You can craft a life and legacy of earthly excellence and sacred significance if you're intentional about life's key three aims: Learn yourself, Love God, and Live connected. But how? By aligning with truths about yourself, God, and others. You'll be equipped, inspired, and strengthened with timeless truths and modern insights on human dynamics and development. You can achieve your immeasurable, eternal, and irreplaceable impact -- and help upcoming generations do the same. Come curious. Go galvanized! https://www.stephaniepresents.com/
Often the most difficult decisions aren't between what's good and bad but between what's good, better, and best. What can be "best" in one season or situation might become "good" or "better" in another.
Unfortunately, decisions seldom (never?) come labeled as "Good, Better, and Best." Instead, we rely on God's direction which can take many different forms.
Today's episode will be the last for awhile...or maybe forever. I may return to the Godly Impact podcast with a similar format, a complete make-over, or launch a brand-new version. I may never host a podcast again. Only God knows what the future holds.
I value you, whether you're a brand-new or long-time listener. If we're not already connected through my weekly newsletter, I invite you to sign up at Stephanie Presents.
So whether this is "Goodbye" for now or for good, remember my sign-off statement: You have an impact that is immeasurable, eternal, and irreplaceable. I pray you make it godly!
Carbon is like purpose.
The chemical backbone of all known life, carbon is the fourth most abundant element in the universe and the second most abundant in your body. It forms more compounds than all other elements combined.
Carbon creates diamonds -- and pencils. Both have worth, but not equal value. Our purposes are similar.
In the "You're in the People Business," series, I've used the six essential chemical elements for physical life to demonstrate the six vital elements of the inner life. I've covered:
Today's episode is about Purpose (carbon).
Purpose is a backbone, not a bonus. Purpose is not a luxury but the framework everything else is dependent on. All purposes are not created equal. Some are diamond and others are pencils. The difference is how it's connected — and the pressure it undergoes.
The same is true for people. Purpose forged under pressure, properly connected to others, produces something extraordinary.
Purpose decays by default. We use carbon dating to measure how alive or dead something is. Purpose works the same way — left unattended, it deteriorates. It doesn't grow on its own. It requires intention.
Purpose operates on two levels:
Big meaning — the universal "why" that applies to everyone
Small meaning — the specific "why" that applies uniquely to you
Purpose isn't required to survive — people survive all the time without it. We keep taking the next step, hitting the next milestone, staying busy. But to truly thrive, purpose is non-negotiable. Its absence is easy to avoid confronting, which is exactly why so many people never do.
This Week's Challenge
• Where has purpose been quietly decaying in your life — in your work, relationships, or sense of self?
• Can you articulate both levels: the big meaning that connects you to others, and the specific meaning that is uniquely yours?
• What pressure in your life might actually be forming something valuable, if you stay connected to purpose through it?

Nike's swoosh and Apple's logo are worth billions not because of their design, but because those companies intentionally created, promoted, and protected them. You have a brand too — as an individual, a family, a team, an organization. The question is whether you're being intentional about it.
In Part 5 of the "You're in the People Business" series, I explore how individualism weakens identity and how independence has been confused with maturity. True maturity is recognizing we are interdependent by design. Strong identity is never formed in isolation — it's realized in the context of belonging to something larger than ourselves.
The other extreme is just as damaging. Australia's "tall poppy syndrome" and Germany's prioritization of uniformity over individuality show what happens when the pendulum swings too far the other way. The goal is balance: individual expression and corporate belonging.
Three ways identity is shaped:

Hydrogen is the lightest, most abundant element in the universe — and the force behind nuclear fusion in the sun. In Part 4 of the "You're in the People Business" series, I explore hydrogen's relational equivalent: curiosity.
First come the questions we ask ourselves. We only develop self-awareness to the degree we ask ourselves honest, deep questions — and answer them at the base level. Stopping at surface-level observations ("I won't do that again") without understanding why only increases the chance of repeating the pattern.
Knowing and being known is complicated. We have a pushmi-pullyu relationship with self-knowledge and vulnerability — drawn toward it and afraid of it at the same time. Curiosity requires courage on both fronts.
Curiosity + Empathy = Relational Intimacy. Just as hydrogen and oxygen form water, curiosity fused with empathy creates something new: genuine relational security and intimacy. Without empathy, curiosity becomes data-mining — and data can become a weapon.
Curiosity without good motives causes destruction. We should be honest about why we're seeking to know someone, and we don't owe everyone unlimited access to our story.

Phosphorus is one of the most reactive elements in existence — so unstable that it's never found alone in nature. When bonded with the right elements, phosphorous gives us strength and energy.
Expectations in relationships work the same way. We've long been told that poor communication is the number one reason relationships fail. I challenge that assumption. The real culprit? Misalignment of expectations — because most communication never goes beyond the first few layers of the Communication Pyramid.
Rarely does our communication reach the base: the expectations that reveal what we believe about our place in a relationship and in the world. Getting there is uncomfortable, partly because we're never taught to do it, and partly because our expectations expose what we believe we're entitled to — and that can be a vulnerable, unflattering thing to admit.
But when we bring our expectations into the open and align them with truth, something new forms — stability, clarity, and genuine connection. Just like phosphorus bonded with calcium.
Your challenge this week: Start a conversation from the base of the pyramid. Be courageously honest about what you're expecting — of yourself and of others. You'll be amazed at the difference.

Today I focus on something smelly, sometimes even stinky. But success in every relationship requires this. Yep, every one. Between parents and kids, colleagues, businesses and customers, friends, and well, the list is as extensive as the types of human relationships.
It’s like sulfur. Not exactly tasty or pleasant but incredibly healing and critical for life.
What is this crucial but smelly item? The work of repair.

Happy 200th episode!
In celebration -- and consideration of the path forward -- I share the four questions only courageous people ask. Some people ask themselves one or two, but those who dig into all four are most likely to grow ordinary into extraordinary.
What am I willing to do to get it? Desire doesn't produce any results. Only actions. How this question gets answered determines whether a person is content to live in "Desireland" or do the work to build "Achievementland."

What builds an extraordinary life?
Today we'll look at four more practices in the "Stop the Splatter" series which are building blocks of "extraordinary." The "big" events and actions reveal extraordinary faith, character, and abilities, but they don't build these. Rather, extraordinary is built by faithfully completing the "ordinary."
I address four specific practices:
Writing -- to remember God's faithfulness and goodness; to show appreciation; to deal with thoughts and emotions instead of being drug around by them.
Whistling -- a positive mindset, a joyful heart, a whistle-while-you-work is one of the hallmarks of extraordinary people
Words -- whether spoken to yourself or others, all words will build up or tear down; speak death or life.
Worship -- nothing will reorient your perspective and how you show up more than worship.
Combine these practices with the five from Episodes 196 & 197: Word, Walk, With, Withdrawal, and 40 Winks. You can build an extraordinary life and avoid splattering yours by faithfully and intentionally practicing these nine actions.

Holy Week in the Christian faith is a microcosm of life. One day everything is filled with sunshine and joy. Then things get a little “weird.” Then everything falls apart. We can draw strength knowing God is still always with us.
When life is filled with joy, we don’t need to live in fear wondering when the “other shoe is going to drop.” These times are also ordained by God. When things get weird, we can examine whether we are focusing on God or others. When all falls apart, we can know resurrection follows death. Perhaps not in the way we imagine, but it will come if we remain faithful.

The "ordinary" wrecks more lives than the "extraordinary."
The "ordinary" builds more lives than the "extraordinary."
Seldom does a big, transformative conversation, event, or opportunity come out of nowhere. Usually there is a trail of ordinary actions repeated through ordinary days that lead to success -- whether in relationships, health, or careers.
Conversely, ordinary actions which aren't taken lead to failure.
Continuing last week's series on "Stop the Splatter," we look today at the importance of With, Withdrawal, and Winks.
We need to be with people; we need to withdrawal and experience solitude with God; we need sleep, aka 40 winks. We are not merely brains and hearts boxed into an inert container. Our bodies are as much part of God's design as our minds and hearts.
Be reminded and encouraged about the importance of sustained "ordinary" practices to keep from drifting into dangerous waters or out to sea where you're lost. Keep living with intentionality. Your immeasurable, eternal, and irreplaceable impact depends on it.

Nobody wakes up one day and says, "Today's the day I begin the journey to ruining my career, marriage, reputation, finances, kids, friendships, ___." Instead, small steps always precede big splatters. Always.
Whether it's allowing small grudges to fester, inviting inappropriate flirtations, or justifying "losing it," small wrong steps eventually lead to terrible outcomes.
The great news is small steps also lead to great outcomes! Today we focus on two simple steps within most people's ability in normal circumstances. Getting into the Word and getting out for a walk. Don't let the familiar fool you. It's not knowing what to do that matters; it's doing it.
(Preaching to the choir here, folks.)

