Looking for tabletop game to play with your spouse that’s both fun and won’t wind up with one of you sleeping on the couch? Join Michael and Suzy as they discover new games each week, while tasting a new wine, beer or spirit!
Exploring Push-Your-Luck Fun with Quacks and a Crisp California ChardonnayIn this episode of Meeples & Wine, Michael and Suzy dive into one of the most entertaining bag-building games around: Quacks (originally released as The Quacks of Quedlinburg). They pair it with the approachable and delicious Decoy Chardonnay 2024 from Duckhorn Vineyards.
The game puts you in the role of quack doctors brewing risky potions by drawing ingredient chips from your personal bag. Push your luck to fill your pot for big points, but watch out — too many cherry bombs and your potion explodes! Michael and Suzy discuss how it plays with two players, share their fun scores, and talk about the clever risk-reward mechanics that make every round exciting.
They also review the Decoy Chardonnay 2024, a fruit-forward white with notes of ripe tangerine, mango, pineapple, and a touch of vanilla oak. It’s a versatile, crowd-pleasing wine that pairs beautifully with the game’s lighthearted chaos.
Listen now to hear their full thoughts on gameplay, strategy, and whether this combo is relationship-safe!

We’re heading to the Midwest Gaming Classic next week outside Tabletop Village. Come say hi!
Today we’re tasting the Cult Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 from Cult Vines in Lodi, California. It’s a medium-bodied, easy-drinking Cab with notes of black cherry, raspberry, chocolate, oak, tobacco, and light spice. Smooth and silky with powdery tannins—fruity, lightly spicy, and great for casual sipping. Vivino rating ~3.8–3.9. Pairs beautifully with grilled steak, burgers, lamb, tomato-based pastas, mushroom risotto, eggplant Parmesan, or bold cheeses.
The game we’re playing is Arkham Horror: Lovecraft Letter (2025). It’s a super quick push-your-luck deduction card game that re-themes the classic Love Letter system with the madness and monsters of the Arkham Horror universe. Draw, discard, and try to survive Cthulhu-flavored chaos—multiple winners possible. Very light, plays 2–6, BGG ~7.5.
We review Batman: Love Letter at episode 29, you can find that HERE!
How does it play with two players? Was it fun?Fun Score 1–10: Michael – 8, Suzy – 8.
Will it wreck the relationship?Couch Score 1–5: Michael – 2, Suzy – 2.

This time around, we’re tasting the Clad & Cordon Cab Sauv from Clad & Cordon Winery (check them out at https://www.cladandcordon.com/). It’s a bold Cabernet Sauvignon hailing from Creal Springs, IL, near Marion and the Shawnee area. Expect flavors like blackcurrant, black cherry, plum, and cassis, with maybe some green bell pepper or mint vibes, plus oak notes of vanilla, cedar, or tobacco. Illinois’ cooler climate gives it brighter acidity and less ripe fruit than your typical California Cab. Fun fact: We tried their Blueberry wine back in the Hive episode—peep that at https://www.meeplesandwine.fun/hive.
Now, onto the game: Noxford (2016), a sneaky little title you can scope out on BoardGameGeek at https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/206448/noxford. It’s all about leading a crime syndicate in a steampunk city that’s always building itself up. You place cards to control rich districts using area majority, hand management, and tile placement mechanics. Designed by Henri Kermarrec (known for stuff like Ekö and Penny Papers Adventures—his BGG page is https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamedesigner/10777/henri-kermarrec), with art by Maud Chalmel (she did Take Time too, check https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameartist/83279/maud-chalmel). Published by Capsicum Games and Quick Simple Fun Games, it plays 2-4 people, rates a 6.1/10 on BGG with low complexity (1.77/5).
Setup’s straightforward: Each player gets 10 Syndicate cards (Master at rank 4, Lieutenants at 3, etc.), lay your Master face-up, shuffle and draw 3. Neutral deck has Rich Districts and Barracks. Start with two cards in the center, L-shaped. On your turn, either place a card adjacent to at least two others (corners aligned, no overhangs) or cover a lower-rank Syndicate with a higher one. Masters count double for control, and gear icons let you relocate cards. Game ends when the last Syndicate’s played—Barracks flip touching Syndicates, then score districts based on majority (1 VP per symbol +2 bonus for your fave). Ties? Nobody wins that district. Most VPs takes it, or most districts in a tie. It’s simple, spatial, and a bit cutthroat—perfect for a quick session!
No expansions for this one. Playing with two? We both gave it a fun score of 6/10—solid but not mind-blowing. On the relationship wrecker scale (couch score 1-5), Michael says 1 (chill), Suzy says 2 (a tad sneaky). Learning curve? Time sink 1—easy, just one or two games to get it, no need for endless YouTube tutorials.
Wrapping up with our Last Call, we spotlight cool Kickstarter games! This episode, it’s Botany: Floral Dragons at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/duxsomnium/botany-floral-dragons. Now, onto the drink of the day: We’re tasting the Clown Car – German Chocolate Cake from 93 Octane Brewery in Elmhurst, IL. This cream ale with a German Chocolate Cake twist brings all the sweetness, creamy mouthfeel, and hints of chocolate and coconut.
Shifting to the main event: What game are we playing? It’s “Book of Dungeon,” the puzzle book “spin-off” from the popular “Bag of Dungeon” board game. Rated 8.3/10 on BoardGameGeek, this solo fantasy adventure is all about drawing your path through 100 deadly dungeons. Slay monsters, dodge traps, and hunt for treasure – all you need is a pencil, dice, and some courage!
Designed by Russ Law, Tim Sharville, and Paul Sharville, with art by Tim Sharville, and published by Gunpowder Studios. It’s a drawing game with grid movement mechanics, perfect for solo gamers or couples dipping into quick tabletop sessions.
How to play? Roll up your character from 11 fantasy types like elves, wizards, dwarves, ogres, fairies, minotaurs, halflings, and more. Assign stats and a special ability from a simple chart, then dive into the dungeons. Roll dice to lay paths, draw them out, face monsters or traps, grab items, and quest for the Ring before battling the Red Dragon at the exit. Every dungeon is a self-contained puzzle – survive, make brave choices, and escape with your life! No expansions listed yet, but this one’s got replayability for days in the solo board game category.
We chat about how it plays with two players (spoiler: it’s mainly solo, but we adapt for couples), our fun scores (on a 1-10 scale – mine’s TBD, Suzy’s too), and the couch score for relationship wrecking potential (1-5, low drama here). Learning the rules? It’s a time sink of 1 – no problem after one or two games, no need for endless YouTube tutorials.
Wrapping up with the Final Sip: How’s the wine (er, beer) evolved since opening? And our Last Call: We scout Kickstarter and Gamefound for the coolest upcoming games, like “Fighting Fantasy Quest – The Warlock of Firetop Mountain” from Ulisses Spiele. Game We’re Playing:Bosworth (1998)A chaotic 2-4 player chess variant where pieces are cards drawn randomly from your personal pile. Same classic chess pieces (pawns, knights, rooks, bishops, queen, king), but with twists: pawns move/capture sideways too, kings can capture their own pieces to escape check, and it’s all about multiplayer mayhem on a 6×6 board with blocked corners and face-down covers. Goal? Checkmate everyone else’s kings—last king standing wins!

????️ Episode 97: Beer & Bread & ButterWelcome to Meeples & Wine, the podcast of board game reviews for couples, with a drink in hand! I’m Michael and I’m joined by Suzy. Today we are balancing our pallets and our game boards with a “harmonious” pairing.
???? The Wine: Bread & Butter California Red BlendWe aren’t overthinking it today! Our pick is the Bread & Butter California Red Blend, a classic everyday red that’s all about relaxed vibes.
???? The Game: Beer & BreadThis week we’re hitting the fields with Beer & Bread, a multi-use card game designed for exactly two players.
The PremiseYou represent rival villages sharing a monastery’s fruitful lands. Over six years (alternating between “fruitful” and “dry”), you’ll harvest resources, brew beer, bake bread, and upgrade your facilities.
The “Twist” ????Balance is key! At the end of the sixth year, you only score the coins from the category (beer or bread) where you earned the least. If you go all-in on beer and ignore your bread, you’re going to have a bad time.

