Technology is part of our lives from a very early age and dealing with the choices is hard for adults, let alone kids barely out of nappies, but it is their reality. This terrific new book is just what the doctor ordered and delivered - Dr. Niraj Lal, that is. Behind the Screens is a guide to navigating the internet for 9 to 13 year olds, but it is so much more than that. Like lots of things in life, kids should not be the only ones allowed to access this invaluable tool. Dr. Niraj aka 'Nij' has given us a well laid out game plan to ensure we are controlling our phone and internet use, not the other way around.

Behind the Screens - published by University of Queensland Press - is exactly what it says it is, a book that shows you how the internet works and how to make it work for you.

For many, it was the absolute must-see television show every Sunday night across Australia. The show that shaped the musical tastes of a generation and made superstars out of many of its discoveries. That show was Countdown, and authors Brett Leslie and Milton Hammon have painstakingly detailed the history of the show in a very large way with their book Countdown - The Complete Episode Guide.

It's over 400 pages, reliving the music and stars of one of the most influential shows of all time. Brett Leslie talks about the challenges they encountered in compiling the book, including the fact the ABC recorded over or wiped much of the early recording of the show.

It is an incredible chronicle of a modern day icon and copies have sold fast.

Scott Leckie has written many books but none like Shrewd Little Sleuth and that is not surprising. Scott is a human rights lawyer and has penned dozens of books in the course of that vocation, but this latest book is personal. It is about his grandfather - Arthur Bernard Leckie. Arthur was an FBI Agent back in the days when J Edgar Hoover was running the organisation and history tells us that was a time of mystery, skullduggery and intrigue and Scott's grandfather was up to his ears in it. From Marilyn Monroe to Fidel Castro, the stories Scott has uncovered and shared in this book will blow your mind.

Books allow us to engage in eras and events that our mortal beings cannot and in this episode of Authorised, two very talented authors take us back in time to a very different Australia to the one we currently live in.

Flight by Anne Vines (Glass House Books) brings 1942 Melbourne alive with the threat of a Japanese invasion in the air and platoons of American servicemen on the ground. What started as a short story has blossomed into a tale that reflects the fabric of a city and its people in a time of uncertainty, a love story that has its own enemies and challenges and a society fractured by forces not of the military kind.

A L Booth takes us even further back with her book Death at Booroomba (Ventura Press). Just days before leaving to fight for his country on the battlefields of World War 1, Jack O'Rourke dives into Sydney Harbour to save a drowning man. It is the beginning of a saga that takes the reader on a historical roller coaster ride of emotions. Though set in a small Australian country town, this is a big story in so many ways.

Give Dad a book this Father's Day, and I have three nominations for you to consider from the two authors who join me in this episode. Sports fans have something special whenever author Glen Humphries releases a new title and in this case it is double the pleasure. Author Joan Sauers delivers her second novel Whisky Valley (Allen & Unwin), a delicious cocktail of mystery, romance and pastries set in the brooding Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

Nathan Dunne's When Nothing Feels Real (Murdoch Books) brings a mystery of a different kind, detailing his personal journey as someone living with depersonalisation. Nathan goes beyond sharing his own experiences, adding other stories from other sufferers and interviewing doctors to shed a light on this little known and little talked about mental condition.

Jenny Pattrick came to writing novels after a very successful life in teaching and in the jewellery industry where she is something of a revered figure. The New Zealand born and raised author chats about her 11th novel, Sea Change. Jenny takes us to a coastal community reeling from a tsunami and the aftermath brings out the best and worst in those affected.

My second guest is author A.M.Jaxon, talking about the first part of The Love Connection Series. Saoirse's Story takes you from Donegal in Ireland to Brisbane as the main character seeks a new life, but it is anything but plain sailing.

Two very different writers, two very different books, but equally engaging and entertaining.

It's another double-barrelled episode of Authorised, with two authors who come to our bookshelves via very different paths.