Using the 1944 film Gaslight as a launching point, we explore the difference between interrogating a story and talking yourself out of one. Sorting this out often requires outside help, however, don’t confuse someone stockpiling evidence to support a conclusion they’ve already reached with someone gathering data to reach a conclusion. The first is confirmation bias in action. The second is what genuine help looks like.
We expand the four-step framework to five and the importance of facing true stories -- whether they are happy or not.

This episode tackles one of the trickiest territories in the story series: the stories we tell ourselves about other people’s motives. When someone doesn’t respond to a text on our schedule, doesn’t mention a couples’ event, or shows up with flowers after an argument, a story begins. This week we learn how to interrogate those stories — and what to do once we have.
We unpack a familiar scenario in marriages to show how our storytelling plays out in real life. Learn the practical four-step process for handling stories about someone else’s motives — especially in close relationships.

What you tell yourself about your spouse, children, family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors will make or break your relationships. These stories carry the most emotional weight and, often, have the most at stake.
One of the most important reminders in this episode isintensity of emotion is not an accurate measurement of how true or false a story is. We tend to be far more emotionally invested in — and defensive about — our up-close personal stories than our impersonal ones. This applies to both the negative and the positive stories we tell. And it’s especially true when it comes to our children.

Where does racism, sexism, and classism begin? With a story. The habits we build at the micro-story level directly shape how we think at the macro level.
Macro stories tend to come in two varieties:
The micro-stories we’ve been tracking don’t just exist in isolation. They accumulate. Over time, they reveal and reshape our character, our mindset, and our expectations of others and ourselves. And many macro stories — the big ones — begin as a single micro story that grew.

We can cling to our stories like we keep clothes in the closet we haven't worn in six years. Why? In Part 2 of the "It's All In Your Head" series, we move beyond the labels of “positive” and “negative” and introduce a more useful framework: true, untrue, and unknown.
Paying attention to our stories is work. But like exercise, it gets easier with consistency. Once you experience the benefits, you’ll want to keep at it. And remember: we’re not only looking for negative stories that are costing us. We’re also looking for positive ones worth preserving and protecting.

Every day we tell ourselves hundreds — maybe thousands — of stories. Some are fleeting micro-stories that last only seconds; others stretch into full narratives. This episode explores why those stories matter so deeply: because they quietly shape our beliefs, drive our actions, define our character, and ultimately determine the impact we have on the world around us.
This Week’s Challenge
Begin paying attention to the stories you’re telling yourself — especially the micro-stories that play out in seconds. Here are some ways to track them:
Get curious about what you find. You might be surprised — some stories will be more judgmental or negative than you expected, and others will be more positive. Either way, don’t shame your stories back into hiding. You can’t change what you’re not willing to see.

The idea that enough pain motivates change is dangerous. While sufficient pain might prompt a person to change, it might also keep them from changing. Why?
Because pain can migrate from being an experience to becoming an identity.
Young women today are especially wrestling with this because significant and ongoing anxiety has become the "norm." While we want to bring empathy and compassion to this issue, are we promoting the very problem we want to solve by failing to bring truth?

Change is typically hard, especially when it's significant and has been tried before. While practices and techniques matter, the biggest obstacle is our mindset.

Sometimes the mirror of self-awareness doesn't make us look beautiful. What it reveals is ugly. That's what I experienced recently when tiny sprouts of envy kept popping up in my heart.
The solution began by choosing curiosity over shame. Rather than trying to spray these weeds with a quick prayer of repentance and then zipping on, I stopped to ask why they were growing in the first place. The answer?
My imagination had become too small. Huh?
Yep, there's a correlation between the activity of a holy imagination and the presence of envy. This examination also revealed the connection between pain and cynicism and how to be attuned to the suffering in the world without being consumed by it.

What's one element every relationship depends on for success?
Jesus told a story illustrating this with not just one but two plot twists. The first part of his story is as delightful for us today as it was for the original audience. The second and third parts? They take some swallowing!
Grace and forgiveness received but not given leads to God's judgment and will harm or destroy every relationship. It's not a matter of if, but only when and how much.
The parable of the unforgiving servant demonstrates with clarity that acquisition of knowledge is not equal to application of truth. We are not called to be information collectors but grace givers.

If a relationship doesn't have a higher purpose than itself, it won't be sustainable. If pleasure is the measurement of a successful relationship, by default that nurtures selfish people. Instead, when a relationship serves a higher purpose, fulfillment of duty becomes the measurement. Paradoxically, duty becomes a pleasure.
From King Solomon to Victor Frankl to John F. Kennedy, the importance of a mindset focused on responsibilities rather than pleasure is what sustains individuals and relationships.
Be strengthened to appreciate endurance is its form of achievement and understand why pleasure won't sustain a relationship but purpose will.

One of the unintended consequences of the concepts of "boundaries" and "toxic people" becoming mainstream is it's reinforced our default tendency to focus on other people's behavior instead of our own. Yet owning our choices is the most fundamental of all relational principles.
Victor Frankl's sobering statement summarizes the truth: "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
When we own our ability to choose how we're going to show up in every situation, regardless of how anyone else does, we will experience profound freedom.

Communication may be the key that unlocks the door in a relationship, but it's what's behind the door that unites or divides. Too often we've been taught to focus on crafting a beautiful door rather than examining what's on the other side.
All relationships rest on expectations. The more aligned the expectations, the greater the unity. The more misaligned the expectations, the greater the conflict. While this seems like a "well, duh," statement, the reality is we often never identify or express our expectations.
In today's episode, we look at principles including:
God has been expressing expectations from the Beginning.
Identifying and expressing expectations requires courageous honesty and vulnerability.
Identifying and expressing expectations reveals priorities, values, and beliefs about what we owe others and what they owe us.
Eliminating all expectations is ridiculous and shouldn’t be a goal. Aligning expectations with what is right, just, and reasonable is our goal. Any other approach isn't sustainable for the long term.

Would you like to become more than you currently think is possible and do things you feel are beyond you? Get real help in today’s episode with Audrey Rindlisbacher.
Audrey continues unpacking the seven laws of life she discovered on a desperate search for healing for herself, her marriage, and her family. Studying ordinary people who became extraordinary as they lived these seven laws, Audrey became energized and hopeful. Today she leads others to learn and live these principles—not in a formulaic, one-size-fits-all application—but in a manner governed by a person’s relationship with God.
Audrey is the author of The Mission Driven Life and founder of the Mission Driven Mom Academy. Over 600 women confirm Audrey’s teaching is substantive, understandable, and actionable. They love having a community, coaching, and friendships along with the course content in the Academy.

Exhausted and frustrated from a home life that was a mess, Audrey Rindlisbacher set out on a journey to find a different way to live. While counseling helped, she needed more tools. Determined not to give up, she began reading about heroes of the faith.
Audrey discovered these ordinary people with ordinary struggles chose to live by the principles of natural law which turned them into extraordinary individuals. The Ten Booms of The Hiding Place fame and Mother Theresa are a few examples. This pursuit, along with the study of Scripture, led her to identify the Seven Laws of Life--Four Foundational and Three Leadership.
In the first part of our conversation, Audrey speaks with courageous transparency and invites women to a life of wholeness, purpose, and self-mastery.
Applying these principles to her own life, marriage, and parenting, Audrey’s family transformed. She now equips other moms to see the transformation they desire in themselves and their families through the Mission Driven Mom Academy.

“The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”
“Talk is cheap.”
“Actions speak louder than words.”
If a person claims to want one thing but their actions say another, what's the truth? The answer isn't always as obvious as it may seem. Three questions help lead to the truth -- whether it's for someone else or yourself.
Discover how these questions help us answer the final question in our series on Life's Four Most Courageous and Crucial Questions. "What am I willing to do to get what I say I want?"
During this episode we'll look at:
We also see how teaching our children to use this question builds problem-solving skills.

What's one of the most courageous, vulnerable, and life-altering questions you can ask? Why make this part of your ongoing parenting dialogue?
"Why don't I have it?" ("It" being a goal or desire.)
Many frameworks about goals and outcomes include the two questions we've focused on the past two episodes:
But many don't ask the third. Without answering this question, you can get stuck on a hamster wheel or move from one race to another but never achieve what you want. Honest and in-depth answers to this question can reveal:
Discover how this question (along with the other three) helps not only ourselves but our children develop self-awareness, confidence, and humility.

