With 25 years experience in the financial services field, Paul McGowan is the one to listen to!

His catchy branding under 'Better Call Paul' (a tip of the hat to the Netflix series "Better Call Saul") definitely makes you stop and take note when you see him online!

Paul talks about how you can't please everyone on social media and has had some negative comments around the 'Better Call Paul' brand, but the majority of people love it, me included and it really helps him stand out.

He realised how important estate planning was years ago and recommended that every advisor should offer it as a service, so much so that his passion is now in training other mortgage brokers on how to help clients in this area.

Paul spends most of his time on LinkedIn so you can catch him on there if you'd like to have a chat to him about how his training works.

2021 marks the 10 years anniversary of Heron Financial, I'm not sure if Matt ever had to foresight to see how big it would actually grow with a team of over 30 staff and it's own bespoke 'Everglades' software that he has been an integral part of developing.

We talk about what he looks for when hiring staff and it was great to hear how fondly he talks about hiring apprentices and see them grow over the years that he works with.

One thing you'll notice is how Matt always talks about how great his team are, that he hires people who know more than him and he actually distracts the team when he goes into the office- they eventually tell him to get lost so they can get on with their work!

Matt talks about how important outsourcing his social media is, especially to free up time but to give his company verification when people search him online.

He's a lovely guy and it was a pleasure interviewing Matt, you'll get tonnes of value from this episode. If you wanted to connect with Matt:

I was excited to get Matt on as he's successfully done the one thing that I always talk about: creating a name for himself whilst working for another company

Matt worked for a mortgage brokerage and after he was made redundant in 2020 he set up his own company: Poole Family Financial. When calling up his past clients to tell them that the company he used to work for had gone under the majority thought it was his company anyway! The reason they thought this is because he was the face of someone else's business - which he did on social media.

Now with his own business he uses social media to create a local following by promoting local companies and is always on LinkedIn sharing his personal stories which gain some exciting traction.

An interesting part of the podcast is to hear how Matt tried being a mortgage broker at the start of his working career, but it didn't fit at the time, so he went into banking. A few years later he became an extremely successful mortgage broker: so remember it doesn't always work first time!

This is a class episode with a down to earth family man who's company slogan is "Let our family look after yours"

You can connect with Matt on his socials here:

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PooleFamilyFinancial

Jack Scarff has flipped  social media on it's head: instead of always asking for business he just gives out free, valuable content

It all started when he released informative videos last year and found that people started to call him "The Mortgage Mentor." So when it came to setting up his own business during the pandemic, he had to use this name!

The Mortgage Mentors has gone from strength to strength and he puts a lot of the success down to social media. This includes setting up a separate YouTube channel to give property investors tips on property terms and the buying process.

We also have an interesting conversation about how personal you should be on social media, opposed to showing how experienced you are in your field.

Honoured to have Samantha Cerrone on the podcast, a close friend of mine that hired me as a negotiator over 6 years ago and taught me pretty much everything I know about estate agency.

Sam made the brave decision to go it alone in the Summer of 2020, after working for both an independent and corporate estate agents in the past.

Armed with 15 years experience in estate agency and a never give up attitude, Sam has built a phenomenal portfolio, with her ethos of "let me help"

We have worked together on Sam's social media since last summer and with a following of 1600 people Sam now generates over 50% of her valuations through Facebook alone, showing how hard she's worked at increasing her brand presence in the local area of Redditch.

Sam was once hesitant to do videos, but armed with a selfie stick and a professional videographer Sam jumps between candid property update videos in her car and bespoke property tours.

If you're looking how to win on social media then Sam is the one to follow:

Gareth Davies runs a successful brokerage on the south coast and has aptly named his business "South Coast Mortgage Services"

We talk about how we got into the mortgage world by attending a group interview as a favour for his recruiter friend and it went from there.

Dealing with challenging cases from day one gave him invaluable knowledge of how lenders look at cases and says it has put him in good stead to help customers today.

It was great to discuss how his logo was the start of some beautiful social media posts . Over the last 18 months of working together he has started to get noticed in his local area for his social media presence.

Gareth, aside from playing as much golf as work and family life allows, also specialises in equity release. His personal and genuine caring approach to equity release is helping to remove the stigma surrounding it.
