Nicole Gebhardt: Turning Trauma into Purpose Through Sobriety, Support, and CommunityTrigger Warning: Episode will cover topics of loss, rape, addition and suicide. On A Ruck Up Buttercup Podcast, host Ashley interviews Nicole Gebhardt—2026 National Guard Military Spouse of the Year, best-selling author, mother, and recovering addict—who shares her “pain to purpose” journey and the importance of community for military spouses. Nicole recounts childhood sexual abuse by her father, a gang rape in college, miscarriages, and the death of her son Samuel at nine weeks old, followed by being treated as a criminal and enduring an abusive, drug-addicted first marriage before fleeing with her children while pregnant. After remarrying a service member, unhealed trauma led to heavy drinking and a 2019 suicide attempt that she survived, prompting sobriety and intensive healing. Spouse Chat: Veterans on Becoming Military Spouses, Deployments, and the Comparison TrapIn this “Ruck Up Buttercup” spouse chat, Ashley hosts Lara and Grant, both veterans now military spouses, to discuss the shock of switching from service member to spouse, especially the loss of control during deployments, constant changes and extensions, and the value of understanding military language and realities. They compare deployment life for service members versus spouses managing home responsibilities, careers, finances, and reintegration challenges, noting that reunions can feel unexpectedly awkward and require relearning routines. The conversation covers career disruption, PCS barriers, stereotypes and drama in spouse Facebook groups, and how social media fuels negativity and comparison. Key guidance includes planning with flexibility, not overplanning, communicating needs during separation and reintegration, seeking supportive community and resources, avoiding assumptions, and not measuring one’s experience against others because every military journey is different.00:00 Meet The Spouse Chat02:28 From Service To Spouse05:08 Deployment Extensions Reality09:33 Losing Control At Home14:13 PCS Careers And Money16:41 Grant Love Story20:58 Reintegration And Resentment27:50 Spouse Groups Culture Shock34:27 Prior Service Pros And Cons38:40 Stereotypes And Spouse Views41:26 Purpose Beyond Background43:31 Every Sailor Has A Story46:58 Spouse Groups With Empathy49:42 Stereotypes And Reality Check53:43 Finding The Right Community56:49 Creating Content To Help01:01:15 Parting Advice On Flexibility01:05:55 Reintegration And No Comparison01:14:39 Resources Plugs And FarewellFind us or reach out here:Linktree: https://linktr.ee/DeployedLove Website: www.deployedlove.org/podcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/ruckupbuttercupInstagram: www.instagram.com/ruckupbuttercuppodcast Email: ashleybrown@deployedlove.org

In this episode we are talking about a subject that is really hard to approach. We know that our military members need to have good mental health in order to most effectively complete the mission. However, the military also comes with many different types of trauma. From basic training to deployments each person experiences things that will affect how they portrait the world going forward. Unfortunately for a lot of military members they are going to suffer from PTSD, Anxiety, or Depression. We are hopeful that mental health will continue to become a more talked about topic as you will hear from our guest Lara Brown-Akerstrom today that sadly it’s not always approached as it should. We all know the all to daunting statistic of 20 veterans per day die by suicide as a result of lack of treatment or failed treatment for mental disorders. (Mental Health First Aid) We hope by speaking on the issue, it will bring more awareness and hopefully reach the concerned ears of the right person. As military spouses this isn’t a statistic to us, this is our spouses, and our friends they are talking about. Suffering in silence and waging a war inside their heads that we can’t see. Reach out to your military family, keep in contact, know the signs and suggest resources. Because although you may feel annoying and persistent, there is something to be said for simply having people acknowledge your struggle.Resources:Mental Health First Aid: https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/veterans-military/ Cohen Clinic: https://centerstone.org/cohen-military-family-clinic/ Military One Source: https://www.militaryonesource.mil/ Brandon Act: https://thebrandonact.org/ Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: https://988lifeline.org/ Wreaths Across America: https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/ Fischer House: https://fisherhouse.org/ Gold Star Families: https://www.militaryonesource.mil/casualty-assistance/survivor-support/honoring-gold-star-families/ Contact us:Email: Sabrinajohannes@deployedlove.orgFacebook: www.facebook.com/ruckupbuttercupInstagram: www.instagram.com/ruckupbuttercuppodcast

