The Importance of Palliative Care: "Palliative care is care that is administered early in the disease trajectory. It's care that could be administered alongside active treatments to control the disease. Palliative care should be delivered by not just palliative care specialist teams, but could be delivered by your family doctor, your nurse practitioner, your oncologist, cardiologist, your personal support worker, your PT, OT, and your Pilates instructor.

Everyone has a role to play..."— Jeff Moat

In our latest episode of Lessons From The Core, Lisa Khera talks to Jeff Moat about the transformative power of loss, social entrepreneurship, and palliative care.

Jeff Moat shares his journey from working in the private financial sector to a career in palliative care. After experiencing the profound loss of a parent, Jeff realized that he could use his skills to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and communities. Jeff has contributed to initiatives that enhanced access to palliative care for more Canadians, created better experiences for healthcare professionals and patients, and facilitated quality improvement.

Jeff's passion for palliative care led him to work with Pallium Canada, a research-driven social enterprise based in Ottawa. Pallium Canada enhances the quality and accessibility of palliative care by building the capacity of healthcare professionals and communities.

They offer a courseware called Leap (Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care), aimed at ensuring healthcare professionals acquire necessary skills and knowledge and put them into action, reshaping the entire continuum of care. Pallium Canada also provides resources for the general public who may not fully understand palliative care.

The episode highlights that palliative care is not just care delivered at the end of life, and everyone, including family doctors, nurses, personal support workers, PTs, OTs, Pilates instructors, and others, can have a role in delivering palliative care and supporting patients and their families.

Giving good palliative care earlier and more effectively is crucial and requires a shift in mindset about what palliative care means.

The episode further delves into the stigma surrounding palliative care and how normalizing discussions around living with life-limiting illnesses, dying, death, and grieving is crucial to overcoming obstacles to providing comprehensive care.

The episode also discusses the importance of self-care in caregiving and healthcare professions, and how Pilates and exercise can alleviate stress and help achieve stability.

We hope you find Jeff Moat's story inspiring and informative. To listen to the full episode, click the link to our show and subscribe to our podcast to receive notifications on future episodes.

Being an entrepreneur comes with its own set of challenges, and running a clinic is no easy feat. Entrepreneurs need to have the ability to adapt to changes in the economy and in consumer demand. On episode #19 of the Lessons From The Core podcast, I had the pleasure of hosting Rose Caddy Nwaha, a nurse, and owner of Roccoderm Clinic and Rocan Agency. She shares her experiences of networking and building successful businesses, and how her lifelong passion for nursing has led to the creation of a thriving medical, aesthetic, beauty, and wellness clinic. Rose and I met in May 2022 at a networking event in Ottawa, hosted by Bosses Helping Bosses. The power of community and support goes a long way in feeling supported in your business. Rose knew from a young age that she wanted to dedicate her life to caring for others. Her passion for nursing was sparked when she was just six years old, as she cared for her sick grandmother. From that moment on, Rose knew that she was born to be a nurse. She went on to pursue her dream, earning her nursing degree and dedicating herself to providing compassionate care to her patients. Today, Rose is a respected nurse and healthcare professional, known for her commitment to excellence and her unwavering dedication to the health and well-being of those in her care.Listen to the episode as we learn about unexpected challenges faced by entrepreneurs, building a plan to help clients gain confidence, and the importance of being a helper. We chatted about the challenges of being an entrepreneur while still managing to prioritize family life, and how being a woman entrepreneur can bring unforeseen challenges. We also dove into the medical aesthetic field and the rewarding feeling of being able to help clients build confidence by offering services like neuromodulators, botox, and fillers. In this episode, we had the privilege of speaking with Carol-Chantal Seguin, who started WOW *in Montreal in 2012 to address the need for social networking among women entrepreneurs.

Carol's background as a director of finance and operations for a large courier transport company led her to coach new entrepreneurs on structure, operations, and finance. Many of those she coached were women starting their own businesses and seeking accounting services, which led to the birth of WOW.
Wow is a social network that offers free mentorship to anyone who wants 30 minutes of help. They also offer free biweekly Mastermind events to members of the Wow Canada Facebook group, where attendees receive valuable tips and strategies in areas such as marketing and visibility.

Carol emphasizes the importance of heart-centered businesses that prioritize serving clients and creating positive synergy, which is why she believes in the Law of Attraction and aims to help clients continue their business with effective strategies.
The in-person meetings held by WOW provide an opportunity for ambassadors and attendees to meet each other and form a community of women helping women. This community is empowering and provides ambassadors with resources to support other women-owned businesses in their city.
We also learned about the upcoming Spiritual Summit that Carol and her team are organizing. The summit covers a spectrum of spirituality and includes ten speakers with nine workshops every 30 minutes. The event takes place on Saturday, April 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We encourage our listeners to attend and support the youth program that is fundraising for autism.

