In the Great Commandment, we hear Jesus call us to not only love God but to also love our neighbors as ourselves. This podcast is about the “as ourselves” part, as we learn what it means to care for ourselves in a holistic way that opens our spirits to more fully care for all of creation.

For Christmas I look towards the Magnificat as a message of self- care. We find a message of nurture in the lead up to Christ’s birth and comfort in his birth. While a message of action we also see care. Let us encounter the manger and our lives with the same spirit.

This week I reflect on Psalm 126 and how our sorrow (tears) can be instrumental in the joy that we experience through God. The pain and heartache are not mitigated, but God moves in as a presence of comfort, sparking the joy of the work God can and will do.

Monday Meditation
Join me as I reflect during this first week of Advent on Psalm 80. We enter this season, looking for God's restoration of our lives. Though where do we look? Do we look towards a future judgment to save us from this place, or do we allow God's call and promise to restore the image of God we have been created in?

Affirmations can be a helpful tool in our self-care kit. While not a way to ignore the negative happening around or within us, they can help reorient ourselves back on track as we process emotions and feelings.
In this episode, Andrew unpacks a little bit deeper into how these affirmations can be beneficial, as we develop this embedded practice of self-care. He talks about some affirmations he has heard about from others or used himself. And he talks about ways we can develop affirmations that can help us as we live out our faith and vocation.
Thank you to everyone who helped with their input on this episode, and don't forget to help with next week's episode.
Question for the next episode:
What is a community group or support system that helps in your practice of self-care?

Boundaries play a big role in how we practice self-care. They create space and opportunity for us to do so. However, they do not just appear. Sometimes they take intentional work and lessons learned. Sometimes we need to be form and others times we need a soft handed approach. Sometimes they are done to mend relationships and other times they are done to keep relationships healthy. What kind of boundaries do you set for your self care?
In our next episode we will talk about affirmations. What is an affirmation you use in your life?

We all have bad days (it is an unfortunate fact of life). However, a good sense of self-care knows what we inherently need when our mental state is at its worst. Yes, it takes training and understanding to get there, but it is important to know and understand how we can respond in tough situations when we are drained, tired, or on edge.
In this episode, we look over what I call “go-to rituals” for self-care. That is where do we go when we have had a tough day? What can we do to begin to get ourselves in a better mental and emotional state as we know the need might be there to bounce back the next day?
Let me know what your rituals are, and don’t forget to help out with next week’s podcast topic:
What is a self-care boundary you maintain in your life?

Weekends are crucial for people who work 9-5 jobs. We need that time to escape from the rigors of work and do things that fill our spirits in different ways.
In this light, whether you work a 9-5 job or a week of graveyard shifts, it is important to keep your day off sacred. With all the things happening in life and vocation we have to balance what happens between them.
In our job/vocation/career (however you wish to label it), we put in most of our effort. However, are we blocking off time away from our place of employment to do those others things we love or need to do in our lives?
In this episode I explore the importance of a day off each week, and why it is needed. We must have lives outside of our jobs, not just to accomplish things around the house, but to do things that have absolutely no relation to work whatsoever.
We also look at what other folks are doing on their days off as we go around the community. It might be a good book or cleaning the house, but what keeps us present when we are at work? What is the rest we take from something that occupies a good portion of our day?
Help out with next week’s episode! Our question is:
What is your go-to self-care ritual when you are having a bad day? (No judgment here)