On this episode we were joined by Hannah, she was so amazing to come on to our show and bring awareness to some minorities in the military community. Her family has experienced this first hand. As Jewish Members of the military community there are often hurdles and struggles that the average military member may not encounter. Hannah brought to light some of those challenges and how her and her spouse are doing great things to simply bring awareness to the issues. They simply want to see people who are part of the minorities in the military having their physical needs (including food) being met, but also that there is enough of a level of respect to simply ensure their family will grow up in a space they can feel safe.We are more than most communities a Melting Pot of Traditions. We need to be much more aware of how we can be inclusive, and learn amazing things from one another. For those of you looking to learn more Hannah has provided an amazing resource her family uses, as well as we have included her TikTok link so you can see the amazing videos her family creates Resources Mentioned:PJ Library: https://pjlibrary.org/communities/jwb-jewish-chaplains-council/51194 Aleph Institute: https://alephmilitary.org Kosher Troops: https://koshertroops.comJWB Jewish Chaplains Council: https://jcca.org/what-we-do/jwb/ Hannah’s Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thejewishmilspouse Find Ruck Up Buttercup Here:www.instagram.com/ruckupbuttercuppodcast www.facebook.com/ruckupbuttercup www.deployedlove.org/podcast Reach out to us:sabrinajohannes@deployedlove.org

On this week's episode we are joined with guest Gracie Burgess of Grace of a Military Child. She is the host of an amazing podcast that supports military families but telling the stories of military kids across the world. Her stories and program help to connect military kids with like minded people as well as allow them to hear other stories. This brings this beautiful sense of community to them. Not all military families are stationed at installations. Especially guards, and reserve units, however they still are activated and deployed. Those families feel disconnected and disadvantaged when very real life events happen.Gracie so lovely tells her experience of the time her father was injured while deployed. Her heartbreaking story of how this affected her life being a military kid is one you should hear. We all hope that we will never have to be the one receiving a call like this, but unfortunately it happens. Ashley and Gracie chat about amazing resources to know about, it is better to be prepared than be grasping for strings if that time does come.Resources Mentioned:Military Advocacy Programs through schools: We don’t have a specific link for this as it will depend on your location. But this is amazing if your school has this function your kids will really enjoy connecting with other military kids in their community.Fisher House: https://fisherhouse.org/ Reach out to Gracie:Grace of a Military Child and Life Email: gburg20@gmail.comReach out to us:www.deployedlove.org/podcastwww.facebook.com/ruckupbuttercupwww.instagram.com/ruckupbuttercuppodcastEmail: SabrinaJohannes@deployedlove.org

We have been wanting to do an episode to include our dual military spouses for so many years, and it has been so hard to find a guest for this episode. We know just how busy those spouses are. This episode we were really lucky to have a dear friend of Sabrina’s on the show. Lynnette Plevris has lived the dual military life, and ultimately chose to give up her military career to benefit her family all around. She has shared her experiences from both perspectives, and the challenges she has encountered. This is an amazing listen to give you some perspective into what it is like for your military member as well as any friends you know who are both active duty. This week we are talking about Travel with Amber Korban from Amber Korban Travel Co. She has some great tips on how to plan your dream trip, or even a road trip home.

We are here to encourage you to go see things, get out and explore your duty stations. As military spouses we tend to get stuck in the routine of spending our leave going back to see family where we grew up. This is great but if you feel like you are doing this simply because you feel guilty from moving away, you don’t have to always do that.

Save your leave time for family vacations, and encourage your family to meet you on trips that will be enjoyable to everyone.

Amber also tells about all the amazing places that you can go that offer Military Discount to help you keep your trips even more affordable.

