A podcast where we talk about the typical things that get left out in conversations about motherhood.
This week I talk about how there is a huge disconnect between people wanting their children to grow into adults that can think for themselves, and the way that they think children should be disciplined. If we want to raise free thinkers then we need to allow children to think for themselves and not constantly shoot down their ideas with harsh punishments that have no real world application.

In a world where toddlers and children literally don't get to choose most of the things that happen in there day, why are so many parent so pressed about the clothes their kids wear? Why are we taking all autonomy away from them? For someone like me (and my daughter) picking our outfits is a way that we can express ourselves so I let her have a say in the clothes we buy her and what she wears day to day. Is it always what I would choose? Rarely ever, but she is happy, confident, and full of enthusiasm about her outfit choices so why would I be trying to stop her from that? We have people saying every day that they want to raise independent thinkers, creative leaders, and confident children but at the first sign their child wants to express their individuality they silence them. I argue that mindset does the exact opposite to our children. And at the end of the day, why does it matter so much to you that your child wears exactly what you want them to?

Gentle parenting often gets confused with Permissive Parenting even though the practice of Gentle Parenting is much more aligned with Authoritative Parenting. In this weeks episode Alyssa speaks about "saving" our partners from having to resolve problems for our children. When we have supportive partners in parenting that want to resolve issues for our children we should let them do that without interfering or jumping in to "save the day" and resolve issues more quickly just because we know how to more efficiently.

On this weeks episode Alyssa talks about restraint collapse, how her children present with this behavior, and how she helps them regulate after school. We all experience this at some point in our lives and it can be increasingly difficult for children to know how to navigate these big emotions after being away from home all day. When we get to our "safe person" or "safe place" it's common for us to break down, cry, and let out the emotions we've been holding in and children experience the same thing at the beginning of a new school year, new sport, or after spending time in a new environment.

(It's more interesting than it sounds) After reading this study Alyssa sees how her own mom guilt could be the result of the very traditional gender roles that are at play in her own household.
