The Psychology Of Money by Morgan Housel is widely considered as one of the most influential financial books of our age.

Rather than talking about raw numbers and formulas, the book focuses on habits and personality, arguing that most of our money decisions are driven by the stories we hear, not facts.

In this session, I broke down the first 5 chapters, shared real-life examples, and talked about how these lessons apply to our everyday financial choices.

The performance of gold has been astounding.

Since 2024, the asset is up over 82%—1 gram of it (which is about the size of a simcard) is now worth RM510, and a kilo of that (about the size of a cholocate bar) could afford you a condo.

Bitcoin, often dubbed as gold 2.0, has also been on an uptrend.

Though it has retraced in the past couple of weeks, its performance since 2024 is actually more impressive than gold – up 164%.

As of 28 Sept 2025, 1 BTC is currently $112,000, which coincidentally, could also afford you a condo, albeit a slightly cheaper one.

In this episode, financial experts Hann Liew and Sani Hamid breakdown the historic performances of both gold and Bitcoin, why they’ve increased so much in price, and the ultimate question everyone wants to know: whether it’s too late to invest.

Last Monday (July 7), Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all Malaysian products entering the US, effective August 1.

The letter, detailing to PM Anwar, sought to escalate the Malaysia-US trade relations, which Trump previously agreed to lower Malaysia’s tariffs down to a baseline of 10% while exempting semiconductors.

The reason for the “new” tariffs, according to Trump, is to “eliminate the Trade Deficit disparity” the US has with Malaysia.

In the same week, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) lowered the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) by 25 bps to 2.75%, citing “continued expansion in global growth, supported by sustained consumer spending and to some extent, front-loading activities.”

In this episode, Investment Analyst Azharuddin breaks down what Trump’s tariffs really mean, why BNM’s rate cut matters, and the stocks he’s watching closely right now.

On Monday (June 9), the government announced the revision on SST to boost revenue and strengthen the country’s finances.

To ensure that the majority of citizens remain unaffected, the administration has promised that essential goods and services will not be taxed.

But the SST document, which is over 222-pages and contains thousands of items, paints quite a different picture. Many people were shocked when they realized that imported fruits (even those that are produced locally) will be hit with the Sales Tax.

For a better idea, Malaysia imports A LOT of fruits, including apples, oranges, starfruit, ciku, lemons, rambutans, jackfruit, longans, and papayas. These will all be taxed, as long as they are imported.

This doesn’t even touch the more absurd things which the administration claims as non-essentials, such as salt, yogurt, fruit juices, butter and margarine, almost all cooking oils except palm oil, and almost all types of nuts except peanuts.

On Sunday, I invited Hann Liew, founder of RinggitPlus and Halogen Capital, to break down the SST changes and how we can cope with price increases.

On Apr 2, Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on multiple nations.

Malaysia has been slapped with 24% reciprocal tariffs, which is a 50% discount versus the tariffs we “charge” to the US, according to the White House.

Trump argues that tariffs will bring back industrialization to America.

He believes that other nations have become more rich and powerful at America’s expense, and that foreign countries, whether friend or foe, have “looted,” “pillaged,” “raped,” and “plundered” the beautiful country.

The steep tariffs will encourage US consumers to buy more local-made goods and major companies to build their factories in the country (at least that’s what Trump hopes).

In this session, financial experts Hann Liew and Sani Hamid discuss the impacts of Trump’s tariffs and why it is the DUMBEST trade war in history.

Some banks, like RHB, have even offered dividends as high as 7% in certain years.

Petronas has confirmed that it will layoff employees to ensure long term survival.

The O&G giant announced on Feb 7 that it currently has too many workers and needs to undertake a workforce restructuring.

“If we don’t do it now, there’ll be no Petronas in 10 years,” its CEO said.

Starting the second half of 2025, employees who are no longer needed will be retrenched rightsized. Petronas has promised that those affected will receive “appropriate assistance.”

According to its CEO, the company currently has 52,000 employees, but 16,000 are considered “Enablers,” which the group aims to reduce.

In a separate story, EPF dividends for 2024 are expected to exceed 5.80%, possibly even higher.

If this is realized, it will be the highest payout in the past three years. Dividends are typically backdated and announced in March, so we can expect EPF’s 2024 rates to be revealed early next month.

In this session, financial experts Hann Liew and Sani Hamid discuss job security and EPF’s projected dividends.

