We have to remember that we only have so much time, energy and attention that we can use during our days.. So knowing these are limited resources, why would we waste them on unimportant things at the expense of important things?

Don’t fill your time with the unimportant but reach for something higher, reach for the important.

So as you go through today and are about to say yes to something, step back for a second and ask yourself if it’s important?

Click HERE if you want me to send you my 3 Secrets to Setting & Achieving Your Goals The winningest coach in sports said this is the most important quality you need to be a successful adult: “The single most important quality a person can have to be successful as an adult is to be resilient and to be resilient you must first fail. And we’re not letting that happen.” Paul Assaiante is the head men’s squash coach at Trinity College. Paul has won 17 National Championships, there was a stretch when they won 13 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS in a row without losing a single match during those years.

Paul is regarded as the winningest coach in sports and I was recently talking with him and he had this to say, “The single most important quality a person can have to be successful as an adult is to be resilient and to be resilient you must first fail. And we’re not letting that happen.”

Paul was talking about the young student athletes coming into his program today. He said he’s never seen them so buttoned up and polished. They could give you all the right answers, be great in interviews, essentially talk the talk and look the part.. But the second they meet adversity they crumble. They haven’t learned to fail. They’ve been striving for perfection and not realizing that the only way you build resilience is by failing and learning to adapt, to grow and to realize you can get through it.

Here is the winningest coach in sports and he’s saying you have to fail. You need to know failure is going to happen but it’s how you respond to failure that is critical. Are you going to expect perfection so the second you meet failure you stop or are you going to be resilient. To run towards your stretch points, come face to face with failure and realize that you can grow and learn from this moment. That just because you failed in one situation doesn’t mean you can’t get back up and go at it again.

So today, give yourself the space to fail, run to your stretch points. Allow your kids and coworkers the room to fail as well and then when they do fail be there for them. To help them grow from this experience and to get back at it again. Because the most important quality an adult can have to be successful is resilience..

How you live your days is how you live your life. Your day is just a condensed version of your life.

As we know the little things become the big things so if you want to craft a great life you need to concentrate on the little things like crafting a great day.

You can’t wait for a later point in your life to start living the way you need to live in order to be on your deathbed and look back with deep fulfillment.

The way you craft a great life is to begin NOW, in this moment! Make sure you live today the way you would if it was your last.

Make it so exceptional that when you crawl into bed tonight deeply fulfilled , exhausted, with a huge smile on your face thinking about what an awesome day today was.

So my question for you: How are you going to show up today?

Will you show up with courage when you face your fears?

Will you show up with resilience in the face of adversity.

Will you show up with compassion for those struggling?

Each moment, choose to show up just a little bit better.

Will you choose to show up as a better version of yourself in the little moments of today because as we know these little moments become our days and our days become our weeks and our weeks become our years and our years are our lives. So remember how you live today is how you live your life.

Everyday we’re either headed in one of two directions: towards our model of who we want to become or towards who we don’t want to be. There is no inbetween. It’s either regression or progress. It’s either growth or decay. Which means everyday you have to make the choice of which direction you’re going to head. The choice is yours…. Choose wisely

One of the fastest ways to speed up your development and growth is to get better reference points. What you want to do is find the people who have done what you want to do and that massively raises the standards of the beliefs you previously put on yourself. You want to see what excellence looks like so you can model excellence.

There are 3 criteria I tend to use when looking for a new reference or model to extract wisdom from.

#1 They need to inspire me. If they don’t inspire me then I’ve found that I don’t tend to want to learn more from them so it’s crucial that the models I’m learning from inspire the hell out of me. They need to energize me about what and who I can become. So that’s #1.

#2 is I need to be able to relate to them. Some people might push back on this but I’m just sharing what works for me. If I can’t relate to someone or see a bit of me in them it’s hard for me to keep with them as a model. So make it easier on yourself, find someone you can relate to. Someone you see a bit of yourself in and someone who is solving the problems you want to solve.

#3. They make me a bit uncomfortable. Yes you heard me right, they make me a bit uncomfortable…. I'm a bit nervous. Now the reason for this is because they’ve raised my standards so much that I know if I want to do what they’ve done then I’m going to have to work incredibly hard and everytime you’re about to take on a massive challenge you get some butterflies in your gut. Well those butterflies are exactly what I’m looking for. I want people who are going to take me to the razor's edge of my limits and be the reason I break past them! If someone you’re modeling doesn’t make you a bit uncomfortable then they aren't stretching you enough!

So there you have it. If you want to speed up your development and personal growth you need to find new reference points of models of people who have done what you want to and that massively raise your standards of what you thought possible.

THe 3 criteria to use to select someone is

#1 they inspire you

#2 you can relate to them

#3 they make you uncomfortable

I was recently talking with Apolo Anton Ohno who is the winningest winter olympic medalist in US history for his 8 medals in short track speed skating. I asked him what was one of the differentiators was between him and the others who got close to olympic glory but didn’t achieve it. He told me it was INTENTIONALITY.