The event will have a table for direct donations, as well as a table with gift baskets donated by vendors and speakers.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle ticket draw twice a day, at 2 PM and 6 PM, with two winners each time. Volunteers will help with the draw and fundraising for Autism.
Lastly, we want to thank Carol-Chantal Seguin for being on the podcast and for always welcoming all of the WOW ambassadors and community. Follow and review the podcast.

We look forward to attending the Spiritual Summit and other up-coming events.*

Her focus for clients is to educate them on the process and work with them to develop long-term plans. She has been a team manager at her brokerage for the last three years, coaching agents on the team on how to build a business with a focus on moving them into managerial positions. Ericka was a regular volunteer with the Sri Lanka Canada Association of Ottawa for many years and most recently was a board member with FemCity Ottawa Chapter.

She has just joined the board of Canadian Women of Colour Leadership Network as the Director of Outreach and Awareness and hosts a monthly spotlight speaker series on their IG platform. Her next projects will focus on ways to advocate for women and children leaving domestic abuse and violence in our community. Recently she has begun her coaching certification program with the Jay Shetty Certification School as part of opening her life coaching consultancy.

She hopes that others use her as an example that despite adversity and the challenges we face, we must always seek to fulfill our dreams no matter how others may respond.

"Being your best you is the best gift you can give to those around you."Ericka shared: How she got into the world of finance. She shared tips on how to teach children about budgeting and proper money habits. Highlights: the Red flag lessons from Zaeira -

"I think the lesson for me was really trusting your intuition. Even if something seems scary or unattainable, just being bold and going for it, and being true to what you want.

And if you feel unhappy to the point where you're going to get sick or you feel such a dis-ease within yourself, that's your inner voice telling you that you have to make a shift and that you need to realign your priorities.

Meditation in the morning, it's having a routine, having a strong morning routine has been the key for me to stay consistent.

I'm a routine person and I have dealt with anxiety I realized that anxiety was coming from a place of fear and it would cause me to procrastinate, which would cause more anxiety.

So with great coaches and through reading, I've learned that a morning routine is key for me, setting my intention for that day and meditating and exercise".

If you were to write a book, what would it be about?
"I think my book would be about backing yourself up. And what I mean by that is, there are so many moments in our life where sometimes we are our own worst critic.

You know, we're our biggest, like, we just don't believe in ourselves when we should. And there are already so many people out there that might doubt you or you think doubt you but

You don't want to be one of them. And it's the key, I think, is you have to believe in yourself.

You have to believe what you're doing and if you're following your calling, you're doing it for the best reason.

You're doing it to fulfill your purpose. And it doesn't matter what the people that are the naysayers say. If you're doing the right thing and you're following your heart, just believe in yourself.

Just back yourself up. Don't doubt yourself. Don't put yourself down. Words are so powerful. Say good things about yourself.

You know, it's not easy out there. So the least you can do is get out there and say, you know what, I got this.

I can handle this. I'm doing the right thing. And I'm so excited to help these people in the community.

Back yourself up - that would be my book".

Why I Stopped Nutriding

I figured I would let you in on an inside joke we have in our household.

The term is called "Nutriding" and essentially means putting someone on a pedestal. We all know that when you put someone else up high above you they immediately start looking down on you.

The dynamic and energy shifts and it usually ends up in a big old pile of life lessons, the deep lessons from the core.

If you feel like you have lost touch with your first impression intuition or have found yourself in a room where the vibe was just full of red flags but you didn't listen - this episode will help you reconnect with what's important: movement and meditation to allow you to connect with your inner knowing.

Hi and welcome to the Lessons From The Core podcast with your host, Lisa Khera. This episode is sponsored by In Balance Pilates.

There are so many ways to increase that reach and visibility, so many ways to help other businesses shine, and bring the light on other authors, and entrepreneurs. That's definitely what I'm here to do. I always love to ask my guests about their own red flag moments and what lessons they learned from the situation.

Being able to learn from our own mistakes, experiences, and lessons, being able to sit back and listen to someone else's story and hear what kind of lessons they were able to gain and move forward to see yourself a little bit and their story to be able to move forward with growth. We all know if we don't get that lesson right away, it's only going to keep repeating in other people, other groups, other jobs, and other business endeavors, right? We need to feel it, heal it. We're human. No more of this shutting off feelings. Face the lessons and move forward.
