In this episode, Aisha interviews Wilson Muscadin the owner and creator of The Money Speakeasy, a Financial Coach whose clientele is predominantly black women. The guest explains the difference between a financial coach and a financial advisor, highlighting that most financial services focus on stages 11 through 15 of one's financial journey, which are typically geared towards investable assets, wealth building, and estate planning. However, most Americans are dealing with stages one through ten, which include budgeting, saving, paying off debt, and starting a family. As a financial coach, Wilson's approach is to create a no-judgment environment for clients, especially for those who may be nervous or have shame or guilt around money. He also discusses different ways that parents can start laying a strong financial foundation for their children and offers advice for people getting started on the Single mother by choice path. Wilson shares a baby checklist for those starting on the Single Mother by Choice journey, discussing financing options and other considerations.

As Single Mothers by Choice we get to make many of the decisions for our children, up to a certain point. At the point when their personalities and their individual needs emerge many of us learn that the one size fits all approach that we grew up with will not work with our children. We’ve had to adjust parenting styles and even to our support village so that we can safely and consistently parent the child in front of us.

In this episode, Aisha talks about choosing a sperm donor, whether through a known donor or a commercial sperm bank. Aisha herself used a commercial sperm bank and recommends it for those who are risk-averse. When choosing a sperm bank, important considerations include price, whether the sperm bank is LGBTQ+ or single-parent friendly, has a donor sibling registry, holiday and weekend policies, and the specific type of genetic testing required. Additionally, Aisha raises the topic of donor race, and suggests that potential parents should consider why they want a donor of a different race or ethnicity than their own. Aisha notes that black sperm donors are in short supply and encourages people to think carefully before using a donor from a different race or ethnicity. Ultimately, choosing a sperm donor is a deeply personal decision, and it is important to do one's due diligence in selecting the right donor.
Aisha continues her conversation with Denna where she goes into more detail about her experience being a blind single mother, her work at NASA, and how communities can foster a sense of belonging for people of all abilities by being intentional. Denna discusses how she found the SMC community and the benefits of being part of a Single Mother by Choice community. Additionally, while she discussing her career at NASA, she discusses her latest adventure going zero gravity with Astro Access. Denna's becoming an astronaut and I'm here for it.
Denna is a part of NASA's Astro Access team: About - AstroAccess
In this episode, Denna shares her journey of becoming a single mother through domestic private adoption. Denna had to do a lot of self-reflection and research to decide what was the right path for her. After being matched with a family who was seeking adoption for their child, Denna became their son's mother from the very beginning. Denna, who was born blind, shares how her experience of learning and adapting with her parents has helped her in her approach to motherhood. As a single mother with a disability, Denna has had to build a village on her own to raise her three-year-old son in the DC area, away from her family in Arkansas. While Denna would love for her son to have a sibling, she has decided against it because it would detract from the experiences she wants to offer her son. Instead, Denna wants to focus on giving her son a foundation to have a relationship with his birth family and siblings.
In today's episode Aisha discusses the term "Single Mother by Choice" and its evolution over time. Aisha, who is a single mother by choice, shares her own experience and journey to motherhood, including her choice to use intrauterine insemination (IUI) and invitrofertilization (IVF) to conceive her children. She highlights the importance of being informed about the different options available, knowing your fertility numbers, and encourages listeners to seek care and treatment as early as possible. Aisha also encourages other Single Mothers by Choice to find support and resources, as it was crucial for her in her journey.