After signing the documents on Monday (7 Oct), PM Anwar expressed optimism for next year’s budget, noting that it will strengthen the local economy and equalize income distribution.

While the details have yet to be announced, Budget 2025 will set the tone for Malaysia and the rakyat for the rest of the year.

In 2024, our country has made significant progress by promoting foreign investment, posting strong GDP and trade numbers, and receiving an upgrade in rating from JP Morgan.

Still, there are three areas which we need to urgently address in order to transition Malaysia into a first world country.

With fresh grads earning RM3,000 per month, it will take them 8 years to save up for a downpayment for a house.

And that’s before other costs.

This is why the younger generation can no longer afford a home.

We’re back with Certified Financial Planners Hann and Sani. This session, as the title suggests, mainly focuses on investing in 2024. The speakers shared what sort of strategies we as investors could employ to maximize profits and insights on how next year will be for the markets.

We also talked about a more pressing matter: the new 10% sales tax, which will be imposed on Low-Value Goods below RM500 starting January 1, 2024.

  • Will the new 10% sales tax make local goods more competitive?
  • How likely is this new policy to increased prices of online goods?
  • Why are the US Federal Reserve’s decisions crucial for global markets?
  • What is the investing outlook for 2024?
  • How can we maximize profits next year?
  • What assets/industries are likely to perform?

Quick facts:

i) In December, the government announced a 10% sales tax to be imposed on low-value goods costing below RM500.

This tax is only applicable to online purchases, and local products will not be affected.

More info: https://www.instagram.com/p/C0-wtyQpQIK/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

ii) The Federal Reserve has recently kept interest rates steady in its final FOMC meeting. In fact, the committee is looking to reduce them earlier than expected next year.

The result of this was a massive jump in the markets. The S&P, in the past 7 days rallied 3.16%, while back at home, the FBMKLCI recovered 1.50%.

In this episode, Certified Financial Planners Hann and Sani share insights on Bitcoin's impressive 125% gain on a year-to-date basis and crypto as an investment class. The second half of the session covers EPF's projected payout for 2023, which experts estimate should range between 5.4-5.7%.

  • What makes Bitcoin unique compared to traditional asset classes?
  • Why is Bitcoin up 125% since January? What makes the asset so volatile?
  • How can we position ourselves in a volatile asset to maximize returns and minimize losses?
  • EPF is expected to pay 5.4-5.7% this year - will it be higher?
  • What is EPF's investment strategy, and should we follow it?

Quick facts:

i) Bitcoin has made quite an impressive run this year. The asset rallied from $16,500 to $38,400, up 128% on a year-to-date basis. It has vastly outperformed other asset classes, such as the S&P (up almost 20% within a similar timeframe), gold (up 12%), and our Malaysian market (down 2.29%).

ii) The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) posted a 33% jump in investment income for the first 9 months of 2023, to RM47.86 billion from RM36.04 billion the same period last year.

For the 3rd quarter (Q3 2023), the total investment income rose to RM14.67 billion, which was RM2.38 billion higher compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

In this episode, financial experts Hann and Sani break down Budget 2024 and its potential impacts (both positive and negative) to the rakyat. We also discuss the ringgit’s road to RM5.00 and assets to consider with geopolitical tensions on the rise.

  • Budget 2024 represents Anwar’s promise to aid lower-income groups, but does it stay true to its proposal?
  • How did the local market and the ringgit react to Budget 2024?
  • Will the removal of price ceilings on chicken and eggs trigger a surge in prices?
  • Will the SST increase to 8% force businesses to raise prices?
  • Is removing diesel subsidies a good move for the economy?
  • The ringgit is now at its lowest level since the Asian Financial Crisis. Why is this happening?

In this episode, we’re back with financial experts Hann Liew and Sani Hamid. Our discussion centered upon the recent wage report released by the Department of Statistics, which highlights the alarming wealth gap between the rich and the poor. We also addressed the question of whether Malaysians are underpaid, and the possible solutions that can be implemented in order to resolve this crisis. Finally, we’ll talked about investing in general – what details that newbies should look out for and how to plan their personal finance journey.Quick facts:* The recent quarterly wage report released by the Department of Statistics showed that the median salary of formal employees increased from RM2,400 to RM2,600 y-o-y in March, representing an 8.3% y-o-y increase. * When tabulated into a horizontal bar chart, we can see that 82% of employees earn less than RM5,000 per month, and a staggering 35% of the population has a salary of less than RM2,000 per month. * The distribution of wealth decreases exponentially as the salary figure increases, but it abruptly skews towards the rich (ie. those earning more than RM15,000 per month). This shows just how wide the wealth gap is between the rich and the poor.

