Yes You Are Brave: Recent Episodes

Pawnee Simons

This is a place to rediscover your brave. We are all brave, but most of us have forgotten that. We spend our time and effort hiding behind excuses and labels. Most that we give ourselves. We will cover internal topics/struggles as well as big events outside of our control. And how we pick ourselves up and learn to be brave again after life knocks us flat. (I learned to be brave and when cancer took my dad I felt I lost it all.) Now I am setting off on a journey to be the brave person I have always wanted to be. Come with me as we take little steps to be brave and build the lives we want. Especially when things don‘t go according to plan. Follow the journey @findingpawnee on Instagram.

Are you feeling stuck? Today's episode is for me, so I can have some accountability. But there are lots of great things for you in it too.----more----

Let's face the fear of the edit together. I am writing a book and am at the point where it is time to edit. And edit a lot. But it is scary. We all reach places in our goals that are scary and we allow fear to keep us stuck.

If this is you no matter your goal I have some tips for you.

  • First reach out for help, and accept the feedback that comes.
  • Realize there is no right or wrong answers, just answers
  • Stop worrying
  • It is ok to change your mind
  • Set up some accountability for yourself including a plan, schedule and rewards.
  • Be in the scary.
  • Find balance and
  • Own the self-sabotage.

Life is amazing but it is hard. And to reach any of our goals we need to face the scary. But you are worth the effort. And in the end, there are no right tor wrong answers for your life, just answers. As long as you are doing things with intention and purpose you will make it. ----more----

Honestly this one is for me. It was recorded on Dad's birthday because no matter how long he has been gone he is still important. Your people are still important no matter how long it has been or what other people say.

----more----

So pause and take a minute. Let the day matter, because they matter. Let it hurt, even as you are celebrating the progress you have made. Sit with what is and process as it comes. Be brave enough to acknowledge that the loss will always be there. A part of you but not define you. ----more----

In the crazy hustle culture of today, it is easy to feel like you are not enough. But feelings are not truth. You are enough. And the way to feel that way is to do yourself a solid and lighten up. Stop putting so much pressure on you and take a break.

----more----

Today we talk about taking a break. And how as a human, and not a machine, we are not made to be go, go, go all the time. We need time and space to relax and do nothing. Even if it is just for a little while.

----more----

Be brave. Be the voice of reason that you need. Be brave enough to give yourself a break. You desire it.

How often do you say this? Do you put things off? Do you not stop because one of these times you are going to take lots of time and do the thing really big?

----more----

Let's talk about this. What happens if we wait for the perfect time to do it all? We end up waiting forever. But what if we decide that instead of trying to do it all, we just do a little piece of it? What kind of amazing life could we have if we started living it just a little at a time?

Where is your comfort zone? Notice I didn’t say happy or fulfilled zone, I said comfort zone because we can be comfortable anywhere. Even in places where we are miserable. Places we hate. How is this? Because even though we are uncomfortable, that discomfort is familiar. We know what to expect even if we don’t like it.

----more----

This week is about those doors we walk through to leave our comfort zone. To leave the familiar for what sets your heart on fire. To stop playing with the door leading back to the known. I give a real-time personal example from my own life. And honestly, this is a bit for me. To hear and know that I am brave enough to walk away for good.

Change is really hard. And not everyone around us is supportive of the changes we are trying to make in our lives. But we have to live for us and not for others. Doing that is hard. We are unsure how they will react and so we just don’t tell them. We keep our changes to ourselves and never let those around us know what we are doing.

----more----

There is merit to that. Making changes on our own timetable and not letting others influence those decisions. But sometimes we need to be brave enough to tell those close to us what we are doing. To let our family know what we are working on. Even if it is to get them to stop pushing us in the opposite direction.

----more----

It is scary to live your life the way you want. And it is even scarier to live differently than you always have in full view of those who have been there for the whole thing. Not everyone is going to be supportive of your choice to change, but you are living your life for you. You get to decide just how you want to live and to live that beautiful amazing life whenever and wherever you want.