Muriel Cooper was the queen of talkback radio for many years and a trailblazer in broadcasting for the women who have followed her. These days she is a psychologist and author and her latest book is the most refreshing self help guide you will find anywhere. The title says it all - Up Shit Creek in a Barbed Wire Canoe and How to Cope with it (Norstrilia Press). As flippant as that sounds, Muriel has some very useful hints, presented in her own unique style.

Joanna Jenkins became a fulltime writer after a long and distinguished law career. The law's loss is our gain, as Joanna's second novel shows her to be a very clever, unpredictable and adventurous author with well-honed storytelling skills. The Bluff (Allen & Unwin) is a compelling story, as is how it came to be.

Peter Norris has led an extraordinary life by any measure. His childhood was unlike anyone else's and like us all, he made some good and bad choices, but the options he had to choose from were very different to most kids. Peter's father was a career criminal and it looked like Peter was following in his footsteps until he made a difficult choice.

Peter's story is harrowing, confronting, sad, joyous and totally compelling. The Bank Robber's Boy (Big Sky Publishing) does have a happy ending and Peter shares the whole experience in this candid chat with Kevin.

It's not exactly chalk and cheese, but it's not far from it, with the combination of authors in this episode. Victoria Brownlee's third novel 'Eat Your Heart Out' (Affirm Press) is a food fight with a difference as rival food writers vie for the much sought-after biographer's byline for a high-profile, high maintenance French celebrity chef. Is it a dream job or a nightmare? That's a great story, as is Victoria's, which she shares with Kevin.

Angelika von Sanden is a trauma counsellor and through her work and life has observed first hand the healing powers of our beloved canine companions. More by chance than design, she compiled the initial chapters that have become this incredibly helpful book 'Sit. Stay. Grow' (Hardie Grant Australia). It is the only self-help book you will find that has no humans, which is unique and remarkable.

It's variety with a capital V in this episode of Authorised. Maryrose Cuskelly's latest book The Campers is more a How Dare They? than a Whodunnit, making it an even more intriguing read and featuring a subject matter sure to evoke much discussion.

On the other hand, John Wayne Parr has bled in the pursuit of his life goal. He carries the scars from 110 wins in the ring all over the world and proudly boasts 10 world titles.

The Campers (Allen & Unwin) and The Fighter (Hachette) come from two vastly different parts of the literary world but provide unique experiences for the reader, as detailed by Maryrose and John in their chat with Kevin.

In this episode, meet two unique and talented authors discussing two vastly different pieces of work. Mark Smith's Three Boys Gone and Everald Compton's Walking with the Man but not to Church come from very different places. Mark's ficticious novel is action packed and packed with thought provoking human, moral and ethical dilemmas. Everald's book is all that as well, but it is also the thoughts, reflections and questions of a man who has lived a full, rewarding, busy and inquisitive life. Another double banger December episode with two authors discussing their latest work. Steve Woods' third volume of his For the Record books 'As the Days Go By' is a day by day chronicle of events in music, television, movies and more from an Aussie point of view. A huge undertaking and one Steve has conquered brilliantly. He shares some great stories with Kevin in the opening chat for this episode.

Des Tobin's 86 years on the planet have revolved around his family and his family business, so it is no surprise he was drawn to the amazing stories of families involved in Australian Rules Football and the tales he has uncovered make for great reading, even if you have no football interest at all. From the Whittens, Abletts and Kennedys to Captain Blood and the Tiwi magicians, 'It's in the Genes' is packed with colourful characters and incredible stories.

Double banger December gets underway with two fabulous but very different books. Karin Keays' 'It's Because I Love You' is a real life rock 'n roll romance but it is also the story of a mother's quest to find the truth behind the death of her baby boy. Karin and her late husband Jim Keays, the lead singer of the Masters Apprentices, were living a wonderful life when tragedy struck and it was not the last Karin would endure. Her story is compelling, sad, inspiring and very real and raw.

And now for something completely different: The Dictionary of Terrible Ideas (ABC Books) is the latest offering from Dominic Knight. Well known as one of the founders of The Chaser ensemble, Dominic brings a smorgasbord of hilarious, horrific and helpful ideas and observations, all alphabetised for your comic convenience.
