God chose you for a purpose!  Do you believe that?  It can be hard to see how and why God chose you, and for what purpose, but Genesis 5 helps you to see God’s greater plan and purpose for your life.

But you might say, “Genesis 5 is a genealogy of ancient people!  How does that tell me about how I was chosen?” Continue listening to find out!

**correction: one passages I quoted is from Revelations 7:9 (written by John), not from John 7:9.

Having a favourite is normal.  We all have preferences, and they tend to lean towards people with the right attitude: authentic, truthful, kind, and sincere.

Now while God doesn’t choose favorites, he clearly preferred one brother’s attitude and actions over the other - Abel's over Cain's.

If pleasing God matters to us, and it should, you need to find out what attitudes and actions God is looking for.   Find out exactly what attributes and attitudes God is looking in in this verse by verse study of Genesis 4!

Adam and Eve were living in paradise in the Garden of Eden with God.  Just as Revelations speaks of heaven coming to earth, God was living on earth with mankind and there was no sin, sickness, and death.

But then something happened, putting an end to life in paradise, and resulting in God punishing Adam and Eve.  Take a listen to find out why!

God reveals himself to us through the Bible.  So what has God told us about himself?  Well to discover the answer, we have to go back to the beginning.  To the book of Genesis.
Genesis is the foundation on which we can understand the rest of the Bible.  In fact, the Bible would be incomplete and even possibly incomprehensible without the book of Genesis.  It sets the stage for the rest of the book: Who God is, what he wants, and what he plans to do.  It also informs us about who we are and what we are meant to be.  Find out the important lessons from Genesis 1!

Paul wrote the letter to the Romans in case he was never able to visit them. He wanted them to have the entire gospel he preached in case he never got to preach it in person.

But even though Paul’s plans for his mission trip got interrupted, he didn’t let that stop him from continuing his mission. Even though Paul ended up going to Rome in chains, Paul demonstrated obedience in faith – a deep trust in God and obedience to God’s command to serve one another and share the gospel. He demonstrated the kind of faith and obedience God is calling all of us to follow – obedience no matter the circumstances, even when it seems impossible.

This is the conclusion to this study of Romans. I hope it has blessed you as it has blessed me! Join me on November 2, 2022 for Season 2 , in which we begin a verse by verse study of the book of Genesis!

The Bible tells us that God blesses those who bless others, meaning that we are blessed so that we can bless others.  What does this look like? According to Romans 15, it means living for others and not for yourself.
But the common message seems to be that we should live to please ourselves and not worry about pleasing others.  The premise of this view is that we shouldn’t put others’ wishes, happiness, and dreams ahead of our own.  We come first.  Our own happiness should take priority.
In this episode, find out what it means to be a blessing to others, and how exactly we can live out our faith in this way.

Everyone agrees that we shouldn’t judge others.  You might say that it is a moral standard.  But what does the Bible say about judging others?  Can we judge others according to the Bible?  What reasons does the Bible give us for why we should or shouldn’t judge others?

Romans 14, Paul talks about Christians judging other Christians.  This is not about judging others in general, but a very specific kind of being judgmental.

Romans 12 is all about how to live a Christian life.  The life of a Christian is not an easy one, but the benefits of choosing to follow Jesus are far greater than any alternative, and it involves far more than a heavenly destination.

Christians are called to, first, love God; and second, love others.  This is the true calling of the Christian life.  This is the life that glorifies God and the life that provides the most fulfillment.

In today's podcast, I will discuss 10 Lessons on How to Live a Christian Life.

Has God rejected his own people, the nation of Israel? As we learned in Romans 9, Israel's rejection was both part of God's plan and Israel's choosing.  Does this mean Israel's fate is sealed?

Paul argues that God has not forgotten Israel at all!  In Romans 11, Paul offers evidence as to why he believes this, as well as hope for Israel to be included in the New Covenant some day!

The Bible tells us that God's way of making agreements, forming relationships with mankind, is through covenants.  After 6 covenants in the Old Testament, God made his final New Covenant with us through Jesus Christ.  But why not just start with Jesus?  What was God's purpose in the 6 old covenants with his people in the past?  And has God broken those past covenants with his chosen people?

In these next 3 podcast episode, we will be covering Romans 9-11, in which Paul is seemingly changing subjects, directing his message to the Jews.  However, Paul is not changing the subject at all!  These passages are part of how Paul explains and demonstrates how God remains faithful and how God saves.

In Romans 9, Paul grieves over how Israel has rejected their Messiah, but despite this rejection, Paul explains how God has kept his promise with his chosen people.