  • How does the ringgit’s decline affect citizens, apart from seeing import prices go up?
  • What are the reasons for the ringgit's decline? Why has it experienced such a significant drop not only against the US dollar but also against other major currencies?
  • Many people are attributing the ringgit’s weakness to the lack of action from Bank Negara Malaysia. What measures could BNM undertake in this situation?
  • Raising the OPR by a fair margin in order to “catch up” with other central banks and strengthen the ringgit is definitely something to consider. But wouldn't such OPR hikes further burden citizens, as what we are currently witnessing?
  • BNM recently announced its intention to intervene in the currency market to halt the devaluation of the ringgit. How effective is this approach? Is it possible for the ringgit to strengthen and reach the RM4.44 range?

~~~~~~~~~~~~
In this episode, we are back with Hann Liew, the founder of RinggitPlus, and Economist Sani Hamid.
Our conversation focused on the current declining ringgit, which has fallen almost 6% against the US dollar and over 11% against the pound sterling on a year-to-date basis.
Comparisons to our Southeast Asian counterparts show that our ringgit hasn't fared well either. According to a recent report by MIDF, the ringgit stands as the second-worst-performing currency in Asia, trailing only behind the Japanese yen.
The depreciation has undeniably caused significant concern among Malaysians.
This session will address these worries and shed light on the past, present, and future trajectory of the ringgit.
In our latest episode, we had the privilege of hosting esteemed guests Hann Liew, the founder of RinggitPlus, and Economist Sani Hamid.Our discussion spanned across various significant subjects, encompassing the dire state of EPF savings and potential strategies to enhance the retirement funds of Malaysians.
We also delved into the recent OPR hike by BNM, as well as expert opinions on ASB and ASM.
  • Should the retirement age be raised to increase the alarmingly low EPF savings of Malaysians?
  • Would raising the mandatory EPF contributions from employers work?
  • Why did Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) hike the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) by 25 basis points? Are more rate hikes are expected?
  • ASB and ASM – are they still a good form of investment?
Quick facts:
  1. The state of EPF savings for Malaysians is alarming. As of December last year, PM Anwar revealed that only 19% of EPF members had reached the basic savings target of RM240,000 to retire by 55. Even this amount wouldn’t be enough to retire in our opinion, as it will only give retirees RM1,000 per month to survive.
  2. Bank Negara Malaysia surprised the markets by raising the OPR by 25 basis points on May 3. The increase brought the interest rate back to the pre-pandemic level of 3.0%.
  3. Amanah Saham Malaysia (ASM) and Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) are unit trust funds managed by Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ANSB). These funds have gained recognition for consistently providing good dividends, averaging 6.92% for ASB and 5.68% for ASM over the past 11 years. However, the dividend rates have recently shown a decline.
On 6th March 2022, Anton Nell tweeted that he and his colleague Andre Conje will be taking a break from crypto:
https://twitter.com/AntonNellCrypto/status/1500405473337565191
Who are they, you might ask?
Well, Andre and Anton helped to develop numerous DeFi projects like Fantom (FTM), Keeper Network, Yearn Finance, etc.
Widely considered as the 'godfather' of DeFi, Andre's departure created mass panic within the FTM community. Everyone scrambled. The price of FTM dumped 30% in a matter of hours.
Is this a massive rug-pull? And what's the future like for FTM right now?
In this raw, uncut session, DeFi Jedis and crypto enthusiasts debate about FTM and more.
In the third episode, we featured Jihan (@lakarumbi), Arif Rafhan (@ArifRafhanDraw) and Amir (@DoDaDoodle).
Arif Rafhan Othman is a visual artist, both in traditional and digital platforms. His forte includes book illustrations, comics, concept art, sculptures, and murals. You can see his works at public places and offices commissioned by municipals and corporates – Eco World, DBKL, Coke, Expedia, Samsung, etc. His books and comics have been published in Malaysia, Singapore, and as far as the United States. He contributed to Gila-Gila and works with Dato Lat. Arif provides his visual skills for animation series and films both locally and overseas. This includes concept art, character designs, storyboarding and animations. His art is mostly centered around Malaysia, with tons of local references and themes.