When might the statement, "I just want God's will for my life," serve as a convenient evasion?
We continue last week's exploration of four crucial, courageous questions necessary for all of life. In Episode 159 we unpacked, "What do I want?" Today we look at "Why do I want this?"
Not only does this inquiry aid in uncovering the motivations behind our desires but also dismantles the shame that often inhibits our growth. By addressing these questions with curiosity rather than judgment, we allow ourselves to engage in a transformative process that fosters empowerment and intentionality in our lives.
Understanding our desires and motivations requires courage and humility, particularly when confronting the possibility of self-serving reasons. Often, however, we realize the "why's" behind our "wants" may be shackling us to self-limiting beliefs that aren't based on truth. Also, cultivating curiosity in our relationships enables deeper connections and insights into the values and motivations of those around us.
Listeners are encouraged to get curious this week with two of their own "wants" and "why's" and with one "want" and "why" with their family members. It can be surprising and revealing what answers turn up!

"What do you want?"
These four words compose one of life's scariest questions. But it's a crucial and ongoing inquiry for those courageously committed to earthly excellence and eternal significance.
Two brothers made a request of Jesus who responded by asking, "What do you want?" They got a "no" and a heart check.
A blind man came to Jesus who questioned, "What do you want?" He got a yes -- and a life transformed!
A lady in Aisle 13 was willing to answer, "What do you want?" and it became an opportunity for ministry both to her and the stranger who asked.
Listen in to discover why asking yourself this question is critical.

Intentional remembrance is a power tool for times of stress, fear, and conflict. It helps us refocus, refuel, and refuse damaging relationship cycles.
God made remembering a big deal in the Old Testament, and Jesus made it a priority in the New Testament.
Intentional remembering help us:
When used to process, not prosecute -- ourselves or someone else -- intentional remembering is one of the most powerful tools we have that's always ready to pick up and use!

If “God has given me everything I need to raise my kid,” as I’ve often heard, I have a question. “Where’d he put it?”
While I understand the good intentions behind this statement and others like it, this mindset does more harm than good.
Parenting is relationship work at its most complex, mysterious, and difficult. We know every other relationship arena – from marriage to business – requires actively acquiring knowledge and skills for success. Yet the shaping of human beings is supposed to somehow be innate – especially for moms. But this false narrative has a high cost.
Defensiveness and/or deep insecurity can result that leads to all kinds of missed opportunities, regrets, and adults in need of significant repair.
Innate capacity, desire, and protectiveness do not automatically produce knowledge and wisdom. If only it were that simple!
We can stop depriving parents, especially moms, of the keys they need to open doors of success with a new attitude!

What happens to the brain during adolescence?
No, it doesn't shut down or go off-line, although it can sometimes seem that way.
Rather, it goes through an astounding remodel. When parents, educators, and mentors understand this physical process, they can be empowered with confidence, effectiveness, and empathy.
Understanding our biology is a critical part of the journey to spiritual strength, emotional health, and relational wisdom. Learn how the brain remodels itself over a ten-year period, approximately ages 12-24, and why this knowledge is critical.

Artist, author, and speaker Cindy Egger continues to encourage and equip listeners to share their story of faith. She reminds us there's not one "right way" to introduce people to Jesus and we're not responsible for outcomes, only faithfulness.
Small acts of kindness, striking up simple conversations, meeting for coffee, and opening one's home can have a more profound impact on someone than we may know!

"You just can't live without Jesus!" Well, "Yes, you can," thought Cindy Egger, and she had been doing a "good" job of it for 30 years.
Raised in a good home and living a good life, Cindy wasn't resistant to the Gospel as much as she didn't see the need for it. Yet eventually she came to see her need for Jesus was much more about a changing internally than externally.
After coming to faith as an adult, God brought art back into Cindy's life, and this grew into a business and ministry which opened doors for sharing the "Good News" to thousands of individuals. Today she equips other women to share their faith as a natural part of their life, using their unique abilities.
She encourages us to remember that we're not responsible for outcomes but for actions of faithfulness, as we never know the full impact of sharing even one time with an individual, whether a child or adult.

If you don't want to live ruled by fear, anxiety, or insecurity, you're going to have to fight. Each person's battles are specific and unique and may change over time. But not fighting won't keep you safe; it will only keep you hidden and ineffective.
Kim Hardy shares how we can fight , not alone, but with God on our side! Kim uses her own journey to teach women and youth how aligning our thoughts with God's truth is key to transformation and this opens the door to hope.
Kim speaks about practical steps on taking control of one's thoughts to powerful reminders about not allowing the good in life to be a replacement for anchoring one's identity in Christ.

Emily Dickinson's infamous line, "Hope is a thing with feathers" can leave us thinking that hope is light, fanciful, and flighty. But true hope is like concrete anchored deep in bedrock.
Author and speaker Kim Hardy knows the immense need for hope after losing her father at a young age and her beloved brother as a young married woman. In her training as a teacher she began to realize how her unrecognized and unresolved issues were keeping her from a full life.
Along her journey of growth, her relationship with God changed as she saw him not as a distant figure but of being right next to her. He wasn't there to condemn but to help and give hope!

It's January and everybody's promising a program that will make this year amazing. Some have merit; others are money-making tactics. There are three "G's", however, that will absolutely impact how you finish 2025 -- and years beyond!
Three key attitudes: gratitude, grit, and a generational perspective shape us and others far more than is evident at first glance.
Without intentionally practicing these three attitudes, we'll default to cynicism, selfishness, victim thinking, laziness, and an entire stew of destructive traits.
But by integrating these three attitudes into our daily lives, we can create a more meaningful existence and positively influence those around us.

The holiday season, often touted as the most joyous time of the year, can paradoxically become a source of overwhelming stress!
But we can find peace and joy and say goodbye to chaos by reflecting on the promises found in Isaiah, particularly the four names attributed to Jesus: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
When we stop and meditate on what is contained in these four names, our lives can be changed. We can find wisdom and direction; divine power to act on our behalf; a reliable, protective, and providing father; and not just a person of peace, but a prince of peace!

It's easy to think a supernatural event would endow us with great faith.
Maybe. Maybe not.
Angelic encounters grew Mary and Joseph's faith, but left Zechariah still doubting and questioning.
Yet faith is required to please God -- not merely in his existence, but in his character. This is despite whether we get the outcomes we desire or not.
Faith is hard. Unbelief is hard. We get to choose which hard we want. Both come at a cost.
We dive into the stories of Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, and Joseph and see how their faith journeys can impact our own. We see from Dallas Willard's The Divine Conspiracy how prayer is a practical and powerful way we nurture meaningful faith.

I had grand visions for commemorating Advent with my kids when they were growing up.
The candles had other ideas.
I envisioned a serene family gathering filled with reflection and togetherness. But this didn't materialize. Instead, Advent became a series of mishaps involving arguments, sibling rivalries, and a match-to-candle ratio that showed something serious was amiss.
But I share more here than relaying a family story. Rather, to encourage you to remember nurturing a child's faith is more like growing an apple tree than a radish. It requires time, care, and the understanding that immediate results are not always visible.
You don't measure impact by immediacy. You'll smile along as you hear how this truth got lived out in my attempts to celebrate Advent.

Many Christmas movies portray the season as one of hot chocolate, comfy slippers, and warm blankets. But the profound message of hope that Christmas brings, is a far grander and grittier story.
True hope is not merely about future outcomes but about experiencing God's goodness and strength in our everyday lives. A superficial understanding of hope can be dangerous, particularly if it invites complacency about our need for transformation.
By drawing on insights from Dallas Willard's work, The Divine Conspiracy, we see genuine change comes from a heartfelt desire for transformation, rather than just accumulating knowledge. We are reminded that hope is a sustaining force, capable of supporting us through both joyful and difficult times, and is essential for becoming the best versions of ourselves.

Nurturing gratefulness in kids isn't easy. But it's not impossible, either!
Cultivating a perspective of thankfulness isn't just about making your home life more pleasant -- although that's a good enough reason. But the connection between faith and gratitude is significant, and the cost of ingratitude is extraordinarily high. (See episode 133 for a deep dive into that lesson.)

The Old Testament book of Exodus includes a sobering story about the high cost of ingratitude. By default, we're at risk for repeating that mistake, but we can choose a different path.
We'll see the connection between gratitude and faith, thanksgiving and character. Drawing on Dallas Willard's work in The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life in God, we unpack five ways we can avoid the high cost of ingratitude.

Are you concerned about the increasing number of children who are walking away from the faith? What if part of this is due to a lack of understanding the full Gospel?
While beliefs and behaviors is important, we must also include desires in our spiritual journeys. Yet so much of our teaching has been a "gospel of sin management," where our desires are are either ignored or indulged.
We can foster a deeper faith relevant to all of life by engaging children in conversations about their desires and discussing what we really believe about God. Do we see him as joyful? Interesting? Interested in us?