Apollo said intentionality was his differentiator. I have to agree that intentionality is a game changer for the elite performers across all different domains.

Anyone can go into a workout or an event or a business meeting… but the greats, the ones who get the most out of all that they do approach everything with extreme intentionality. They’re clear about why they’re there, what they’re going to do and how they’re going to do it.

Each task we’re about to take on we have the ability to take a moment to pause and think about how we’re going to show up.

The way I do this is at the start of my day I take a few minutes to pause and think about my intention. I ask myself the following questions when I’m setting my intention,

What am I going to do today that is my top priority?

Why is this important to me?

How am I going to show up during these events?

We have this ability to bring this level of intentionality to all we do. So today as you get ready to embark on a new task or moving from thing to thing, step back, pause, ask what is within your control and how you’re going to show up in this moment. When we begin bringing this level of intentionality in the things we do our level of focus will skyrocket and our positive results will be a natural byproduct.

Life is constantly teaching us even when we don’t want to realize that. Every failure we face, every beautiful moment, every experience we have is teaching us. So the question becomes…. Are you thinking of life like that?

Because here’s reality—that’s what life is. Life is a never ending classroom taking us from ignorance to understanding. From confusion to clarity.

We stumble into the unknown and we get to figure this out!

Life is like walking through the fog grasping for something to take hold of. We don’t know what’s in front of us, but by moving forward we begin to see. We begin to learn. Venturing into the dark gives us the opportunity to shine light on our ignorance. That’s learning, that’s growth, that’s life.

Stumbling into the unknown is hard because we don’t know, but the only way to gain the knowledge is by venturing into the unknown! It can’t be the other way around. Life only teaches us through experience so if you want to have the knowledge you need to venture forth!

So as you set out today, look at life like it is. This infinite classroom of possibilities that we get to venture into and figure this all out!

“Few of us write great novels; all of us live. “Few of us write great novels; all of us live them.” — Mignon McLaughlin Fill your day with a little adventure. Search for moments of awe. Step out on the limb and take a few chances you normally wouldn't take.

Too often we go through this life timid, often thinking about the worst that could happen. Take a few moments today and flip that around, view life as a great adventure with endless possibilities because after all that’s what life is. A great adventure with endless possibilities.

So go live your great novel. Do something your 90 year old self would smile at. And after doing that today realize you get to keep living that novel tomorrow.

That next page is blank… why don’t you go write something epic.

Arthur Schopenhauer once noted, “Most people take the limits of their vision to be the limits of the world. A few do not. Join them.” We allow our beliefs to become our limits. Our beliefs can either be our ceilings that limit us or a rocketship to our potential.

You see, our beliefs are self-fulfilling prophecies. Our actions are driven by our beliefs. We don’t act out of alignment with our beliefs.

Believe you're mediocre and a constant victim of life then your actions will be aligned with that. Believe your dumb and will never achieve anything then you will act in alignment with that thinking. But what happens when we remove those limiting beliefs? We open up a new world of possibility. We unlock the doors to our potential.

When we expand our beliefs we begin to act in accordance with that belief. All of a sudden this is like a new awakening where we finally can step forward into growth and take the positive actions that are in alignment with our new beliefs.

So raise your ceiling, get on the rocketship to new beliefs. Think bolder. Realize everyone on this earth is human like you and anyone who’s accomplished something extraordinary made a decision to not put limits on their potential.

Expand what you thought was possible for yourself because someone is going to accomplish your dreams, so why not make it you?

We all can find a million excuses to impede us from taking action on accomplishing our dreams. or we can decide to step into the unknown and set out to be that person who’s going to make our dreams come true. Remember what W.H. Murray said, “Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.” So today dream big, play all out and begin taking action on doing what you’ve dreamed of doing. Because someone is going to do it, might as well make it you!

It’s a few weeks into the new year and you’re tired, you’re exhausted, you want to give up on those goals and return to your comfort zone. But I’m asking you… no I’m begging you to fight. To keep going. To show up as a better version of yourself and take one step at a time towards those goals you set for yourself.

No one else can do this for you, but you have the power to do it. So today when you feel those demons in the back of your mind start to creep in and try to talk you into a life of not achieving your goals, a life of comfort but no growth, a life of mediocrity, decide to say NOT TODAY DEMONS and KEEP GOING towards your dreams.

The great author Carlos Castaneda wrote about “the cubic centimeter of chance”. This little window of opportunity that presents itself to everyone. This little moment where we can grow, where we can step up into our potential… These little windows of opportunity that are there for the taking to enrich our lives and others.

But what Castaneda says is that too often we miss these cubic centimeters of chance because we’re not aware of them. The people who do, the people Castaneda calls warriors are the ones who are ready for them. He says “a warrior is aware of this (cubic centimeter of chance), and one of his tasks is to be alert, deliberately waiting, so that when his cubic centimeter pops out he has the necessary speed, the prowess to pick it up.”