Amir Sabri is a doodle artist. He began as early as 2011, doodling to find a way to himself. “Doodling turns out to be the magical key for me to express my feelings, my doubts, and the best channel for me to spill everything out of my heart.” – Amir. His artwork is known to radiate positivity and tranquility amid the countless squiggles, lines, and curves. It has been a good source of side income for him for almost 10 years. Recently (2021), he quit his job in architecture to jump into the doodle world whole heartedly. Amir is the perfect example of an artist who pursues passion, not perfection.
Profile: https://twitter.com/DoDaDoodle
Jihan is an abstract artist with audio visuals. Her works touch on the fragility of life, happiness, anger, sadness, and death. Prior to the pandemic, she was a musician relying heavily on live performances as her main source of income. With Covid distorting her livelihood, she had no earnings for over a year. She ventured into the NFT space out of curiosity and immediately dominated. Her works are on multiple platforms: Teia, Hic Et Nunc, OBJKT, Versum, Rarible and Pentas. In this second episode, we featured Asmoe (@asmoeroc), Dr. Jasma (@jasma_jamaludin) and Azyan (@AzyanDraws).
Asmoe. A promising young Graffiti Artist who defines his own identity by utilizing graffiti letters as the daredevil weaponry on scene. Born in Malacca & raised in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, he started to splash the walls with colours since 2011. Ever since then, Asmoe has been exploring and experimenting with multiple styles and elements which are handsomely infused into his pieces. It is an attempt to exquisitely discover his perspective & individual personality in the game. Over the years, his evolved pieces & sketches have been featured in numerous blogs, media pages, and interviews worldwide.
Profile: https://www.instagram.com/asmoeroc/
Dr Jasma binti Jamaludin was born in 1994 and graduated from SEGI University with a degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). She became interested in art during her early days as a medical student. Working as a doctor, she felt death, pain, and suffering through her patients. It is an onerous duty. The only way out for her it seems, is to paint experiences and expressions on canvas. Dancing and whirling with vibrant but surreal colours, her abstract artwork is not bound by her own imagination. It encapsulates the very essence of life and death itself.
Profile: https://www.instagram.com/artby.jasma/
Azyan is a self-taught digital illustrator specializing in the feminine genre of illustration. Born in 1990, Selangor, she graduated from UiTM with a Masters in Architecture in 2017. Azyan prioritizes softness and elegance is her artworks, but do not assume that she is limited to peaceful/beautiful sceneries. Some of her works address the struggles of society: depicting a mother’s ever-lasting love to a child, protecting women with their rights, etc. Azyan managed to get recognition from Mstar, SelangorFM, and won multiples awards in various platforms.
In this first episode, we featured Nurina (@NurinaNorman), Vivian (@NiuniusGallery), and Sha (@Imagishary).
Nurina is from Johore, Malaysia. She is an abstract artist whose work is deeply rooted in the material curiosities and playfulness of acrylic paint. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Multimedia University Malaysia and is a mother of four. She paints using acrylics on canvas, a method she mastered with her own techniques. She believes that abstract art allows her to express emotions in the form of colours, and everyone has a different perspective of what art is.
Vivian is from Bentong, Pahang. She has a Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Interior Architecture and Design from Nottingham Trent University UK. Sha is bubbly and cheerful at heart. She is a professional in marketing and has helped many artists publish and/or market their works on Pentas. She is a self-taught artist. Her love for arts began since she was young. “I always consider drawing or producing art as an escape from the hustle of life. My style of art is incorporated with nature and floral. Apart from producing fine arts my favorite kind of artwork is children's artwork which I consider the most relaxing piece of art I have ever produced. Why do we make art? Must we have a cause? If so, how do we price our works? What is the 'fair value'?
In one of our most legendary sessions, we discussed about NFTs and sustainability. Artwork itself sometimes isn't enough, and we have to ensure that we can sustain without burning out. "Go for the long run", basically.
The session had over 150 listeners at its peak. Hosted by Sha (@Imagishary) and Shinji (@FuturistsMY), with featured speakers Amir (@AmirRozali), Abudullah (@AfricGuild), Faiz (@TigerPunksMY) and Asyraf (@BicaraKrypto), this is a session you wouldn't want to miss.
