The Do What Is Necessary Podcast: Recent Episodes

Andrew Moon

Let's be honest: building a company from nothing is incredibly hard. It has been for me. I started my entrepreneurial journey at age 8. Yep, you read that right....8! Since then, I've started, run and sold multiple businesses with no partners and no funding. All my life I've had to build something from nothing, and that's what I've gotten really great at - tenacious, creative and extremely smart strategy coupled with hard work. Welcome to The Do What Is Necessary podcast—I’m your host, Andrew Moon.

Listen in as I share all the mistakes I’ve made and, more importantly, what I’ve learned from them, with no fluff, and no rose-colored glasses. The Do What Is Necessary Podcast is a show where we cut through the toxic hustle and grind mindset and dig into what it actually takes to start and grow a “calm business”. Calm is family first. Calm is more independence. Calm is sustainable practices for the long term. Calm is joyful. Running a calm company is a choice.

I’ll be giving unfiltered advice every week, 10 minutes per episode each. I want you to walk away from this podcast with the mindset and tools you need to be successful.

This podcast is for entrepreneurs, side hustlers, and busy professionals with a short attention span (like me)—you’ll get quick-hitting, actionable information in every single episode. If you give me your time, I promise it won't be wasted. Now let's get to work!

🎬 This week's episode was inspired by a call I was on this week. I was talking with a good friend who sold his IT business like me. He started a new company, but is finding himself TRAPPED....AGAIN!!!! His new business has the same choke hold that his IT business had on him. That was one of biggest reasons he sold it. Now he doesn't know what to do.****

*He's working nearly 7 days a week with staff now in 5-6 time zones. He's crushed by the weight of managing all of this NOW while raising 3 kids.*

*If any of this sounds familiar: please know that you have a CHOICE. Break free from the choke hold by taking control. The flip side is a super scary place!!!!*

WHO IS ANDREW MOON, aka the Orange Nomad 🍊 ⏬❓

I’m a lifelong entrepreneur who has launched and run several successful businesses of my own since age 8. After running a successful technology company (aka #MSP) of my own for 10 years, which I sold in 2014, I founded Orange Nomad to help MSPs, small businesses and entrepreneurs bridge the gap between strategy and execution.

I love helping the ’underdog.’ I’ve built my business from nothing and know how hard it can be to start and grow a business when you’ve got no money, no help and the world on your shoulders. I help small businesses like ourselves: members of the Fortune 5,000,000. With the Fortune 5,000,000 we have a real shot at making a real impact. That's more satisfying work. I’m proud to help my clients learn how to build a "calm company". Calm is family first. Calm is more independence. Calm is sustainable practices for the long term. Calm is joyful. Running a calm company is a choice.

Overstimulation is the cause of our inability to focus on anything significant or challenging in our lives.

We'd rather sleep in our beds and surf through social media than accomplish things we're enthusiastic about.

Alternatively, we may spend the entire day playing video games till our eyes dry up.

We do this because we want to experience the rush of discovery that comes with discovering something new and controversial.

Unfortunately, not handling the hard stuff of running your business, like marketing for instance, will eventually kill your business.

Let me explain more, and some practical steps on how to be more aware of it. --> https://my.orangenomad.com/podcast

Although not everyone is born with the ability to sell, it is necessary to stay in business.

It is true that some people have a natural ability to sell.

Others may stand on the sidelines in astonishment as a naturally gifted salesman turns a perfectly ordinary product into a must-have for a potential buyer. (think Steve Jobs)

Natural selling ability can elicit strong feelings, including the envy button.

I used to think "selling" was a dirty word, but I have since embraced this necessary skill and have actually learned to love it. On this episode, I share what I did to change. --> https://my.orangenomad.com/podcast

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” – Thomas A. EdisonI just want to remind you. There's no shortcut. There's no easy button. There's no trick. There's no looking at somebody else and asking "How do they do it?" that I don't know. Well, you may not know it, but it's not a secret.

Any basic search engine, any book you read, listen to enough podcasts, you go to enough events. You'll learn it.

The secret of business success, and a lot of. It's just hard work. A lot of it is a learning as you go along and improvising, but the core tenants to business, as I talked to those of you who are trying to grow solo businesses, the smallest of small business owners is really simple.

On today's episode I talk all about the 5 basic tenants to make any business a success. Hope you enjoy!

For the last 8 years, I’ve been living a (relatively) simple life. At times, the complexity of my life grows, and I renew my commitment to living simply.

Living a simple life is about paring back, so that you have space to breathe.

It’s about doing with less, because you realize that having more and doing more doesn’t lead to happiness.

It’s about finding joys in the simple things, and being content with solitude, quiet, contemplation and savoring the moment.

I’ve learned some key lessons for living a simple life, and I thought I’d share a few with you.

