Our world is a fear-inducing place - and sometimes, that can seem overwhelming. Yet Jesus told his followers - and us - to not fear, but instead to invest in the kingdom of God and be ready for whatever Christ asks us to do.
In this week's message, Pastor Adam revisits one of the core commands of Jesus - to seek God's kingdom first - and explores how this frees us from the worry and anxiety that is part of how life operates far too often.
Sometimes, Jesus addressed needs in the Gospels that are strange or unknown to us - but not in this passage. Here, Jesus tells the story of a rich man who has received a windfall, an unlooked-for blessing, and plots to increase his own comfort and ease. That path is not the path of life, Jesus says; rather, he encourages all who hear his words to think of those in need and share what God has blessed them with at every opportunity, because nothing that we have been given is ours to own.

In John 6, we find that Jesus was expecting that there might be someone in the crowd that day that wanted to join him and his disciples in the work of the kingdom - because the way of Jesus is about partnership.

As we continue pondering what it means to carry the fire of God's Spirit, we hear the story of the Antioch church and the revolutionary ways they carried the fire - together.
It is so easy to become siloed in our world - to see the world only through the eyes of our own experience and connect with people who are like us. Yet the Gospel tells us that God loves everyone, and the church is to move out of the silos the world tries to put us in and into the joyful reality of a community of believers across all dividing lines. This is a hard lesson to learn, though - even Peter needed divine help to live into God's vision for the church and the kingdom of God.
Carrying the Spirit's fire will often mean we care for and help those who are hurting, grieving, or suffering. Peter showed how the early church did this in the stories of Aeneas and Tabitha.
We continue to ponder how we are called to carry the fire of God's Spirit with the story of Phillip and the Ethiopian eunuch, from Acts 8:26-40. Pastor Adam helps us ponder if there is anyone who we don't think "fits in," and whether or not we can say "no" to someone seeking God when Jesus has said "yes."

As we continue our Lenten journey along the path of covenant, we encounter a strange story with fiery serpents and a bronze snake on a pole. Despite his aversion to these slithering reptiles, Pastor Adam explores what is going on in this story and how Jesus would use this tale to remind us of the need to choose to be in relationship with God so we can live. Happy New Year! As we gathered for the first Sunday of 2024, our congregation began a period of reflection on what it means to live as creatures of time. Pastor Adam led a meditation on how we live adrift on the tides of time, and how that may well be a blessing by God. It's summertime at the Farmville Baptist Podcast, and we figured that meant it was a good time to host some special topical episodes. The theme for this summer's special episodes is a core Baptist principle: religious freedom. An evergreen issue, understanding what Baptists mean when we discuss religious freedom is especially important in a society where religion is impacting public life in many ways, including calls for the adoption of Christian nationalism.
In this final special episode for the summer, Pastor Adam sat down with Amanda Tyler, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and one of the organizers of the Christians Against Christian Nationalism movement. Amanda brings a wealth of experience in issues of religious freedom to the conversation, and she and Adam discuss the meaning of religious freedom, the definition of Christian nationalism and why it is concerning for those who treasure religious freedom, and other work of the Baptist Joint Committee.

It's summertime at the Farmville Baptist Podcast, and we figured that meant it was a good time to host some special topical episodes. The theme for this summer's special episodes is a core Baptist principle: religious freedom. An evergreen issue, understanding what Baptists mean when we discuss religious freedom is especially important in a society where religion is impacting public life in many ways, including calls for the adoption of Christian nationalism.
In this second special episode for the summer, Pastor Adam sat down with Rev. Shelton Miles, a longtime pastor in Virginia who had done tremendous work in the state to promote and protect religious freedom for all. The conversation covers a lot of ground, but you will come away with a better appreciation for the legacy of religious freedom in Virginia and beyond, and Baptists' unique place in promoting religious freedom. You'll also learn about Shelton's own ministry and how that ministry was intertwined with being a champion for religious freedom.

