Ryan Robinson recently completed his first season as head coach of the Elizabeth High School baseball team. It was a year of New Beginnings that actually started last fall when the team, their families and community members came together to upgrade the home ballfield. It continued into the spring season with improvements to the dugouts.
That commitment to the program led to big strides on the field as well: The Cardinals doubled their win total from last year and cut their earned run average in half.

Summer Katzoff has been coaching sports for more than two decades, including the last 11 as the head coach of girls soccer at Elizabeth High School. She’s also a co-sponsor of student council and, of course, a teacher. If that weren’t enough, last fall she added girls flag football coach to her resume.
It took until the end of the school year to find a free moment or two with her to chat about her teams and her approach to helping student athletes build skill and confidence, but this interview was worth the wait.

As Rebecca Miller and the returning members of her 19-7 Elizabeth High School softball team prepare for their 2024 season, we’re taking a few moments to look back at her first year as the head coach.
After serving as an assistant coach for the previous several years at the high school level, plus coaching wave after wave of middle school softball players, Coach Miller finds herself at the center of a powerhouse program that has been successful for the better part of a decade. How does she maintain those high standards and plan to exceed them? That’s part of why we had this wide-ranging conversation.

Chris Martinez took the helm of the Elizabeth High School girls basketball program this past season with a two-word expectation of his players: Show up.
That may sound simple, but it had multiple meanings – and it gained more nuance as the season went on – with Coach Martinez employing valuable lessons he has learned from coaching multiple sports, traveling the world, teaching business technology, working as a private-sector entrepreneur for two decades, and being a sponsor of EHS’ chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America. In other words, his players learned how to be winners on the court and off it.

Elizabeth High School fields nearly 20 athletic teams throughout the school year, and at the center of them all is Athletic Director and Assistant Principal John Everhart. The name of this podcast series was adapted from Everhart’s “Demand Excellence” initiative which was intended to ensure every team was competitive and dedicated to bringing out the best in each student athlete.
A former basketball star and coach himself, Everhart is a positive and powerful motivator. Listeners are in for a treat as you can hear him fire up as he starts talking about the value of athletics and how they help students grow into well-rounded, capable people.

Becoming a successful volleyball player for Elizabeth High School starts with a commitment to do everything possible to be a well-rounded, healthy student athlete. Head Coach Tracy Wait makes sure the members of his team see the big picture as much as they sweat the small stuff. And it works: Last season, the Cardinals finished second in their league with a 19-6 mark overall and 8-2 in the league.
In this edition of “Demanding Excellence” you’ll hear Coach Wait explain his approach to guiding success on the court while teaching lessons that will keep his players mentally and physically strong long after their last side-out.
This is the third in our audio series, hosted by Elizabeth School District Public Information Officer Jason Hackett, featuring conversations with EHS coaches in various sports to find out how they Demand Excellence.

With three 8-win seasons in a row, the Elizabeth High School football team has responded well to the school-wide Demand Excellence initiative.
LIfelong Elizabeth Cardinals are rare birds indeed, but Head Coach Buzz Zoesch might be one of the rarest of all. He played for the Cards as a high School student himself, back when the high school was at the current middle school building. Since then he worked his way through the coaching ranks and has been the head coach for nearly a decade.
If anyone can define what it means to be a Cardinal, it’s Coach Buzz. As you’ll hear in this conversation, that means toughness and running the ball on the field and being a team player who shows leadership characteristics at all times off the field.
In other words, demanding excellence. For Coach Buzz, that’s a path of continuous improvement.
Activities and sports outside of the classroom often can be just as important to students’ growth as what they learn during the school day – it’s how they learn teamwork, leadership, and time management – not to mention what other skills and interests they have. For some it may be what keeps them coming back to school every day. Others may be chasing scholarships or other opportunities.
With this in mind, Elizabeth High School’s athletic director John Everhart and his coaches have been on a mission to Demand Excellence. In fact, those words are the central theme for their overall approach to help student athletes grow a wide range of skills and abilities, represent their school and community well and raise the level of accomplishment whether they’re on a court, a field or mat.
We’re kicking off the series with the Coaches of the Poms and Spirit Team, Amber Rusk and Brooke Newton, who along with having a season that stretches across multiple other sports seasons, also have a couple of clinics coming up when Mini-Cardinals from preschool through 8th grade will get the chance to learn a routine and join the high school team during a halftime performance of an upcoming game.
The clinics are for two age groups and on two dates -- Jan. 31 and Feb. 9, at EHS:
Preschool participants must be potty trained.
The performance will be at halftime of the Feb. 12 EHS girls varsity game versus Falcon, which starts at 7 p.m.
The cost of the clinic is $40 per child includes a t-shirt for the practices and performance as well as entrance to the game. There are $5 discounts for friends/siblings (two for $75) and a $5 discount for Wrangler Cheer and Spark Dancers. Advance registration is due by Jan. 30. Same-day registration is $50 per child.

Elizabeth High School All-Conference seniors Briggs Griffin and Jason Weber – both point guards – recently played in All-State basketball games to put a cap on their high school careers.
Briggs’ experience representing Class 4A in the All-State Game on March 27, put together by the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports organization. Her appearance in the All-State game was the first for an Elizabeth girls player since 2018, when her current coach, Olivia Whitworth, played in the game. Jason played at the 719 Basketball Blowout, presented by All Goals Basketball, at Vanguard High School in Colorado Springs on March 18.
In this podcast interview, they talk about their high school careers, their love for basketball, and their future plans. They also share some advice for younger players.
Brighid Griffin’s 2022-23 Season Stats for Basketball
24 games played; Per-game averages: 8.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.8 steals; 0.3 blocks. For the season, she made 30 three-pointers and hit 76% of her free throws.
Briggs finished her EHS career holding the school record for most three-pointers in a game and is second all-time in career steals with 242.
Jason Weber’s 2022-23 Season Stats for Basketball
23 games played; Per-game averages: 15.2 points; 7.3 rebounds; 3.7 assists; 1.2 steals; 0.3 blocks. For the season, he made 32 three-pointers and hit 74% of his free throws.
Those tallies put him at first in the Colorado Springs Metro League in assists, second in double-doubles, fourth in scoring, rebounding and free throws.
Thanks to Coaches Jaime Schmalz and Aaron Hedman and Athletic Director John Everhart for help with stats and information.

This series coincides with School Counselor Appreciation Week, which is Feb. 6-10, 2023, as these are released.
This is the second episode in a special series on the podcast feed. It's called Elizabeth Schools In Person, and it features Connie Hines, the counselor at Singing Hills Elementary School.
We started distributing this podcast in order to make school-board meeting audio more accessible, but we’re starting another, semi-regular program on this feed to help shine a spotlight on the day-to-day happenings in our schools.
The idea is simple: Have a conversation about interesting people doing interesting things in our schools. We try to keep our newsletters brief and to the point; and everyone knows videos need to be short and sweet. So if we wanted to spend a little more time getting to understand the different aspects of our public school district, a podcast made the most sense.