Hello everyone! We are Michael & Suzy, and welcome to Meeples & Wine—your podcast of board game reviews for couples, always with a drink in hand! What we’re drinkingWe love exploring different bottles, so what wine are we tasting today? We are sampling the Vin Glogg from the Glunz Family Winery, located in Paso Robles, CA.According to their profile, their Glögg recipe is fairly traditional. They start with a base of high-quality California port and red wine. To this, they have blended oils of citrus fruits, nuts, clove, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a couple of secret ingredients. For pairings and serving, they recommend serving it gently heated. It’s great if you add a cinnamon stick, cloves, or a twist of lemon or orange rind. Shaking Things Up with ‘The Mix’ and a MescalitaHey, and welcome back to Meeples & Wine! We’re Michael and Suzy, and this is your favorite spot for board game reviews for couples, with a drink in hand.
This week, we went fully thematic. We’re reviewing a cocktail-making board game, so naturally, we had to skip the wine and mix up a cocktail!
???? This Week’s “Wine”: The MescalitaWe’re sipping on a Mescalita, and it’s a fantastic smoky, citrusy, and spicy combo. If you want to make one at home while you listen, here’s the recipe!
What You’ll Need:
The notes for this drink suggest pairing it with smoked meats, cheese, chocolate, tropical fruits, or even spicy curries.
???? This Week’s “Meeples”: The MixThe game on our table this week is The Mix by Ruse Games.
You play as a brand-new recruit at the famous Foxtrot Bar, and your goal is to become the top mixologist. You’ll be honing your skills, learning new recipes, and serving customers to earn the most Victory Points (VP).
It’s a strategic, cocktail-themed game that blends engine building, resource management, and worker placement.
Here are the quick stats:

On your turn, you take actions like:
The “engine building” part really kicks in during the Setup phase at the end of your round. This is when you get bonuses from your Setup Track, your unique Mixologist Card, and your Technique cards.
The game end is triggered once 15 total Clients have been completed. You tally up your VP from completed orders, set collection bonuses, and remaining money, and the highest score wins!
A quick note: The rulebook we saw was still marked as a “Work in Progress,” so some final rules might change.
???? Where to Find ItWe look for the coolest games coming out on crowdfunding sites, and this one is heading to Gamefound! You can back it HERE!

Meeples & Wine: Dodging Worms and Sipping Reds in Terror Below
Hey there, Meeples & Wine fans! It’s Michael and Suzy, your go-to duo for board game reviews tailored for couples, always with a glass of something tasty in hand. Got a game or wine you think we should try? Shoot us an email at meeplesandwine@gmail.com, connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or LinkedIn, or leave a message at (707) 572-5282 or via our Speakpipe. Let’s jump into this week’s episode!
We’re kicking things off with a bold pour of Dearly Beloved I Thee Red 2023, a red blend from Lodi, California. This wine’s got serious autumn vibes with its Dia de Los Muertos-inspired bottle art. Crafted from a mix of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Tannat, and Tempranillo, it’s bursting with dark cherry, plum, and spicy vanilla oak aromas, plus flavors of blueberry, black currant, and toasted vanilla bean. It’s perfect for sipping solo or pairing with aged cheeses, roasted meats, or pasta with a hearty red sauce. We’ll check back later to see how it’s evolved since we popped the cork!
Now, let’s talk about the star of the show: Terror Below from Renegade Game Studios. Designed by Mike Elliott (known for Marvel Dice Masters and Thunderstone Quest) with art by Eric Hibbeler (Sky Team), this game has a 6.7/10 rating on BoardGameGeek and a light 1.94/5 complexity, playable by 1-5 players. In Terror Below, you’re racing through the Nevada desert, collecting Worm Eggs, delivering them for bounties, and maybe even hunting giant W.O.R.M.s (Weapons of Remote Massacre) if you’re feeling brave. The catch? Moving fast attracts those vicious underground worms, so strategy is key!
Here’s how it plays: your goal is to hit 20 Victory Points first by collecting and delivering Eggs, completing bounties, or slaying worms. Each turn, you play a Vehicle card to distract a worm, moving its Target token to keep it off your tail. Then, you spend Action Points to move your pawn, clear rubble, pick up Eggs, or deliver them to Locations for points. Special card abilities add some flair, and you refill your hand to three cards at the end. Between turns, worms might attack, dropping Eggs and Rubble—or worse, catching you in a fight. If you’re armed with Weapon or Item cards, you can hunt the worm for a VP or bounty; if not, your Leader might bite the dust and you’ll respawn with a new one. It’s a wild mix of action points, dice rolling, grid movement, and pick-up-and-deliver mechanics with variable player powers for extra spice. Oh, and there’s a Hidden Cache Expansion if you want more chaos!
Before we sign off, we’re hyped about some upcoming games we found on crowdfunding. Check out Dice Throne Vanguard on Kickstarter and Trenchcoat Raccoons: A Chaotic, Fail-Forward Heist RPG by OneShot TPK on Gamefound. Next week, we’ll be diving into another game—stay tuned for details!
If you enjoyed this episode, share it with a friend and let us know what you want us to play or sip next at meeplesandwine@gmail.com, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, or via (707) 572-5282 or Speakpipe. Meeples & Wine: A Tactical Sip and BattleHey there, friends! It’s Michael and Suzy, your hosts of Meeples & Wine, the podcast where we review board games perfect for couples, with a drink in hand to keep things fun. We love hearing from you, so drop us a line at meeplesandwine@gmail.com, connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or LinkedIn, or leave a voicemail at (707) 572-5282 or via our Speakpipe.
Also we’ll be at Lodge Con on November 1st! It’s at Will County Fairgrounds Atrium
710 S. West St., Peotone Illinois!
Let’s dive into this week’s episode!
Sipping Something SpecialToday, we’re pouring a delightful wine to set the mood for game night. It’s WATER from the fridge, hailing from our kitchen. We’ve had quite a few Oktoberfest celebrations in the last few weeks, and for our own health and ability to function we have decided to skip the tasting for this episode. Remember everyone, re-hydrate!
Game Night: Pixel TacticsThis week, we’re playing Pixel Tactics, a head-to-head tactical card game that’s all about outsmarting your partner. You can find it on BoardGameGeek, though sadly, it’s no longer in print from Level 99 Games. Designed by D. Brad Talton, Jr. (the mind behind BattleCON Fighting System) and with art by Fábio Fontes and Maciej Mutwil, this game has a 6.8/10 rating on BGG and a medium-light complexity of 2.62/5. It’s strictly for two players, which makes it perfect for our couples’ game night.
So, what’s Pixel Tactics all about? Picture a pixelated battlefield where you and your opponent each command a 25-card deck. You secretly choose a Leader card to anchor your strategy, and their unique abilities shake up how every other card in your deck works. Each card can be played in three ways: as a Leader to start the match, as a one-time Order for a quick effect, or as a Hero placed in a 3×3 grid around your Leader. Heroes’ powers change depending on their position—Vanguard (front), Flank (sides), or Rear (back)—so placement is everything.
The game plays out in a series of matches, either best-of-3 or best-of-5. Each match has rounds split into three waves (Vanguard, Flank, Rear), where you take turns making moves like drawing cards, recruiting Heroes, attacking, playing Orders, clearing fallen Heroes (aka corpses), or shuffling your grid around. Combat’s a blast, with melee attacks hitting the closest enemy in a column, ranged attacks sniping anyone (unless blocked by a Hero with Intercept), or special attack powers for extra flair. The goal? Take down your opponent’s Leader to claim Trophies. First to two or three Trophies wins the game. Oh, and if you’re losing, you get to draw extra cards in later matches to even the odds—pretty clever!
There are tons of expansions out there, pulling in themes from video games, other board games, and even quirky crossovers. Check out the full list on BoardGameGeek if you’re curious!
How’s It Play for Couples? So, how did Pixel Tactics hold up on our game night? Michael gave it a 7/10 for fun, Suzy, on the other hand, was all in with a 9/10. As for whether it’ll wreck your relationship, we’re happy to report it’s pretty safe. Michael gave it a 2.5/5 on the couch score, Suzy agreed with a 2/5.
Learning the rules took a bit—let’s call it a 1.5/5 on the time sink scale. It’s not a quick pickup, but once you get the hang of the waves and card roles, it flows smoothly. Expect a full game to run about 30-60 minutes, perfect for a cozy night in.
Wrapping UpBefore we sign off, let’s talk about what’s coming up. We’re super excited about Wizard Community College by David Marron, a cool project we found on Kickstarter. Next week, we’re diving into Terror Below from Renegade Game Studios—check out more details here.