So, are you on alert, deliberately waiting for a cubic centimeter of chance to pop out and to grab it with all your might? Because life is going to present you these moments, so make sure you’re ready for them…

“My formula for greatness in a human being is amor fati: that one wants nothing to be different, not forward, not backward, not in all eternity. Not merely bear what is necessary, still less conceal it . . . but to love it." - Friedrich Nietzsche

This is one of the most powerful concepts in my entire life, Amor fati, the ‘love of your fate,’ which is in fact your life. To be in a place where you want nothing to be different. Even the hardest parts of your life you don’t want ot be different because the more challenge you face, the greater you can become.

When the great Roman Statesman Cicero was done speaking, people always gave him a standing ovation and cheered, "What a great speech!" When Demosthenes was done, people said, "Let us march," and they did. Great leadership inspires people to march. Are people cheering you for your speech or are they marching with you?

Abraham Maslow said that in any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety. Each moment we face there is a little window of opportunity to step up into our potential and growth or to step back into safety and diminish. So as you go through today in each moment ask if you want to step forward into growth or back into safety. I know which one I’m going to choose.

Be the first one to say hello. Be the first one to say a compliment. Be the first one to ask how the other person is truly doing? Go first. Stop waiting for other people to.

Go through this life so everyone you interact with feels bigger. Be the reason their eyes are shining. Let the world feel the power of your gravity. Maximize your humanity. We’re only going through this life but once, so anytime there is an opportunity for you to express kindness or do a good deed, do it now for that opportunity will not present itself again. So today, go first. Go first. Go first, because this world is waiting for more people to go first.

Pick three people today, just three and see if you can make their day just a little bit better. Give them a compliment, ask how they’re doing, maybe just listening and letting them truly be seen. Pick just three people today and if you do this each day by the end of the year you will have positively impacted over 1,000 people. After 10 years over 10,000 people. Just three people a day and by the end of your life you’re making a difference for tens of thousands of people.

What’s that one thing in your life you want to climb?

What’s that one thing that’s been living in your mind for years?

That little thing that insights fear, excitement, and possibility.

That thing that is so challenging but you know deep down you’re capable of doing it.

Maybe it’s climbing Mount Everest. Maybe it’s asking that colleague out on a date. Maybe it’s recording a song you wrote. Maybe it’s finally going all in on the company you wanted to start.

It doesn’t matter what your personal Everst is because it’s yours. But it does matter if you decide to start climbing and take it on or sit in the waiting room of life staring up at it.

You get to decide in this life if the mountain is going to conquer you or if you’re going to conquer the mountain.

Who are your models? The people who you’re studying and learning from? The people who inspire you, who expand what you think is possible for yourself? Do you have them, if not now is a great time to start finding them.

One thing that I’ve learned is that if you want to grow, one of the best ways to do that is to find people who have the qualities and attributes you’re looking to develop within yourself and then model their behavior.

The great part is, you can find models for any part of your life. If you want to be a better father find examples of people who are exceptional fathers and start learning. Want to be a better salesman, find the best salesman in your company and model them. You want to uncover How they've done what they’ve done.

There are going to be certain people were naturally drawn to. Listen to that inner voice. Get clear on who you want to be in this world and when you know that, find the models who can help you. We can find models everywhere. But to find them you need to be looking. So as you go out today ask yourself, Who are you trying to become and who are the models you can learn from to become that person sooner?

Steve Jobs reminisces about an old man who lived down the street when he was a young boy. The man showed him a rock tumbler, and he and Jobs went out and got a handful of plain old rocks, then put them into the can with liquid and grit powder. They closed up the rock tumbler, turned it on, and then the man told Jobs to "come back tomorrow."

The next day, the man opened the can and inside were these "amazingly beautiful polished rocks. The same common stones that had gone in through rubbing against each other like this (clapping his hands), creating a little bit of friction, creating a little bit of noise, had come out these beautiful polished rocks."

Jobs goes on to say how that is a "metaphor for a team that is working really hard on something they're passionate about. It's that through the team, through that group of incredibly talented people bumping up against each other, having arguments, having fights sometimes, making some noise, and working together they polish each other and they polish the ideas, and what comes out are these beautiful stones."

What’s that one thing or handful of things that always seem to get you into your zone? It could be a song, or going for a run, or spending time in solitude… it doesn’t matter what it is, what matters is what it does for you. For me it’s some quiet time reading and reflecting, getting a workout in, a delicious cup of coffee, driving my son to school, listening to some great music with the windows down, walking in nature.. All of these put me into a better state. So whenever I need to get back into my zone of genius I can do it much quicker by doing one of these. So what are yours?

So what I’m going to ask of you today is fill your day with more things that put you into your zone of genius. Allow them to enrich your life because when you’re playing in your zone of genius you’re going to positively impact those around you.

“Coach Bob Bowman’s philosophy is rather simple: We do the things other people can’t or won't do. Bob’s expectations are simple, too. It’s like the quote he had up on the whiteboard one day at practice a few months before the Games. It comes from a business book but in sports it’s the same: ‘In business, words are words, explanations are explanations, promises are promises, but only performance is reality.’