----more----

So set yourself free and live your life. Be the new you in front of the old crowd. And if they are not loving and supportive, then you know it may be time to find a new crowd. That’s ok too. ----more----

What do you do when you hit a wall? When that inevitably happens on your way to your goals how do you react? Many of us respond in one of two ways. By pushing our way through, with brut force, or by giving up and turning around. But what if there is another option?

----more----

What if we change the way we think about resistance and let it be a teacher? What could we learn if we were just willing to ask some questions and do some exploring? Come and let’s explore the ways we can learn, even when we hit walls. Let’s discover a new and perhaps more helpful way of dealing with resistance.

----more----

Because we are all going to face resistance. We all have moments when our mind says not. But if we ask why we learn and grow. And we also have a chance to find the path through the wall in a way that allows us to continue.

Come join us this week as we talk to a wonderful gem of a person with a lifetime of experience in being and teaching creativity. Melissa is a theatre professional and teacher who has spent the last three decades dedicated to the arts. In all the big and small ways being a voice for the arts and helping kids find a safe place to discover their voice.

----more----

In this episode, Melissa shares her wisdom and lessons from a life of being creative. On stage as an actor, then as a director and teacher. Then ways to help children, hers and others be creative. We get a unique perspective of a brave person working to live her best life

----more----

Melissa Ohlman-Roberge has been a maker for as far back as she can remember. She calls herself a “creative instigator” because for her, the process of creating - especially in collaboration with others - is often far more enriching than the product.

----more----

Melissa grew up in an artistic family. Her father was a writer and self-taught musician.  Her mother painted and worked in chalk pastel - primarily portraits she would cull from National Geographic and Life magazines. Her siblings, two sisters, and a brother, are also artists of various sorts - two in the music industry, one, a visual artist.

----more----

Melissa grew up in the small town of Cheshire, Connecticut. She studied visual art, music, and theatre throughout high school. Eventually, she gravitated toward musical theatre and earned her MFA in Directing from Florida State University. She has worked professionally as a director, musical theatre director, performer, mentor, and educator for over 30 years and has created over 100 productions.

----more----

She currently lives in North Carolina with her husband and two of her three daughters. As a family, they have created many productions and much art together, and Melissa wouldn’t have it any other way. Some of her fondest memories involve sitting on the floor and coloring while asking her then-young daughters questions about their day. These simple acts have filled her with the joy, wonder, and curiosity that are the hallmark of her work to this day.

Let’s talk sleep. More specifically, what we are giving up by not sleeping. Because it is important, no matter what people claim. And staying awake when we know we need to sleep, for no reason, is just letting fear drive the bus. It is allowing our FOMO (FEAR of missing out) to keep us in a fog. And ironically, keep us from truly being able to live our best life.

----more----

Join me as we talk sleep. How being brave really can be as simple as turning the lights off and crawling in bed. How taking back our lives can start with saying, “I am done for today.” And allowing yourself to rest. It is a huge brave masquerading as a little brave. Because to sleep as much you need to go against the popular grain. Living in fear (FOMO) is following a massive crowd. And it takes brave to walk away and do your own thing.

----more----

Full disclaimer, I am neither a doctor nor a scientist. What I am however is a person who has learned the hard way the importance of sleep. Hard-won wisdom through trial and error. Lots of trial and error. But you don’t need to be a doctor or scientist to understand that the human body is amazing. Twenty minutes with a book or documentary will inform you of that. It can do so much, but only if we give it what it needs to flourish.

----more----

And if you are a parent with small children, this probably does not apply to you. :)

We all have someone that we look up to. A hero. Someone who inspires and makes us want to do better. Who makes us feel like we can do anything. Many of us have many heroes. But are we forgetting the most important one of all?

----more----

What if we look at heroes differently? What if we changed our expectations and became our own heroes? It sounds a little ridiculous perhaps. But what’s wrong with looking up to yourself? What is wrong with being the person you rely on? What’s wrong with being a hero that comes in and saves you?

Ever find yourself on a roll? Like things are going well, you are making progress towards your goals. Your dreams are in sight. (Sure you need binoculars, but you can still see them.) And when all is going well, you freak out. A little at first and then more. Then you start looking for a reason to take a detour. Sound familiar.