That’s all for now, folks! Keep rolling dice, sipping wine, and enjoying those game nights. See you next time on Meeples & Wine! Buh-Bye!
First things first—what’s in the glass? We cracked open a bottle of Junmai Ginjo Super-Premium Sake, aka TYKU Black from the TY KU Sake Brewery. Brewed in Japan and bottled in Ewing, NJ (fancy, right?), this bad boy clocks in at 15.5% ABV with a 60% polish ratio—meaning they’ve shaved down the rice to unlock those silky flavors. We’re talking rich texture, hints of natural sweetness, peach, and vanilla on the nose. Over 200 flavor components and higher amino acids make it a killer white wine stand-in.
Pairing-wise? Oh man, it’s perfect for full-flavored seafood, marinated proteins, or oven-roasted dishes. We imagined it with some grilled salmon or teriyaki chicken while plotting our next move. Pro tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, grab a bottle here on their site and let it breathe a bit. By the end of the episode, that final sip? Still smooth as ever—no harsh changes, just pure elegance. Cheers to that!
The Game: Kiri-ai: The Duel – Clash of the Card-Programming TitansNow, onto the star of the show: Kiri-ai: The Duel, a super-quick two-player brawler from designer Kamibayashi (with art by Unreliable Wizard) and publisher Mugen Gaming (US distribution via Lucky Duck Games, the folks behind Flamecraft). “Kiri-ai” is a badass compound word—”kiri” for “cut” or “sword,” and “ai” for “meeting” or “clash.” Basically, it’s the poetic way to say “let’s throw down.”
This one’s all about programmed movement and rock-paper-scissors tension. You’ve got a hand of cards for moves, attacks, and special strikes on a simple battlefield. Each round, you both secretly play two cards face down (the one closest to the battlefield goes first), then reveal and resolve ’em one by one. Advance, retreat, strike high or low—land two damaging hits on your opponent’s samurai, and boom, victory. BGG rates it a solid 7.1 with a light 1.42/5 complexity, so it’s accessible but sneaky strategic.
Quick Rules Rundown (No Spoilers, Promise) Components: 16 cards total (2 samurai, 10 actions, 4 specials), plus a battlefield card (standard or advanced side). * Setup: Pick your color (Red or Blue Samurai), slap down the battlefield, deal 5 action cards each, snag a random special attack, and ditch the extra. Start in Heaven stance, three spaces apart. * Play: Program your two cards, reveal ’em. Movement first, then attacks. No passing your foe—if you try, you cozy up in the same space. Specials like Kesa or Counterattack add that “oh snap” factor—one use only, then they’re gone. * Endgame*: Return your first card to hand, bench the second for the next round. Rinse, repeat. Two damage? You win.
We even chatted about the Don-ten no Kiri-ai expansion variant—flip the battlefield, divvy up all three specials, pick your starting spots and stances. Bonus: Corner your opponent in their back space without dying? Instant win. Check the full deets on Mugen Gaming’s site for the nitty-gritty.
For two players? It’s chef’s kiss intimate—like a chess match with swords. Pure duel energy, no downtime, and that simultaneous reveal had us yelling “What?!” more than once. Fun factor? Let’s just say it sparked some laughs (and maybe a little trash talk). Couch-banishing potential? Low—it’s quick and fair, unless you’re really competitive.
Head over to BoardGameGeek to geek out on ratings and expansions.
Last Call: Eyes on the HorizonBefore we pour one out, our Kickstarter radar pinged on Capybaras vs Pelicans by Disco What—a wild, absurd showdown that’s got us hyped. Capybaras chilling in hot springs? Pelicans dive-bombing? Sign. Us. Up. Back it here on Kickstarter and tell us what you think!

We’re back and asking; Is Alien Fate of the Nostromo good for two players and how do you actually pronounce “Vinsobres”?
For our tasting we’ve got Trader Joe’s Reserve: Vinsobres a French wine from the southern Rhone Valley. The Vinsobres region was given its own special AOC status in 2006, putting it on par with other notable areas like Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is a blend of 52% Grenache and 48% Syrah. You can expect a spicy aroma with notes of dill, cinnamon, and clove, along with flavors of blackberry, black pepper, and licorice.
Alien: Fate of the Nostromo has been out since 2021, and has been sitting in our queue for a while. Made by Ravensburger this co-op game faces the ill fated team of the Nostromo against the Xenomorph, will the Alien win or will the crew survive?
Here’s the link to the “Directors Cut” rules that the game designer Scott Rogers put together on the Board Game Geek forums – Here’s the PDF and here’s a link to the forum THREAD. You can find out our thoughts on the ruleset in the show!
For our Last Call we’re taking a look at the new Bezier game “The Game Makers”! You want to know more about the game The Game Makers in a blog post style? Let’s dive into it.
Ever dreamed of building your own board game empire? The Game Makers lets you do just that! This game, from the designer of hits like Suburbia, is a love letter to the board gaming hobby. It’s a “meta” game where you become a board game manufacturer, racing against your opponents to create the greatest collection of games.
So, how does it work? You and the other players are represented by little forklifts (yes, forklifts!) that move around a central warehouse. On each turn, you’ll grab components to fulfill contracts and build real-world, licensed games. We’re talking about games you probably already have on your shelf, like Wingspan, Terraforming Mars, and Brass: Birmingham. It’s a really cool, nostalgic experience to “manufacture” your favorite games.
But it’s not just about collecting games. You’ll also be managing your own factory on your player board. You can use those same components you collect to upgrade your factory, unlock special abilities, and even boost your marketing tracks to score points. The game moves at a quick pace thanks to simultaneous play, so even with a larger group, you won’t be waiting long for your turn to come around.

Borsao Selección Blanco is a delightful blend of Chardonnay and Macabeo grapes. The Chardonnay brings bright, fruity aromas, while the Macabeo provides structure and body. To preserve its vibrant fruit character, the wine is aged briefly, fermenting in French oak barrels.
The Macabeo grape, also known as Viura, is a versatile white wine grape found on both sides of the Pyrenees in Spain and France. Its flavor profile is quite dynamic; when harvested early and aged in stainless steel, it can be fresh, floral, and aromatic. However, when harvested later and aged in oak, it develops a more weighty, honeyed, and nutty character. This makes it a great wine to accompany your appetizer or pair with fish like hake or monkfish. (In case you’re wondering the image below is a monkfish…)
Tonight’s game is Targi, a highly-rated 2-player board game with a BGG rating of 7.6/10 and a complexity weight of 2.34/5. Designed by Andreas Steiger and illustrated by Taira Akitsu and Franz Vohwinkel, this game is published by KOSMOS.
In Targi, you take on the role of a leader of a Tuareg tribe. Unlike other cultures, the Tuareg men, known as Targi, cover their faces while the women do not. As a tribal leader, you’ll trade goods like dates, salt, and pepper to earn gold and other benefits, all while trying to expand your tribe.
The game is played on a 5×5 grid, with 16 action spaces along the border and nine blank spaces in the center. Players take turns placing their meeples on the border spaces (avoiding corners and spaces directly across from an opponent’s meeple). Once all meeples are placed, you collect cards from the central grid that correspond to your meeple’s row and column. You can also carry out the actions on the border spaces.
We also have our eye on a cool game on Kickstarter: Camp Grizzly Second Edition by Trick or Treat Studios. After being out of print for over 10 years, this horror survival board game for 1-6 players is back. You play as camp counselors stalked by a maniac named Otis the Bear. To win, you must collect objectives to trigger one of four Finales. The game is filled with Easter eggs and lore, promising 80’s horror moments through the whole game.

This week we’re playing Radlands by Roxley Games, a two-player only card game that pits you and your opponent as rival gangs in a post-apocalyptic world! Drawing from the same deck, you’ll defend your three camps with people ranging from the super accurate sniper to the lowly punk (though, remember, PUNKS ARE PEOPLE TOO!) Find synergies and combos to do damage and eventually destroy your opponent’s camps, while launching your raiders to do direct attacks! You can find Radlands at Roxley’s page HERE. (We don’t get any commissions, just helping you find it easy!)
We’re sipping on The Culprit red blend! “The Culprit” is a fruit-forward wine with intense aromas of ripe raspberries and toasty vanilla oak. It offers rich flavors of blackberry jam and dark chocolate, framed by a velvety texture, with a long, lingering, and smooth finish.
For our Last Call, we’re discussing “The Pawn’s Gambit” a chess card game on Gamefound right now! The Pawn’s Gambit is a chess-inspired card game for up to 6 players, blending strategy and tactical duels. Players aim to checkmate rivals or be the last with a surviving king using three card types: Opening Cards, which set unique strategies with medieval characters; Piece Cards, reflecting classic chess pieces; and Imbalance Cards, depicting warfare scenarios that shift game conditions. Win by securing two rounds or outlasting opponents in a chaotic, strategic showdown. You can get notified when it launches HERE! If you love the art, as we did, you can find their Instagram HERE.