Bob is exquisitely demanding. But it is with him that I learned this essential truth: Nothing is impossible.

And this: Because nothing is impossible, you have to dream big dreams; the bigger, the better.

So many people along the way, whatever it is you aspire to do, will tell you it can’t be done. But all it takes is imagination.

You dream. You plan. You reach.

There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes.

But with hard work, with belief, with confidence and trust in yourself and those around you, there are no limits. Perseverance, determination, commitment, and courage—those things are real. The desire for redemption drives you. And the will to succeed—it’s everything. That’s why, on the pool deck in Beijing in the summer of 2008, there were sometimes no words, only screams.

Because, believe it, dreams really can come true.”

~ Michael Phelps from No Limits

Today is like a blank sheet of paper. Nothing has been written yet.

Nothing has been etched into stone.

You get to decide what this paper is going to be filled with at the end of the day. Are you going to write your story today from the perspective of a victim? The victim who crawled through the day constantly faced burdens and setbacks and got mad at every situation. Or are you going to write the story of the hero? The hero who faced setbacks and defeat. The hero who was afraid and questioned their ability but then found the courage to face their fears and run towards them and discover the treasure that is inside of them.

You see, today is like a blank sheet of paper and each one of us has the opportunity to write our story of how today and therefore our life is going to go.

The great Steve Jobs said something that has always stuck with me. He said “Be a yardstick of quality in all that you do.” It’s a standard you hold yourself to. It’s an approach to life.

It’s a way of being.

In everything we do we have the opportunity to bring a level of quality to it. In everything we do we’re making a statement to the world so you get to ask yourself the question.

What statement are you making with the work you’re putting out?

How are you showing up for your loved ones? What is the level of quality in your report for work? What level of quality are you bringing to all that you do. Like I said it’s a standard you hold yourself to and only you know if you’re being a yardstick of quality in the things that you’re doing.

Life like everything else is something we can work at, we can improve, we can get better at. If we want to learn golf we’re going to practice it. Well life is the same way.

We can develop more empathy, we can be more of a servant leader, we can become more.. Now we can do all this but it’s only going to happen if we work at it.

If you want to get great at life it requires work. We can’t sit back thinking it’s just going to happen. Look at anyone who is great at what they do and they work at it.

The couple who’s celebrating their 50th anniversary and on the dancefloor at the wedding looking like a pair of newlyweds has worked on their relationship.

The father who’s running joyously around with his kids at the park has worked at being a great father.

The leader who puts aside his ego to let his people shine has worked at being a great leader.

Whatever way you want to be great at life you can do it. But the only way you can do it is by working at it. I’m not saying it’s easy but I am saying its possible. So today how are you going to work to become great at life?

1 takeaway from 2022 is from Benjamin Zander- A leader’s job is to awaken the possibility in other people.

My number 1 takeaway from 2022 is from the legendary orchestra conductor Benjamin Zander. Benjamin said

“I was 45 years old, and I’d been conducting for 20 years or more and suddenly I had the realization for the first time that the conductor of an orchestra doesn’t make a sound. Now my picture appears on the front of the CD. But the conductor doesn’t actually make a sound.

He depends for his power on his ability to make other people powerful. And when that occurred to me, it was so profound, it had such an effect on me that people in the orchestra said, Ben, what happened to you? And that’s what happened. I realized that my job was to awaken possibility in other people.

Now the real question became was I doing that. And the way you find out whether you’re doing that is to look at their eyes. And if the eyes are shining you know you’re doing it.

And if the eyes are not shining, you get to ask the question.

And this is the question: who am I being that my players’ eyes are not shining?”

So as you go through today please ask yourself, How am I going to make my loved one’s eyes shine today?

When we do that, we’re all making the world a better place.

Have you asked for what you want? You’ll never know the answer if you don’t even ask. How many possibilities did you miss out on in life because you didn’t even ask. That raise at work, that date with the woman at the gym, that vacation with a parent who is no longer with you.

What do you want right now? Then go ask for it.

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. When the great Roman Statesman Cicero was done speaking, people always gave him a standing ovation and cheered, "What a great speech!" When Demosthenes was done, people said, "Let us march," and they did. Great leadership inspires people to march. Are people cheering you for your speech or are they marching with you?

In the new Top Gun Maverick movie, Tom Cruise has a line in it that sent chills down my spine. In the beginning of the movie Maverick defies the commands from the higher ups in order to try and save the flight program he and his team have been working so hard on. As he is about to fire up the jet one of his teammates (Honda) asks,

“Do you know what will happen to you if you do this?” Maverick’s reply: “I know what happens to everyone else if I don’t,” Maverick is willing to sacrifice his own ass in order to allow the success of the team's mission. That’s great leadership. A driven leader who pushes his team but is always in pursuit of the mission that is bigger than himself. Everyday as leaders we get to ask ourselves, Are we sacrificing for the greater good? And then we let our actions speak louder than our words, just as Maverick did.