"Christianity is not about rules, it's about relationship," is popular. But it's also misleading and can also be harmful.
Too much of Christian teaching has focused on behavior and beliefs and left out the third critical element: desires. We need an entirely new perspective because rules and relationship are not enemies. We do not need to choose between them.
We continue unpacking key elements from Dallas Willard's The Divine Conspiracy and discuss the gospel of sin management. How this tends to play out in one of two ways:
1) a big set of "right" beliefs + a big list of "right" behaviors; or
2) a small set of "right" beliefs + a small list of "right" behaviors.
Yet the answer isn't to meet in the middle and have a "medium" sized set of beliefs and behaviors. It is adopting an entirely new approach.

Identity theft is not only about stolen Social Security numbers or bank details. It begins with your innate desire to be seen as unique and significant.
This quest for significance can lead to a distorted sense of humility, where we equate being humble with playing small. Drawing from Dallas Willard's insights in The Divine Conspiracy, we discuss the importance of recognizing our God-given agency and the drive to count for good in the world is not rooted in sin but in being made in God's image.
Yet our identity can become stolen by false but seemingly "Christian" labels like "waiting for God" or "being faithful in the small things." These can be legitimate but they can also only appear legitimate while really stealing our identity.
Salvation is not the first step in God's plan to erase us but rather restore us!
Learn how your desire to matter is a foundational part of restoring a whole identity.

We're all part of a conspiracy. It's just a matter of which side.
Conspiracies are nothing new. They didn't start with the 2020 election, the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S., or the President John F. Kennedy's assassination.
There's a long history of conspiracies (or related theories) involving leaders.
Julius Caesar was assassinated because of a conspiratorial belief he was going to proclaim himself king. Saul hunted David for years because he was convinced David was conspiring to overthrow him.
But the greatest conspiracy of all? When evil tried to overthrow God. Although they were kicked out of heaven, evil didn't quit. They just moved to a different tactic and place. Hurting God's kids and turning them against Him on a planet called Earth.

Attitudes are like smells. You can’t force them to leave a room when they’re bad, but they can force you to walk out. When they’re good, you can’t make them stay, but you sure don’t want to leave.
One of the greatest mistakes parents make, often unintentionally, is placing more emphasis on the beliefs they want to instill in their children rather than the emotional and attitudinal environment they create at home. Yet this is one of the most shaping forces in a child's life, not just in childhood but adulthood.
Children learn not only from what they are told but also from the emotional atmosphere surrounding them, which will shape their expectations of relationships and interactions throughout their lives.
We need to be as thoughtful in evaluating the attitudes we bring -- and allow -- into our homes as our children's food, toys, media, friends, and activities. But how?
Learn 10 ways you can put attitudes in their right place. Help your children grow their security, identity, self-control, self-awareness, and relational skills by putting these ten techniques into practice.

Two weeks before a momentous election in the United States, I'm going political -- and Biblical.
Citizenship, for the Christian, is a responsibility to steward. We may feel like burying this "talent" in the ground because it's too hard to engage in the rough & tumble of political commerce. But it's not an option if we are to walk in faithfulness. As Christians, we are called to seek knowledge and wisdom actively in all areas of life. Understanding the tension between God's sovereignty and human free will is crucial for informed decision-making.
Although it wasn't planned this way, the wrap-up of the series on the Beatitudes is the perfect way to discuss this responsibility. Like all truths, balancing tensions is necessary.
We must live, not merely hear or mouth, the Beatitudes during this divisive season. We must remember the poverty of all people, mourn for the world's brokenness, and extend mercy, rather than simply seeking political victory.
We must ask ourselves hard questions such as: How much time is spent in God's compared to the news? Are we more involved in prayer or polls? Do we hunger more for righteousness or political victory?
F.W. Boreham's essay from My Christmas Book, is especially worth remembering! What matters more? Battles or babies? Politics or people?

The whimsical pushmi-pullyu's from Doctor Dolittle is a great metaphor for the internal struggles everyone faces in the human desire to be understood while also grappling with the fear of being truly known. We explore how this duality illustrates that while children yearn for connection and understanding, they may simultaneously resist it due to vulnerability concerns. We can -- and must -- embrace this complexity, advocating for intentional communication and efforts to deepen mutual understanding, even amid resistance.

I decided to become a drug addict while sitting in church in our regular pew, second row piano side. The same as Chonda Pierce!
Why? I needed a powerful testimony and growing up on a small Kansas farm didn't seem a likely path.
Nobody highlighted the compelling testimonies of "special speakers" who came through our church so kids would conclude the path to a powerful testimony was delving into a life of crime or addictions. But that's the conclusion I reached as a child. Fortunately, my brain matured, and I made better decisions.
But understanding the unintended consequences of our beliefs is necessary. Today's dive into the last Beatitude requires we tread carefully in what we teach -- directly and indirectly -- from these verses.
I attempt to do this as I emphasize the need for a respectful understanding of persecution, contrasting the experiences of believers in free societies with those facing genuine threats for their faith. This distinction is crucial as it underscores the importance of not trivializing the experiences of those who suffer deeply for their beliefs. I encourages you to adopt a nuanced perspective, acknowledging the harsh realities faced by many while also affirming that faithfulness is not synonymous with seeking out hardship.

Rest and recreation play a crucial role in developing humility and nurturing our character. We explore the profound connection between our need for rest and our overall well-being—physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.
Drawing from biblical principles, particularly the example set by God during creation, the episode highlights the importance of intentionally incorporating rest into our lives and the lives of our children. It underscores that rest is not laziness, but a vital practice that fosters resilience and creativity. By establishing healthy boundaries around rest, we can model and teach our children the significance of balancing activity with rejuvenation, ultimately preparing them for a thriving adult life.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" was -- and still is -- a revolutionary statement in two ways.
First, as part of the Beatitudes, this meant bringing people to peace with God. For centuries only priests had been entrusted with the role of being intermediaries between individuals and God. To entrust ordinary people with the call to help bring people into relationship with God was revolutionary. It's still Christ's call to us today.
Secondly, for anyone to be known as a "son of God" (which applied to both men and women), was radical. To be God's priest, king, prophet, or servant wasn't new. But his child? That signaled a transformative relationship of tremendous intimacy.
We are still able to have this close of a relationship with God and invite others to do the same!

Humans have a legitimate need for security -- food, clothing, and shelter. Jesus told his followers in the Sermon on the Mount God knows people need these things. Jesus said the "lilies of the field neither toil nor spin (work)," but he didn't add "neither should you."
Poverty can lead to one type of idolization; while prosperity can lead to another. How do we teach our children to be responsible in meeting the need for security for themselves and others, without going down either of the wrong paths?
That's we unpack today as we continue the series on teaching children to adopt the First and Second Great Commandments as their framework for life.

Sometimes one word can make all the difference!
For example, "may" in a legal document is entirely different from "shall." The first makes an action optional; the second makes it an obligation.
In Jesus's teachings in Matthew 5, two words (7 letters) in the 6th Beatitude make all the difference -- not only for the original audience but for us.
"Blessed are the pure" is an entirely different message than "Blessed are the pure -- in heart!"
In the original audience's culture, "purity" had descended to an exhaustive (and exhausting) list of "thou shalt's and thou shalt not's." Over the centuries people had added their own items to God's original list of moral, ceremonial (instructions on how to worship God), and civil (political) laws. These were easy to measure because they were external.
Yet these additions corrupted the entire purpose for the laws -- just as some of our laws today become more about serving a system than the people for whom the system was originally designed!
But "purity" based culture, wearing a "Christian" tag, is still around. It might be subtle to-do's that infer a higher Christian maturity -- like early morning "quiet time" ranking higher than mid-afternoon "quiet time." Or it may be stringent formulas like those taught during the height of the "purity-culture" movement which shared elements with cults.
The addition of Jesus' two words -- "in heart" -- made (and still make) all the difference! True purity always works from the inside out, not the reverse.
We unpack this truth today and look at how we can assess our own hearts.

Robert Frost's immortal poem, "The Road Not Taken" speaks to the impact our choices make. This ability is hardwired into us, yet we often struggle to teach our kids (or use ourselves) a framework for how to make good choices.
Today's episode unpacks the A-LASO method.
A--Appreciate the ability to chose. This perspective helps move us into a posture of humility and stewardship.
L -- Listen to voices which honor God. This is especially critical in a time where technology has made millions of voices accessible to our kids.
A -- Ask God. How differently the world would be if Eve had said, "Mr. Serpent, I'm going to ask God about what you're saying before I try that fruit."
S -- Speak into other people's lives about the choices they're making. There's a difference between sticking our nose where it doesn't belong and remaining quiet because of fear of ridicule or abandonment or conflict.
O -- Obey. Even when it's not clear why it matters.