When someone takes a vacation at your company, (yourself included) it should feel like they don't work there anymore. You should be encouraging them to go completely dark.

Turn their computer off, delete Outlook from their phone, don't check in.

Go away for real. Be gone. Off your grid.

The whole purpose of a vacation is to get away. To not only be somewhere else entirely, but to think about something else entirely. Work should not be on your mind. Period.

But the reality is that most entrepreneurs end up taking a "fakecation", if they take any time off at all.

When was the last time you actually got to disconnect? I mean for real?

Not for a weekend, but for weeks. When you didn't feel any guilt or urge to check in and check up on work.

Very few entrepreneurs can claim such a thing nowadays. That's a tragedy, and a recipe for burnout.

Fakecations put you on a leash - you're liable to be yanked back and pulled into work at any moment.

We all start our business with the idea that we'll be able to get the time off we need. That's supposed to be one of the key benefits. Time off isn't much of a benefit if you never get it. It becomes more like a crappy loan with terrible terms. Plus interest. And worries. Enough is enough.

Just because you own a business doesn't mean that your company should be entitled to ALL of your night's, weekends, or vacations. That's life time. True emergencies are an exception, but those should only happen once or twice a year max.

When your company acts like it owns all of yours (and your employee's time), this breeds a culture of neurotic exhaustion.

EVERYONE needs a chance to truly get away and reboot. If your employees are denied that, or you deny yourself that, you'll both end up tired and resentful.

Clearly, time off is necessary, but only if you can take it without preoccupying yourself with more work. So, how can you do that as the committed entrepreneur you are?

Listen to this podcast episode to find out what the definition of "fakecation" is, and why it's time to institute a No Fakecations Allowed policy -

As we are two years removed from the Great Lockdown, I have recently found myself struggling to get back into a state of Flow.  I've had some recent life changes, like buying a new (100 year old) house.  With moving to a new area and lots of remodeling projects, I've had a hard time being creative; especially when it comes to making content.  Here's how I'm tackling this hurdle.

Entrepreneurship is challenging to say the least. Some days it's just downright exhausting. For many entrepreneurs there. There comes a last straw breaking point. Where the conditions are so stressful and so overwhelming. That it just seems impossible to continue.

But for most others, the eventual loss of passion for entrepreneurship. Better known as burnout. Is something slower and more gradual. It's a creeping feeling that grows day after day. And eventually begins to affect your work performance.

In your daily life, you will experience the glow of shiny object syndrome today, tomorrow, or someday. You must first comprehend what it is, why it occurs, and how to deal with it.

When family or friends discuss how work is going, they frequently bring up the most recent news. They describe what is going on and how it affects them.

Unfortunately, many people's descriptions seem like they're suffering from shiny object syndrome (which I'll explain later). Their story reflects their intellectual and emotional fatigue.

Organizations and people (including you) are understandably looking for "it" in the form of ideas, technology, or processes to help them innovate and grow. They may, however, swiftly adopt a solution only to renounce it later.

This is referred to as "shiny object syndrome."

Let's have a look at what we've got. Put your glasses on!

When you're feeling worried and overwhelmed by life's apparently never-ending rotation of duties and responsibilities, the last thing you want to do is do less.

But, almost always, that's exactly what needs to happen. Similarly, if we can't keep our homes organized, it nearly always indicates we have too many things to try to keep in order, if we can't get through our days without feeling completely overwhelmed, it means we're trying to take on too much at once. Trying to cram too much into your schedule won't help you be more productive. It reduces your productivity.

On this episode, I break down why time mangement hacks don't work, and the ONE thing you need to manage each day.

The idea of having concrete, achievable goals seems to be deeply ingrained in our culture.

In the past, I’d set a goal or three for the year, and then sub-goals for each month. Then I’d figure out what action steps to take each week and each day, and try to focus my day on those steps.

Unfortunately, it never, ever works out this neatly. We all know this. You know you need to work on an action step, and you try to keep the end goal in mind to motivate yourself. But this action step might be something you dread, and so you procrastinate. You do other work, or you check email or Facebook, or you goof off.

And so your weekly goals and monthly goals get pushed back or side-tracked, and you get discouraged because you have no discipline. And goals are too hard to achieve. So now what? Well, you review your goals and reset them. You create a new set of sub-goals and action plans. You know where you’re going, because you have goals!

Of course, you don’t actually end up getting there. Sometimes you achieve the goal and then you feel amazing. But most of the time you don’t achieve them and you blame it on yourself.

Here’s the secret: the problem isn’t you, it’s the system! Goals as a system are set up for failure.

Today I break down my issues with goals, and a new mindset I'm learning to embrace.

How often have you heard someone refer to their company as their baby? Maybe you've done that yourself. I've had that same feeling myself and I've had that same viewpoint in the past with past businesses. Given the blood sweat in emotional tears that we pour into our businesses, it seems like a logical analogy, but there comes a time when we have to take a step back, and view our businesses in a different light.