Steph curry 11 missed threes and the next game he sets an nba record for most three pointers in a game.

On November 4 2016 Steph Curry shot 0-for-10 effort on 3-pointers and ended his NBA record streak of 157 consecutive games with a made 3-pointer. Here he had what is considered one of the worst performances of his life. But what do the greats do. Do they let one performance send them down a downward spiral or do they bounce back? Well bounce back is what Steph Curry did. In his next game he exploded for 46 points and set what was at the time a NBA record with 13 3-pointers made in a game.

That’s what the best do, that’s what you can do. You can allow a failure, a setback or a defeat be the fuel that leads you to your greatest success the next time out. Keep shooting, keeping trying and never let failure define who you will be the next time out.

Be someone's hero today Heroes don’t just wear capes and fly around rescuing people from burning buildings. Heroes show up in little ways. They do little acts with great kindness and generosity. You see yesterday I was on a walk and saw an old woman struggling to drag her garbage can to the end of her driveway. I simply stopped and asked if she needed help and pulled her garbage to the end of the driveway. For me it took 10 seconds and was a simple task but to her trying to do that felt like climbing Mount Everest. She looked at me with such gratitude and said thank you, today you are my hero. A simple act can make you a hero. So go out and be someone’s hero today.

If you want to stop being so disturbed by all the problems, challenges and obstacles life is bound to throw at you then you need to raise your threshold. Imagine you have a low threshold and face a size 4 or 5 problem that's going to derail you. But if you have a high threshold then when you face a size 8 or 9 problem it won’t derail you. So what you need to do to raise your threshold is the next time you face a challenge see if you can raise your threshold slightly. Do this overtime and slowly your threshold will increase and you will be able to face large obstacles without being derailed.

Standing at the edge of the ocean is a lot like facing our fears or the unknown. When you’re standing on the edge of the ocean looking at the waves you’re safe, no waves are hitting you but you can see the power of the waves. It’s like the anxiety before we start. We aren’t actually experiencing any pain but anticipating it.

Then we decide to take action. We enter the water and guess what, it’s hard. Waves are crashing down on us. Sometimes we get pummeled and others times we can make it through. But guess what happens when you get past the waves? Calm waters. Just like when you face your fears. You realize they weren’t as bad as when you were standing on the edge of the water thinking about how bad they would be. You realize you are capable of more than you originally thought and because you made it through those waves you know that the next time you’re facing the unknown and standing at the edge of the water you have the power to get through the waves and out to the calm waters.

Mastery lives quietly atop a mountain of mistakes. So often we see the masters, we see the people who are truly great at what they do and while they've had the most successes, we forget that they've had the most failures as well. It was these learning opportunities that they used to advance and develop. Remember it's going to take failures if you want to achieve mastery in anything you do.

“I cursed the fact I had no shoes until I met the man who had no feet.”- Persian Proverb

That is one of my favorite proverbs that puts life in perspective for me. When I'm going through a challenging time I think about this proverb and the billions of people who have it worse than me. I think about the billions of people who have it so much worse than me. Even on my worst day, they would die to have the life I have. If you're listening to this podcast you're one of those people. There are billions of people who have it worse. As we go through today and we're looking to complain about a scenario, realize that you might not have shoes, but there are people who do not have feet.

Today I’m going to talk about the great exercise I learned from legendary orchestra conductor Benjamin Zander’s that he calls “Giving an A”.

He said, Michelangelo is often quoted as having said that inside every block of stone or marble dwells a beautiful statue; one need only remove the excess material to reveal the work of art within. If we were to apply this visionary concept to education, it would be pointless to compare one child to another. Instead, all the energy would be focused on chipping away at the stone, getting rid of whatever is in the way of each child’s developing skills, mastery, and self-expression.

This A is not an expectation to live up to, but a possibility to live into.

“Each student in this class will get an A for the course,” I announce. “However, there is one requirement that you must fulfill to earn this grade: Sometime during the next two weeks, you must write me a letter dated next May, which begins with the words, ‘Dear Mr. Zander, I got my A because . . . ,’ and in this letter you are to tell, in as much detail as you can, the story of what will have happened to you by next May that is in line with this extraordinary grade.”

In writing their letters, I say to them, they are to place themselves in the future, looking back, and to report on all the insights they acquired and milestones they attained during the year as if those accomplishments were already in the past. Everything must be written in the past tense. Phrases such as “I hope,” “I intend,” or “I will” must not appear. The students may, if they wish, mention specific goals reached or competitions won.

“But, “I tell them, “I am especially interested in the person you will have become by next May. I am interested in the attitude, feelings, and worldview of that person who will have done all she wished to do or become everything he wanted to be.” I tell them I want them to fall passionately in love with the person they are describing in their letter.

So how can we all fall more passionately in love with the person we're becoming or working with today?