Welcome to Meeples & Wine, your podcast of board game reviews for couples, with a drink in hand!
In today’s episode, we’re tasting Clad & Cordon Vineyard’s Cordon Blue, a blueberry wine from Creal Springs, Illinois. It has a sweet and fruity profile with ripe blueberry notes. This blueberry wine pairs well with creamy desserts, various cheeses, light salads, sandwiches, and even certain meats like chicken or fish.
We’re playing Hive, an abstract board game where the goal is to trap your opponent’s Queen Bee. It’s a two-player game designed and illustrated by John Yianni, and published by Gen42 Games. Each player has 11 insect pieces, including a Queen Bee, Spiders, Beetles, Grasshoppers, and Ants, each with unique movement rules. The game is played without a board, and pieces must remain connected in a “hive”. We also discuss expansions like the Ladybug, Mosquito, and Pillbug, which add new movement abilities and strategic options to the game.
For our “Last Call” segment, we looked at “Trenchcoat Raccoons” on Gamefound, a fast, rules-light tabletop RPG about chaotic heists and cartoon logic. Players control raccoons in a stack, pretending to be a human in a trenchcoat. Next week, we’ll be reviewing Radlands by Roxley Games, a post-apocalyptic game where punk bands fight to destroy rival tribes’ camps.

What was the first and last tabletop RPG that Suzy played? Hints are: It was in 1996, it’s a fantasy/sci-fi setting and she played a Dwarf Mechanic.
The first three correct answers get the bags! Leave us a way to get in touch!
Oh, and here’s that video that Suzy was thinking about!

This episode Michael and Suzy spend their Easter afternoon playing Ruse Game’s recent release Bunny Boom, fresh out of their crowdfunding on Gamefound! Your quiet village is being overrun by hordes of soft and cuddly rabbits and you work to push as many as you can to your opponent’s board! Lay your cards down on the board to build the village, matching suits to close out the space so no more cards can be played, or don’t match suits to play that card that may win you the game, but you’ll get more bunnies as a penalty! Force your opponent to take the carrot, which adds more bunnies, and you can use the burrow and the fox to add even more buns! The one with the least bunnies wins!
We also taste a traditional Easter brunch cocktail, the mimosa, but with a twist! From Coffee and Champaign, it’s the French 75 Mimosa. With a dash of lemon juice and citrus simple syrup, along with gin this is a delicious alternative to your standard sparkling wine and orange juice. We used Conniption American Dry gin with this one, after tasting it at the local store (Thanks Paul!) it’s citrus rind and spicy nose complemented the drink nicely!
The Final Call for the week is Cleaning Service – Print and Play!

This week we play PandaSaraus Game's "Sea Salt & Paper" a nice relaxed set making game with some fantastic aquatic origami images with Sea Glass Winery's Central Coast Sauvignon Blanc. Lately we've been playing some serious "take that" games like Smash Up, we take a 180 turn with Sea Salt & Paper, where you gather shells, octupi and other sea life to gather points to win. But be careful, if your opponent thinks they've got more points they can declare "Last Chance" and put all their (and your) points on the line! We're tasting Sea Glass winery's Central Coast Sauvignon Blanc, a California white that keeps a citrus nose with a pear flavor, but keeps the bright acidity that New Zealand wines are known for. Remember that if you want to get in touch, just give us a call at (707) 572-5282!

This episode we're also not tasting a wine, but a cocktail, the Whiskey Smash (see the connection?) This simple cocktail with only a few ingredients, whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup and mint. It's easy to make and has a nice sweet/sour flavor that goes well with just chilling out and playing your favorite game. The Kickstarter last call is the Fallen London RPG based off the long running online text-based game of the same name. Meeples & Wine Episode Recap: Curious Beasts and SquarriorsIn this week’s episode, Michael and Suzy dove into the darkly whimsical pairing of the Curious Beasts Red Blend 2021 wine and the post-apocalyptic card game Squarriors. While both offerings boast intriguing packaging, they revealed some challenges beneath the surface.Wine Highlights:The duo sampled Curious Beasts, a gothic-themed red blend with bold flavors of cherry, plum, and a hint of oak and pepper. Its standout feature? A dramatic bottle design featuring skeletons in festive hats and violins. However, the wine’s origin remains as mysterious as its label; with the winery appearing inactive since 2018. While Michael described it as a great “burger and pizza wine,” the couple agreed its sweeter notes wouldn’t pair well with richer meals like lamb chops. If you’re drawn to eye-catching bottles, this one’s for you—but don’t expect to find it easily.Game Review: SquarriorsThe episode also explored the card game Squarriors, a mashup of Magic: The Gathering mechanics with a dystopian squirrel-filled universe. Set in a world where animals have gained sentience after humanity’s fall, the game combines deck-building, dice rolling, and tactical combat.Michael picked this up at a bargain from Half Price Books but discovered it’s an abandoned project, with little online support or updates since its 2017 release. While Suzy admired the stunning card art, the couple found the rules incomplete and gameplay overly complex for newcomers. With no expansions or active fan base, Squarriors remains a niche curiosity for collectors rather than a game-night staple.Final Thoughts:Michael and Suzy ended the show by reflecting on the eerie parallel between the wine and game: both are visually captivating but haunted by the specter of abandonment. While they enjoyed the experience, these might not be first picks for your next gathering.Check out the links below for more details:Learn about Squarriors on its BoardGameGeek page.Discover the (brief) history of Curious Beasts Wine on wine directory sites. And don’t miss Michael’s GameFound highlight: Christmas Rolls, a festive roll-and-write game launching soon!Tune in next week as they sip, strategize, and share more gaming and wine adventures! 🍷🐿️

With a versatile lineup of beloved characters like Buffy, Spike, Willow, and Angel, players battle it out using unique abilities, whether it’s Buffy's iconic cartwheel kick or Willow's foray into black magic. We’re back and this week we’re reviewing Rocket House Games‘ Potion Panic a frantic race to become the Alchemist a la Mode by completing potion recipe’s components, smashing vials to get more cards in your hand or to deny your opponents those super valuable crystals! Ten crystals gets you the Philosopher’s Stone, which wins you the game and grants you powers beyond explanation in the next game (well, there is a card that explains them…). How does Potion Panic rate on our Fun scale? How does is rate on our Couch Score (how likely it is for Michael to wind up sleeping on the couch due to the game?)
We also taste a 100% blueberry wine from Three Lakes Winery in Wisconsin. Made from whole ripe blueberries, this isn’t a “blueberry flavored wine beverage” but the real thing!

Title: Reviewing “The Rocketeer” – A Perfect Pairing with A Glass of Chardonnay
Hello everybody and welcome to the world of board games and fine wine, where every roll of the dice pairs perfectly with every sip of a good vintage. Now, if you’re wondering about “The Rocketeer”, it is based off a movie (which in turn was based on a comic book) about a guy named Cliff Secord who stumbled upon a jet pack and his life flipped upside down. This game has an enjoyable theme, engaging gameplay and a variety of interesting game mechanics which will keep you hooked.
It is designed by Prospero Hall (also Brian Kirk), who has previously contributed to other iconic games like Back to the Future: Back in Time and Bob Ross: Art of Chill. The game enjoys beautiful art by Henning Ludvigsen that keeps you engaged visually as you steer your way through stealing the plans from the heroes or keeping them safe from the villains before the zeppelin arrives.
Bread and Butter Winery Chardonnay 2021 ReviewLet’s shift gears and talk about the wine we paired with “The Rocketeer” – the 2021 vintage Chardonnay from Bread and Butter Winery. This Californian beauty with a golden straw hue has a distinctive Chardonnay aroma – a mix of buttery grapes with subtle hints of peaches and apples.
Upon sipping, you would notice a creamy texture with a balance of acidity and an oaky finish that lingers pleasantly in your mouth. However, letting the wine breathe is crucial to truly unlock its flavors. There is a marked richness that is not overly intense, making it perfect for a relaxed evening of board gaming.
The Verdict: Perfect Pairing for a Game NightIn conclusion, “The Rocketeer” is a delightful board game that delivers on 1930’s intrigue, tug of war strategy, and beautiful art. Paired with the Bread and Butter’s Chardonnay, it makes for an ideal game night with your significant other or a group of friends.
So, why not treat yourself to a new experience? Get your hands on “The Rocketeer” and a good-quality Chardonnay, and dive into an evening of strategic fun and good vibes. With all these ingredients at hand, you’re sure to have a memorable night!

