New Mommy at 40: Recent Episodes

Victoria Lauture Duncker

There are many roads to motherhood. We know this. Yet, there seem to be so many questions around those of us who start our parenting journey later in life. New Mommy at 40 is a podcast for those 35+ who are beginning their parenting journey or starting all over again. We simply have some additional concerns compared to our younger counterparts: a little fear of lack of time, a bit less energy, raising our young children while caring for aging parents, estate planning, our knees giving out as we get up from the mat while playing with our kid… HA! I’m your host Victoria -a new mommy in my 40's to a baby girl, doing the best I can and loving the ride. I'm creating a space specifically for us to share our successes, vent without judgment and have a few good laughs while at it. Each week, you can expect to hear from other real moms and dads in their 40’s, sharing their unique journeys with us-the highs and lows included. We’ll hear from experts in the fields of fertility, therapy, dating and more. You'll also have a direct hand in building this community, by contributing your own stories, and if chosen, be featured on the show! Join us every Monday! If you’d like to submit your story, email Info@newmommyat40.com. Please subscribe and follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook -@NewMommyat40 or visit our website www.newmommyat40.com

If you've struggled with keeping up with your friendships after becoming a mother, this episode is for you!

While it's easy to complain about the disappearing act of some of our friends, it's humbling to realize that we may have not been reaching out either. It certainly takes two to tango and sometimes we have to take the lead to maintain the relationships that are of upmost importance to us.

We know that for some of our friends, figuring out what you need or how to be there for you, is easier said than done.

There may also come a time, when our new life creates a dynamic that does shift the energy within a friendship and we realize that we've outgrown each other. That's ok too. There is no right or wrong. At this stage of our lives as grown ass people, we've earned the right to do what's right for us!

So Mama, if you're seeking to nurture, maintain, repair or create friendships, this is for you!

“Adoption was never a last resort for me. I always wanted one biological child and one adopted child.”

In this episode, host Victoria Lauture-Duncker interviews Daisha Enos, a 44-year-old wellness and health coach, about her journey to motherhood at 40. She discusses the comments and questions she received from family members and friends about her decision to have children later in life. While she always believed that she’d be a mother, of two - one biological child and one adopted child, she never dreamed of getting married.

After meeting her now husband Aron, she knew she had found the icing on the cake! Daisha and Aron, mutually agreed to spend the first few years of married life together and wait to start their family. She credits him for being supportive early of her wishes for their family dynamic.

The story behind their adoption process is a MUST LISTEN. It is truly a testament in that when something is meant for you, it is meant for YOU!

My biggest takeaway from my chat with Daisha?

Being specific about what you want and going after it can lead to incredible outcomes. Also, that it’s important to have a positive mindset and be open to learning from setbacks and challenges. Incredible!

What I love about this episode, is the prospective she has 15 years later, and literally watching the fruits of her love blossom into the beautiful young woman she's been raising! She's fluent in 3 languages, a black belt in martial arts, a great student-oh...and did I mention a PILOT!?

Tamara is a manifesting powerhouse! I hope she inspires all those who are new older mamas or mamas-to-be, that the possibilities are endless and age alone is LIMITLESS!

This Black History Month and Valentines' Day, I want to put the spotlight on something that's very important to me, Black Maternal Health. We're releasing two episodes today, dedicated that very topic. Maternal health has long been a concern in America for women of all color. The CDC has found that about 700 women die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. Every year, however, black women fare the worst dying two and a half times more often than white or hispanic women.

Part 2 is the story of Tara Eudovique. Tara is a 44 year old flight attendant and entrepreneur who is the mother of a spirited and talented three year old. Her story is a cautionary tale for women everywhere, especially for women of color. After being single for many years and being asked why, she finally found her Prince Charming and together they decided to marry and start planning their family. Looking forward to the delivery of her rainbow baby, Tara and her husband entered the hospital anticipating what should have been the happiest moment of their lives, but instead found themselves in a nightmare. We'll talk about her delivery trauma and how she's turned her experience into a passion for helping women of color find their voices throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey.

Part 1 is the story of Daneen Sekoni. After enduring 20 years of fertility issues, Daneen and her supportive husband welcomed two beautiful babies, in two years, in her 40s! As a senior policy director in healthcare, she shockingly found herself in the company of other mothers, especially those of color who find themselves caring for a new life while advocating to save their own.