She is always available to help you book your next trip, if you have more questions you can reach her at amberkorban@gmail.com

Season 3 Episode 6 Military Kids Grow up So FastWelcome to Episode 6 of this year's podcast!! We are so glad to have you here and to see that you are part of our community. This month as April being the month of the Military Child we wanted to end the month with a special episode paying tribute to the amazing people who make up the kids of the military community. We had a special guest of Chandelle Walker today and we enjoyed such a lively conversation about what it is to be a military child, how that changes from being a baby to growing up and becoming an adult who has been a brat the entire time of their youth.“As a mother you stand and look strong, because you are proud of your husband. But you also take on this huge responsibility and role for your children” -Chandelle Walker. It's really important to realize that kids are “resilient and strong” but they have very valid concerns, and emotions and that there is so much importance in validating them and accepting them where they are. Not alway just telling them they are so strong. Especially when they grow into young adults being able to discuss as a family those feelings will only help to strengthen your connection. Like they say “Compassion Creates Understanding”.“Sometimes even as little kids they can recognize your feelings, and help to bring back the joy” -Chandelle Walker. We know oftentimes the resources are scrambled across the internet. It exists but is not always easy to find when you need it. Here is a few that we mentioned. Season 3 Episode 5:We are talking all about the stereotypes and controversial subjects of being part of the military community. Covering “dependas”, Family Groups, and online bullying. This raw uncut episode really shows that there are so many things that will affect your life as a military spouse. Not everything is going to be smooth sailing. You are going to hit bumps. Not every group in the military is going to be a fit for you and that is okay. We want you to realize that we have all encountered different experiences and they will vary WILDLY from duty station to duty station, and even from unit to unit. When you put a huge amount of people from cultures all over the world you are bound to find drama, and differences. But this is what makes the military community such a beautiful one to be involved with.We really hope that if you try a family group with one tour and it doesn't work to not shun the next one as they are all run differently. Volunteers run them and they are going to look different depending on the dedication and time of said volunteers. And do remember that there are some other really amazing options out there at some bases from: Deployed Love, MOPS, USO, ACS…find where you fit, and find your tribe. Season 3 Episode 2 Military GirlfriendsOften the most overlooked demographic when thinking about the military community. Viewed as a temporary part of the community and not given the support they deserve, the Military Girlfriend/Boyfriend is a hard place to find yourself. We have on with us this week Kaitlyn Berger, a long term Airforce Girlfriend who lives with her Airmen, and they have been together for years. She discusses how receiving support from the unit, as well as the other people within the community is often difficult. Despite living very near the same life as a military spouse without the title, things are often harder. Having chosen thus far to explore their relationship and not rush into the “stereotypical” young military marriage life, they are all too often looked down on.We discuss why there is that stereotype as far as marrying young and fast, and how we can better serve relationships that are choosing to take things at their own pace. “It’s hard to support someone in the military knowing you aren’t recognized by the military….I want to be here for my person but I am not recognized as someone important in their life”-Kaitlyn BergerWe also are happy to see that things have grown and changed much since Sabrina and Ashley were the girlfriend, but there are still ways to go to be more inclusive and understanding.Find us:www.instagram.com/Ruckupbuttercuppodcastwww.facebook.com/RuckUpButtercup www.DeployedLove.org/podcast

On today's Girl Chat, Sabrina Johannes, Ashley Brown and Kim Clagg talk about the current challenges that their lives are undergoing. Military associated life throws so many curve balls and learning to still hit home runs can be so hard sometimes.

It is okay to not be okay, it is okay to ask for help, or to step back and give yourself time and space. It is very important to listen to your body and your heart and know when you need to focus on you. The adage of you can't fill from an empty cup works so well with military spouse life. We run everything from behind the scenes and if we cant take time for ourselves we will not be able to continue to give to others.