Solo Game Exploration and Beer Tasting: ‘Onirim’ and Two Brothers Imperial Stout
Onirim: A Dreamy Solitaire AdventureIntroduction
This week I’m reviewing Onirim, a solo/cooperative card game where you navigate a mysterious labyrinth as a dreamwalker. You must escape before your dream time runs out by finding the eight oneiric doors.
Gameplay
Onirim is a set collection and deck-building game. You have a hand of five cards and must match sets of three to unlock doors. However, there are challenges:
Expansions
The second edition comes with seven expansions in the box, adding new mechanics and challenges like manipulating the deck, time bombs, and unreliable allies.
Overall Impressions
I enjoyed Onirim but found it slightly frustrating due to not having resources near the end of the game. I rate it 7.5 out of 10. I picked this one up at Dane’s Games in Geneva, IL.

Meeples and Wine: Exploring Bluffing Mechanics and the Board Game ‘Chameleon’
Introduction:
Welcome to Meeples and Wine, Now Pod Pomo 2023! Michael is going to dive into bluffing games and explore one particular game that has captured the attention of many tabletop enthusiasts – Chameleon. But before we get into the gameplay, let’s introduce Meeples and Wine, our original podcast where my wife Susie and I, Michael, review board and tabletop games for couples. We not only analyze how well they play with two players, but also determine their level of excitement, complexity, and even their potential impact on relationships. Join us as we embark on this gaming adventure!
Bluffing Games vs. Social Deduction Games:
You might be wondering, what exactly is the difference between bluffing games and social deduction games? In social deduction games, players strive to conceal their true identities. Whether you are a murderer or a werewolf, your goal is to mislead others and divert attention away from your true intentions. This usually involves lying and twisting the truth in order to convince others that you are not the villain. On the other hand, bluffing games involve elaborating on your beliefs and confidently bluffing about the truth. One popular example is Balderdash, where players must bluff their way through defining words. The objective is to convince the group that your definition is correct, even if it isn’t.
Let’s Talk Chameleon:
Today, we are going to focus on one specific bluffing game called Chameleon. In this game, one player takes on the role of the chameleon, while the other players try to figure out who it is. Designed for four to six players, Chameleon brings a unique twist to the world of bluffing games. The objective for the non-chameleon players is to unmask the chameleon without revealing the secret word. Meanwhile, the chameleon aims to blend in with the others, avoid detection, and correctly guess the secret word.
Gameplay Mechanics:
To set up the game, players are assigned code cards that determine their identity. The chameleon receives a blue chameleon card, while the others receive different code cards that feature dice notations. The dice rolls dictate the code for each player, adding an element of randomness and excitement to the game. The dealer then reveals a topic card, such as “bread,” and all players, except the chameleon, must select a word that corresponds to the topic.
Blending In and Providing Clues:
The non-chameleon players now examine their code cards to determine the secret word. The chameleon, without knowing the secret word, must pretend to be part of the group and provide clues that align with the word. Round after round, players take turns offering clues related to the secret word, while the chameleon strategically tries to blend in. For example, if the secret word is “bread,” a non-chameleon player might say “yeast” as a clue, which is directly linked to bread-making. The chameleon must think quickly and provide clues that match the secret word without giving away their lack of knowledge.
Voting and Revealing the Chameleon:
Once all players have given their clues, it’s time to vote. Players discuss and vote for the player they suspect is the chameleon. The player with the most votes reveals their code card. If it’s the chameleon card, the chameleon gets one last chance to guess the secret word correctly and escape capture. The game continues with the previous chameleon becoming the dealer, and a new chameleon card is introduced.
Chameleon is a thrilling and engaging bluffing game that guarantees hours of fun for friends and family. It requires strategic thinking, quick wit, and the ability to maintain a straight face. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, those who enjoy the challenge of bluffing and deducing their opponents’ intentions will find Chameleon to be an excellent addition to their gaming collection. So gather your friends, put on your best poker face, and embark on an unforgettable journey through the world of bluffing and deception!

Title: Unveiling the Thrill: Hidden Movement Games!
Hey there, fellow gamers! Welcome to Meeples and Wine, NaPodPomo 2023. Before we dive into today’s game, let me introduce you to Meeples and Wine! I’m Michael, and together with my wife Suzy, we review board and tabletop games for couples. We see how well they play with just two players, how fun and challenging they are, and yeah, sometimes we even test if they can ruin a marriage (just kidding!). Head over to www.meeplesandwine.fun for game reviews, wine tastings, and more. Plus, you can leave us a voicemail through our SpeakPipe link – we’d love to feature your questions on the show! Alright, let’s jump into the awesome world of hidden movement games!
Hidden movement games add a whole new level of excitement to your game nights. You’ve got one (or all) players who can’t see what the others are doing, which kicks up the suspense factor big time. Picture this: you’re hunting down an elusive character while they cleverly maneuver through the game board, leaving just enough clues to keep you guessing. It’s all about strategy and outsmarting your opponents.
Now, let’s talk about some of the standout hidden movement games. First up, we have the classic Scotland Yard. It’s been around since the ’80s and is still a ton of fun. You and your friends play as detectives from Scotland Yard, going head-to-head with Mr. X, who’s roaming the streets of London using taxis, buses, and even the tube. Working together, you’ll need to connect the dots, piece together the clues, and track down Mr. X before he slips away.
For those craving a bigger challenge, check out Mister X. This game takes the Scotland Yard gameplay and moves to all of Europe! Instead of limiting the action to London, you get to embark on a thrilling chase across the entire continent. Mr. X has an arsenal of transportation options at his disposal, and it’s up to the detectives to coordinate their efforts and catch him in the act. It’s one wild ride, let me tell you!
Last but not least, there’s Clue: The Great Museum Caper. Imagine being a security guard in an art museum, desperately trying to prevent a crafty thief from pilfering precious artworks. The tension builds as paintings disappear and guards scramble to catch a glimpse of the elusive culprit. It’s a unique spin on hidden movement games, adding elements of deduction and observation to keep you on your toes.
So, grab your friends and get ready for a gaming experience like no other with hidden movement games! Scotland Yard, Mr. X, and Clue: The Great Museum Caper are just a taste of the excitement that awaits. Check out our podcast at Meeples and Wine, and remember to play fair, have fun, and may the best detective prevail! Cheers!
That’s it for today’s game mechanics. Stay tuned for more thrilling adventures in the world of tabletop gaming. Thanks for joining us on Meeples and Wine, Now Pod Pomo 2023. Happy gaming, everyone!

In these games, players are secretly assigned roles, some good, some neutral, and some bad. The good guys need to work together to identify and eliminate the bad guys, the neutral players decide who they're going to back, while the bad guys strive to sow discord and achieve their own nefarious goals. The beauty of social deduction games lies in the uncertainty. You never know who to trust, and every accusation, every move, could be a ploy to deceive. This constant state of suspicion and second-guessing is what keeps players hooked, coming back for more every time. One Night: Ultimate WerewolfOne Night: Ultimate Werewolf is a fast-paced, easy-to-learn social deduction game that's perfect for a quick game night or as an introduction to the genre. Players take on roles like Werewolves, Villagers, Seer, and the Drunk, and more, each with their own special abilities. The game plays over a single night, with players taking turns waking up and performing actions with the assistance of either a game master or by using the handy app that you can download. As the night progresses, the Werewolves try to stay hidden from the Villagers, while the Villagers try to identify and eliminate the Werewolves. One Night: Ultimate Werewolf is a fantastic choice for groups of all sizes, from small gatherings to larger parties. It's quick, chaotic, and always entertaining. The Thing: The BoardgameIf you're looking for a more immersive, thematic social deduction experience, The Thing: The Boardgame is the perfect choice. Based on the classic John Carpenter film, The Thing, this game captures the paranoia and suspense of the movie in a solid tabletop experience. Players take on the roles of the researchers stationed in an Antarctic research base, so you've got Macready, Nauls, Windows and the rest of the team from the movie. Among them is the Thing, an alien shapeshifter that can perfectly imitate any human. The Thing's goal is to eliminate the researchers and escape the base, while the researchers must identify and eliminate the Thing before it's too late. The Thing: The Boardgame is a tense, atmospheric experience that will keep you guessing until the very end. It's a must-play for fans of the movie and social deduction games alike.Social Deduction RecommendationsWhether you're a seasoned player or a newcomer to the genre, there's a game out there for you. Here are a few more recommendations to get you started:The Resistance (Avalon Hill): A classic hidden role game of deception and intrigue.Coup (Indie Boards and Cards): A fast-paced, card-based game of bluffing and deduction.Blood on the Clocktower (The Pandemonium Institute): An in-depth game with multiple roles which can play up to 20!So gather your friends, grab a glass of wine, and dive into the world of social deduction games. You're in for a night of suspense, deception, and fun!