----more----

This week we talk about being brave enough to not take that detour. To stay on the path that is going to where you really want to go instead of taking the out. What do we do when we are trying to be different and difficult situations come up? How do we choose to react when the old self and the habits of the new us are at odds? Can we choose the more difficult, but more rewarding path?

Sometimes life is heavy. Sometimes life is hard. Because things happen that are out of our control. They hurt no matter the brave face we put on. And often we are angry about those things. What do we do with that anger? How do we keep it from consuming us?

----more----

This week we talk about one solution to dealing with anger when it comes. Or comes again. Instead of trying to fight that anger. Or trying to stamp it out. Or keep it from coming. That we welcome it instead. We pull up a chair and sit with it. Sit with the anger, and feel it totally and completely. Then we let it go.

----more----

Life is heavy sometimes, and we are angry sometimes. But that does not mean that we can’t still find peace. Tough times can have moments of peace, but that peace is often on the other side of anger.

What makes you happy? Seriously what makes you, specifically you happy? As in the different or perhaps odd thing that you love. That you could geek out for hours about. What is that?

----more----

Today we talk about letting the geek out. Allowing that part of us to be seen. Allowing the feeling of freedom that comes with not holding back. Because we all have something small or seemingly silly that makes us happy. And most of the time we hide that. We stifle our happy because we don’t want to bother those around us.

----more----

Your geek is a wonderful part of you and they deserve some sunshine. Let them out and let yourself be happy.

If you are on a hike, where is your focus? If you are like many people, myself included, it is on where you are placing your feet. Because it is the best way to not fall on your face. And that is a fair thing to want. To NOT fall on your face. (Hey I live in the desert, falling while hiking could very well include landing on a cactus.)

----more----

But if we only look at our feet, what are we missing? Do we get done and miss all the beautiful scenery? I hope not. Metaphorically and literally. Please don’t miss out on all that life has to offer. Be brave and look up from time to time. Even if that means you need to stop moving. Look up and see the wonderful things around you. Look up and see where you are needed and look up to find life.

----more----

We get so caught up sometimes in just putting one foot in front of the other that we lose sight of the bigger goal. To actually live and not just survive. Looking up helps us live. Pause and look. Look and find life.

----more---- The journey and challenge to look up continues. Follow more of it on IG @findingpawnee.

We all fall down. It sucks, but it is just a fact of life. At some point or another, we will all fall flat on our faces. (Literally and figuratively.) And it is extremely easy to think of falling as failing. But what if the two are not the same. What if falling was just another way of moving you forward?

----more----

There is no getting around falling. But falling is only failing when we choose to not get up. Movement toward our goals is never wasted and it is never failing. This week let’s take a few minutes and rethink failure. Because success is what we decide it is. And not reaching the exact picture isn’t failing.

----more----

You can fall forward. Again and again. And each time you do you will learn something new. You will grow and you will be better equipped to keep getting better. To keep getting up. Don’t give up on yourself. Keep getting up.

Are you ready for a subtle kind of brave? The brave that allows you to reach for hope instead of despair. Reach for the good instead of the bad. Brave is not always big and bold. Sometimes in our lives, we have no control over where we are. Through no choice of our own, we are in a place where we do not want to be. Sometimes it is personal and sometimes it is global. But no matter what variety of crazy we are in the dust will always settle.

----more----

What do we do when that dust starts to settle? What choices do we make when it comes time to move? Do we sit scared or take steps forward?

----more----

This week we talk about moving forward after big events. After the crazy. And we do it through a few random examples that appear to have nothing in common. Sometimes we need a poet’s words to give us permission to move. And we need a powwow to lift our spirits so we can make personal changes and take little steps forward.

There is an attitude running wild in the world, that we must always be moving/pushing forward. ‘Never look back’ is shouted at us from all sides and we are constantly told to focus on what is ahead.

----more----

But sometimes moving forward is super hard. And no matter how we twist and turn we can’t seem to get out of the deep mud and actually move. There is something holding us back but no amount of forward focus tells us why.