Season 2 Episode 11: EFMP

On today’s episode of Ruck up Buttercup we are chatting about EFMP. A topic that has come up a lot this year as we talk about PCS but also will continue to come up as the new school year begins with IEP’s. EFMP the Exceptional Family Member Program is set up by the military to provide additional services to families with members that need to be provided additional services and medical appointments due to a specific condition that their primary provider can’t accommodate. This ranges from seasonal bronchitis, heart conditions, migraines, to more challenging diagnosis like speech apraxia, ADHD, and autism. There is a wide range in which they cover and families are required to enroll in EFMP. The program is meant to protect families with medical needs during moves in order to make sure that you are only sent to places where you will receive proper services.

Our amazing guests Kirtley Adams and Jesica Ogden are both heavily involved in the EFMP world. Kirtley currently volunteer with EFMP at Fort Benning and is a wealth of knowledge she also has a 7 year old son who is enrolled. Jesica is a licensed advocate and deals on a daily basis with her 3 children being enrolled and receiving services. Their experience has come with SO MUCH LEARNING. They share so many valuable facts and tidbits that we didn’t even know existed. All of the resources they mentioned are included below, but as always we want to really encourage you to do your research. Yes we talk about these as challenges, but they are all things you can get through. And they are SO WORTH IT in the long run. You are going to learn, grow and experience so many things through this opportunity. Your kids or yourself may be dealing with things that require a little more attention but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy the same experiences and it is wonderful to see that there are programs like these available to help.

If you know any resources for these challenges that will be helpful to the listeners PLEASE send them our way so we can better help families.

Season 2 Episode 10: OCONUS PCS

On today’s episode of Ruck up Buttercup we are chatting about Changing Tides, our summer informational series being discussed on Deployed Love on Facebook. Listen to meet Alyssa as she gives us some amazing tips on how being conscious of our surroundings, mostly our environments when we move from one location to another can help to build a more resilient family unit!

We have said more times than I can even remember in the past that a strong and resilient family equals a strong and resilient military force! Knowing your surroundings and what risks you may encounter by the region you live in, whether that is hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes or tornados, you can prepare best and know that you are going to feel secure and safe. We all move and change locations quite often so remembering to research your new location, talk about emergency plans, and how to be more self reliant is always a great idea

We want to help you do that research so we have included some great links below, also make sure that you join us on Deployed Love on Facebook as Alyssa will have even more really great information as the summer continues!!

On today’s episode of Ruck up Buttercup we are with a few lovely ladies who are realtors and lenders from both the east coast, and the west coast. We have Beth Lee, Sarah Crandall, and Ayren Pfeifer on to help answer questions about how the housing market is affecting the military family, as well as how to best navigate purchasing or renting a home in this market.

Step by step through the process for all military home buyers:

1: Shop around for lenders, you should interview at least 3 lenders.

2.Shop around for an agent, you should also interview at least 3 agents. This allows you and the agents a chance to know what you are looking for, how to communicate, and to prepared for what is to come in the house buying process.

  1. Make sure you and anyone you are purchasing the house with are on the same page when it comes to your wants and needs. So you are able to go into the house search with expectations.

  2. Have money available for unexpected expenses. This may look like offering over asking, closing costs, home inspections, earnest money, or due diligence.

If buying a house isn’t in the books for your family we understand and have a couple tips when it comes to getting a rental in a market where they are hard to find. Look for a property manager (they know about things before they even hit the main market), use Zillow (homeowners can now directly rent via Zillow and some of these houses may never reach the MLS, be creative and reach out to owners directly on social media.

Luckily from the sounds of it the housing marketing is beginning to settle. If you have any questions any of these 3 ladies would be more than happy to help you how they can!

Beth Lee: has been a mortgage loan officer the past 8 years, specializing in VA loans. She was born and raised in east TN and has 4 amazing daughters age 19 to 4. On today’s episode of Ruck up Buttercup we are with a military spouse and mom of almost 3 Athens Pellegrino. Athens is a seasoned spouse who has encountered her share of military challenges. During her last pcs it was mid pandemic and the struggles of moving to a new community felt extra hard to take on. She was struggling with how to explain the feelings of PCS to her oldest who was old enough to finally have a little grip on what was going on. She decided to create a story book that would allow him to understand the concept of moving duty stations from a child’s perspective. We discuss in this episode some of the challenges that military kids encounter as they are part of the family who serves. From PCS, to distant relatives we cover the less discussed situations and give some suggestions that have worked for us and our joint 6 kids.