Our last chat of Season 1 has us sitting down with the lovely and inspiring Camille Guaty-Kaye. While most of you may know her as a talented actor from many of your favorite TV shows and films , you'll meet a woman of perseverance, resiliency, and a heart full of love. I certainly made a new friend that I can't wait for you to meet.

She candidly shares with us her challenging road to motherhood and how it ultimately led her and her husband to letting go of their dreams of a traditional path to baby and embracing egg donor conception.

We talk about the importance of taking time to grief, to make space for the ups and downs while trying to conceive, but we also choose to laugh at some of the bumps along the way.

Get your tissues ready and be prepared to laugh...a lot. You don't want to miss this one, my friends!

We talk to Michael Pate, an actor & lead singer/guitarist of the band, Electric Black Horse. While he wears many different hats (and sometimes, leather, eye makeup and funky footwear), he makes sure that his daughter, age 7, never has to question who her father is.
His credo is showing up as you are. His insistence in authenticity has been a cornerstone in his life and now, his fatherhood journey. Michael reminds us to remain connected to who we were prior to having children and the importance in sharing the successes as well as our challenges, with our children.
Age isn't but a number to Mike, but he appreciates the life experiences along the way, which have made him the father he's never had and the father he wanted to be to his child.

Please join us for this delightful chat and male perspective on being an older parent.

Looking forward to the delivery of her rainbow baby, Tara & her husband, entered the hospital anticipating what should have been the happiest moment of their lives. Instead, they were met with a dismissive doctor, who ignored their birth plan, cut her without her knowledge or permission, later diagnosed with HELPP syndrome and left her fighting for her life. We’ll talk to her about getting thru that trauma and more. Here are some more highlights:

  • We talk about navigating expectations and stereotypes as older, single black women without children, both societally and culturally
  • The positive aspect of dating later in life and getting past “the fluff"
  • Teaching our friends on how to support by not asking “trigger” questions
  • Getting thru the 1st trimester after a miscarriage
  • The importance of self-advocacy and teaching your partner to be an informed advocate on your behalf
  • Her takeaway from her experience and her newfound passion in making sure black women and persons giving birth, to know the power of their voices.

Sarah walks us through her experience of becoming a mom over ten years ago and doing it all over again in her 40’s. We’ll talk about her desire to be mom, going around the patriarchal and ignorant aspects of the medical industry to become a mom and how’s she navigating motherhood now while co-parenting and newly single. Make sure you listen to it all, because you don’t want to miss a fun, new segment that I’m introducing with this episode: The Gen X Test, to see if Sarah, gets to keep her Gen X culture card!

In present day, her family represents many just like hers, who find themselves being interrogated, harassed, devalued and erased by certain legislation around our country. It was important to me to bring you her story, to inspire those in our LGBTQ+ community looking to be parents, to strengthen the spirit of those who currently are and to allow those who may have never had a chance to meet someone like Sarah or her family, to tear down the walls of maybe fear, judgement or just innocent ignorance, to sit with us, listen and hopefully walk away learning something new.

As we close out Black History Month this year, I wanted to put the spotlight on Black Maternal Health. This episode will be a 2-part series, dedicated to this topic.
Maternal health has long been a concern in America for women of all races. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has found that about 700 women die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth every year. However, black women fared the worst, dying 2.5 times more often than white or hispanic women. That is why, I’m so thankful to have this chat with Daneen Sekoni today. I know you’ll find her overall positivity and prospective of life, faith, and parenting infectious.

In April of 2020-the world got to know a beautiful and resilient woman’s emotional and heart-wrenching story. Newly diagnosed with COVID-19 while being 6 months pregnant and unable to breathe on her own, she was put into a medically induced coma, only to wake up many days later, as a new mommy to a very premature baby. To me, she was Jo. The woman I admired from work, a then, 39 year old rockstar, who knew that she was meant to be a mommy and that her baby was waiting to meet her. she left tradition and societal expectations at the door and designed her own path to motherhood. That’s why this episode is called: An Empowered Single Woman’s Road to Motherhood & Her Triumph Over COVID.

This episode is dedicated to all the single rockstars who are finding themselves at a mature age and longing to meet their babies. Johana Mendoza Chancay's story is a reminder that there are many roads to motherhood and one path doesn’t make you more of a mother. Remember that your road to your baby is the right one for you.
