If you are gonna have a career or plan to work after you retire, at least make it something you thoroughly love to enjoy and if you are really lucky a loved one will be able to join you on your next chapter of life. The journey for Steeples and Peoples podcast this week brings us to Mazzaroth Vineyard in Middletown Maryland. I’d love to tell you we sat down with co-owner Garry Cohen and had a discussion but it was a bit more than that. His energy for what he and his wife put into their vineyard is glaring and we are looking forward to sharing with everyone the passion and non-stop level of the pursuit of the best wine that you will ever taste.

The foundation of our world is rocks. They come in many different sizes, shapes, colors and textures. On the Steeples and Peoples podcast this week Richard Bailey, long time owner of Earthly Elements joins us to talk about his passion for these treasures from the ground. He shares about how as a young boy in Dallas he became fascinated with rocks and his personal business as a child that was unique compared to other 6 year olds. Richard talks about how he travels to find various different rocks at shows around the country that are considerably valuable but yet maintains his focus of providing opportunities for kids to purchase their only jewels at a reasonable cost. A Renaissance man himself, Richard shares with us about how he has parlayed his rocking world at the yearly festival.

In 1979 it started then 2 years later a migration to Frederick County occurred and a small piece of land was purchased with a dream of growing a vineyard and creating one of the best wines that your palette could enjoy. The Steeples and Peoples podcast visits Elk Run Vineyards and talks with majority owner, Fred Wilson. Fred shares with us what led him to the Mount Airy location, how his passion became a reality and the growth they have had since their humble beginnings in the early ‘80’s. Fred tells about where you can find his delightful product aside from the vineyard. He talks about the products that they have and what is their #1 seller. If you're looking for entertainment Elk Run offers that as well. The scenic drive and quaint setting is worth it and oh topping it off with some of the best wine you may ever enjoy adds to this incredible experience.

As winter sets upon in the next month, Frederick has annual traditions that keep spirits high, when it is dark at 5 pm and cold. We were fortunate enough to connect with one of the key people behind the Boats on the canal or Sailing through the Winter Solstice. The Steeples and Peoples podcast sat down with Peter Kremers, who has played an intricate role in the growth and production of this Frederick original. Peter talks about his role in the organization and what else they do besides the boats. He shares with us when the boats will be launched, how charity is the main goal for this non-profit and how they have continued to grow since their inception in 2016. Get your warmest coat, gloves, and a hat ready to go visit this year’s version of Sailing through the Winter Solstice on the canal, as I am sure you will be delighted, as always!

Exercise, wine, and cider, now that sounds like a fun time to me. As the leaves turn colors and the weather becomes crisp an annual event occurs in another one of Frederick County Maryland’s hidden jewel towns, the Spook Hill Wine and Cider 4K in Burkittsville. The Steeples and Peoples podcast was able to sit down with race director, Bill Susa and discuss the event and some of the history behind Burkittsville and the museum that highlights it. Bill talks about where the profit from the race goes, the course and the finish line recognition. If you run, walk or skip for exercise this is a good opportunity for you to enjoy a day filled with helping others, staying fit and enjoying the post race fun!

Chocolate as we very well know comes in many shapes, forms and sizes. Sometimes we think that you can never have too much chocolate. It soothes the soul and comforts during struggling times. Now that I think about it, chocolate is almost like a religion. On the Steeples and Peoples podcast this week we feature the owner and chocolatier of Perfect Truffle, Cody Marwine. Cody talks about what led him to his passion of producing perfect truffles for all to enjoy. He gets into his journey from Frederick County and what led him back. He talks about the process of making the truffles, defines for us just what a chocolatier is and some of the more recent additions he has added to his store along with how you can purchase them near or far.

After a small hiatus the return of the Art at the Park festival is rejuvenated and ready to rock again in late September. The Steeples and Peoples podcast made the picturesque drive out to Point of Rocks Maryland and spoke with Pamela Lesch and Shannon Sutter about the return of this incredible community event. They shared with us some history about the event and how it has some new wrinkles this year that will surely be a hit. They talked about entertainment, the artists that take part in the event and of course the food which is all made by the Point of Rocks Ruritan Club. Circle the date on your calendar after listening and we will see you all at the return of Art at the Park, Point of Rocks Festival.

