Stories are powerful! Listen in as hunters share their stories from the field in ”The HuntLeague Podcast”. The HuntLeague app is a modern hunting journal that allows hunters to capture and share the details of their hunt with photos, video, audio, and notes. This podcast is meant to bring those stories to life.
This is the final story in the 2025 Outdoorsman of the Year Finalist Series.
Joshua Dishman isn’t just passionate about hunting — he’s passionate about sharing it.
For Josh, the most meaningful hunts of the year aren’t always his own. Each season he donates a five-day blacktail hunt to a veteran or first responder, mentors youth hunters, and introduces new people to the outdoors whenever he can.
In this episode of the HuntLeague Podcast, Josh sits down to share the story behind his 2025 season and what led to his selection as a finalist for Outdoorsman of the Year, the highest honor within the HuntLeague community.
This season included:
• A long-awaited backcountry hunt in Colorado
• Months of physical preparation and ruck training
• A successful muzzleloader elk hunt
• Mentoring youth hunters and first-time outdoorsmen
• Guiding a Marine Corps veteran on his first hunt
• And keeping a 37 year blacktail streak alive
But what defines Josh’s season isn’t just success in the field.
It’s his belief that hunting is about community, mentorship, and sharing the outdoors with others.
Josh works for a school district and regularly talks with students about hunting, conservation, and the value of time spent outside. He also serves as a committee member for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, helping support conservation and habitat work that protects hunting opportunities for future generations.
Inside the HuntLeague app, competitors log their hunts and scouting trips throughout the year, sharing their journey with the community. But the Outdoorsman of the Year title is not determined by the leaderboard or points alone.
A panel of respected industry partners helps select the hunter who best represents the values of the outdoors.
Judging partners include:
Vortex Optics
Seekins Precision
HUXWRX
Aziak Equipment
Mountain Tough
Four hunters rose to the top in 2025.
This is Joshua Dishman’s story.
If you believe hunting is about more than just the harvest — you’ll enjoy this conversation.

Episode 3 of 4 in the 2025 Outdoorsman of the Year Finalist Series.
Cody Paratore’s story: Husband. Father of two (almost three). Self-taught big game hunter. Student of the woods.
In 2025, Cody made a decision that changed everything — he committed to putting family first in the field. That meant scouting with toddlers. Packing blinds with snacks. Turning out-of-state hunts into family road trips. And accepting that success might take a back seat to exposure and experience. Instead, everything came together.
• His biggest bull elk
• His biggest mule deer
• His biggest pronghorn
• Three states hunted
• 12 species pursued
• Four animals harvested with his kids by his side
But this season wasn’t defined by punched tags.
It was defined by:
– A turkey hunt with his 4-year-old son
– A blacktail hunt with his daughter in a Spider-Man costume climbing on his back
– Guiding his dad to his biggest buck
– Helping his sister punch her elk tag
– Mentoring new hunters into their first success
– Grinding through an ankle injury that nearly derailed the season
The Outdoorsman of the Year award inside the HuntLeague app recognizes more than harvest photos. It celebrates dedication, discipline, conservation, mentorship, and living the values of the hunting community.
Throughout the year, competitors log their hunts and scouting days inside the HuntLeague mobile app. While their journey is visible on the leaderboard, the winner is selected by a panel of respected industry partners and judges — not by points alone.

This is Cody Manzi’s story.
Every hunting season has defining moments — success, failure, doubt, perseverance, and lessons learned the hard way. This conversation dives into Manzi's many "firsts" he experienced in the 2025 season and what earned him a place as a finalist for Outdoorsman of the Year, the highest honor in the HuntLeague community.

-Dedication

-Mentorship

-And unforgettable stories from the field
Throughout the year, hunters competing in the Outdoorsman of the Year league inside the HuntLeague mobile app log their experiences, share their stories, and build a season-long journey visible on the community leaderboard. But the leaderboard alone doesn’t decide the winner.