(14:12) Shinji shares the origins of 'Tanah Tumpahnya NFTku'
(17:21) Asyraf talks about his Youtube channel
What is money? How do we define it? Why is the blockchain important? We tackle these questions and MORE in this lounge session. Apart from being a settlement layer which cannot be disputed, we talked about the blockchain, which offers a permanent ledger that records all transactions and executions. Another interesting thought we discussed is that money is but a social construct. It has value because the governments give it value. So, is it theoretically possible to have DOGE to be the next currency if everyone were to accept it socially?
We highly recommend you to listen through the entire session. We had a team member (Harith, @harithk17) from Etherscan, BSCScan, etc to join us. We also had Nimu from @CoolnKultured to share his thoughts.
Here are a few timestamps:
(00:00) Introduction
(05:48) Bitcoin is intangible. It has no company, therefore it cannot produce any cash flow, revenue or dividends. It is a scam. Or is it?
(09:48) What is money?
(15:07) If everyone decided to stop using Bitcoin, will Bitcoin be obsolete?
(16:10) Is it possible for another cryptocurrency to overtake Bitcoin?
(19:15) Bitcoin mining consumes so much energy. It is extremely harmful to the environment.
(25:34) Proof of work: Why Bitcoin consumes so much energy.
(33:15) What is the Byzantine General's Problem? How does Bitcoin tackle this issue?
(37:10) Bitcoin is too volatile. It is not a safe asset to invest in.
(47:42) Why NFTs?
(60:44) "Right Click Save As, and I've stolen your NFT." XD
(73:43) The Blockchain Technology is just a fancy term for a Ponzi Scheme of gargantuan proportions.
(86:21) If majority of the people starts to accept DOGE, would it be a legal currency?
(92:35) Is Bitcoin really decentralized? What of the early adopters?
(102:48) What happens if Ethereum overtakes Bitcoin?
(106:02) Bitcoin's maximum supply is 21 million. Is this true? What is the true circulating supply of Bitcoin?
(115:57) Bitcoin is not undergoing any development now. True or False?
(121:15) Harith's socials and information
(122:25) Nimu (CoolnKultured)'s socials and information
Let's face it: Ethereum, second to Bitcoin, has tons of competitors which are looking to dethrone its rightful place. Charles Hoskinson, a previous co-founder of Ethereum, went on to develop Cardano (ADA), which is now one of the top blockchain networks in the cryptocurrency market. Let's not forget about Solana (SOL), its transactions per second can reach to a cap of about 400,000. Other honorable mentions include Polkadot (DOT) and Polygon (MATIC)
This is the session where we discuss about the blockchain wars. How do each of these blockchain networks tackle the blockchain trilemma (decentralization, security, scalability)? We also talked about the environmental concerns regarding proof of work (mining). Featured speakers within this session: Nando (@Nei_var), Raffiq (@Summerwatchorg), Wirshad (@TheShadspeare) and Harith (@harithk17).
Here are a few timestamps:
(00:00) Introduction
(00:42) Weekly news update (link to slides attached below)
(07:43) What is proof of work? Why is it so controversial?
(14:57) What is Ethereum?
(22:32) How is Cardano (ADA) different from Ethereum?
(32:53) What are smart contracts?
(44:13) Solana (SOL), why is it so interesting?
(51:54) Solana's decetralization. Questionable?
(60:12) Polygon (MATIC), a brief discussion on layer 1 and layer 2 blockchains.
(70:05) ETH2.0, what is the future for Ethereum?
Could an artist solely focus on their own works? How do we shill and step up in Twitter spaces?
Let's be honest, the NFT marketplace is extremely competitive. Many talented artists out there are currently struggling on sales and marketing. In this session, we talked about a few strategies, including advertising, passion, consistency and niches. Featured artists include: @AzyanDraws (host), @FuturistsMY (co-host), @Tanah_io, @Sampahkings and @Pamiizmail. Here are a few of the timestamps:
(24:10) The NFT marketplace is a battleground. What strategies do you have in your arsenal? Do you consider other artists as well?
(38:44) How does one shill art?
(68:18) We're currently seeing more creators than collectors, what are your thoughts?
(74:28) Stepping up in Twitter space is difficult. Are there any tips to this?
(88:05) When an artist looks at their own artworks which fail to sell, it is easier to just give up and go back to what they’re comfortable in doing. But how do we push ourselves forward to give it another try?
(106:55) How do we find a niche in the markets?
(119:55) How would you explain NFTs and the blockchain to a newcomer? How do we encourage them to enter this space?