The early stages of your business growth may require constant attention. When you first start out, it's just like having a kid. I remember when my son was born. I mean, if you're a parent, you understand this. They can't do anything for themselves. You have to do everything for them. But after a certain point of time, you should be able to relax a little bit and especially when it comes to sleep. I remember when my son was born, every two hours he either needed fed or changed.

But at some point he started sleeping through the night. And I think that we know this was probably like month four or month five, he started sleeping through the night. So at some point they grow up at some point they wipe their own butt. So it's the same mentality we need to take her with our businesses. And today I want to talk about three reasons why you should ditch that mentality that your business is "your baby".

Excuse my passion, but there are far too many wonderfully bright people who are content with their current situation, aka a job, because they are afraid to risk it all. Don't be the one that gets caught in the middle of success!

I have no ill will toward those who work. However, that should not be your sole focus and effort on a daily basis. You must have a side business, something you are enthusiastic about, and something you are growing for yourself.

Enough is enough with placing your entire destiny in the hands of others. Betting on oneself is the quickest road to success. Period! So, here are five methods to go about it...

Underdogs, by definition, finish second — a position no one likes to claim.  No one really wants to be in second place. But being the underdog is to me, I think it's a strategic advantage. And today I want to talk about why I think that's the case.

For many years, I mistakenly assumed that because I'd spent the majority of my professional life building companies, conducting sales meetings, and speaking engagements, I was an extrovert. I didn't understand why I needed full recovery days of silence after delivering training courses or a day full of meetings until I realized I was a true introvert trying to pass myself off as an extrovert.

Today, it's not uncommon for me to plan my leaving so that I don't get inundated with party invitations. To protect my energy, I've learned to set kind boundaries and not apologize for being myself. Nothing makes me happier than snuggling up with a blanket, reading, writing, or watching a TV show with my family. In fact, I've discovered that the more time I set aside for self-reflection, the more present and effective I can be in people-oriented events.

I wish I had learned this sooner.

As a culture, we've come to believe that when building a business bigger is always better. More revenue, more employees, more followers, more square feet, more locations. Those are the metrics that impress people, but can this relentless pursuit of more backfire?

Today I want to talk about why staying small is the next big thing for business, why I think it's time to rethink growth as the status quo, how social media has changed the way we think about success and the three questions you should ask yourself before working towards any goal.

4:09 - 3 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

We've gotten sidetracked somewhere along the route. Perhaps we don't understand how much our daily rituals, favorite devices and apps, and where we focus our attention have an impact on us. As my compulsive relationship with distractions reached a breaking point, I needed a way to hold up a mirror and reveal a new me.

We think we can multitask because it's normal. It's what we do every day - text and walk, Facebook/Insta and drive, email and surf while in meetings, check our phones while reading and studying. But with all this multitasking, are we actually learning to work more efficiently? On this week's show, we'll talk about my battle with this addiction to distraction, and how it nearly wrecked the life I am trying to create.

Who is in control of your fate? Is it possible that it's your devices? If you can't go more than a few minutes without checking your phone, or if you're prone to other addictions, you definitely want to check out this show.

The hustle started as a beacon for me when I was 8 years old.  Coming from humble beginnings, hustling meant trying to outwork and outsmart those who had more than I did.  But now, hustle has become synonymous with grinding 24/7 at the expense of health, relationships and legacy.

It's no surprise that individuals are working longer hours, sooner and later in the day, on weekends, and whenever they have free time. People are no longer able to complete tasks at work.  If you run a business, it's even worse because you wear so many hats that it becomes a never ending battle.

Worse, for many people these days, working long hours, being overly occupied, and sleeping little has become a badge of honor. Sustained tiredness is a sign of stupidity, not a badge of honor. Companies who push their employees into this deal are cooking up something stupid at the expense of their workers.

Many folks are ending up broken, wasted, and burned out with nothing to show for it.  And for what?

It's time we stop the hustlemania!!

We've all been there: you set out to start a business out of passion, and it soon turns into growth at all costs. Work takes precedence over everything else in your life, causing everything else to go by the wayside.

Suddenly, you're working 12, 14, 18 hours a day, responding to emails from home at all hours of the night, and battling the million to-dos going through your mind in order to get a few hours of sleep. You get your exercise by dashing between your desk and the printer, and you can't recall the last time you ate food that wasn't packaged.

"Work-life balance–what the heck is that?" you might wonder.

Stressful periods at work may be unavoidable, and while they may be bearable in the short term, they can lead to exhaustion and burnout if you don't take steps to keep the stress under control.

On this episode, I unpack the 2 biggest causes of this toxic mindset, and what I did to deal with my own bout of exhaustion and burnout.