Remember the song lyrics, "What the world needs now is love, sweet love?"
It's as true now as then, even though what "love" looks like is still not universally agreed on.
One trait, however, that tends to be recognized -- even if not practiced -- is mercy.
This is one of the characteristics that Jesus declared marked people who lived in the kingdom of God. Mercy is not merely emotion; nor is it automatically marked by action. It is both the experience of deeply feeling someone else's need and then doing something about it.
Yet "compassion fatigue" presents a legitimate problem. How can a person avoid this modern dilemma while retaining and even growing a heart of mercy?
Is mercy simply "letting someone off the hook?"
Does mercy restore trust?
Does mercy oppose justice?
We unpack the 5th "Beatitude" and discover the power of mercy in stories ranging from Jesus' parables to Guy de Maupassant's masterpiece, "The Necklace."

The gospel is meant to be "earthy." It's not about how to "survive" earth until finally making it to heaven. Jesus taught the "Kingdom of Heaven" was about life starting here on earth.
Teaching kids how to love God includes the practical, "earthy" things like honoring the places they inhabit and use. It's about seeing their purposes as being greater than self-interest and making a living.
Place and purpose have a deep connection that goes back to the Garden of Eden -- before sin ever happened.
Learn why teaching things like "Clean your room" isn't just about making your life easier. In the smallest of ways our requirements can build our children's character and enable them to be able to fulfill the First Great Commandment!

So when Jesus says, "This is what leads to a fulfilled life," it's worth our attention!
Today we dive into the 4th Beatitude. We see how a hunger and thirst for God's approval is the first part of seeking His righteousness (right-standing). We discover how showing up in the world and doing good flows from that righteousness. We also see how our spiritual appetite is cultivated just like our physical hungers and thirsts.
We also see how "being fulfilled" isn't a promise of a future objective but a promise for the here and now in the nitty-gritty of life.

Meekness is a wonderful concept! But it can be hard (at least for me) to practice at certain places -- like the Department of Motor Vehicles!

Ever said anything your kids considered shocking? If so, you may be in good company!
In the New Testament book of James, he writes shocking words addressing the issue Christians were fighting about. (Sadly, Christians fighting over theology isn't new!) Back then it was faith vs. works, or, put another way, "who vs. do."
As we teach our kids the importance of a life centered on the two Great Commandments, developing "do" skills is part of this. A right belief isn't enough -- which James addresses with a shocking statement! Character that doesn't show up with "do-ing" isn't real character.

It's the same with our faith.
Is Christianity a tyrannical boss? One that's good in emergencies but has little value in the day-to-day? Or one that has the desire and wisdom necessary for your success?

How would you answer the question, "Who is your child?" beyond giving their name? Would it be a list of their interests or accomplishments?
What if we defined who-ness by both personality and character traits? Yet even that is a difficult distinction!
Yet difficult isn't impossible. It takes work to help transform our children's "who" capacities into abilities. Yet it's one of our greatest callings as parents. Where to begin?
Galatians 5:22, the famous list of the "fruits of the Spirit" is a great starting place to develop character. Yet intentionality is required. After all, desire alone doesn't build character for any of us.

Worship can seem like it’s purpose is to stroke God’s ego. Is that its purpose?
Why does God place such a high priority on worship?
Fascinatingly, scientific research shows benefits to worship – especially corporate singing. It builds trust, creates community, reduces isolation, and affirms a positive sense of belonging and self. Worship is for our benefit – not God’s!
Worship re-centers us and helps us align with the truth we are not God but we have an intrinsic value because we are made in His image.
When Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem and the surrounding areas gather to dedicate Jerusalem’s newly-restored walls, they prioritize worship – especially through corporate singing!
We can take a cue from their example in our lives as individuals and in our churches. “Music wars” do not have to divide people; music can be the most community-building activities we engage in. Church worship is the last place in the U.S. where people of all stripes can regularly gather and sing together.
Use Nehemiah’s example and scientific research to learn why community worship must be preserved and practiced.

Children's stories about relationships don't prepare us well for life. They tend to two extremes: 1) The Cinderella ending -- "happily ever after" or 2) The Humpty Dumpty ending -- "unrepairable."
Yet how does a person go about restoring, or being open to restoration, when there's been a serious relational breakdown?
The people in ancient Israel model this beautifully in the Old Testament story of Nehemiah, chapters 9-10.
Discover the first two of five steps necessary for relational restoration -- whether in our relationship with God or people.

Should you reward your child’s obedience?
Always? Sometimes? Never?
Why or why not?
Is the statement, “Delayed obedience is disobedience” true?
How do you walk the line between the following two truths?
Expecting obedience for obedience’s sake is a right expectation.
Obedience is worth rewarding.

Given normal conditions, all children laugh and play. No one has to teach them these traits. Why? Perhaps joy is hard-wired into us because it's an empowering force.
Education and activities shape our children's development. Just as significantly is the environment they grow up in. If it's one of joy, this will make them stronger and more resilient. If joy is more of an exception than the norm (or non-existent), children will pay a cost not only as kids but as adults.
Intentionally cultivating an environment of joy is like supplying oxygen to your child -- and perhaps to them adopting your faith!

Let's be honest. "Family Bible study" can provoke more guilt than enthusiasm. It's something we know we "should" do and keep meaning to "get around to." Yet another week (year?) can go by and all we've accomplished is adding more items to our "parenting failures" list.

We hear a lot about the need to “slow down,” “take a break,” and make time for “self-care.” That’s all good. But there are times when taking a break is the last thing we should do.
It may seem counterintuitive, but it may be when we're fatigued that we shouldn't take a break! Why?
Because it may make all the difference for us -- and others -- for our future.
Learn when following the example of the people who had just spent two months engaged in physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding work is the best course of action. As we unpack Nehemiah 8, we'll see:

Does the idea of discovering “God’s will” confuse, terrify, bore, or excite you? Is there even such a thing as divine direction? If so, how can we recognize it?
Seven principles from the example of Nehemiah enable us to make good judgments about whether we’re hearing God’s divine direction, our own desires masquerading as God’s will, or something else.
I unpack:
•Hearing accurately is a learned skill
•Taking circumstances outside our control into account
•Having a lifestyle of integrity and obedience
•Outcome for others includes leading to obedience and blessing
•Focusing on our responsibility, not others
•Tied to a lifestyle of seeking God
•It’s not for every decision we make
Just because someone says, “God said …” doesn’t make it so. Grow your discernment in hearing, recognizing, and applying God’s divine direction.

Who is the first group of people you would employ after an organization-wide overhaul?
Musicians probably isn't your answer. But that's exactly who Nehemiah prioritized after Jerusalem's walls were rebuilt and gates were installed.
Singers and priests led worship and interceded on behalf of others. There's something about worship and intercession that helps keep us grounded in our God-given identity and purpose and keeps us from becoming self-absorbed.
We also see our highest calling is not to impressiveness but faithfulness and how it's necessary to have people -- not just practices and technology -- to guard us.

Let's be honest.
Our success isn't always met with cheers -- especially from those closest to us.
Let's be courageously honest and admit our initial response to other people's success may not always be applause, either. Why?
Self-esteem.
In whatever area of insecurity, loss, disappointment, or pain we have, we're tempted to resent more than respect someone else's success in that area.
We can learn from Nehemiah's experience. He led a team that pulled off an astounding project -- only to be met with jeers and threats. We can follow his example, however, and not be dismayed by this.
We can also learn not to follow his enemies' example. Instead, we can become people who live with an abundance mentality. This requires actively taking three steps:
Identify why we feel threatened or envious or pained by someone else’s success.
Align our thoughts with what’s true about ourself and someone else.
Act in alignment with that truth.
Over time when we walk this out, we will become people of grace and gratitude, greater security, and better positioned to receive God's blessings with thankfulness and humility. If not, we will become ungracious, closed, and embittered.

Fear is a four-letter word for a reason.
It’s one of the most destructive forces on the planet. It’s also one of the most subtle.
But conquering it requires us to say its name. We call it what it is.
The difficulty is fear doesn’t always show up clothed in a monster outfit. Sometimes it dresses like our best friend and invites us to dinner.
In today’s episode we see:
•Opponents don’t give up
•Just because someone changes methods doesn’t mean they’ve changed motives
•Differences between overt and covert fears

Just because a leader is "effective" doesn't make them superb.
History shows "effective" tyrants can harmful tyrants.
What makes the difference between a superb leader or a harmful tyrant?
We'll examine six principles for distinguishing the difference. Whether the leader is you or someone else, in a paid position, volunteer capacity, or role within your family.
You'll see the importance in noticing the difference in asking, "What can I get" to "What do I need?" You'll be observant about whether someone is aware or disinterested in what it's like to be the "boots on the ground." You'll spot the red flag when transparency has to be requested or demanded.

All of parenting (and life) is lived in a state of tension.

