Art of Discussing podcast is dedicated to providing an outlet for people to learn about other people’s viewpoints and share their own viewpoints. It is a platform that people can discuss topics with people of a different opinion to their own to learn and understand each other as humans.

John Mueller is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute. He is also a member of the political science department and senior research scientist with the Mershon Center for International Security Studies at the Ohio State University.

A leading expert on terrorism and particularly on the reactions (or over‐reactions) it often inspires, he is the coauthor (with Mark G. Stewart) of Chasing Ghosts: The Policing of Terrorism, published by Oxford University Press in 2016. Their Terror, Security and Money: Balancing the Risks, Benefits, and Costs of Homeland Security was published in 2011 by Oxford. Other books from Mueller include Overblown: How Politicians and the Terrorism Industry Inflate National Security Threats and Why We Believe Them (Free Press, 2006) and Atomic Obsession: Nuclear Alarmism from Hiroshima to Al‐Qaeda (Oxford, 2010). Popkin has published in unusually diverse areas across subfields. His influential books focused on campaigns, voting, and elections include: The Candidate: What it Takes to Win (and Hold) the White House, The Reasoning Voter: Communication and Persuasion in Presidential Campaigns, Issues and Strategies: The Computer Simulation of Presidential Campaigns, and Chief of Staff: Twenty-Five Years of Managing the Presidency, and, most recently, Crackup: The Republican Implosion and the Future of Presidential Politics (Oxford University Press, 2021). He is equally well known for his work on peasant society, with particular reference to East and Southeast Asia, including The Rational Peasant: The Political Economy of Rural Society in Vietnam. Popkin has also been a consulting analyst in presidential campaigns, serving as consultant to the Clinton campaign on polling and strategy, to the CBS News election units from 1983 to 1990 on survey design and analysis, and more recently to the Gore campaign. He has also served a consultant to political parties in Canada and Europe and to the Departments of State and Defense.

Dustin started Justice Java: Cold Brew with a Cause to overcome the employment discrimination he faced after his release from prison in 2015. His full-service mobile coffee trailer employ has employed formerly incarcerated, survivors, victims’ rights advocates, and others directly impacted by the trauma surrounding the justice system. He is a graduate of Just Leadership’s Breakthrough Action Leadership training, and Landmark Education’s Curriculum for Living. He serves on the Planning Committee for the ACLU’s Smart Justice Campaign. When he isn’t serving the #bestdamncoldbrewinphx he advocates for sensible criminal justice reforms by meeting with legislators and speaking publicly about data-driven solutions to the problem of mass incarceration.

Dr. Lawrence Basso Bio:
Lawrence V. Basso MD is a native of San Francisco. Following graduation from Medical School at UCSF, he trained at the University of Washington in Seattle in Internal Medicine and thereafter he returned to San Francisco for a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism. After two years in the US Army he returned to accept a position in Endocrinology at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Palo Alto. He also was able to work part time at Stanford University with responsibility for organizing and teaching Medical Residents. It was there that he developed a love of teaching. At the same time, he became certified in the specialty of Nuclear Medicine and later in his career was also an attending physician in Nuclear Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He also was the chief of Nuclear Medicine at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. In the last 15 years he has taught at Stanford, Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, UC Extension in Belmont in Human Physiology, Human Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Developmental Biology. He has published over 30 papers and is a co-author on a Textbook on Immunoassay. In recent years he extended his teaching to the lay public. He enjoys taking very complex topics like Genetics or Immunology and making them understandable to the non-medical public.

Dr. Lawrence Basso Bio:
Lawrence V. Basso MD is a native of San Francisco. Following graduation from Medical School at UCSF, he trained at the University of Washington in Seattle in Internal Medicine and thereafter he returned to San Francisco for a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism. After two years in the US Army he returned to accept a position in Endocrinology at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Palo Alto. He also was able to work part time at Stanford University with responsibility for organizing and teaching Medical Residents. It was there that he developed a love of teaching. At the same time, he became certified in the specialty of Nuclear Medicine and later in his career was also an attending physician in Nuclear Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He also was the chief of Nuclear Medicine at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. In the last 15 years he has taught at Stanford, Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, UC Extension in Belmont in Human Physiology, Human Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Developmental Biology. He has published over 30 papers and is a co-author on a Textbook on Immunoassay. In recent years he extended his teaching to the lay public. He enjoys taking very complex topics like Genetics or Immunology and making them understandable to the non-medical public.