Athens also discusses her 2 previous books in The Military Child Chronicles. Where she has now written and plans to continue to write kids books that touch on the hard times military kids encounter. She hopes that her books will touch their little hearts and let them know that they aren’t going through these times alone.

Season 2 Episode 4: Sherry Motcheck

On today’s episode of Ruck up Buttercup we are taking on a new perspective of chatting with a military momma!! Sherry Motcheck is a mom to a soldier in the Army and a sailor in the Navy. She was brough into the military family pretty suddenly and with no warning. Her boys joined in college and she was thrown into being a military mom with no former military experience. Sherry talks with us about the feelings involved in having your child join the military, and the lack of resources for military parents as far as feeling involved, and knowing what to expect.

We also chat about what a relationship with a soldier can look like from a mom’s perspective and then how that changes when the military member gets married or has kids. This unique perspective allows you to learn how to not only best love your spouse but also how to learn to love you in laws. They love their kid, and you love their kid so how to best make that work.

We are really hoping from this episode you are able to look at the military life, and the military family from a new perspective and reach out to those more distant relationships and helping them to feel involved and supported as well.

Season 2 Episode 3 Dr Kendra Lowe

On this episode we sat down and chatted with Dr Kendra Lowe who has over 21 years of experience and wears multiple hats within the military community. Veteran, Psychologist, CEO, Author and of course Military Spouse. She recently published a second book called: MilSpouse Strength.

Her message touches on so many things that military spouses feel during their time serving with their spouse. It was nice to hear her side of things and I know many veterans who transition into being a military spouse after leaving the service feel the same way as she did. If you feel lost or like you lost a part of yourself, “your struggles are just as valid, all of our struggles are valid”

We discussed that how you approach stress and challenges and of course how you chose to overcome them is up to you. There are so many things you can add to your toolbox in order to feel like you are prepared for whatever it is that Military Life might choose to throw at you. In her newest book she goes into those things in more detail but some suggestions she had were:

  1. Journaling
  2. Exercising
  3. A Visual Reminder
  4. A mantra or family mantra
  5. Goal setting
  6. Breathing
  7. Listing out your wins or gratitude Finding a self-awareness of how you take on the challenges, and realizing what works and doesn’t work for you to overcome those things is very important. “You have a choice everyday to embrace your situation or to be miserable” and we all hope you will take the journey to shift your mindset to a more positive one and overcome it!

We are so excited that Dr Kendra has chosen to donate one of her books to our show in order to give away to one you amazing listeners!! Check out our Instagram this week for more details on how you can win it (there will be a giveaway post).

Girl chat with hosts Sabrina Johannes, Ashley Brown and Kim Clagg.

Join us as we discuss some of the less talked about sides of being a military spouse.

We asked our listeners what the biggest challenges they see as a military spouse with their significant other were in regards to their relationship. We took their answers and discussed them, and how we too also relate to all the things they are going through.

Military Spouses go through so many challenges that not everyone can relate to. Those challenges can cause resentment, frustration, and honestly just feeling like you have no worth as a spouse as you continue to give up your identity time and time again.

We discuss how communication, finding your tribe and fostering friendships, as well as making hard choices to choose you or the kids first can be hard, but also maybe the best ways to solve the problems that come up in relationships.

We highly encourage you to find your means of communication, or therapy, or marriage retreats and do the relationship maintenance now instead of having to find someone that can patch it back together once it is broken. Even with all three of us having been in long marriages, we don't know the exact tools, and tricks to have a perfect relationship, so getting outside help is essential!

This weeks episode is one that we will hold dear to our hearts for a long long time!!!