----more---- Let’s explore what it might mean to step back. Not to stay but to find peace, rise above fear and resolve old issues. What if stepping back, ever so briefly, could really be the key to moving forward? Tune in this week to hear how I found some unexpected healing by stepping back. Let’s talk about words and how we use them. Let’s talk about the positive and negative effects of our words.

----more----

Words have power. What we say matters. Many people will argue that its just words and that they can’t really hurt you. But those people are not being honest with someone. Likely themselves. Because words can hurt. And their effects are felt beyond a physical wound.

----more----

How could we change the world if we were careful with our words? How many lives could we turn around by offering hope instead of hurt? We can do so much with the language we use it is amazing.

They say we have to own our lives right? The good and the bad. What about the embarrassing? Have you ever thought about owning your embarrassment? It is a strange concept I know. But it has some awesome effects.

----more----

Let me put it a different way, what if you could stop giving other people your power? Interested now? We give away our power so often that we don't always see that we are doing it. But we give it away and give it away and then wonder why we feel so powerless.

----more----

And as humans we often make others feel dumb for simply being human. But they can only make us feel about it if we let them. Being human is a wonderful, amazing thing and it is full of less than graceful encounters. (with floors, doors, sidewalks, etc.) And mishaps in all their forms. The crazy continues. This world we live in feels a bit like a powder keg. But what do we do about it? How do we handle all the terrible things that keep coming?

----more----

The first thing to do is to be nice to yourself. Be soft and gentle. Keep yourself from falling apart. You are worth the effort. And when it comes right down to it, you cannot help anyone if you are curled up in the corner.

----more----

When the world gets heavy, and it is always going to be heavy, take care of you. Don’t push so hard. Take time to feel it and work through it. Remember this is most definitely a distance race and not a sprint. Be gentle with yourself, and then you can be in a place to help others.

Life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies. Sometimes it is hurricanes and tornadoes. Those can be literal and/or figurative. And one of the best things we can do for ourselves in this situation is to admit that we are not ok.

----more----

When we lie to ourselves and insist we are ok, we cause more struggle. Our minds and bodies know we are lying and the reaction is not good. Sometimes when we admit we aren’t ok, it helps us be ok.

----more----

Be honest and kind to yourself. And then to others as well. The world we live in is now set permanently to crazy, and it is impossible to be ok all the time. Own it so you can work through it. It’s a little scary, but you are brave and so worth it.

How do you own your dreams? How do you claim those dreams for yourself? Step one: own them. Own them by saying them out loud. Stop being afraid to voice what it is you want. Give your dreams a voice. Your voice. Literally.

----more----

Let your dreams out of your head. Remember your head is not very big. There is not enough room in your head for your dreams to reach their full potential. There is not enough room for them to grow and change. We can not live fully in our heads.

----more----

Speak your dreams out loud. Tell the universe/God/your higher power what you want and then start moving. You will be surprised what happens.

In this episode, Global Education Allies is mentioned here is the link to their website.https://www.globaledallies.org/  If you are a teacher looking for a fun way to earn continuing education credits, check them out.

The last few years have been hard. And we have all lost something or someone. That loss often feels like something falls out of the sky and lands on our heads. It leaves a mark. It is up to us to figure out what to do with that mark. How we are going to handle repairing the damage and moving forward.

----more----

This episode talks about how we can explore the crater of loss and grief in our lives. Every loss impacts us differently and requires a different reaction.

----more----

Feelings of grief and loss are not limited to death. They come when we lose important parts of our life. Many of them are not tangible. But they still need to be dealt with so they don’t hold us back.

----more----

Let’s explore what our loss has done. Take stock of where we are and make an intentional decision about what we would like to do next.

Welcome to the month of LOVE! I say that with a bit of sarcasm. Many people don’t love the love month. They hate red and pink and all laser focus on one’s relationship status. And that is fair. And honestly, that is the camp I usually fall in. But what if we take a little different view of love.

----more----

Most of us have worked really hard to love other people. But how hard have you worked to love yourself? What kind of time and effort have you put into your relationship with yourself? It sounds more than a little silly and maybe downright crazy. Think about it for a moment though. You spend the most time with yourself. You talk to yourself the most.