The difference between mental health and mental illness is something that Jamie focuses on, and in this episode we take a journey with Jamie to understand this difference. We hear about Jamie's journey and what it has looked for her to address her own mental illness, and how she has sought to be a central figure for helping persons understand more deeply about how to address mental illness, but also to care for their own mental health ( as a generalized way of caring for themselves. Jamie brings her experience of teaching and practicing sports psychology at the collegiate level to help us understand how we can take mental health and mental illness seriously. She notes how it begins with education, and continues as we never try to fix others problems but help them to recognize they have support in the midst of their struggles. Andy Wells is the author of "Tried to Be Straight: Options for Gay Christians." He holds a Master of Arts in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. Andy’s education, coupled with his life experience struggling to reconcile his faith and sexuality, lend credibility to his writing. Andy’s passion for the topics of sexuality and faith come from his struggle with self-acceptance. He knows the frustration of living as a secretly gay man and a publicly born-again Christian. Finding a solution that works without having to abandon one’s faith is Andy’s desire in helping others facing the same dilemma. Andy and I talk about what self-worth and what it has looked like throughout his journey. Thomas James is a pastor in Northern Virginia, and has been working in some church/ministry capacity for almost 20 years. Over this time, he has tried to always practice good manners of self-care. However, like many of us the pandemic made it much more difficult to do so. Thomas and I begin our conversation talking about why the pandemic hit him so hard. Then we talk about Thomas need for some extended renewal leave, and the process he went through with the church he serves to ensure that he could have the time and space needed to have this time of renewal. Thomas took off 3 months. Hear all the things Thomas did during this time, and his difference in understanding between a sabbatical and renewal leave and why this differentiation was important for him. Thomas offers a perspective of how we can and should view opportunities of extended leave, and how we can have conversations with those around us in making those decisions to ensure that these times away from vocation are effective in what they can accomplish. http://fb.com/ThomasGJames (Thomas's Facebook page) https://twitter.com/ThomasGJames (@ThomasGJames on Twitter) https://wsumc.com (Thomas's Church’s Website) Don't forget to join our Active Faith Community on Facebook to share your journey and encourage and support others in their active journeys as well. https://www.facebook.com/groups/999882660818141 (Active Faith Facebook Community) Find us @activefaithpod on Facebook and Instagram Support me and this podcast on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/runninrev (https://www.patreon.com/runninrev) Connect with Andrew: https://linktr.ee/runninrev (https://linktr.ee/runninrev) Background Music from Yevhen Lokhmatov, 'Race For Glory' http://www.melodyloops.com/tracks/race-for-glory/ (www.melodyloops.com/tracks/race-for-glory/) Granted permission to use this Music by Melody Loops and its licensees, including Andrew Ware.

Rev. Beth Anderson joins to talk about her recent renewal leave and what it means to take extended times of leave. We unpack how these things can be refreshing and help us to reflect on how we can care for ourselves better once we return. Beth Anderson is a United Methodist Pastor in her 17th year of ministry serving our awesome God with the amazing people of Courthouse Community UMC. She has two incredible teenagers named Grace (15) and Sophia (14) and the sweetest dog ever named Joan. Beth's passion is helping people know their worth and discover their purpose. Too many people do not know that God loves them and there is nothing they can do about it-- she wants to change that. God's grace is real and hope is always possible. She's learning every day how to more fully love God, love others, and love herself. Kori joins and talks about her journey in caring for herself and what it has meant at various points in her life and ministry. Now she uses her journey to help others as she looks to continue to gain education in clergy health, and how she can mentor clergy in their own wholistic self-care journeys. Ordained elder in VA, serving in Chapel Hill, NC. I graduated from Duke Divinity in 2012, and for the last decade have served in higher ed at Duke and in churches in Durham and Chapel Hill. My health journey really began in 2011. I decided as I finished seminary, I wanted to make my physical health a priority. I managed to maintain a hundred pound weightloss for the last decade through better nutrition and activity (even through the birth of two kids). I also found myself passionate about helping clergy find rhythms of self-care that would contribute to well being for the whole self. That passion led me to work with the Clergy Health Institute through Pfeiffer University beginning in 2016. I am currently pursuing certification as a health coach, but I think health covers the whole person-mental, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and physical. https://instagram.com/revkorirobins (@revkorirobins on Instagram) https://www.pfeiffer.edu/clergy-health-institute/ (Pfeiffer Clergy Health Institute)

