TRIGGER WARNING - SEXUAL ASSAULT CASES DISCUSSED

There are over 10 cases a week of sexual assault on university campuses. That's more than one everyday. Yet, almost nothing is being done about it. This is why Laila Ahmed, a first year student at the University of Warwick, took it in her hands to take action. Her petition has received over 60,000 signatures and her protest made a massive impact.

Universities are known for doing little to help their students who have been victim of sexual assault, on top of the rigorous investigations that the police conduct, that is, if the case gets reported at all. In this podcast, Laila and I discuss what achievable things universities can do to change this.

You can learn more about Laila's work here: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CIMHJAFH-dk/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Please sign Laila's petition here: https://www.change.org/p/university-of-warwick-warwick-uni-to-take-action-against-sexual-assault-cases?utm_content=cl_sharecopy_26034831_en-GB%3A5&recruited_by_id=6e4e3540-2fd9-11eb-992c-938c5abb374c&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&utm_term=petition_dashboard&fbclid=IwAR1pNyR5NyfbZxQFilbYDe0fi8d-MdVFotP0oA58GgKVPMJld4_WBkFGBCY

Helplines:

If you have been victim of sexual assault, please visit A&E or a Sexual Health Clinic who can help with physical trauma or contact any of these helplines who can provide mental trauma support. We understand how hard it is to speak up about something like this - stay strong.

Three out of four people who were bullied said that their mental health has been affected, and nearly half became depressed as a result. 33% of bullied students said that they had suicidal thoughts, while 41% were left feeling anxious.

Bullying is still a taboo subject that should be openly spoken about. It's important to talk to trusted people such as parents or teachers when you are being bullied to shield you from any harm. Schools are still not doing enough to help students struggling with bullying. It's important to speak loudly of how schools should go about raising awareness and helping students who are being bullied.