We were joined by Scott DeLuzio from the Drive On Podcast. He is a host of an amazing show that provides support and resources to Veterans across the country. Scott as a Gold Star Brother has a very heartbreaking and unique story about losing his brother during the war in Afghanistan while also on a deployment with his own national guard unit at the time.

He drew in from his experience and perspective to not only survive this, but also to advocate for the Gold Star Community and bring his brother's story to life.

We hope that you will find yourself inspired and motivated to bring change and help to the Veteran Community this Veteran's Day.

On Episode 19 of Ruck Up Buttercup, Sabrina Johannes, Ashley Brown, and Amanda Hughes chat about Finances.

Amanda tells us her story as she ventured into the military life on chance. And we all discussed the very little mentioned subject of finances. It's avoided, sometimes joked about, and very often misunderstood by those not in the military. But the struggle is real as we all discuss the times when being part of the military family was very difficult on our bank account.

As always we discuss a lot of things that are out there to help support the military family during financial struggles and also just learning to live within your means.

Episdose 18: Girl Chat with Rebecca Kenny

On today's episode we introduce you to one of our Fort Bragg Coordinators helping get amazing and fun events out to the Deployed Love Family at Fort Bragg. She joins us today to tell us her story.

We plan to start bringing on new spouses each month to hear their stories and really help you relate to the military community. We all have different stories and we all overcome things in our own ways, so it is really interesting to see how that looks through other peoples eyes.

Hello Everyone, welcome back to Ruck Up Buttercup, we are so glad to have so many awesome listeners and we hope if you are going through a deployment that you are hanging out with us on Facebook in our group Deployed Love Hearts Connected. This month we are bringing you some really great resources to help you on your journey through military life. Today Ashley and I have a guest you may know from a recent webinar on Deployed Love’s Facebook. We are excited to have Scarlett back here with us again today and to dig in a little more on how the Choose Love movement can be used in our military family homes! A little back story on Scarlett Lewis, if you haven’t heard of her she is an amazing woman, and one of the parents of the Sandy Hook shooting. She went through an unbelievable tragedy that we can’t even imagine having to endure, but chose to take her grief and bring something to schools, communities and families across the nation to help them also come out of difficult times they may endure. Scarlett started what is called the Jessi Lewis Choose Love Movement and has been working since to make sure that her awesome equation she created helps others. Welcome Scarlett!! So for today we have decided to break down that equation with your help and help our military community see just how significant this could be for us to understand and use in your lives. So the first thing is Courage. So we ask of you, how do we choose courage when we are facing all the many fears that the military life brings from frequent moves to the very real possibility of death during deployments?

Courage( Less anxiety, stress, fear, enhanced self esteem, improved ability to express ones feelings, self-awareness, willingness to take on difficult things) So the next part of the equation is Gratitude. When we think of gratitude we think this applies so much to the military life and the murphy’s law we all tend to endure during deployments. How can we use gratitude to help us look at the positive side of the military life?

Gratitude (Positive attitude towards self and others, improved attitude towards learning, appreciation and kindness, mindfulness, see others perspectives and show empathy) So the 3rd step to the method is Forgiveness. In the military life this step really hits when we are talking about the resentment we all too often hear spouses talk about during times of separation, how do you choose forgiveness in those times in order to have a stronger and healthier relationship?

Forgiveness (Healthier relationships, emotional regulation, less anger, better able to handle issues, resilience, decision making skills, self management.)

The last part of the Choose Love Movement equation is Compassion in Action. How can we be compassionate with our community as we all go through difficult times?

Compassion in Action (Enhanced connections, respond in a loving manner, more caring and concern shown to others, improved social skills, social and moral awareness) Find the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation at: www.chooselovemovement.org

June at Deployed Love and here at Ruck Up Buttercup is all about Mental Health and Self-Care we know how easy it is to give and give and not take the time for yourself. So we will be bringing you some great resources to help you add a little self-care to your life this summer. Today we had a special guest with us to talk about anxiety and depression and how it can affect you during deployment. We have Odonna Whiddon she’s a full time mom, and part-time Counselor & Coach. She has for 18 years and has 3 boys. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan College for Women and a Master’s degree in Community Counseling from Columbus State University. She has been doing Christian Counseling for more than a decade. Thank you so much for joining us today!!

