon Ross on the City of LA specific Measure ULA which will levy a 4% tax on sales/transfers of real property exceeding $5 million, and 5.5% on properties of $10 million or more generating approximately $600 million - $1.1 billion annually for programs to combat homelessness.

Sounds great, right? Well, we've seen this show before. Does the city really need to punish itself...yet again for minimal results? Does everyone remember Measure H and HHH? Here's a reminder again, just in case: H & HHH. What's the definition of insanity again?

Listen to hear what we really think about the largest proposed tax increase in the City of LA history.

Kids mental health is on the ballot in California! Really, proposition 28 is about arts & music funding for public schools but ultimately it will lead to greater mental health outcomes for children and our communities.

Join my discussion with my good friend, architect and local school board candidate, Jerome Chang. We share why this proposition does way more than fund art supplies - it really is the basis of mental health therapy for California youth.

We also discuss prop 31 which will keep in place a law that bans flavored tobacco. California outlawed most flavored tobacco in 2020 but the gritty tobacco companies keep doing the most to overturn it. Learn more about their disregard for children and public health in my discussion with Jerome.

Here is more information from Cal Matters on Prop 28 and Prop 31.

This is a special episode of the Loudmouth Lobby Podcast. I jump back on the pod with my friend Brandon Ross to dissect the leaked audio from LA City Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo and Kevin De León and what it means for LA. We get into the hate it shows to communities and how it may and SHOULD affect the upcoming election. We also share our thoughts on how we can do better at electing the right representatives.

If you don't know what we're talking about, read and listen here from the LA Times.

According to Cal Matters, Proposition 1 would amend the California Constitution to enshrine a fundamental right to reproductive freedom. That includes the right to choose to have an abortion and the right to choose or refuse contraceptives.

Joining Nicole to discuss the importance of Proposition 1 is her good friend & hot-girl hiking buddy, Safia Pulliam.  They talk why California, the bastion of pro-choice, needs this proposition to pass overwhelmingly and why its not just for the ladies.

episode note: this was our first ever recording. please forgive the poor audio quality. we do get it figured out!