----more----

So maybe this year we take a brave new stand and start down the path of loving ourselves. It is hard, but also a worthwhile endeavor. One that leaves you with confidence and a framework to be truly happy.

----more----

You are worthy of love and respect. You matter enough to do the work to develop that amazing relationship with yourself. Love doesn’t have to suck. Listen here and follow more of the journey on Instagram @findingpawnee.

You are loved!!!

Who are you living for? Do you find yourself struggling to recognize who you have become? Are you afraid to do and be you for fear of disappointing other people?

----more----

You ARE NOT ALONE! Pressure to keep others happy and comfortable is real. (Even if it is in our mind.) And it is easy to find ourselves in places we never planned on or living a life we don’t love. But the price we pay for keeping others happy is often to be unhappy ourselves.

----more----

No matter what there is going to be someone disappointed with how you are living. And there is going to be someone in awe of what you are doing. Live for yourself. Make sure you are living a life you are proud of. And when you find your happy, it will be worth the price of disappointing others.

Life is rough. And after the last few years, it would make sense to feel a little down. But you are awesome, no matter how you feel at this moment. Even if you realize some errors in your own thinking, you still deserve to reach out for help.

----more----

Mental health has come a long way. The past two years of dumpster fire have helped with that. But many of us still feel like we shouldn’t have struggled with it. It is something that other people struggle with.

----more----

It’s ok to need help. And it’s ok to need to shift your outdated opinions. Health is a journey. And if you find you are a little lost on this journey, know you are worth the effort to reach out and get help.

Have you ever thought about asking questions as a skill? We often don’t find out answers because we simply do not ask. We live at a time when we can have the answers to most questions. But only if we ask. ----more----

How do we learn to ask questions? How do we develop that particular skill? It is not as hard to reach as we may think.

----more----

Start with asking yourself questions. Small questions, big questions, uncomfortable questions. Once we get comfortable with the process of asking questions, then we can develop the skill further.

----more----

Asking questions is a skill that will improve your relationships, starting with your relationship with yourself. Let’s make 2022 the year we learn to ask questions.

What is the heaviest thing to carry around? There are many things that are heavy but I would say that regret is one of the heaviest, hardest things to carry around.

----more----

Here is a gentle push to hopefully help you not have to carry around regret. I know it is hard to put aside pride, fear, stubbornness, and so many other feelings so we can ask for what we need. This episode is a lovely and quite raw push to help you find the courage to just ask.

Life is full of struggle. And as humans, we want to be able to help others through their troubles. It’s noble and good. But if we are not careful we take on too much from those around us and it can start to destroy us.

----more----

Through recent experiences, the lesson of not trying to take on too much has set in. We all have to learn that while we can do amazing things for others, we are not superhuman. We have been given what we can handle, and that is all we have to handle.

----more----

Look at helping people from a little different perspective. And receive permission to just be you and stop feeling like you have to save everyone.

It is time to have a semi-formal introduction. Who is Pawnee and what makes her tick? This is not an all-encompassing answer rather a nutshell introduction.

----more----

How would you like to introduce yourself? Who would you be if you could choose what people know about you? What matters most is who you are and not what you do. What would you share if you could only tell people a handful of things about yourself?

----more----

Let’s start introducing ourselves in a way that feels true to who we are. And let other people introduce themselves as who they really are. This is Pawnee in a nutshell. For more on the journey, or to ask any burning question, follow on IG @findingpawnee.

We all have days when things go wrong. Where in those moments when we need things to work just as they should, something hits the fan. Or refuses to go down. Sometimes those things are huge, but often it is a small/simple thing that makes us feel the most defeated.

On the other hand, when we step up and conquer those simple things we feel super powerful. Being able to handle our own problems, no matter how small, builds confidence. You are amazing. And brave enough to conquer the little things, even if it is to prove to yourself that you can

Grief is rarely convenient. And likes to pop up in moments we don’t expect. But what if instead of hiding from it we took a moment to sit with it. To really feel it. Then perhaps we wouldn’t need to carry it all. Instead of lugging it around, we could let it go just as swiftly as it came.
