Haryana witnessed the festivities of panchayat elections at their peak in November when Ritika hit the ground to tell us a story on how women of Thana Chhappar Panchayat, Yamunanagar district were not in agency of their votes. Reporting from an intersectional lens, the story addresses major societal hindrances in the way of informed voting— patriarchy and caste.

Reporting from the gender lens is important; reporting it right is indispensable. In this interaction with one of our seasoned reporters from Maharashtra, we talk about her experiences and learnings in covering two stories from Beed as a part of the Laadli Media Fellowship.
The first story brings out the plight of people at the cross-section of gender and disability, while the second story brings to the fore the challenges of single women in rural areas. These two stories are also great examples of covering the gender beat with an intersectional lens.
Knowing the nuances of this beat usually comes from workshops and resources on gender sensitive reporting, something which is up and coming in the Indian journalism scene.

Bhopal Zilla Panchayat is deploying local women to collect long-neglected panchayat taxes. This has been promising but it also means the administration has to work doubly hard to deliver basic services in these villages. Because these women aren’t going to simply collect taxes, they are going to fight for their community’s rights as well.