During this episode we dug in and talked about anxiety and depression, and just how important it is to identify if you are going through times of stress when you should look for help during those hard times. Anxiety and Depression are normal, and you aren’t in this alone. There is so many people in your community who have had experiences with anxiety or depression. Especially in the military life as it breeds anxiety and depression when you are constant living in the unknown.

We talked about some great ways to use self-care to manage anxiety and depression, but also knowing the importance of reaching out to a good counselor or doctor when things you are doing on your own just aren’t allowing you to live your life fully and you need a little help. We often resist the idea of seeking help for anything and it doesn’t make you weak, instead it really allows you to learn how to be your strongest.

We talked about quite a few really good resources all of which are listed here:

Ruck Up Buttercup is a podcast hosted by Sabrina Johannes and Ashley Brown in association with Deployed Love. On this week’s episode, we had on 3 amazing guests to our show. Elizabeth Hennion Pierce, Deborah Golden, and Julie Mocabee. They represented Air Force, Navy and Marines. It was such a nice conversation to get to know how being a spouse in each branch is a little different, but we are all in the same military family together. As part of the fun, since of course when branches come together we had to have a little competition, we asked the ladies some really hard military trivia.

Here are the questions, how many of them did you know?

  1. When is your branches b-day? (Army June 14, Navy October 13, Marine November 10, Airforce September 18)

  2. Based on Population which base is the largest? (Fort Bragg)

  3. How many US Presidents have served? (29)

  4. Do you know your branch motto? (Army: This we’ll defend, Navy:NO OFFICIAL but unofficially Not Self, But country, Marines: Semper Fidelis: Always Faithful, Airforce: Aim High, Fly Fight Win)

  5. How many times has the USA declared war? (5)

  6. How many 5 star generals have there been? (5)

  7. How many military branches does the USA have? (7 Army, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard, Airforce, National Guard, and Space Force)

  8. Can you translate the following acronyms: SFRG-Solider and Family Readiness Group PCS =Permanent Change of Station NOK- Next of Kin JAG- Judge Advocate General corps MRE- Meal Ready to Eat PX- Post Exchange AAFES- Army and Air Force Exchange Service ACS- Army Community Services

We had so much fun getting to know these amazing spouse with stories and backgrounds that were all very different. They all had some amazing advice for new or been around the blocks a few times spouses.

Episode 7 of Ruck up Buttercup Interview with Brave for my Family Davidson Whetstone and his Dad Dave. Ruck up Buttercup is a podcast hosted by Deployed Love with Co-Hosts Sabrina Johannes, and Ashley Brown. Join us in a fun conversation each month, about a different topic, and how it works into our lives as military spouses, military children, and friends. On this episode of Ruck up Buttercup Sabrina, and Ashley sit down and have a really heartfelt conversation with Davidson Whetstone and his dad Dave about their book Brave for my Family. Davidson wrote the book when he was very young and his father helped by illustrating it. We touch on beautiful topics of what it means to be a military kid, and how Dave being injured on a deployment was hard to deal with but also brought really fun experiences into their lives including meeting now President Joe Biden. Davidson’s advice to military kids who are going through deployments with their parents gone is “Keep praying, and just stay hopeful, and hold on a little longer until he comes home.” It was really nice as a parent to hear a child’s encouraging words to their peers and to see that through hard times they remain resilient!! During our conversation we also got to hear from an active duty military member really their perspective on how “being in the military is a family business” that everyone who is involved makes sacrifices and we are all in this together. Like he said, “each deployment is another rock in the ruck sack, it gets harder and you get stronger with each one, but it doesn’t really get easier.” That really encompasses the truth of it, not matter how many times the military separates military families it doesn’t get easier. There is different challenges and different routines we get used to but it remains a new deployment and is still hard.