In Episode 5 of the HuntLeague Champions League Hunt, the crew faces their toughest stretch — two days packed with highs, heartbreak, and hard lessons.
Day 4 begins with everyone returning to the spot where Josh had spotted two bulls the day before. After the morning hunt, the team decides to break camp and relocate, giving Wally a chance to head home to process his mule deer from opening day. But the mountain had other plans.
Before Wally could leave, Jared and Brandon climbed 2,000 feet up to a remote plateau, and within minutes, Brandon dropped a beautiful bull elk — or so it seemed. As they hiked toward it, the unthinkable happened: the bull was back on its feet and vanished into the trees. With light fading, the guys made the tough call to back out and return at first light.
Day 5 brings an exhausting search to recover the bull, joined by Wally and Josh. The day unfolds with a mix of emotions — from hope to frustration — and a few unexpected interactions, including a friendly visit from Colorado Parks & Wildlife and an odd encounter with a local outfitter.
This episode is about resilience and the reality that even the best hunters face days that test everything — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
🎧 Episode Highlights:
These were the hardest days of the hunt — and the ones that reveal what it truly means to be a champion.
In Episode 4 of the Champions League Hunt, the crew splits up and the day turns into one filled with lessons, long hikes, and last minute shot opportunity.
Josh and Jared start their morning looking back towards the road where Josh spots two legal bulls. Instead of hunting toward them, Jared decides to chase new country — a 7.5-mile detour that ends with sore legs and a valuable reminder: never leave bulls to find bulls.
Meanwhile, Brandon and Wally head out in search of the big bull from the day before. The morning comes up empty, but a mid-day text changes everything — the same bulls Josh spotted earlier are back on their feet. With just minutes of daylight left, they glass the bulls sparring in a small timber opening. The wind is swirling hard, and patience becomes the game.
When the gusts finally settle, Brandon squeezes off a shot — but misses the mark. The day closes with a mix of disappointment, exhaustion, and gratitude for another wild day in the mountains.
🎧 Episode Highlights:
This episode is all about trusting your gut, learning from every decision, and pushing through the grind that defines western hunting.
In Episode 3 of the Champions League Hunt, Day 2 delivers both adrenaline and heartbreak.
The crew starts the morning glassing a herd of roughly 30 elk before Brandon locks onto a Colorado giant — a bull in the mid-300s that instantly changes the tone of the day. Mistakes were made but with hearts still racing, the team commits to an evening ambush, hoping for another glimpse of the bull.
As light fades, the plan shifts — instead of the big bull, Jared spots a bear across the canyon and takes a 960yd shot using Brandon’s rifle, adding a new twist to an already eventful day.
Exhaustion from the previous day’s canyon hike sets in, and small communication breakdowns in the moment may have cost the crew a chance at Brandon’s once-in-a-lifetime bull. This episode captures the raw side of hunting — the fatigue, the teamwork, and the lessons that only long days in the field can teach.
🎧 Episode Highlights:
This one’s about the highs and lows of a true backcountry pursuit — where every choice, every call, and every moment matters.
In Episode 2 of the Champions League Hunt, the crew wraps up their final day of scouting and dives into a bold plan — dropping more than 2,000 vertical feet into a steep Colorado canyon after spotting several promising bulls and a trio of big muley bucks.
With high hopes for opening morning, the team pushes deep into the backcountry, but soon faces the sobering reality of hunting pressure, brutal terrain, and the sheer logistics of packing an animal out of that canyon.
After a long climb back to the truck, the day takes an unexpected turn — a quick stop on the way back to camp turns into a moment of success as Wally King fills his mule deer tag on opening day.
🎧 Episode Highlights:
This episode captures the true spirit of the hunt — tough choices, teamwork, and finding success when you least expect it.
In this first episode of the HuntLeague Champions League Hunt, we’re finally in camp — four hunters, four tags, and one shared goal: make the most of Colorado’s second rifle season.
2023 Outdoorsman of the Year Wally King, 2022-23 Western Hunt League Champion Josh Dishman, 2023 Deer of the Year & current Apex Predator Champion Brandon Anderson, and HuntLeague founder Jared Newman kick off their multi-species adventure with a base camp conversation before opening day.
Josh and Brandon just made the long haul from Oregon, while Wally and Jared arrive at camp ready to put glass on animals. Together, the crew shares what it took to prepare for this hunt, the expectations heading into the mountains, and the excitement (and nerves) of chasing elk, deer, and bear with a camp full of champions.

