Knepp Estate is famous in the UK for showing how an intensive dairy farm can go from an empty landscape to a rich haven for wildlife & it's a location we have focused on before when we spoke with the head ecologist of Knepp, Penny Green (episode here).

Throughout history, humans, especially those of the western world, have intentionally & unintentionally introduced species around the world where they may have never reached before & as a result, negative consequences have occurred. BUT, the big questions that we often avoid is, should we actually now be intervening again to try to remove the issues that have been created. Is lethal control of mammals, fish, reptiles, insects, birds & plants really the only option? And how do we feel about this?
On this episode we explore this very topic & aim to have an honest discussion about how we feel about killing for conservation, whether or not the science tells us one way or another.

Six months ago Into The Wild attended the Whitley Fund for Nature's People for Planet Summit in London. Good lord the last 2 weeks have been eco & planet intense eh? We've had to sit back & watch/listen as world leaders have made pledges & finalised plans to help the planet reach 1.5C & get rid of fossil fuels. It's not been easy & to be honest a lot of us are unsure how we feel about the outcomes.
On Saturday 6th November, it was the Global Day of Action & thousands of people around the world marched to show support for climate & human justice. When we think of the youth fighting to save the planet, we think of the Greta's of the world. Starting & joining marches, creating petitions & talking with the decision makers, all very important stuff, but sometimes, the youth go at it a different way.

Seaspiracy, a film that needed to be made but when it was, was it done right or were there missed opportunities & misinformed messages? I certainly felt like there was but I don't work with the ocean so I thought I should get some help. My guests this week to answer my questions about this FISHY documentary were science communicator & co-founder of MISS- Elasmo, Jaida Elcock & marine biologist who is working to prevent illegal fishing, Marine Cusa.
I was keen to ask Jaida & Marine what points of the film they thought were good & what points they felt were.....not so spot on. Jaida explains to us the importance of getting the communication right & why certain messages in the film may not be the right ones to be pushing, whilst Marine rights some of the wrongs regarding talks about some NGO's in the film.
There's lots to unpack on this episode but let me remind you this show is not here to change your mind on Seaspiracy. This episode is here to add to the research you are hopefully doing on the topic of sustainable fishing & marine conservation.

Seriously though, I decided to put this episode first because it's what I believe this new year is in need of. Discussion & listening. Even when it's topics that make us uncomfortable. That's certainly what Into The Wild believes in. So that's what Gabi & I did. They told me all about their career working in field trying to solve predator & community conflict & the reasons why poaching even exists.
I also asked Gabi what their thoughts or feelings are when they read or hear of people suggesting, poachers should be killed.
Gabi says it clearly. Don't devalue human life. Accept that humans are part of a holistic ecosystem & the best way to help wildlife, if Gabi could change one thing? End poverty.

It still shocks people to learn that here in England, we have snakes, but we do & one person who loves this fact is PhD student who specialises in snakes & amphibians, Steve Allain.
The topic of snakes is a big one so we kept this more specific to UK species however of course I asked some of the general questions like, "are they all venomous?" & "how the heck do they move?" but on from that, Steve told us all about the different species we can find here in this temperate island & how the vary.

It's been said many times that rewilding land & reintroductions of species is key to saving biodiversity & assisting with the battle of climate change. One man that knows not only the info but the challenges of the work itself is ecologist, reintroduction specialist, farmer & author of Bringing Back The Beaver, Derek Gow.

Beavers. In England, they've come, then gone, then come & gone & now they are coming back again & we want them to stay.
For years many organisations have worked hard to get beavers back in the English ecosystems & with recent news of the UK government giving the right to remain to some family groups of beavers on the river otter in Devon, this work has had so much rightful attention in the media.

This week's show is very exciting & important for so many reasons. So let's explain. This is a first for Into The Wild. This is our first ever panel show recorded with 3 guests over zoom. Not only a first for us though, it's a first for the UK & likely, many other western countries. As we are discussing the topic of trophy hunting...."But that's been done Ryan?" Yeah, I know, but to my knowledge, never has this chat taken place while purely chatting to the people it directly affects. 3 local, key wildlife & community workers of Namibia. These people are, Maxi Louis, who has over 22 years of experience working with communities in conservation. John Mwilima, a member & advisor of the Banumu conservancy. And finally, Lorna Dax manager of the Khaodi & Haos conservancy.
You may already have your opinions & views on trophy hunting, I did before I started the chat, however, I ask you to leave them here. This show is about talking to local people, whose lives & livelihoods depend on trophy hunting (or, since this interview, I now call, conservation hunting.) Maxi, Lorna & John don't just look at records or stats & bits of paper, they see the impacts of conservation hunting. From the benefit to the people & local communities, the animals & their survival & the habitat & environment.
It's easy for us in England, or America, or France, or Australia etc to criticise a method such as conservation hunting, however, we do not live in this country. We should be listening to the people that live in these areas & learn more about methods like this. As highlighted in this show, African people have harvested animals for hundreds of years, this isn't new. Also as pointed out, it is heavily regulated.
But, I don't want to give anything away. I also don't want you to think you have to leave here being pro conservation hunting. You don't. That's up to you. All you have to do is listen to these 3 voices that are too often, ignored when talking about this topic. For me, I've learnt so much more & understand it far greater. Could I hunt? No way. Do I understand why Americans or Britain's pay all this money to hunt? Not really. Do I think it's wrong, damaging & needs to stop? Not anymore.

I've always had big respect for wildlife filmmakers. Not only is it a job that requires a huge level or patience, but it's the job that results in bringing nature & sights from the natural world into the homes of millions of people. Scenes that are the reason why I & many of you, love nature today.
And because of this, I was very excited about today's show with marine biologist & marine wildlife filmmaker & photographer, Inka Cresswell.
