Doing the work of the Kingdom; that is, doing the stuff that Jesus did with the same heart and character as He has (Galatians 5:22-23), He describes that lifestyle as bearing fruit. The only way a branch can bear fruit is by remaining in the vine. A detached branch loses any chance or hope of bearing fruit. The cross has visibly and permanently revealed the love of God for us. It is a love that is so powerful that it will never be removed or overcome. As Paul exclaims, it is a love so strong that we will never be separated from God. That must give us great comfort and assurance. Sin doesn’t make you bad – it makes you dead. Sin destroys you because as Paul argues, it enslaves you. We all are in danger of being enslaved by sin. It may be life destroying habits that we often think of, but may also be the small, justifiable things that take hold of our heart over the long time - like gossip or envy, pride, or laziness. No matter how hard we try or how good we may be, we cannot save ourselves. All have sinned BUT all are justified freely through the gift of Jesus’ atoning death. Jesus, God in human form, the perfect sacrifice, gave himself for every person in order that our guilt may be accounted for. The righteous for the unrighteous. Jesus became what we are in order that we could become what he is. And in doing so, Jesus has fulfilled the law for us.

There is a longing for peace in every human heart. We often look for peace in temporal places, but true peace is found in peace with God. The good news is that Jesus came to give us peace with God by faith in him. Romans 5:6 tells us that "while we were still sinners, Christ died for the ungodly". Jesus came for us when we were at our worst and now we can choose life in him. When we choose faith in Him, we go from sinner to saved.

In the midst of many unknowns, Mary chooses to write a song and magnify the Lord, but not for the first time. In a time when no one had a personal bible, Mary borrowed words from the Psalms that she had sung and memorised as a young girl. God chose Mary to a great thing because she was a bible memoriser. One of the words God has for Gateway in 2024 is MULTIPLY and the other is MAGNIFY. There are two kinds of magnifying: microscope magnifying and telescope magnifying. One makes a small thing look bigger than it is and the other makes big thing begin to look as big as it really is. When David invites us to: “O come magnify the Lord with me”, he does not mean, let us make a small God look bigger than He is, but to make a big God begin to look as big as He really is.

As we consider Jesus the baby, we are invited to encounter the God of all creation – His power, might and majesty. The Apostle John starts his account of Jesus story not in a stable in Bethlehem, but by taking us to the very beginning, where Jesus was found in the midst of creation. “Through him all things were made, without him nothing was made that has been made”. John reminds us of the power, pre-eminence and glory of the one named Jesus. Everyone, except David, was discouraged by and terrified of an arrogant and abusive giant coming against them. Their faith was shaken, and they were paralysed by fear. David however was full of faith in the Lord Almighty, which gave him the courage to face the giant, fight the giant and ultimately to defeat the giant. We all face some giants that shout at us, shake our faith and paralyse us with fear. We don’t find courage to face our giant by asking, “what am I capable of”, but rather “what is God capable of and what is He saying in this situation?”

To love and to be loved is core to our flourishing as humans. For most, this finds expression in the context of marriage – the most intimate relationship two humans can experience. Having a happy and healthy marriage is certainly part of the good life. Jesus surprises us with the revelation that the key to a great marriage is putting Him before your spouse. To live the good life, and to live it forever, He must be our first ‘plus one.’
This series called Finding the Good Life will help you in your relationships to those who you live, work and laugh with. As we know, living the good life is up to us and our investment in relationships with the people around us. If those relationships are strained or broken, it doesn’t have to stay that way; if you’re lonely, it doesn’t have to stay that way; if your family is a mess, it doesn’t have to stay that way.

I AM…….How could 2 simple words give so much hope and yet cause so much trouble. When Jesus is being questioned by religious people with a long history of belief in God, He claims that they need saving from their sin if they are to truly know God as their Father. They are indignant that they are right with God because they come from the family line of Abraham, but Jesus declares that His words have greater authority as, “before Abraham was born I AM” (John 8:58). Because of those two simple words, they picked up some rocks to stone Him. They knew that with those two simple words, that Jesus was claiming to be God Himself. (Exodus 3:14)
Jesus’ “I Am” statements have a radical inclusivity in His invitation (whoever, anyone) and a clear exclusivity in that He is the only one that can deliver what we need. This is a series with a clear call to believe in Jesus as the Son of God for salvation and an invitation to experience the life of Jesus every day.

Where the story of Ruth story begins in tragedy and death, it ends with joy and life. God’s plan for Ruth is one of redemption, hope and joy. In Ruth chapter 4, Boaz chooses to redeem Ruth and her life is changed forever. This climax to this story points to God’s redemptive story for humanity. Just as Boaz is the guardian-redeemer for Ruth, there is another Redeemer who would ultimately come in the line of Boaz and Ruth that would save the world. In the following generations that boy, Jesus would also be born in Bethlehem and redeem all of humanity.
The story of Ruth is ultimately a story about how God uses normal people to outwork His wonderful plan and works all things together for good. Through the faithful obedience and courage of people like Ruth and Boaz, we see God’s redemptive plan at work that changes all of human history.
In Ruth chapter 3, we see how Ruth shows incredible faithfulness to Naomi, trusting her wisdom and guidance in her relationship with Boaz. As a Moabite woman, it takes great courage and confidence to pursue Boaz, but her action is noted as godly kindness (hesed) – and Boaz celebrates her as a woman of noble character.

Whilst others would possibly ignore or even attack, Boaz sees and offers kindness. Boaz is the answer to the prayer that Ruth prays and ultimately, an example to us of how God is our Provider.

Although the story of Ruth begins in an act of desperation, we see through Ruth chapter 1 that Naomi returns to the land of her family and her God – believing for better days. And Ruth, her Moabite daughter-in-law profoundly chooses to be faithful, not only to her mother-in-law but also to her God.
Whatever has value to us, we make a plan for its future. Thankfully, God doesn’t leave us in the dark about how to build a great family. He outlines His plans for the family in His Word. When we follow God’s plan, we will build great families and a lasting legacy.

And what from my family needs to change so that we have a lasting legacy? What is going to make God’s name great beyond your lifetime?