Make sure you get yourself a copy of this beautiful book, Brave for my Family by Davidson Whetstone. For any military kid in your life!

Join us in a fun conversation each month, about a different topic, and how it works into our lives as military spouses, military children, and friends. On this episode of Ruck up Buttercup Sabrina, Ashley, and Kim are back for another girl chat!! On the topic for the night was Friendship. Being a military spouse we have the exciting life of ever changing places we get to call home. This is fun as it brings many adventures, but it also brings the challenge of having to find your tribe all over again. We discussed how to make friends with awesome things like: Frg, Spouse Groups, Mops, PWOC, Book Clubs, Deployed Love, and many other options. We also touched on how to navigate spouse groups to be able to not only get the most from them but to also reach and meet people who can become life long friends. Opsec became a big conversation as we briefly go over somethings to be cautious of as a military spouse navigating the waters of social media. Mentioned in this Podcast:

Episode 2 of Ruck up Buttercup hosted by Deployed Love

Ruck up Buttercup is a podcast hosted by Deployed Love with Co-Hosts Sabrina Johannes, Kim Clagg, Sierra Cortez, and Ashley Brown. Join us in a fun conversation each month, about a different topic, and how it works into our lives as military spouses, military children, and friends. On this episode of Ruck up Buttercup Sabrina and Ashley are joined with Vince and Donna Guzman from My Beloved Marriage Ministries. My Beloved Marriage Ministries (MB) was established in Jan 2000 at their local church in Berwyn, IL. MB is a 501 c3 Non-Profit Religious Organization. Philosophy of Ministry: A strong marriage + strong parenting = a strong home. And a strong home creates a strong Army/Church. Our Vision: To equip married couples with God's plan for Marriage (Oneness Gen 2:24) & Parenting (godly offspring - Malichi 2:15) Mission Verse: Matthew 7:24-25: "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts upon them may be compared to a wise man who built his house upon the rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat against that house, and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock." They accomplish this via our 7 Pillars (attached) MB Cafe, MB Rock Groups, MB Date Nights, National Events, MB Sunday School, MB Marriage Discipleship and MB Community Outreach.

During our time with Donna and Vince we talked about our love stories, how to continue to date even during times apart, the importance of communication, and much much more. This episode is full of relatable and funny stories, of being a spouse, a parent and a friend as we talk all about relationships and growing together through Christ. There is something in here for everyone from newlyweds to those of us going on 10+ years!!

Ruck up Buttercup is a podcast hosted by Deployed Love with Co-Hosts Sabrina Johannes, Kim Clagg, Sierra Cortez Stubbs, and Ashley Brown. Join us in a fun conversation each month, about a different topic, and how it works into our lives as military spouses, military children, and friends.

On this episode of Ruck up Buttercup we discussed the 100 before 100 bucket list challenge. Sabrina introduced the challenge of sitting down and really raking your brain about 100 things you would like to do, see, or achieve before you turn 100. We all discussed many of the things that are on our list, from Girl Scout Tattoos, Disney World Marathons, Handstands, and Travels overseas.

We veered off course at times discussing how organizations like Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Deployed Love allow you to grow amazing connections with people in the military community that aren’t specifically associated with your particular unit your military member is associated with. Allowing you to have those deep military conversations, with someone who gets it. These organizations are great ways to build your tribe and your kids tribes during your time at Duty Stations.

Many of our goals/bucket list items we discussed were great travel locations state side as well as internationally that we would love to see, we discuss if there was no rules, money, etc where would you go with and without kids. And really dug in deep to how much being a military spouse allows you amazing opportunities to see the world and different parts of the country you might not have ever went and seen without being stationed there. Really discussing how each duty station becomes what you make it! We ended this episode on a really fun topic of food, and the crazy things we have tried. As well as fun date night activities including trying one of everything on a menu, and ordering what the person in front of you ordered.