Today I'm going to discuss the great entrepreneur, Danny Meyer's, Excellence Reflex Framework. Danny says that people duck as a natural reflex when something is hurled at them. Similarly, the excellence reflex is a natural reaction to fix something that isn’t right, or to improve something that could be better. Restaurant workers are famous for a lot of things, but there's this consistently weird thing I've noticed through the years where they don't often know how to look down. They walk right over the little pink Sweet-n-Low wrapper that somebody dropped from their table. That's not using your excellence reflex. That doesn't belong there. It's like, if it's not right, you gotta fix it, whatever it happens to be. There's a great expression, “always leave your campsite neater than you found it”. So as you go through today make sure you're using the Excellence Reflex and trying to make things just a little bit better.

We often envision who we want to be at some future moment in time but we forget that all we need to do is in this moment make a simple decision to act in accordance with how that future better version of yourself would act and we collapse the timeline. We bring that version of yourself into the present moment. When we start doing this we collapse the timelines in life. Don’t wait for tomorrow…Do it now. Be it now… Collapse the timeline!

"When you get to that last drop of sand in the hourglass, everything that you own is of no comfort to you. The only thing that comforts you is the people." That's a line from a conversation with Oprah and Mitch Albom. Mitch wrote about the most impactful life lessons he learned from his former professor, Morrie Schwartz, who was dying from ALS. This line hit me so hard because we constantly strive to acquire more and so often we do it at detriment of the relationships that matter most. But when you talk to people on their deathbed it always comes back to the relationships that matter most. As we move through today maybe we can put a little more focus, love and compassion towards the people that will matter most when we reach the end of our days.

Getting extraordinary results is all about creating a domino effect in your life. It’s about building a little momentum and letting that momentum lead to more momentum.

When one small thing is set in motion, it can topple many things. In 1983, Lorne Whitehead wrote in the American Journal of Physics that he’d discovered that domino falls could not only topple many things, they could topple bigger things. He wrote how a single domino is capable of bringing down another domino that is actually 50 percent larger.

If you start with a 2 inch domino, the 10th domino would be about as tall as a grown man. The 23rd domino? Now you’re looking at the Eifel Tower.

The 31st domino would topple Mount Everest.

Why does this approach work? Because extraordinary success is sequential, not simultaneous.

So as you go about today can you find that lead domino that you’re going to set off a powerful chain reaction in your own life?

Find the lead domino, and be relentless about it until it falls.

You won’t succeed if you don’t even try. It's such a simple but profound insight. Sometimes in life we just need little reminders like this. Too often we end up losing because we don’t even try, we don’t even begin. There will always be excuses of why not to try- you don’t have enough experience, you don’t have enough money, you don’t have enough time… There will never be a perfect time to begin so why not make that time now?

You might be thinking Sean, but what if I fail? And my question for you is would you rather live life on the sidelines or would you rather be on the field of life discovering what you’re capable of?

Because you won’t succeed if you don’t even try.

The world is not bothering you. You’re bothering yourself about the world.

Everything bothers you. If it’s hot out, you're starting to sweat. It bothers you. Then it’s too cold out and your chilly. It bothers you. The person driving in front of you is only going 1 mile over the speed limit as opposed to 6 over and now you’re telling yourself they’re the worst driver ever. Does this sound familiar?

Don’t underestimate the importance of this.

The world is going to unfold around us the way that it’s going to unfold. Bad stuff, good stuff. Ugly stuff beautiful stuff... Life will happen, But how we respond to these moments and experiences is up to us. How about we learn to not bother ourselves?

None of us know how much time we have on this earth so will you please enjoy your life instead of bothering yourself about life? Why are you bothering yourself about everything?

I’m not saying some moments are going to be as enjoyable as others but what I’m saying is we don’t have to make it worse in our own minds.

This morning I was stuck in traffic taking my son to school. Let me tell you what my internal thoughts were like right away… “Dammit we’re going to be late again and I’m going to have to get the administrator to unlock the front door again. What the hell this guy just cut me off. Screw him I hope he gets in a fender bender. Why isn’t the AC blowing enough cold air. Why can’t anyone drive! Jesus the sun is in my eyes, THE SUN IS IN MY EYES”

Then you realize you can take a deep breath and not bother yourself about the moment.

The fact is I was stuck in traffic. So this is where I took my thoughts.. Looks like I get to spend a few extra minutes with my son this morning, how great is that? Let’s put on a few songs and jam out. Remember in high school you used to sit around for hours just listening to music. So how is sitting in traffic now listening to music any different. The the warm sun on my face feels so good.

Do you see how simple that is? I could have spent my morning in a tailspin of negativity or I could get with the program and stop bothering myself about the world. When a moment arises, take a deep breath, relax your body like a heavy weight is being lifted off your chest, channel your thoughts to something more positive and Just enjoy the moment life is presenting you.

Now most of us are probably vaguely familiar with Michaelangel’s famous Statue of David.

This magnificent statue captured the heroic David who is still known throughout the world as the one who defeated Goliath.

