I am a physician-scientist that has worked in multiple academic centers in the United States. I have lived in poverty, suffered abuse, and overcame those obstacles to become an academic physician-scientist at a major University in the United States. I hope that my experiences can help other biomedical researchers and clinicians obtain perspectives to improve their work life balance. I discuss topics related to work-life balance, navigating careers in academic medicine, and discuss ways in which we can use our skill sets from biomedical and clinical research to improve our personal lives. I also spend time discussing how to utilize our skill sets to improve our financial situations so that we can regain our balance and decrease our dependency on our earned work. I look forward to you joining our community as we all work together to regain balance.

Working in science exposes you to people from very different backgrounds. Although many of us enjoy this attribute of the profession, cultural expectations from mentor and mentee may differ. Today I will perform a deep dive in an incredible manuscript authored by Obara, et al., that investigated the influence of national culture o mentoring relationships in Japan. I provide perspectives from my own career, and discuss some of the excerpts of their participants. Peer review is a constant source of frustration amongst biomedical and clinical researchers. It also causes a significant quantity of unnecessary stress to junior trainees who often feel that the values of the peer review process conflict with their own values. In this podcast I review why we have a peer review system, what niche the journals have filled, and what compensation (or lack of) is given to peer reviewers. There is nothing more daunting for trainees than to understand the differences between the American academic healthcare ecosystems. As a young trainee, you are deciding to invest nearly a decade of your youth to a biomedical research and/or healthcare system for your training, but it is so very obscure what these systems are, how the work, and explanations are scant. In today's episode, I break down the US Academic Healthcare landscape. My name is Jose, and in this podcast I highlight some excerpts from my life story that I feel have given me perspective for you.