In this Sweet September Series episode, we sit down with Keenan Molnar, an Oregon bowhunter whose pursuit of his first bull spanned nearly a decade. Keenan opens up about the long road of close calls, setbacks, lessons, and unwavering faith that kept him going year after year. When the moment finally came, it wasn’t just a harvest — it was a moment of personal triumph, gratitude, and answered prayer.
This conversation is about patience, perseverance, and honoring the journey — not just the result.
In this Sweet September episode, David King reflects on one of his most meaningful seasons yet — not because of the bull he harvested, but because of the adventure he shared with his teenage son and nephew on their first archery elk hunt. With multiple herds, high-energy calling, and a morning filled with non-stop bugles, this season was an all-out mountain experience. David’s story is a reminder that sometimes the greatest trophy is simply the time spent together in the wild.
In this Sweet September episode, we sit down with Joel Yanke, a Colorado elk hunter whose story is one of heartbreak, humility, and redemption. After years of chasing success and enduring repeated failures, Joel faced a breaking point this season — losing his first bull and nearly walking away from the hunt entirely.
What followed was a powerful moment of surrender. Leaving his bow behind for the first time in six years, Joel chose to focus on helping a friend instead — and in that selfless act, found a renewed sense of purpose and faith. Days later, against all odds, he recovered the bull he thought was lost forever.
Joel’s journey reminds us that elk hunting is about far more than tags and trophies — it’s about perseverance, community, and the grace we find when we stop chasing success and start living the story.
🎯 Sweet September celebrates effort, passion, and the personal journeys that define every hunter.

Guest: Joel Yanke
In this episode of the Sweet September Series, we sit down with JP Gorham, a newcomer to Colorado who left the hardwoods of Alabama for the rugged peaks of the Rockies. With a bow in hand and a heart full of purpose, JP embarked on his first-ever archery elk hunt—a season defined not by success on the scorecard, but by the lessons, friendships, and faith found along the way.
JP shares how a promise to his grandfather inspired his pursuit, how he learned to embrace both humility and perseverance in the face of challenges, and what it felt like to hear that first bugle echo through the mountains. His story captures the spirit of Sweet September—where the true trophy is found in the experience itself.
This is the first of four stories from the 2025 Sweet September League inside the HuntLeague mobile app. JP is new to the app and elk hunting but has found himself in the mix for the league title as one of four finalists.
🎯 Sweet September celebrates effort, passion, and the stories that shape us as hunters.

Steve Green is traveling the West with the Skre Gear booth showing hunters what Skre has to offer. No matter the season or conditions Skre has you covered.
Quality gear makes a HUGE difference in the field. Staying comfortable and being able to push through tough conditions can often be the difference between success and eating tag soup.
If you have ever hunted with me you will notice I mismatch all my gear almost on a daily basis. I want gear that works! I value function and performance over a camo pattern. Over the years I have used gear from almost all of the major companies like Kuiu, Sitka, Under Armour, First Lite, Pnuma, Stone Glacier, Wuru Wool, and of course Skre. I find more often than not I have Skre gear in the pack whether I am heading out on a scout, an archery elk hunt, or a spring bear hunt in northern Canada.
Skre offers high quality gear at a more affordable price. It is honestly some of the best gear I own. I love the super versatile hardscrabble line, merino base layers, or the warmth and weight of the ptarmigan down jacket. I have not tried their packs nor their rain gear so I can't give you any feedback from the field on those but if they are like the rest of the gear I have tried it should perform and hold up for years to come.
One other thing that sets Skre apart is their warranty. They take care of their customers the way we would want to be treated. That is a big deal inside the HuntLeague community and one of the things we look for in selecting partners inside our leagues. You see this same commitment from companies like Vortex, Seekins Precision, Coast, and more.
Checkout the entire Skre lineup at https://skregear.com/ and be sure to take a peak in their outlet from time to time where you snag high quality gear at bargain prices.

Wally King is no stranger to league finals at this point. In 2023 he was nominated as a finalists in the Western Hunter, Sweet September, and now for the Outdoorsman of the Year title. Although the crown has been elusive he has proven himself inside the HuntLeague community as a trusted voice and leader.
Wally is known as "ocdhunter" in the app. He is a planner, methodical, and a constant student of the game whether that be reading, listening to podcasts, e-scouting, drumming up new recipes with parts of the animal most hunters leave in the field, or picking up a new method of take. Wally found success this year in the field harvesting his first cow elk with a bow but he would say the highlight of his season was being with his son when he harvested his first pronghorn.
The HuntLeague app is built around capturing and sharing the story of your hunt. Our leagues are not traditional hunting contests where the winner is selected by the size or number of animals harvested. Our leagues are story based and take into account all the work that goes into a season from training days at the gym to preseason scouting trips.
We invite you to download the HuntLeague app and join our growing community. Share you story and you may find yourself in the running for next year's Outdoorsman of the Year!
Cody Paratore for the second year in a row returns to the finals competing for the 2023 HuntLeague Outdoorsman of the Year title. This year we added a new wrinkle to the competition by having our former Outdoorsman of the Year champions select the finalists from our pool of candidates.
Many people know Cody from last year's finals but he also won the On Point Experience league this year and was able to go on his first bear hunt with legendary bear hunter Garrett Weaver, Kolby Morehead from Bear Hunting Magazine, former Navy SEAL sniper and Vortex team member Nick Blough, Auburn and Brad from HUXWRX, Bradley Joyce from Wild Food Outdoors, and Jared Newman from HuntLeague. It was the trip of a lifetime that ended up being only a small part of Cody's incredible season.