How does a parent raise kids prepared for the real world without creating paranoia? It's difficult -- especially when this includes teaching kids to recognize that even people they know might be manipulative, abusive, or exploitative. It's not always strangers or people "out there."

One of the best ways to keep kids safe is by making them strong and savvy. Be encouraged and equipped to do just that.

What possible connection could Emily Dickinson and Nehemiah have?
You might be surprised!
In today’s episode, you’ll see how the ancient leader Nehemiah employed three leadership practices just as relevant today as 2,500 years ago.
Distinguish between practices that are appropriate for an emergency or a season but aren’t sustainable in the long run. Have an exit strategy for temporary solutions.
Call people to do hard things even when it seems way outside of their skill set. As Dickinson wrote, “We never know how high we are, Till we are asked to rise.” Good leaders know how to call and equip people to rise to occasions greater than they believe is possible.
Be willing to put up with some “stink” when it’s necessary to achieve worthy goals.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" isn't a wise adage. It's the comeback of someone who’s been hurt by words but doesn't want to let it show.
Words wound or heal. They tear apart or bring together. They strengthen or destroy.
The first 14 verses of Nehemiah 4 are an opportunity to teach (and re-teach and re-teach) kids these truths:
Following God and achieving success will make you a target of resistance and maybe even ridicule.
Words have a powerful impact, whether they are typed, heard, or spoken.
God calls us to both prayer and action.
There’s a time to take a situation only to God, and there’s a time to speak up and act on behalf of yourself and those being impacted by harmful words.
Teaching about words isn’t a “one & done” activity. Rather, it’s an ongoing task. No matter how much kids may roll their eyes or say, “Yeah, yeah, yeah,” wise parents continue to teach about this critical topic. The power of words – whether those said or heard, texted or read – can’t be overstated, especially with today’s technology. It’s crucial we teach children to be mindful of the words they are sending into the world and those they are absorbing.

Success doesn’t always make you a star. Sometimes it makes you a target.
That’s what happens to Nehemiah and the Jews who are at work rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls. In the 4th chapter, verses 1-14, we see these truths:
1.Accomplishments will make you a target.
2.Never underestimate what a unified body of people can accomplish.
3.Anticipate resistance to increase in intensity the more you achieve.
4.Understand resistance comes from both internal and external sources.
5.Prayer is not a substitute for action.

Anything in shambles in your home? Maybe it feels like “everything?”
Or maybe dinnertime is a constant state of chaos.
The longer something is in a state of disarray, the more “normal” it becomes. But how do you change it?
First, recognize it takes a while to see a problem has become a pattern. Ditch the guilt for not recognizing an ongoing problem in the making the first time it occurs!
Then apply four principles to help transform chaos into calm.
Cast a vision
Make an emotional appeal
Address fears
Have a strategy that invites action

You can raise empowered-mindset kids by teaching them three practices modeled by Nehemiah 2,500 years ago. If they don’t learn these when they’re young, they’ll pay a cost when they’re adults.
See why it’s important to:
Require they have an area of life they need someone else’s help – even when they don’t think they need it.
Role-play to teach effective communication when you need or want someone else’s cooperation. This practice can start when they’re young and continue through adulthood.
Prepare for opposition when setting out to accomplish a task.

When you want to change the status quo, three practices are critical. Nehemiah modeled these, and they’re as relevant today as 2,500 years ago. Whether you desire change in a personal relationship or an organization, success depends on three practices.
Preparing for conversations with those whose approval, support, or assistance you need.
Accepting help.
Preparing for resistance.
More people are committed to keeping the status quo intact than changing it. Don’t expect everyone to be happy when you want to help others.
Everyone is not going to be your cheerleader when you set out to accomplish what God puts in your heart.

Real leaders always begin by leading themselves.
Power only needs a position. Leadership requires position, capacity, and skill.
The Old Testament story of Nehemiah is a gold mine of leadership practices and
principles!
In the first chapter Nehemiah models two leadership practices: initiative and prayer.
Nehemiah’s initiative leads to empathy, and his empathy leads to action.
Genuine empathy always leads to action. If it’s only an emotion, it’s not empathy!

Ever played a mystery game based on figuring out clues?
Ever had someone say your name in "that" way?
Ever heard, "Three strikes! You're out!?"
Three of Jesus' followers could tell stories about these scenarios! Their experiences can empower and transform us as we encounter hard times in our lives.
A folded piece of cloth gave John a divine clue to the whereabouts of Jesus' body after his death and burial.
A "stranger" answering her question with her name sent Mary Magdalene running to deliver a message of hope as meaningful to us today as the original listeners.
A simple question posed three times, "Do you love me," initially gave Peter grief, then the understanding his failure hadn't cancelled his calling.
Hope. It was the common factor in each of these encounters. It's what we desperately need today. The last two chapters in John's gospel is a message of hope for all who grieve and all who doubt.

What was Jesus’ #1 reason for coming to the world as the God-Man?
We don’t have to guess at this answer because Jesus stated it plainly. Not to the religious leaders. Not even to his disciples. But to a Roman politician. Pilate, to be exact.
Jesus answered Pilate’s infamous query, “What is truth?” by saying, “This is the reason I have come into the world: to bear witness to the truth.”
As followers of Christ, this is to be our purpose as well.
But fear – the wrong kind – has a complicated relationship with truth and too often tempts us to become truth beaters rather than truth bearers. And most often in subtle ways.
Learn more about how to live in this aspect of life’s great tension as we continue unpacking John’s gospel, chapters 18-19.

Everyone in Jesus’ arrest, trial, and execution by crucifixion was motivated, at least in part, by fear. Everyone, that is, except Jesus.
Fear is a powerful driver of human behavior, even when it masquerades as concern for others.
One fear or another will dominate every person’s life: a holy fear that leads towards God or an unholy fear that drives away from God.
It’s not always easy to discern the difference.
It’s one thing to feel fearful: it’s another to live fearful.
John 18-19 helps us see:
the impact of being motivated by an unholy fear
how betrayers seek to bring others into their camp
how we can face betrayal like Christ did
that a sudden and unexpected change in circumstances can make us vulnerable to acting out of fear
the temptation for leaders to hide self-serving actions under the cloak of caring about others

Mike Tyson once answered a reporter’s question about an upcoming bout with a rival by saying, “Everybody’s got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”
That sums up Jesus’ disciples experience on the night of their last Passover together.
Jesus knew what was coming. They had no clue.
They probably had plans. For later that night. For the next day. Likely they had a plan for the rest of their life.
And then they got punched in the mouth. And the gut.
It could have been a knock-out blow.
And they initially fell apart, but they came back and followed Jesus’ last words.
Abide.
Bear fruit.
Love.
Over and over, these were Jesus’ last instructions. Abide in Him. Bear fruit. Love Him. Love one another.
The sum of the Christian life in four words: Abide. Bear fruit. Love.
We need this message today because sooner or later, life punches everyone in the mouth – and the gut. While we may be knocked to our knees, we don’t have to be knocked out.

Be honest. There's at least one person you would like to "uninvite" to Thanksgiving -- if not all events you'll ever attend. They make giving thanks a spiritual discipline!
(Okay, maybe that's just me. I'm still a work in progress.)
It's easy to give thanks when we're comfortable and things are going our way. Not so much when we're called upon to do things we don't want to do -- and might even be desperate to get away from.
There's a guy in the Bible like that. He struggled with gratitude. And to be fair, I can see why on this particular mission God gives him.
Jonah isn't probably the top Bible character you'd associate with Thanksgiving, but his story is worth visiting. Not just for what it can teach us as we (in the United States) celebrate this holiday but for every day of the year. Including Leap year!

Have you ever known the pain of betrayal by a close friend? If you’re honest (which, of course, you are), did you want to let everyone in your circle know about the betrayal?
It’s astounding how Jesus doesn’t do that when he knows Judas is going to betray him. What’s even more amazing is Jesus makes no last-minute effort to stop Judas from what he was going to do!
As we continue to look to the gospel of John for how we can live wisely and fully engaged, we see in chapters 13-14 these significant discoveries:
Jesus wasn’t thrown off course by Judas’ betrayal. When we experience betrayal, we also don’t have to be knocked out of commission. Neither do we have to call it to everyone’s attention in the moment. Sooner or later, the truth has a way of coming out – just as it did with Judas.
Jesus modeled the necessity of sometimes giving people warnings about their direction. But the point isn’t to shame or condemn but to let them know we’re here to keep loving them even when they fail.
Actions do speaker louder than words. Jesus makes it clear love for him results in doing what he says we should and not doing what he says is wrong.
Unity with those who share our love for Christ is our #1 life purpose. Oh, so easy to say; so hard to live!
Understanding our origin and knowing our destination empowers us to live out our callings on earth. Not just origin in the “evolution vs. creation” since, but origin as in how we grew up. This isn’t an exercise in parent-shaming but in accepting the humility none of us are self-made people.