Jessica Plummer joined us on episode 17 as part of our strong mother series (https://activefaithpod.com/the-pod/jessica-plummer/ (Listen Here)). This time she joins to talk about life when things are tough, when it doesn’t go the way that we think it should go, and when things just don’t feel fair. This episode almost feels cathartic in a way for Jessica and I to share feelings about what is happening in our lives right now, but hopefully also allows an opportunity for this community to unpack a theology of how to care for ourselves when life is tough. In a conversation centered around self-worth, Rev. KC joins to talk about their journey and struggles as they have sought to understand caring for themself more. Rev. K.C. Van Atta-Casebier (they/them) has served as an Associate Pastor and Director of https://foundryumc.org/familyministries (Family Ministries) at Foundry United Methodist Church since January of 2020. They find their passion at the intersections of LGBTQIA+ advocacy, the work of anti-racism, education, and family life. K.C. believes that young people are the leaders of today — not tomorrow — and works tirelessly to give kids and youth opportunities for full participation and leadership in the church and the community. In return, the youth make fun of their southern accent. K.C. is from Nashville, TN, and spent significant portions of their life in both Montevallo, AL and Martin, TN. They received a B.A. from Trevecca Nazarene University where they majored in Religion and Biology with minors in both Youth Ministry and Genetics. K.C. also played four years of collegiate basketball at Trevecca. In 2019, K.C. graduated summa cum laude from Duke Divinity School. A lifelong Methodist who has served in ministry for over ten years, they were commissioned as a provisional Deacon in the Tennessee Conference of the UMC in 2019. Kate Fletcher is a teacher in Louisa Country, Virginia, and as she found her love for running and the way it made her feel as she cared for herself, she also noticed a way she could help others (namely many of her students as well). When she gathered along with other teachers Lion Pride Run was born and became an opportunity to use her passion to help others. She, along with those around her noticed how running made her feel, how it reinvigorated her, and she want to help encourage her students to do the same. Instead of encouraging them to run 105 miles, she invites them to consider the metaphorical miles that will help them be better prepared to accomplish their own dreams in life. Since 2017, Shood has distributed over 10,000 pairs of shoes in RVA. Robin founded Shood as an opportunity to give back to the community that she lives in. She found an opportunity to use something that many folks discard and give them a second life to help those who are in need in the Richmond community. The average running shoe has a life span of 300-500, but that doesn't mean it still can't give life to help those who need shoes to have a good pair on their feet. This is what led Robin to start Shood, and Robin talks in this episode how her own passions led her in this venture and how she balances this effort and caring for herself and family at the same time.Mission: Shood collects new and gently used running shoes, reconditions and distributes to those who are homeless or living in poverty in Richmond, VA. Sean is always trying to be the best version of himself. Sometimes that means running as fast as he can and pushing the limits. Other times it means offering grace in the midst of growth.
Turner Wilkes works with school age children and is on staff at a church in Chesterfield, Va working primarily with youth and the praise band in worship. However, Turner's true passion is being out in nature, and as such he describes his exploits as worship in and of itself. For many of us we ask ourselves, "Do we truly take opportunities to worship?" Whether you work in the church or not do you take moments to engage in worshipful acts that fill your soul. Worship is that which connects us to God, and by that definition becomes an important part of a theology of self-care. Turner takes us on a worship journey, and explores this nature of connecting to God through nature, and photography. Let us ask ourselves how we see ourselves being cared for in the midst of worships and how we can treat worship as an escape from the hecticness of every-day life, no matter or where we find that sense and experience. Joe has tried many times throughout his life to live a healthy lifestyle. He has wrestled with what healthiness means for him, and what it looks like for him to be healthy. In this episode he talks about how he has gained weight, lost weight, and talks about his overall relationship with food. What has it meant for Joe to change this mindset of food merely filling us to food fueling us? What role has Joe's family and friends played in his journey to redefine health for himself? We cover many topics in this episode to develop and look at how Joe wrestled with what held him back in his pursuit of living actively and healthily. His journey is one I think we can all approach as we build our own theology of self-care to note how we must define how we will help to heal the pains and wounds of our past. Mochel Morris joins us to talk about the connection of our body, mind, and spirit. We dive into connecting the active to the spiritual and engaging in activity through meditation. Mochel is a retired pastor in the United Methodist Church, and residing in the midst of God’s creation she has turned her manner of physical activity into an expression of spirituality. Activities like meditative walks, yoga, and others are manners in which she connects with God’s intended purpose of self-care for her life. You will here us talk about different manners she uses these actions to focus her body, mind, and spirit to align them in a manner of self-care. In taking that understanding she encompasses how our self-care is not singleminded, but leads us to fully adopt a manner that cares for us fully. Josh Wax joins to tell about his journey in the weightlifting and strength training world. How did he get there, and how has he gone from feeling weak to using his strengths. Josh is involved in the weightlifting and strongman scene, and enjoys reaching new goals in the gym. Josh works in the restaurant industry, but has dreams to become a personal trainer as he continues to reach his goals and help others reach theirs as well. As we work at building our own theology of self-care we know there are times when we may feel weak in our lives. However, it is about how we continue to focus on ways to care for ourselves. Failure will happen, but it is how we respond to failure that helps to inform the people we will be going forward. Limitations, adversity, and weakness are common themes as we pursue self-care as a spiritual practice.