In Romans 8, Paul tells us what he means by living in the Spirit.  He tells us that those who can enjoy the benefits of being called children of God are those who turn away from a life of obedience to the flesh, and turn to a life of obedience to the Holy Spirit.  God wants the Spirit to rule over our flesh, rather than allow our flesh to rule over the Spirit.  But how do we live in the Spirit?  Listen to find out!

In Romans 7 Paul further discusses the law and sin, and breaks these issues down into three sections:

  • First, he explains more completely how we are no longer under rule of the law.
  • Second, Paul describes how the law is good and necessary in revealing our sin.
  • And third, he discusses the struggle we continue to have with sin, and tells us the only way we can overcome it.

Find out how we can overcome sin, even in this life!

In Romans 6, Paul argues that we should not keep on sinning in order to receive God's grace. And not only that, but that the power that sin once had over us is broken by Jesus' death on the cross. He says that just because God's grace doesn't run out, it doesn't mean that the Christian should live a life of sin, since God will always overcome greater sin with greater grace.

In this chapter, Paul explains why we should not even tolerate the occasional sin, but rather despise all sin. Paul also gives us some principles on how we can overcome sin and experience the freedom that Jesus came to give us.

Up until this point in the book of Romans, Paul has convinced us that the only way of salvation is to be justified by grace through faith.  Now, in the first half of Romans 5, he will tell us what the practical benefits of being justified are, explaining that salvation is more than an interesting idea that involves the afterlife!

In the second half of Romans 5, Paul describes the spread of sin through the human race  because of  the "work" of Adam, and contrasts this work with the work of Jesus.  This is another really great chapter that is so foundational to understanding the truth of gospel!

God has a plan to make us right with him.  That plan was made possible through the death and resurrection of Jesus, and we can receive this free gift of salvation through faith in him.
But what exactly does faith means?  What kind of faith should be have and what specifically do we need to have faith in, in order to receive God's gift of salvation?

Paul uses Abraham as an example for us, and shows us that God's way of salvation has always been the same: through FAITH.

We all get off track at times and lose sight of what matters most.  In these times, it's good to go back to the beginning, to our roots, and find our focus.  Are you a Christian but notice that your gaze is slipping?  Could your walk with God be closer? Have you not yet encountered Jesus?  Have you wondered how to have a relationship with God?  This podcast episode is for you!

Paul begins today's passage with these two words: "But now", which is such a wonderful transition from the judgment of Romans 3:20 to the justification of Romans 3:21.  "But now" lets us know that something new is about to happen, and Paul goes into careful detail to unravel how we can have intimacy with God.

Since the time of Adam and Eve, people have been trying to justify themselves by obeying God's laws and performing good works.  But its just not enough!  But why did God give us his laws and standard to live by, if we're only going to fail?

The law silences every critic and demonstrates that the entire world is guilty before God.  Knowing that we can't be perfect, and realizing that only God can, humbles us and makes us rely on him.

I think we can all agree that there are some pretty 'good' people in the world?  But can people be good enough to deserve God's kindness?  Does God owe us his favor because we've been good enough?

In Romans 2:1-16, Paul builds his argument that there aren't any good people, at least not by God's standard  - and his standard is the only standard that matters.

We might not deserve God's kindness - in fact we deserve quite the opposite - but God LAVISHES us with it anyway!

** Warning: the Bible passage I read in this episode might not be appropriate for children.

In this episode, we will read and discuss Romans 1:18-32 and try to answer the following questions:

  • Is morality subjective? Is it simply left up to the individual to decide right from wrong?
  • Do we all, by nature, have a moral compass?
  • Has God revealed himself to all mankind?
  • Is God's judgment fair, or does it contradict his goodness?
  • Can anyone be too far gone for God?

Paul touches on some tough issues in this chapter, and some of these issues may be hard to grapple with. I personally find comfort in knowing there is something and Someone bigger than myself, and that Someone is all-powerful, all-knowing, good, kind, and just. It might be difficult to understand his ways, but without him there would be utter chaos and a world without purpose and hope.

Paul packs so much into just one chapter!  Every word written by Paul is carefully chosen in order to convey the richness of God's gospel message.  In this episode, we will examine Romans 1:8-17, verse by verse, in order to uncover all that Paul intended for us to know.
In this passage, Paul discusses three main points:

1.  We are meant to live in community with other Christians, to encourage and be encouraged.
2.  We are all called to be bold for Christ and share our faith with the people around us.
3.  We can only be made right with God by having faith in his Son, Jesus Christ.