What does Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s famous expression that when God calls a person, He says “Come and die!” mean in everyday life?
Is “dying to ourselves” a different way of expressing God’s goal is to erase us?
We investigate this in today’s episode as we wrap up John 12. In addition, we see:
It’s fascinating to see what Jesus doesn’t do as he prepares to wrap up his time on earth in human form.

How does a person measure real change in themselves or someone else?
What’s the point of Bible prophecy?
We dive into both of those topics from the gospel of John. Yep, in that book Jesus displays
the purpose of Biblical prophecy – of telling it forward.
We also get savvy about measuring behavioral patterns to assess whether there’s stagnation or genuine growth occurring in ourselves and others. No easy task, especially when legitimate concerns get mixed in with selfish motives.
Don’t miss out on a brand new resource to help renew a weary, anxious heart! Weariness and anxiety don’t wait for invitations. They come find us and, if we’re not diligent, will move right on in and take up permanent residence. You don’t have to take that sitting down!

I doubt when Mary and Martha saw Jesus raise their beloved brother from the dead they anticipated Lazarus would soon be targeted for assassination. Yet that’s what happens. One of the reasons we must identify and confront right & wrong is because of its eventual outcome, not just its immediate impact in a person or society. I doubt when Jesus performed the miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding that if you had said to the religious leaders, “You’re going to be plotting an assassination against this man someday,” that they would have believed you. But that’s exactly where their refusal to lead a genuinely “examined” life led them.
In John 12:1-9, we see:
Worship and gratitude might make you a target of criticism from those who are close to you.
Receiving God's divine intervention (a miracle) might make you a target of outrage from those who are opposed to the status quo and Jesus’ presence making a real difference in your life and others.
Goodness and evil are insatiable. They have unending appetites. Goodness always wants to bless more, love more, care more. Evil always wants to enslave more, blind more, destroy more, deceive more. That’s one reason we must choose a life of intentionality and close relationships with godly people who really know us and are invited to speak into our lives. It’s another reason we must not only be “hearers” of the Word but “doers” so we do not deceive ourselves.

Martha is so relatable! One minute she’s telling Jesus she knows he is the Christ, the Son of God. The next, she’s informing him that if they roll the stone away from Lazarus’ tomb, there’s going to be an odor.
Can you relate to the tension of believing in God and then questioning his wisdom when
he asks you to do something? I can!
Along with exploring this topic, we see that the linen strips of cloth which still bound Lazarus after being resurrected symbolizes we can experience God’s salvation and still need others to help free us from issues which prevent us from entering fully into life.
And while you’d think bringing someone back from the dead would only gain a response of “Hallelujah!” from the witnesses, it doesn’t. Some people come to belief; others run to tattle. Leaders who prioritize protecting their position will not only miss out on God’s goodness, but they’ll lead others astray as well.

John 11 is perhaps most famously known for containing the shortest verse in the Bible: “Jesus wept.” Yet why was he crying? Sure, Lazarus had died, but Jesus knew he was getting ready to bring him back from the dead.
Why waste time weeping?
Nine verses in this chapter reveal powerful truths such as the ones we unpack in this episode:
We are never rebuked for coming to Jesus with our “Why?” and disappointment.
Even though God knows our pain is momentary, He still chooses to be present with us in the moment. He doesn’t rush us out of it. He enters into it.
God’s work, even His great miracles, will soften some hearts and harden others.
Listen and discover this chapter is worth becoming one of the most well-known and not
because it contains the Bible’s shortest verse but some of its most comforting truths.

How would you like to be known by only one event in your life? Not me!
Unfortunately, that's often what happens to Martha of "Mary & Martha" Biblical fame. Mary gets applauded because she's prioritizing listening and Martha is chided because she's concentrating on serving. But what about the other Mary & Martha stories?
In John 11 we see a Martha worthy of our respect and emulation. The situation is dire: Lazarus, Martha & Mary's dear brother, has died. Both women are grieving -- and likely incredibly concerned about how this is going to upend their world. Why? You'll have to listen to find out!
In today's episode we unpack three key lessons from John 10:1-27.

Kenny Rogers' song, "The Gambler," included these lines:
"You gotta' know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away. Know when to run."
You may be wondering what that has to do with John 10, but hold on. It's relevant!
Jesus demonstrates the necessity of discernment in dealing with people. He shows sometimes you stay and respond to people's questions (and accusations). Sometimes you remove yourself entirely from a situation.
Sometimes we better serve the work of God when we leave the places of power and prestige and go to the humbler places -- and people.

Thieves and wolves are coming for you.
Maybe not the kind with masks and fangs, but those who are out to steal you (and your children's) innocence, virtue, reputation, and opportunities. How can you be on guard to recognize and defeat these foes?
In John 10, Jesus identifies himself as the Door to the sheepfold and the Good Shepherd. A door provides safety and filters who gets access to the sheep. A shepherd is invested in protecting and providing for the sheep -- even at risk to his own life.
Yet speaking these words of truth (again) brought divisiveness. Part of Jesus' response was check my words against my actions. One of the most important truths we need to apply in life is that actions always reveal the truth more than words alone. Right-living folks welcome examination between words and deeds as Jesus (again) demonstrates.

What's the one item you possess no one can steal?
Your story.
Others may refute, ignore, or devalue it, but no one can steal your story.
In our concluding look at the blind man's healing in John 9, we see the power of sharing your story -- and the cost. Others can only hear your story through their filter, and if their filter is jealousy, hate, contempt, or fear, don't expect your story to matter. It may even get you cast out.

You'd think everyone would have cheered. Hugged the man and given praise to God.
Nope. Nada. Didn't happen.
Healed after spending his life blind from birth, instead the man experiences division, interrogation, disbelief, and rejection. Even the man's family kinda' throws him under the bus.
The same happens today when people experience a significant transformation or receive a miracle from God.
We unpack this and more as we continue looking at John 9 and one of the Gospel's most dramatic, poignant, funny, sobering, and enlightening miracles.

Jesus had no formula for healing. He spoke. He touched people. He prayed over them. He mixed dirt with his spit and spread it on their eyes.
Wait, what?!
What would you be willing to endure to receive healing? To gain clarity? A new perspective? How about mud in your eyes?
We dive into the story of the man blind from birth who received his sight through two choices: a) the humility to get spit & dirt spread over his eyes; b) the willingness to follow Jesus' instructions when there was no promise of reward attached.
From John chapter 9 we also unpack the faulty and dangerous beliefs linking disabilities to divine retribution.

Why? Because you have an impact that is immeasurable, eternal, and irreplaceable.
Why did God place such a premium on feasts, festivals, and commemorations? By the time Jesus lived on earth, the Jewish calendar didn't have more than three months lapse before there was another sacred event to participate in. Why?
Remembering yesterdays makes a difference in how we live today -- or at least it should. God knew his people needed to remember his faithfulness, provision, love, and care. Not just in some vague, generic way, but in recalling and recounting specific times in the nation's history when God showed himself to be for them. When he revealed he was the one and only true God, more powerful and more loving than all the other false "gods" people had constructed.

Jesus could make some weird statements. Especially if taken at face value. Start talking about "eating my flesh" and "drinking my blood," and that can raise some eyebrows.
So why did Jesus make these statements?
To separate the "deep thinkers" from the "surface thinkers."
Those who came to Jesus to learn from him were required to think deeply while those who were after what he could do for them were content to remain surface thinkers.
His example shows us about our own approach to him and how we can be discerning about the people in our lives.
Today's episode shares seven key insights about our relationship with God and others.

No stories. Just straight talk, repeatedly emphasizing a couple of key points. It's rare that Jesus spoke for long in this style. So when he did, it's worth paying extra attention.
In the last almost 30 verses in the Gospel of John, chapter 5, Jesus emphasizes these crucial truths:
He also points out that those who didn't believe what he said about himself didn't believe because they were seeking others' approval and recognition instead of God's. Ouch.
After this discourse, Jesus goes to a different area where a crowd of 5,000 people show up -- having failed to bring a meal with them. What's up with that poor preparation?
Rather than chiding them for their lack of foresight, Jesus performs an amazing miracle. But this is about a lot more than meeting an immediate physical need -- although that's important. In this we can also see:
God can feed a lot of people with our small offering. But to do this we have to be willing to let go of what we have and be left empty handed -- temporarily.
We have to watch God break apart what we think is going to fill us.
We need to value the fragments left over. Goes doesn't want anything wasted -- and this goes for far more than food!