Today we are talking about tile-laying games. Tile-laying games are a type of board game where players build the board by placing tiles on it. This can be done to create a city, a farm, a forest, or any other kind of landscape or scene. Look for scoring opportunities. When placing your tiles, try to think about how you can score points in multiple ways. For example, if you are placing a tile that completes a road, also see if it can help you complete a city or monastery.Be aware of your opponents' strategies. Try to anticipate what your opponents are trying to do and block them from completing their goals. For example, if you see that your opponent is close to completing a long road, try to place a tile that will prevent them from doing so.Don't be afraid to adapt. As the game progresses, the board will change and you may need to adapt your strategy. Be willing to change your plans if necessary. Here are some additional tips for the three specific games mentioned in the podcast:Carcassonne: Try to save your meeples for the later stages of the game, when there are more opportunities to score points. Also, don't forget to consider the placement of your meeples when placing your tiles.Azul: Try to plan ahead and think about how you can complete multiple patterns with a single tile placement. Also, be aware of the different scoring conditions for each pattern.Kingdomino: Try to draft tiles that have a variety of features. This will give you more flexibility when placing your tiles and make it more difficult for your opponents to block you. Also, don't forget to consider the placement of your castles when drafting tiles.
Hey everybody, and welcome to NaPodPoMo day two! Today we're talking about worker placement games.Worker placement games are known for their strategic depth and replayability. With so many different options available, players must carefully weigh the pros and cons of each action before making a decision. Worker placement games can also be very competitive, as players must try to outmaneuver their opponents in order to get the best resources and spaces. Here are a few beginner-friendly worker placement games:Stone AgeChampions of MidgardNusfjordWingspanHere are a few tips for playing worker placement games:Claim key spaces early. The best spaces on the board are often the ones that give you the most resources or allow you to perform the most powerful actions. Try to claim these spaces early in the game so that you can benefit from them throughout the game.Be flexible. Don't be afraid to change your strategy if you need to. If you see that an opponent is taking a certain strategy, try to find a way to counter it.Don't overextend yourself. Focus on one or two strategies and stick with them. Trying to do too much will only spread you too thin and make it difficult to win.Block other players. If you see that an opponent is about to take a space that you need, don't be afraid to block them. It's a dog-eat-dog world out there! With a little practice, you'll be a worker placement master in no time!
Deck Building Games, sometimes known as Card Drafting, is a game mechanic where players take turns selecting cards from a common pool. The cards that are available change each round, as players take cards and pass the remaining cards to the next player. This creates a dynamic and interactive game experience, as players must carefully consider their own picks and how they can deny their opponents the cards they want.Simple strategy for card drafting gamesPick the cards that are most valuable to you. This may mean picking cards that give you immediate points, cards that help you build your engine, or cards that synergize with other cards in your hand.Be aware of what other players are picking. Try to anticipate what cards your opponents need and pick those cards first, if possible. This will deny them the cards they need to win and give you a leg up in the game.Don't be afraid to change your strategy. As the draft progresses, the cards that are available will change. Be willing to adapt your strategy based on what cards are left in the pool and what cards your opponents have picked. Here are some additional tips for card drafting games:Pay attention to the order of the draft. If you're picking later in the draft, you may have to be more flexible with your picks.Don't be afraid to hate draft. Sometimes, the best card to pick is the card that your opponent needs the most. This can be a great way to deny them the cards they need to win.Have fun! Heading in for the haunting season we have our first on show mixed drink and get into the world of cocktails with "The Gargoyle." This classic 1920s drink takes center stage as we uncover the history of the Gargoyle Club, a legendary haunt for bohemian aristocrats and socialites founded by David Tennant. We discuss the picture of this iconic club's ambiance and its transformation over the years, including its famous elevator and notable visitors, from Fred Astaire to Nick Cave. We also discuss the interesting history of the Gargoyle Club, emphasizing its significance in the 1920s social scene and it's place in recent history. In this episode, we dove into the world of Disney's Gargoyles Awakening board game, and it was quite the adventure. Gargoyles fans from the '90s will appreciate the nostalgic trip back to New York with Goliath and the gang. The game had a good balance of strategy and action, although it could get a bit frustrating at times, especially when playing with just two players. The villains, particularly Demona, seemed a bit overpowered, making our battles challenging. We tried various strategies, like doubling up on characters, but it was still tough. The game's components, including the detailed plastic figurines and the 3D buildings, added to the immersion. However, the board felt a bit cramped, and the rules could have been clearer. Overall, it's a fun game, but it's best enjoyed with more players to balance the action. We gave it a rating of 6.5 out of 10 and concluded that it's worth a try for Gargoyles fans, even though it may have a few rough edges. For our Last Call, Suzy has found a captivating mystery game called "The Great Tea Robbery," which offers an immersive mystery adventure. This game features unique components like tea, porcelain bowls and cups, and a wooden box filled with intriguing ephemera. Players will unravel the mystery while retracing Robert Fortune's journey through China, adding a historical and thrilling twist to the gameplay. It's a high-quality experience with plenty of replayability, making it worth the investment.Next, Michael discusses "Faceless Amusement Park," a game that takes an eerie turn as players try to reclaim stolen memories from a demon haunting the park. The game uses a unique magnetic compass mechanism to control elements on the board. While the concept and visuals are appealing, we're uncertain about how well the magnet feature functions in gameplay. He also mentions a related game, "Faceless," with a similar magnetic mechanism. Overall, it's an intriguing game with some mysteries of its own.

Ever wonder about the creatures from beyond your sight and what madness lies in even trying to discover the truth behind the veil, and also what would be a nice refreshing beer to drink while doing it? Well this week we review both the beer Tiki Tongue Liar from Miskatonic Brewery and the board game Gates of Delirium from Renegade Game Studios. The beer is described as a soft, tart, and prickly kettle sour with pineapple flavors, complemented by a slightly salty and sweet body. The dry hop of Sabro adds a light coconutty taste to the beer.
Moving on to the game review, Gates of Delirium is a game where players embark on a quest to uncover the truth. They search for ancient runes, lost pages of a scattered tome, and investigate the rumors of evil monstrosities calling for their return. As players progress, they become less connected to reality and experience strange occurrences, losing track of time and feeling the whispers of secret gates to another world growing stronger.
The game revolves around split action cards, with one side representing sanity and the other insanity. Each round, one player decides whether the round will be sane or insane, and all players must play the corresponding side of their cards. During sane rounds, players search for maps, lost pages, and assign investigators to aid their cause. In contrast, during insane rounds, players collect ancient runes and work towards building gates to release the very monstrosities their sane selves have been trying to prevent.
The objective is to earn the most victory points by the time the last monstrosity is released. Michael and Suzy provide their thoughts on the game, discussing its mechanics, gameplay experience, and overall enjoyment. Listeners can gain insights into both the beer and the board game, making it an entertaining episode for couples interested in board game reviews while enjoying a drink.

Ever have a great game idea, one that combines pirates, horror, sci-fi and had characters and items that really drew you in? Ever want to play a game where you pitch such a game? Well, we’ve got great news for you, Gamestormer exists. Created by Jon Spike this “tableau filling” game has you filling the role a fledgling Gamestormer who is attempting to impress the Elder Gamestormer with a new game idea. Part strategy and part social game you’ll find yourself drawing Items, Storyline and Mechanic cards to fill your tableau, while using the card actions to draw or redraw cards to fit your theme for points. There’s also another way to win, where you and an opponent face of in the Arena to pitch your game idea to the Elder to win. It’s a fun game for those players that enjoy storytelling and open-ended goals, and also is wonderfully illustrated by Viktoriya Fajardo.
We also taste Two Brother’s Meyer Lemon and Vodka seltzer canned cocktails, a mix of their artisan vodka and Meyer lemon juice. The biggest difference on this one compared to other seltzers on the market is the fact they’re 100% vodka, no “malt beverage” in this one.

This week we get our wands out and DUEL! It’s time for Renegade Game’s Duel of Wands, a wand combat game based in the Kids on Brooms world, a collaborative RPG where witches and wizards in training at a magical school where anything could happen! Promising theme, sounds like something that could make a popular movie or book series, someone should get on that.
We’re also tasting Broken Brix‘s PB&J Mead, made locally in St. Charles, IL, and also where we buy our brewing equipment for our first batch of Blueberry Mead! If you’re looking for gear or advice, this is a great place to go!
We’re also going to be at the Midwest Gaming Classic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this weekend! We’ll be touring the dealer hall and demoing games to talk about when we’re at the Bonus Stage later that day! (3:30!) We’ll do some Q&A about gaming and podcasting, review a game we demoed, teach you how to do a wine tasting and have some goodies to hand out! We hope to see you there!