So here we have David, the massive underdog who everyone assumes can never defeat the great Goliath. Well, the interesting thing about the statue is have you ever thought about what face Michaelangelo decided to carve of David for everyone to see?

The first time I thought about it I assumed it was David’s victorious face after defeating Goliath…

But Michelangelo didn’t carve David’s victory face.

No Michelangelo carved the face David made in the moment he DECIDED to face his fears, to step up into his potential and take on Goliath.

That moment of decision.. That moment is one we’re all faced with everyday. A moment in time we can DECIDE to be more of what we’re capable of being. To face our fears. To take on the Goliaths in the world.

To step up into your potential and bring to this world what only you can bring. There never has been and never will be another you. So show up today as only you can and decide to take on Goliath.

Today I stepped outside and the morning sun hit my face… It hit my face and I paused. I just savored the warmth and pleasure this was giving me. Now almost everytime we step outside life gives us these little moments that we can savor if we become aware and choose to.

The sunlight on your face, a subtle breeze blowing through your hair, the sound of the birds singing, the laughter of the kids playing… We are surrounded by these all the time but we’re zipping through life that we never take the time to appreciate them.

So today, as we step outside, why don’t we take a few seconds to pause, to become aware of the little bits of joy that we’re constantly surrounded by and enjoy it. We’re always focused on where we’re going but today just for a few seconds let’s enjoy where we are and the little joys all around us.

After sitting down to interview and deconstruct hundreds of the most successful people in the world I discussed there are some commonalities between them. I discovered that almost all of them operate in a framework I created called VBARRC.

VBARRC is an acronym that stands for - vision - belief- action- routine- revise- consistent

VISION BELIEF ACTION ROUTINES REVISE CONSISTENCY

If you want to achieve more in life and become what you’re capable of becoming then-

Have a compelling vision. You must know what you’re going after.

Believe you can achieve it. If you don’t have hope and a belief it’s possible you wont ever try.

You need to Take massive action

Cultivate the routines of the person you want to become

Revise as you learn and grow

And then Consistency in action, patients with results

So map out what you’re doing in the VBARRC framework and see if it’s going to help you discover more of what you’re capable of.

Does anyone know the name Daniel Kish? I would have been very impressed if anyone knew that name but Daniel is someone we can all learn a great lesson from.

See, I love finding people who are able to do remarkable things because it pulls back the curtain to what we as humans are all capable of.

Now if you Google Daniel Kish you will most likely see a photo of a middle aged man riding a bike.

Now the reason that seeing Daniel ride a bike in traffic is so inspiring to me is because Daniel had his eyes removed when he was 13 months old. Daniel is 100% blind.

Yes no eyes and he’s riding a bike in traffic and navigating it rather well. Daniel does this by a technique he developed called “Flash Sonor”... Essentially Daniel uses verbal clicks like a bat uses sonar to orient himself in space.

It’s one of the more remarkable things I’ve come across and I could end this here and I’d hope we’d all be a bit more inspired about what we’re capable of but there is a part of what Daniel’s been able to do that deeply interests me.

Here is someone who’s developed this technique that essentially every blind person could develop so the question is, why aren’t they?

Daniel was asked if he’s been able to teach other blind people this technique and he said “‘I’ve had limited success. Because in order to learn how to do this, in order to be able to do this, you have to be ‘all in.’ ALL IN. You can’t just dip your toes into the water in life you need to go ALL IN.

Succeeding at anything is all about being ‘all in’. But you have to carefully define what you are going all in on.

So take the time to get clarity about the few things that matter most to you and provide the most meaning and then GO ALL FREAKING IN ON THOSE! Because life’s too short not to go all in.

It’s easier to act yourself into a new way of thinking than to think yourself into a new way of acting. If you want to make changes in your life the most important element is not going to be great thoughts but action. The smallest of actions is always better than the noblest of intentions. Overtime these small actions become part of who you are and shape your way of thinking.

Want to be a better parent? Stop thinking about doing it and just start being fully present with your children instead of being on your phone.

Want to create financial independence through a side hustle. Don’t just dream up ideas all day, start taking action that will get you closer to your goal.

Want to get the body you’ve said you’ve always wanted? Well stop just dreaming of it and get in the gym each morning.

We often believe that thinking great thoughts will give us the changes we want but while the great thoughts are important the real development takes places when we start taking action.

So what one little action step can you take today to get you closer to your goal?

Admiral William H. McRaven is a retired United States Navy Four-Star admiral and is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Make Your Bed and the New York Times bestseller Sea Stories: My Life in Special Operations. In his thirty-seven years as a Navy SEAL, he commanded at every level. So there is a lot to learn. In his latest book he lays out his hero code for a life well lived which are comprised of 10 virtues.

The Hero Code: Courage. Humility. Sacrifice. Integrity. Compassion. Perseverance. Duty. Hope. Humor. Forgiveness

“I will always strive to be COURAGEOUS; to take one step forward as I confront my fears.

