Sit, Sip, Synapse is a Podcast/Video series that focuses on tackling the gap in health literacy within our community. Listen in as we sit down with thrivers living with various medical conditions to hear from people in and around healthcare. This podcast will allow you to hear from thrivers with lived experience as patients and provide them with a platform to share their knowledge regarding their own conditions, which in turn can allow us to learn about the patient perspective. Simultaneously, we get the opportunity to sit down with community organizations and healthcare professionals working tirelessly to advocate, increase awareness and improve care in various domains of health care.

So many of us have had episodes of horrible back pain and feeling like we had no idea what to do about it. Listen and I talk to Dr. Hamilton Hall, Co-Founder of the Canadian Spine Society and Founder of the CBI Health, about back pain and what you can do before you decide to go to the hospital.

Dr. Hall provides us with tips and tricks on determining the cause of our back pain, when to go see a doctor and what other things can help alleviate the pain.

More about Dr. Hall
Dr. Hamilton Hall is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto and on the orthopedic staff at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.

In 1974, because of his interest in patient education and rehabilitation, Dr. Hall founded the Canadian Back Institute now CBI Health, the largest rehabilitation provider in Canada with over 13,000 employees.

Dr. Hall is co-founder and Executive Director of the Canadian Spine Society. He served on the editorial boards of Spine, The Spine Journal and The BackLetter.

Dr. Hamilton Hall has received Outstanding Paper and Poster awards from the North American Spine Society and the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. He is a recipient of the Best Undergraduate Clinical Lecturer Award at the University of Toronto, the NASS Henry Farfan Award for outstanding contributions to the field of spine care and Two Lifetime Achievement Awards, one from Stryker Spine and the other from the Canadian Spine Society. He has been inducted into the Toronto Orthopaedic Hall of Fame.

In addition to over 140 published articles and book chapters and over 1300 invited presentations, many as Visiting professors to universities in North America, Europe and Asia, Dr. Hamilton Hall is the author of the best-selling Back Doctor series of books for the lay public.

Rachel Desjourdy, a 30-year-old woman, lives with a rare genetic condition called Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal Dysplasia-Clefting Syndrome (EEC). She works in the field of equity, diversity, and inclusion with an emphasis on accessibility. Listen in on this episode as Rachel takes us through her journey with this condition, requiring over 20 surgeries and many hospitalizations throughout the course of her life. Episode 9 provides an insightful perspective on the work required on improving accessibility in healthcare and the little actions we can take to make the necessary changes.

Kerri Fitzsimmons is the mother of three young boys. She dedicates her time to caring for them and managing weekly hospital visits and appointments for her youngest son, Crosby, who was diagnosed with Morquio A Syndrome at just under two years old. She’s passionate about using the gratitude of “I get to,” in lieu of “I have to,” to show her boys the beauty in every situation. This positive mindset enables Kerri and Crosby to make the hospital a fun place to be each week. Kerri strives to bring awareness to Morquio A Syndrome while also helping other families deal with the diagnosis of serious conditions.

She is a second-year Ph.D. candidate in clinical psychology at Université de Montréal. She is also a globetrotter and has visited more than 12 countries around the world.