Leaves changing, crispy evenings with bonfires to keep you warm and oh, how can I forget hot apple cider. Yes, we love fall at our house so much so that we visited on this episode of the Steeples and Peoples podcast one of Maryland’s original pumpkin patches, Jumbo’s. We met with Jessica (niece)and David(Uncle) Huffer, who represented the family in talking all things Jumbo’s Pumpkin Patch. They share with us all the new things to expect at Jumbo’s this season along with some of the mainstays that they have always had. They talk about how the farm continues to be a functioning farm as well as a pumpkin patch to celebrate fall along with how the name came about and so much more. Get those hoodies ready as fall is right around the corner and Jumbo’s pumpkin patch will help you enjoy the season.

Changes, Origination, and historical site that has transcended throughout its origination into one of the best kept secrets not only in Emmitsburg but in Frederick County. The Steeples and Peoples podcast is honored to have the fortunate opportunity to not only interview one, two or three but five of the most instrumental individuals who make the Carriage House Inn the gem that it is. We dip into the transformation through the ages and the variety of backgrounds of the management team including the Executive Chef. We discuss the menu for both lunch and dinner along with some of the favorites and “must tries”. We talk about the catering options outside of the building and all the great things that happen in the events area. If this doesn’t prime you up to listen, I am not sure what exactly will. ENJOY!!!

One just wasn’t enough so two were created! In what’s sure to be another success story Steeples and Peoples podcast talks with Rockwell Brewery owners Paul Tinny and Matt Thrasher. Six years in and they talk about their success, the need to or should I say the want to open a new location that they deem as more of an experience as opposed to just another brewery. Matt and Paul share information about the future of Rockwell Brewery and their vision that will allow them to continue to grow as one of the best breweries in Frederick County. Collaborations, giving back and a strong community tie is what they hang their hat on, so make it a point to visit both the new and old location.

Animal Lovers inhabit almost every square inch of Frederick County. On almost any day of the week you notice a loyal owner taking their trustee dog for a walk in the city. Our guest this week on the Steeples and Peoples podcast are the backbone behind the support and love that is needed to protect and take care of the pets without homes. Betee Brown, founder of FFOCAS and her cohort Kathleen Clancy Jefferson have been the face of an organization that helps the Frederick Animal Shelter with its many needs. Without Frederick Friends of Our County Animal Shelter many of the local pets would not be able to make it. FFOCAS is a non-profit group that helps to raise funds and provide support for the shelter. They will discuss the origin of the group, how they have grown and the latest and greatest events they will be holding as they work towards an upgrade of the Animal Shelter that has been in existence since the 1970’s.

Our guests this week on the Steeples and Peoples podcast are the new owners of Uncle Ralph’s Cookies which will soon be rebranding to Uncle Ralph’s Bakery. Rome Ramsburg and Tom Rogers, both former employees, have decided rather than watching their longtime Frederick employer close its doors permanently that they would take their combined 26 years of experience and give it a go themselves. They talk about how they plan to institute their rebranding and what people in Frederick should be looking out for as they continue their growth in the industry. Who doesn’t like a one stop shop? Purchasing your flowers and plants, getting some fresh eggs and cheese and having a beer while you make a food truck purchase all while listening to some local musicians. Our guest on this episode of the Steeples and Peoples podcast is the jack of all trades from Thanksgiving farms, Louisa Zimmerman Roberts. Lousia talks with us about how her family turned a small farm into a thriving local community treasure. She shares with us all the different types of flowers and plants that they offer in their 24 greenhouses. Some of the variety of products that they have weekly in the gift shop (which too be honest is the largest gift shop I have ever experienced at a farm) and how to get involved with Community Supported Agriculture. Louisa would also be remiss if she didn’t talk a bit about the origin of the beer and weekend events that they hold. So make the drive out to Adamstown and get gobbled up by all the excitement at Thanksgiving Farms.

Lights, Camera, Action!!! On this episode of Steeples and Peoples All Things Frederick County Maryland we will interview Laurie Robb and Joe Kunce from Warehouse Cinemas on Route 40, The Golden Mile in the old Fredericktown Mall location. They will talk about partnerships that have been developed around the Frederick community and the special events that they hold and are available for.