This weekend Suzy and Michael went to see the Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves preview! Here’s our review as both a life long gamer and D&D fan, and the take from someone who just loves heist movies! We’re all over the world of Faerun tonight, but beware there be spoilers here!

This week Michael and Suzy take on the high-flying world of zeppelin racing! Yes, we’re playing Quicksilver a tabletop game for 2 to 6 people that has you zipping your dirigibles high above the city of Paradise Falls. This game by Split Second Games packs all the thrill and excitement that you remember from the zeppelin races of your youth! Is that a thing? Let’s pretend that’s a thing.
We also taste a California Chardonnay from The Seeker, a nice golden chard that describes itself as “aromas of ripe pineapple, golden apple, Anjou pear and guava with hints of vanilla and baking spice.”

This week we’re getting QUANTIUM! We’re playing Bezier Games’ Cat In The Box, a trick taking card game where you both know and don’t know the cards in your hand until they’re played. We also taste Juggernaut Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon, which is now number one for the most aggressive wine label we’ve seen.
We’ve also started up a Vivino account, and will be adding all the wines we’ve tasted, you can find our profile HERE!

Howdy pardners! Welcome to the Weird West, where the Reckoners are comin’, that there mad scientist down the street has some real odd noises comin’ from his barn, and tumbleweeds can actually kill ya! Sorry, tumblebleed’ll kill ya! Yes, welcome to the world of Doomtown: Reloaded a living card game by AEG where you face off as one of four starting factions. Will you play the Law Dogs, the (more or less) good guys who keep the peace here in the town of Gomorra or will you face off against them as the Sloane Gang, and take over the town through fear? You can even play as the Morgan Cattle Company and fund mad scientists to create gadgets from the far side of your imagination, and if you’ve got the hankern’ you can throw down as the Fourth Ring, a circus of hucksters, harrowed and abominations. We got something for everyone here!
We also take few glasses of TX Blended Whiskey for a spin on this one, because everyone knows Cowboys Don’t Drink Chard. This is a nice smooth whiskey made at Firestone & Robertson Distilling in Fort Worth, TX, where no one has been called out to town square for a shootout in many years, or so I’ve been told. We sip these from Mike’s Frontier Casino glasses from the now defunct wild west themed resort, so it’s all spurs and traildust in this week’s episode!

Suzanne and Michael are back from attending Polar Vortex! We had a great conversation on two player games with Graham from Fair Game and picked up The Fox in the Forest from Renegade Game Studios and Cat in the Box from Bezier Games! We got a hand painted dice tray from Joe Abboreno, check out his stuff on the shop on Threadless! Also check out the cool crocheted plushies and bags from Candi Coated Creations!, like the super cute Futurama brain slug!
We’ve also played the two-player trick-taking game Foxes in the Forest for this week’s show. It’s a twist on the standard idea of the genre, adding special cards that allow you to manipulate your hand, change the trump suit, and more in order to adjust to two players. But winning isn’t everything! You can win by losing, or lose by winning too much! If you get greedy and win more than 9 tricks you’ll score nothing, but if you stay humble and win three or less you’ll finish the hand with 6! It’s more than matching the trump suit or taking the trick, there’s a ton of strategy with the action cards, and a ton of replay value!
We taste Dr. Loosen’s Riesling, a Riesling from the Mosel valley. This one was suggested by Dan from the Midwest Gaming Classic!

This week we finally picked up a copy of Dice Throne, the Cursed Pirate vs Artificer box! We played a few games we realized that a level 4 and level 6 heroes were probably not the best ones to learn with, but we persevered. The game plays similar to an old favorite of ours, Magic: The Gathering but with tokens and dice and some really fantastic art by Manny Trembley.
The coolest thing about Dice Throne (Follow them on Twitter @DiceThrone) is how you can combine all the decks together. Would you like to play Gunslinger vs Ninja, or Treant vs Pyromancer? Well, you can, all the characters are able to be played against each other or in teams. We’ve seen the Battle Chests, and for $99 getting all the fighters in one spot is a great deal. (No Amazon link in these notes, mainly because it’s got nothing but scalpers selling the Battle Chests at $200!)
We’re attending the Polar Vortex game convention this coming weekend also. There’s a bunch of game companies that will be there like Looney Labs, and artists like Joe Abboreno! We’ll be searching out new games to play, and maybe some interviews too!
We’re also tasting 19 Crimes Red Blend, you know that wine brand with Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart on the bottles? We picked this one because it’s aged in rum barrels and since there’s a pirate in the game, well, rum.

So, You’ve Been Eaten a game with rules written like stereo instructions (callback for those who remember stereos and Beetlejuice), and finds you as either the giant space slug, or the miner trying to escape said slug with crystals in hand, is the game for this show. We’re also drinking St. Christopher 2021 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett, our first German wine!

Welcome to Meeples & Wine! This week we’re taking our spelling skills to task with the game Letterflip from (the now defunct) Out of the Box Publishing! They’re the team that introduced us to Apples 2 Apples, among other games! But yes, we’re playing the tile-flippy game that’s pretty much Guess Who? with less strategy. Also, we’re tasting Aldi’s Quarter Cut Bourbon Barrell Chardonnay!

This week Michael and Suzy talk about the Iello game “The Phantom Society” where you either play as the ghost hunters or the specters themselves, all the while tearing through a hotel. Other discoveries include the tasting of the La Cornada Crianza Tempranillo found at Aldi, and the fact that Suzy has never heard of the Great Space Coaster or of the great Gary Gnu.

Welcome to Meeples & Wine where BETRAYAL hangs in the air with…purple dogs and French wine? Did we mention the BETRAYAL?! This week we have our first guest couple, Tim & Erin, to play Betrayal at House on the Hill, where Tim discovers a witty name is no defense against a shovel, and a spear, and a mystical elevator. We also taste a bottle of Laurent Dublanc Cotes-du-Rhone, a nice dry red for those cold January nights.
Betrayal at House on the Hill 2nd edition is the game this week, one wrought with hidden doors, traps and omens at every turn, and just when you least expect it you discover the traitor among you! This tile laying game builds a haunted house that up to six people can explore, discovering new rooms, finding items that may help or hinder you, and as more omens arise the haunt begins!
Tim & Erin are long time friends of Michael & Suzy and also part of Purple Dog Records in Naperville Illinois! If you’re looking for newly released vinyl, a specific album or have some you’d like to sell, that’s the place to go! They’re at 231 S Washington St Suite 105, Naperville, IL 60540. They’re on Twitter and Facebook too!

Welcome to the new year and we are back, as refreshed as we’re going to get, and ready to taste a new bottle of wine and play a game that won’t end up with you and yours in marriage counselling! We recap our month off dealing with racing a storm to southern Illinois for Christmas, playing Kingdominoes and Spaceteam while we were down there, deer sightings and Leg Lamp revelations!
We’re trying to do Dry January by not drinking for the whole month, and to stay with it we try FRE Red Blend, that’s a Alcohol Removed Wine for all you not in the know. Place your bets now on how well this goes off with Michael & Suzy.
The Cutest End of The World You’ve Ever Seen.
This week we’re reviewing Happy Little Dinosaurs from Unstable Games, how the rules scale down to a two player game, where you can find the rules FAQ for the game, and we introduce version one of the Marriage Counseling Game Score. This ranges from “That Was Fun” to “Two CHRISTMASES!” on a scale of 1 to 10, but we’re workshopping it now, it may be 1 through 5 next week but let us know what you think about the scale at our Speakpipe link below or if you’re on mobile just tap the link here!
Well, it is and it isn't. #NaPodPomo is done, we have completed 30 shows in 30 days with two hours to go, and Michael & Suzy are done. With posting daily that is, we're moving to a weekly show, with more time to prepare, and get some of the cool things that we've wanted to done! In this episode we talk about all such things, like demo videos, tours of wineries, shows at local game stores and having other gaming couples over to play! Do you have an idea for the weekly show, then tap that voicemail link below and let us know! We'll be back soon!
It's episode 29, almost to the end of #NaPodPoMo, and we're sending Love Letters to Batman! This show we're talking about "Papa's Game", the trick taking game that Suz's dad loves and loves to change the rules on. Also, Michael is sipping Tuaca, while Suzy pounds down a tall glass of NyQuil! The game of the show is Batman Love Letter, that reskinned version of the original Love Letter with all your favorite villains and heroes!
Welcome to almost the end of the #NaPodPoMo month with episode 28! This time it's Michael rolling solo one last time, with only 2 shows left to go before midnight! It's a nail-biter of will they/won't they?! He's tasting Bell's Black Hearted Ale, a darker than sin, IPA that in all honesty he didn't think that he would enjoy, spoilers. He's talking about the card game Brawl from 1999, a "A real-time card game of brawling martial artists." where you've got everything from goth-waitresses, to catgirl fighters all going at it in a free for all fight to win three bases! It doesn't sound too crazy, but considering that every game lasts roughly 30 seconds, it gets nuts pretty fast!
It's episode 27 of Meeples & Wine and Michael is still recording on his own, she's coming back I SWEAR! But this episode he samples a glass of Chanmé Méchant Pinot Noir 2020, a nice dry wine that is just begging to be paired with fettuccini and cream sauce or a nice thick stew. He also opines about mobile gaming and how that's changed for him since his first Palm Pilot and the homebrew games that used Final Fantasy sprites and old text based adventures like Zork!
He goes on to tell of playing Doom RPG on his Sony Ericsson W600i (I LOVED THAT PHONE). Finally he gives his current top three mobile games, which are listed below!