Why did Jesus ask the man who had been an invalid for 38 years, "Do you want to be well?" I mean, isn't the answer obvious?
Not necessarily.
Pain can have a payoff. This must be understood in the correct context and never applied with a judgmental, condemning attitude. It's an insight to be used primarily in self-assessment ("Learn yourself") and not diagnosing others (except in rare circumstances and with the greatest of compassion and wisdom).
Sometimes Jesus asked or said strange things in situations involving healing.
We cover two of these in today's episode. An invalid of 38 years and an official's son.
Both pack powerful lessons for us!

Nicodemus seeks to visit with Jesus at night, likely because he wanted a private conversation away from the crowds. Was it because he was embarrassed? Or he thought it was the only time to catch Jesus alone? Scripture isn't clear.
But their conversation displays Jesus' kindness and grace.

What does Nick's nocturnal wanderings have to do with us?

If he was looking to curry favor with the rich and powerful, this wasn't the way to go about it!
It's easy to read the story of Jesus driving people out of the Temple and simultaneously think "Hooray!" and "What does this have to do with me?" Because the message isn't to take a course in making and using whips.
It is, however, a vivid reminder of our call to fight injustice, especially when people are being kept from following God with their whole heart.
The temple was a place for people to draw closer to God, and the whole business of exchanging currency and selling sacrifices had replaced this sacred responsibility. Instead, leaders were using God's commands to abuse his people. Sound familiar?
Learn why this story of Jesus -- which seldom makes it onto posters in children's Sunday School rooms -- is absolutely relevant to us today.

Did you know the first chapter of the Gospel of John records nine of history's most powerful words? Yep! Not only does this account begin with the same three words as the first book in the Bible -- "In the beginning" -- but John wrote nine words which changed everything.
"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us."
God didn't need to know what it was like to be human. We needed to know God cared enough to walk among us.
The power of empathy, the power of words, and the power of being light-bearers, is packed into the opening verses of this non-synoptic Gospel.

Remember, my friend, you have an impact that is immeasurable, eternal, and irreplaceable.
What do you say when someone cuts you off in traffic? "They're an idiot" or "They didn't see me."
What's the language you use when your toddler resists putting on their "park" shoes because they want to wear their "dress-up" pair? They're "throwing a tantrum" or "they're upset"?
What do you say when your spouse disagrees with the budget you want set aside for vacation?
The stories you tell yourself dozens (hundreds? thousands?) of times in everyday situations will shape your life more than anything else.
Why? Because what you tell yourself about yourself and others shapes your character more than anything else.
When Jesus was taken to Pilate by the religious leaders, they didn't just ask for a death warrant. They didn't just want him executed. This could have happened by stoning. They wanted him to suffer in tremendous agony. How did they get to this place? The stories they had been telling themselves for 3 1/2 years about Jesus.
Today we'll connect Romans 12:2 -- "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind" with the trial and crucifixion of Christ -- not just to check off another Bible passage, but to be equipped to soberly assess the stories we're telling ourselves.

While sneaking off to barley threshing floors and exchanging sandals isn't likely to be a part of too many engagement stories today, there's much to be said about how to select a spouse in the story of Ruth and Boaz.
Why did they choose one another? Boaz wasn't desperate, and Ruth could certainly have wooed younger men. So what attracted them to each other?
Turns out their story showcases characteristics that are just as important today as they were then.
We wrap up this story titled "Ruth" in the Bible with the woman who opened the book -- Naomi. No embittered old soul, she has quite the group of friends cheering for her. Discover why!

Remember, my friend, you have an impact that is immeasurable, eternal, and irreplaceable.
Long before Jane Austen's Emma Woodhouse, there was Naomi.
But this is no 19th century England with ladies in ball gowns and men in top hats. This is a millennium before Christ, and the couple is more akin to Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester than Austen's Mr. Darcy and Ms. Bennett. Yet this Biblical story is a marvelous story unveiling the heart's innate desire and capacity to give and receive love.
And we can see Naomi's got some romance savvy in her! Maybe she's a foreshadowing of Austen's Emma!
But this isn't a fairy tale. This is real love shown by three people in three unique ways.
Naomi loves by looking out for others in spite of her own suffering. She uses her understanding of men on Ruth's behalf.
Ruth loves by respecting Naomi and Boaz, even proposing in private!
Boaz loves through kindness, integrity, and generosity.
This story will cheer your heart, whether you relate most to Ruth, Naomi, or Boaz.

What do you think the Biblical character, Ruth, would wear today?
I think Chapter 2 Ruth would wear jeans, a denim work shirt, and cowgirl boots. Maybe even a straw hat or baseball cap. After all, you don't work in grain fields in flowing prairie dresses!
Why does this matter? It's easy to romanticize Biblical stories, and sometimes reimagining them in today's setting helps us see the life lessons for our situations. Ruth is impoverished, female, a foreigner, and a widow. Four strikes against her in those times.
Yet she demonstrates initiative, hard work, and a generous spirit in spite of her socio-economic standing. Sounds like somebody who would wear cowgirl boots to me! (The kind you'd use to muck out the stalls, not pull on to shine on the dance floor.)
We also see Naomi's choices to live open-handed, open to healing, and open-hearted. Not to mention God's impeccable timing!

Have you ever yelled "Why?" into the unresponsive cosmos?
It's humankind's universal response to tragedy. "Why?!"
The question erupts from fractured souls every day, only to be met with silence.
On the cross of crucifixion, one of the most excruciating forms of death ever devised by man, the God-Man, Jesus, screamed this into the air. Not because God had turned his back on his beloved son. Nothing in Scripture supports that idea. Everything in Scripture opposes that belief.
Rather, God remained silent because silence is one of the bloodiest battle fields in the war between good and evil. It is on this battle field we wield the most powerful force God gave us -- the ability to choose.
Mature courageous faith only comes after it has fought "Why?" on the field of silence.
Today's episode is a departure from the normal style. After a brief introduction, there's a story penned during one of my own agonizing times of wailing, "Why?"
May you find strength in your own times of "Why," to make the same choice modeled by Jesus.

It's easy in the Biblical book of Ruth to be so focused on the headline character (Ruth) that Naomi's story gets lost. But she has powerful lessons for us!
Grit. Authenticity. Courage. Grief. Self-less. And entirely captivating!
When she returns home and hears, "Naomi, is that you?", her answer can be quick to dismiss. But dig deeper and she models a principle we desperately need to practice in life. I wonder if we followed her lead whether our churches would empty -- or overflow.
In today's episode lean in and take a fresh look at this familiar story!

Whoever started writing stories with the "and they lived happily ever after" ending might have read the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel. Why? They were desperate for a happy ending after reading this book!
Eli's story ends with the death of his sons, capture of the Ark of the Covenant, and his death by broken neck.
Samuel ends well as a faithful prophet, but his grown sons don't follow in his footsteps of faithfulness to God. After he dies, he has to come back and give one last prophetic word of doom!
Abigail's story may be the closest to a fairy tale, but let's not forget, while she becomes David's wife, he is a polygamist!
Saul and his sons die in battle and have their corpses mutilated before being retrieved and given a proper funeral by heroic men.
David's on the run for years and 1 Samuel ends with his army retrieving all the wives and children and property the Amalekites had captured while David's band was off trying to fight -- against their own people!
The Bible tells the whole story, not just the beautiful and fun parts. Protagonists and antagonists alike are complex and complicated.
As we wrap up our study of 1 Samuel, we'll look at

Don't you hate it when someone apologizes and you're not entirely sure it's genuine? How do you respond? Be "gracious" and hope for the best? Be "smart" and believe the worst?
David's midnight run into Saul's sleeping camp gives us some clues. Saul admits he is wrong. He even goes further and invites David back home. Why doesn't David go?
Learn key points about how to assess the difference between apologies and repentance and the critical distinction between forgiveness and restoration.
David, however, isn't without his own issues. He demonstrates how vulnerability brought on by dealing with the same problem for a long, long time can make us susceptible to taking matters into our own hands...with deadly results.

Abigail marries David. They ride off into the sunset. They have children together.
That's usually the way the story is presented. But skipping over Abigail's first marriage to Nabal deprives people of valuable lessons about the purpose of marriage, boundaries, and how a person's responsibilities as a human aren't eliminated in the name of unity, leadership, or submission.
Also, in today's episode you'll also see how fear and insecurity continue to drive Saul further away from fulfilling God's plans for him. Something we can learn from his mistakes and don't have to repeat.

Ever feel like you're losing your mind? Don't know which way to turn? You may not be in a good place, but you are in great company! David, as in "man after God's own heart," is in that spot in the 21st chapter of 1 Samuel. However, he doesn't take time to pray and seek God's direction.
He runs -- smack into trouble. The result is he's humiliated and endangers others. That's what fear always pushes us towards. Learn from David's mistakes and his successes so you can recognize when fatigue and fear are trying to push you over the (proverbial) cliff.