Joshua Katanik was one of three finalists selected for the 2023 HuntLeague Outdoorsman of the Year. This year we added a new wrinkle to the competition by having our former Outdoorsman of the Year champions select the finalists from our pool of candidates.
Some of you may have already been introduced to Joshua late last year as he was a newcomer in the app but was able to finish on top of the Sweet September (archery elk) league. In addition to his fantastic elk season, Joshua hunted over 10 different species and found success in the field this year chasing spring bear & turkey, an Idaho wolf, pheasant, quail, waterfowl, deer, and more.

In 2024, HuntLeague is inviting the community to meet up and compete in person at multiple events across the country. Starting March 23rd we have the Accufire Team Sniper Match in Jacksboro, TX. Jared reached out to HuntLeague member and competitive shooter Chadd Torres (Stag Arms & Vortex Optics) for input on preparing for his first match.
Chadd has several years of match shooting experience and is still a student of the game. Although he has never shot this particular flavor of match he had a lot of great input into the process. With people traveling from around the country to participate it is important to make sure you come prepared with the proper gear and understand the rules of the game.
Whether you are shooting pro or just getting started you are invited to participate in the Accufire Team Sniper Match along with Jared Newman, Josh Greer (Arken Optics), and others from the HuntLeague community.

Listen in as Wade Carter tells Part A of his archery elk hunt with Taylor Hix. After burning a few points to hunt a new unit, you can count on "PrepZero" not to scout, train, or shoot his bow before stepping in the elk woods. Learn from some of his early mistakes and start building your game plan now for success.
In this episode, Wade dives into pushing through pain, communication and executing a game plan, to the beauty of being fully present in the moment. Wade and Taylor got into more elk this year than all of their previous seasons combined. Both Part A & B are filled with great stories from their encounters with elk.
In Part B, we highlighted their use of Llamas which was a game changer. Let's point out a few other pieces of gear though they used to find success that you have an opportunity to win in our 2022 Outdoorsman of the Year, The On Point Experience, and the Western Hunter leagues. Wade and Taylor have both spent a lot of time and money researching their gear for backcountry hunts. It's no surprise they both selected Vortex Optics and EXO Mountain Packs to see farther and to carry heavy loads. Wade opted to roll with First Light (On Point Experience) and loved their layering system. Taylor for the last several seasons has been rocking Skre Gear (The Western Hunter) and he can't say enough good things about both their products and customer care.

Cody Paratore shares his 2022 archery elk season where they went 3 for 3 on the Oregon coast. Cody joined the HuntLeague community in March and started strong with his spring turkey season. Now just a few months later, he is sitting in a great position to make a run at the 2022 HuntLeague Outdoorsman of the Year title.
As a responsible husband and father, Cody set out to be as efficient as possible with his time in the field. He spent the off season studying maps, listening to podcasts, taking courses, and training his body for success. This hard work paid off with full freezers, special family memories, and a happy supportive wife.
Search "Cody.P" on the community page to pull up Cody's posts and stories from this year. You can also tap his profile photo inside the app to FOLLOW his account which will send you a notification when he completes a hunt or posts to the community page in the future.

Josh started his hunting career in diapers before taking his first blacktail at the age of 9. Now at 41 years old, he has personally harvested 32 blacktail deer in consecutive years. That is certainly impressive but his passion for mentoring and helping other hunters find success is what makes him legendary. In the past two seasons alone, Josh has helped lead 25 successful blacktail hunts (he is not a guide/outfitter). You will have a hard time finding someone as passionate as Josh when it comes to blacktail hunting. There is hardly a day that goes by where he is not in the field running cameras, glassing, hiking, or scouting.