I will work to be HUMBLE; to recognize the limits of my intellect, my understanding, and my power.

I will learn to SACRIFICE by giving a little of my time, my talent, and my treasure to those in need.

I will be a person of INTEGRITY; every decision I make and every action I take will be moral, legal, and ethical.

I will be kind and COMPASSIONATE to at least one person every single day and expect nothing in return.

I will never give up on matters that are important to me, my family, my country, my faith. I will PERSEVERE.

Whatever job I am given, whatever DUTY I am bound by, I will do it to the best of my ability.

I will use my unique talents to inspire others and give them HOPE that tomorrow will be a better day.

I will use HUMOR to comfort others, and never be afraid to laugh at myself.

No matter how great or small the offense against me, I will FORGIVE. I will be the victor, not the victim.”

Do you have a hero code you’re living by?

Don’t let your failures determine who you become… Let them fuel you! * Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper because he lacked imagination and had no good ideas, * Steven Speilberg was rejected from one of the best film schools. That film school now has a building named after him. * Henry Ford’s first two companies failed and he went bankrupt five times. * Richard Branson has dyslexia and dropped out of school. * Albert Einstein couldn’t speak until the age of 4 and he couldn't read until the age of 7. * JK Rowling lived on government welfare and had her Harry Potter manuscript rejected 12 times. * Oprah was fired from a news channel for being unfit for TV.

YOUR FAILURES DON’T DEFINE YOU. You determine who you become in this world.

Everyone in this world is going to fail and stumble… Yes even the greats. So why don’t you use those failures as fuel to your fire and let the world see you burn brightly!

I was just taking a walk and saw a dog sitting in it’s yard with no color on barking at a squirrel as it ran by. I was surprised that with nothing holding it back the dog could easily chase after this squirrel. Then I saw an invisible fence sign, you know one of those invisible fences that the dog wheres a little color that emits a shock if it crosses over the line. And it had me thinking. Here this dog isn’t wearing the shock color but it still believes it’s trapped inside this yard. Like the dog we too are bound by invisible fences that lock us inside.

Like the dogs shock color we become trapped by little things early in our lives. A teacher tells us we can’t do something when we’re young and we end up believing that for the rest of our lives. We fail at something and then never try again. We opened up in one relation and got hurt so we decide to never fully open up again. So we end up going through life held back and bound by these defeating mindsets and beliefs. We forget that these beliefs can be examined to see if they’re accurate and serve us. Oftentimes when we end up questioning and exploring these false beliefs we realize how silly and defeating they really are.

So today explore one of your invisible fences. Really get to know it and when you do take off your shock color and walk boldly through that invisible fence because there is so much greatness on the other side.

Heroes are made in hard times.

Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Victor Frankl… The people we look up to and admire greatly were not made during easy times. They were met with incredible adversity they had to both FACE and OVERCOME. It’s because of these hard times that they were able to discover their heroism.

Without the challenge of freeing the people of South Africa from Aparteid would we know the name Mandela?

Without having to be a beacon of hope in the civil rights movement we would know the name Martin Luther King Jr?

Without abolishing slavery would we know the name Lincoln?

When we’re going through hard times it sucks, it’s not easy, that’s why they’re called hard times. But remember it’s these hard times that allow your true heroism to come through. That heroism is within all of us. Sometimes we just need a hard time to allow it to come out.

We all play different roles in our lives. For most of us there are just a handful that really matter, husband, father, boss, friend… The question becomes, what are the different roles I play and how am I going to show up in them today?

This is a question we get to answer in each moment with our actions.

As a husband am I going to be patient, be my wife’s champion, take a burden off her back..

As a father will I be playful, spontaneous, fully present in the moments I spend with my children…

As a boss am I going to lead my people through my actions rooted in moral values, will I give them the flexibility they need while also providing the support and guidance to help them…

So as you move through today spend a quiet moment reflecting on the different roles you play and how you WILL show up in those roles.

“The great victory, which appears so simple today, was the result of a series of small victories that went unnoticed.”~ Paulo Coelho

Today’s episode is all about how one person can make a major difference just by their actions. Last night I was watching the Redeem Team documentary on Netflix about the 2008 USA Men’s Basketball Team.

Now in preparation for the Olympics the team was training in Las Vegas and when you’re in Vegas what do you do? You go to the club.

So almost the entire team is out at a club and end up stumbling back to the hotel at 4 in the morning. As these players are walking to the elevator they see someone come off the elevator. That person is Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant has his workout clothes on and is headed to the gym. As everyone else on the team is coming back from a night of partying, Kobe is about to attack the gym for a 4am workout.

The guys on the team couldn’t believe his dedication.

But this is where the change happens.

The next morning it wasn’t just Kobe in the gym. Lebron James and Dwayne Wade were there for a morning workout. By the end of the week the entire team was at the gym at the crack of dawn.

So don’t ever underestimate the impact you or anyone else can have on the people around you by setting the example you want to see in the world.