It's summertime at the Farmville Baptist Podcast, and we figured that meant it was a good time to host some special topical episodes. On Palm Sunday, the congregation gathered to hear how Jesus entered Jerusalem to publicly claim his calling as God's Messiah, challenging the status quo and proclaiming a new, different way. Happy Easter! As we gathered to worship together on Easter Sunday, we heard the good news of the resurrection from Matthew 28. Pastor Adam highlighted the calling and willingness of two women, Mary Magdalene and another Mary, to share the amazing news they witnessed at the tomb, and he reminded us how all of us are called to share what good news we know with those around us. Dr. Brown-Meredith is Assistant Professor of Social Work at Longwood University and the advisor for Collaborating with Lancers for Academic Success (CLASP), an on-campus program to help first-gen, racial/ethnic minority, transfer, and low-income students succeed in their academic career and, more generally, in life. Farmville Baptist has supported CLASP during exam time and partners alongside CLASP students in the Farmville Community Garden.

As we enter the season of Lent, we return to our study of how Jesus calls us to grow up in Matthew 5. This week, the Sermon on the Mount enters into the realm of the practical: how do we actually live, day-to-day, as followers of Jesus? Feeding hungry people has been part of the work of Jesus and the people of God from the very beginning. Here in Farmville, many churches and people of goodwill feed hungry people through the work of FACES, our Farmville-area food pantry. Pastor Adam had the chance to sit down with Paul Baker, co-president of FACES, to learn more about what FACES does and how we can help.
One immediate way to help is through the Farmville Youth Collective | Farmville VA | Facebook soup fundraiser for FACES on Sunday, February 19, 2023. This fundraiser will operate from 5:30-7 PM.

What do we need to know - REALLY know - to follow Jesus? And who is it that can have access to the kingdom Jesus talked about? Pastor Adam starts a new sermon series on the Sermon on the Mount with a look at the Beatitudes, inviting us to align our perspective with the perspective of Jesus, who says that there is no one who is excluded from the love of God, no one who cannot enter the kingdom of heaven, no one who is not able to be part of the family of faith.

For 187 years, Farmville Baptist Church has partnered with the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV). Not only is the partnership long, it also is involved; Bill Wilson, Gene Watson, and Adam Tyler have all served as presidents of the BGAV. As the BGAV approaches its 200th anniversary, it is helping churches adapt to a challenging and moving in new directions itself. Pastor Adam sat down for a conversation with the new executive director of the BGAV, Dr. Wayne Faison, to find out how things are going, what the BGAV is doing to help churches adapt to a changing world, and even get a hint of what a good church meal looks like. Wayne also introduces Ascent, a partnership for re-evangelizing North America, and invites all of us to join a movement of prayer.

Farmville Baptist Church has a long history with the Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) for Longwood and Hampden-Sydney. In January, Pastor Adam visited the BCM to check in with Rev. One of the exciting new partnerships Farmville Baptist Church is celebrating is the Farmville Youth Collective (FYC). This is a collaborative effort with Farmville United Methodist Church and Johns Memorial Episcopal Church to create a safe and spiritually-engaging space for teenagers in the Farmville community and the surrounding area. Rev. Cadance Tyler is the pastor for the FYC, and she and Rev. Susie Thomas (FUMC) and the Very Rev. Dr. Nancy Meck (JMEC) sit down with Pastor Adam to talk about the new ministry and their plans for the new year, and also share some last-minute Christmas shopping ideas.

For the third Sunday of Advent, Isaiah invites the exiled people of God to imagine a future of joy in the midst of their own wilderness experience. Pastor Adam ponders how God brings joy in the midst of our own lives and how the way to joy is the way of Jesus. The sanctuary choir also shares "Long Awaited One," showcasing how Jesus fulfilled the joyous expectations of Isaiah and all the faithful ones who longed for the coming of the Messiah.

In addition to our Sunday worship, here at Farmville Baptist we believe that following Jesus means living faith out everyday and working in partnership with others. That's why, in addition to Sunday services and devotional thoughts, we are sharing conversations with ministry and mission partners, as well as highlighting folks in our congregation who are serving as the hands and feet of Jesus right where they are.
Pastor Adam's conversation with Patsy Watson fits both of those categories. Patsy is a long-time member of Farmville Baptist Church who is deeply involved in community ministry and service. Among her many ongoing projects, Patsy heads up the Farmville Interfaith organization, and this year, she is the Christmas Mother for Farmville and Prince Edward County. We are so grateful she was able to sit down over Zoom and have a chat with Pastor Adam about the good work that both of those programs accomplish in our community.