Hello and welcome to Meeples & Wine number 26! Only four left for #napodpomo, which would be awesome if we actually had 4 days left! This show we have Daughter "first out of the gates" Katie, who's joining Michael in talking about her favorite games for playing with the family. (This is also her first podcast hosting experience!) We're tasting Flying Cauldron Butterscotch Beer, it's a NA drink that has nothing to do with any Wizarding World out there. The game of the day is Anomia, a fast moving card game where things that you could have totally recalled a moment ago leave your brain completely!
Hello and welcome to episode 25! Tonight Michael is going it alone, and tasting Unicorn Fight Club from Mill Stream Brewing! The game of the day is Welcome to the Dungeon from Iello Games!
Today Michael is running alone, as Suzy is out of town, though he will be tasting the "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha" Marshmallow Lager from Millstream Brewing Co.! He's also talking about the card game "Exploding Kittens" the card game!
This episode, Michael is still drinking 3 Floyds craft cocktails and has moved on to the Negroni, while not loved all that much by Suzy, it's still a solid drink! (If this is too ginny for you try an Americano!) We discuss who you'd like to have when facing off against terrorists, demons or aliens, Jack Burton, MacReady, or John McClane?
We also talk about tabletop games based on movies, such as Die Hard: The Nakatomi Heist, The Thing:The Board Game, and Big Trouble in Little China: The Board Game!
Welcome to Meeples & Wine! The show that delves into the games that won't throw your marriage into a therapy session! Today (22 of 30 shows for #NaPodPoMo!) we're talking about our earliest memories of going to the movies and movies based on board games! Yes, we know we're supposed to be giving game reviews, but with the month almost over, we're running out of ideas! (BTW, if you have any ideas, send us an email at meeplesandwine@gmail.com!)
Today we delve into why Michael is so screwed up, due to the PTSD of watching Pete's Dragon and Ghost Story at an early age! In the meantime Suzy gets to watch her cousin freak out at ET flying those bikes! We also taste another 3 Floyds Craft Cocktails, this time it's Whiskey Peach Smash, the discuss three movies based on tabletop games. Don't forget to find out older shows at https://meeplesandwine.blubrry.net/ !
Welcome to episode 21! Tonight on the closing of Thanksgiving, we're resting in our turkey comas have put away all the leftovers and are enjoying a nice hot mug of cider. What's in that cider, you may ask? Well we've got Plantation Original Dark Rum and Old Granddad's Bonded Bourbon, both worthy additions to a apple-y nightcap!
We've also got some Twitter chatter with Dave Z ✶✶✶✶ Beer In Front Podcast (@BeerInFront) and F**k My Work Life (@fmwlpod) on making beer, Malort or White Claw gummies!
The question of the day is "What are the best party games for the holidays?" What's going to keep everyone engaged and having fun? Is it an old school classic game like Pictionary or Cranium, or something new like The Chameleon? Could it be something hectic and crazy like Spaceteam or a lower key (and lower volume) game like Whoonu?
You can find all of our shows at https://meeplesandwine.blubrry.net/
Welcome to episode 20, where we try 3 Floyds Daiquiris and kittens in blenders for dessert!
Wait.
Let me rephrase. Welcome to episode 20, where we drink 3 Floyds Barnabus Lime Daiquiri (still not as good as a Hemmingway), and talk about the card game Kittens in a Blender and what are the best Thanksgiving desserts! Much better, kinda.
Tonight we discuss tabletop games that have a theme of food! Thanksgiving is just a couple days away and we've gotten our baking needs bought, well, except for heavy cream. I don't care if it's grass fed, organic, only got sun from the west, the name of the cow was "Loretta", I'm not paying $6.50 for a pint of cream. - Michael. We're sipping Chaucer's Mead (with the spice bag) hot tonight, so we'll see where that takes us, it's from Bargetto Winery by the way. But on to the games! Food themes is where we're at, and we've already talked about Sushi GO!, so that's off the table. Point Salad isn't though, and toss that in with some others like Turkey Day!
CREAMED ONIONS...yeah

Welcome to Meeples & Wine! Tonight Michael and Suzy talk about Flat Top Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2018, a light "not as citrus as they describe" wine that still was pretty good. We also talk about Phil and Kajia Foglio's Girl Genius: The Works, a game that originated from the "adults only" XXXenophile TCG from 1996. Also, a super cool badge goes to Dave C. out at Blubrry, for getting things fixed up for us to keep posting through #napodpomo!
Welcome to episode 17, where we're discussing two player survival games like Terraria, and Don't Starve Alone! We're talking about those games where you've got nothing but your wits, and maybe some sticks, to keep yourself alive! With games ranging from Minecraft to Conan Exiles, we're talking about survival! We're not sampling a wine tonight, since we finished a bottle last night and have to work tomorrow! (Lame, I know, but we got calls.)
Welcome to episode 16 of our #napodpomo run! Today we talk about MURDER and wine! We sit down with a bottle of Old Soul Petite Sirah 2017, and talk about gifts of experiences or gifts of things, Suzy brings up the book 5 Love Languages and makes Michael feel like he's in a therapy session! So that's fun! We also talk about escape and murder mystery games! From the Exit games, to Hunt A Killer to the SUPER COOL AND AMAZING AND MIKE TOTALLYWANTSTOPLAYTHEHASTURONE Mysterious Package Company set of "experiences" and a chat on the How To Host A Murder game we played it's a stabby, escapey, batch of goodness!

Welcome to episode 15 of Meeples & Wine's #napodpomo month! We're talking about a Coconut Ale today, made by...Michael's brother. Didn't have time to run out today, and we've been meaning to break that open. Also, we discuss our favorite zombie movies, ranging from Shaun of the Dead, Warm Bodies to Pontypool, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and Train to Busan. The game today is Steve Jackson Game's Zombie Dice !
Also, yes, Michael knows he got the lyrics wrong, they're "Want some whiskey in your water? Sugar in your tea?" from Three Dog Night's Mama Told Me Not To Come.

Welcome to episode 13! Today we're going to be skipping the wine tasting since Suzy has recovered from being a sicky all day and we don't want to repeat. But, we are talking about rallies and...rallies? We're talking about Road Rallies! Getting in the car, answering questions and getting to those locations first to get the clue to the next one, all to get to the Ground Round restaurant first! We've both participated and ran rallies in the past so we've got some comments! We also talk about the 1993 RoboRally and some other Richard Garfield games, then compare it to the most recent 2016 version!
Just an aside, the rally team that I was talking about in the show no longer exists, but I did find this one! https://www.ramblerrallies.com/ which looks pretty cool too!
Today Michael is running solo one more time, Suzy is feeling a bit under the weather. Though in this episode he tastes his favorite wine, Scotch! He pours a a Glencairn of Islay Storm and talks about the tabletop mini-car-battler Gaslands: Refueled. So grab some Hot Wheels and get the stats you need from the Legacy site and get fighting Mad Max style! Here's that link to the cool car mods!
Welcome to Meeples and Wine! Tonight Michael and Suzy talk about Grifone Primitivo from Trader Joe's, the card game Guillotine from Wizards of the Coast and the worst games that they have played.
What's your worst game? What's your favorite French Revolution character? What's the meaning of life? Give us a call or email and let us know! Marie Antoinette is hot right?
Hello and welcome to episode 10! Tonight our last child has turned 18, and we're discussing tabletop games that we played with them when they were littles.
