I never thought I would find the confidence to share my story with you, but here I am. It was scary to be vulnerable, but I knew it was worth it if it could help someone else. Acceptance letter to Harvard...wait what? Yes, our guest, Kassandra graduated valedictorian of her class last year and received a very prestigious acceptance letter to attend Harvard University among other ivy league schools, but better yet, she is a first generation college student to attend school in the US. Did I mention she is the first in her family to pursue a medical degree?
Without her parents even speaking English and for some time period not even living in the country, so how did she do it? She will share this and so much more with us including:

Today I have a very special guest in a brand new Student Spotlight episode where I will spotlight a current college student. Regardless of what career you are pursuing, these student spotlight segments will be for everyone because we all can learn from each other and from other people's experiences. Who knows, you might find your career path just by listening to one of these special episodes!
As our first guest we have Katia, Katia was Born and raised in Houston Texas. She earned a Bachelors Degree of Science from The University of Dallas! She is currently working on her Doctorate Of Optometry from The University of Houston. Being the first in her immediate family to pursue a career in healthcare, Katia is a great example of someone who is following her love and passion. All throughout her childhood and high school, she had set her mind on being a veterinarian and it wasn’t until her college advisor asked her about her plan b that Katia started thinking and questioning what else is out there for herself. And thanks to that one conversation, Katia explored options beyond veterinary school. Friend, I hope you have one if not more than one takeaway from this conversation as Katia shares with us her career journey.
In this episode we will also talk about: mental health, shadowing experiences, seeking out mentors and counselors for advice, making new friends in college, how to find study groups, being ok with failing, getting out of your comfort zone and so much more! I can't wait for you to listen.

I know this year is going to be an epic year for all of us without a doubt. And you know why I say that? Because if you're actually listening into this podcast, even though I might not know all of you personally, I know you're here for the right reason. We all want to achieve more, right?
Today's conversation is going to revolve around New Year resolutions. And if you don't already have one, well this might spark a little light in you to take action. It is going to be a real talk, raw conversation. I feel so many of us can all feel like crap when we don't achieve our goal or if we “fail” at it. We will talk about what "failing' actually means and how to change that negative connotation attached to the word "failure".
We will answer some of these questions: Why do we set goals in the 1st place? How can we take action? Does a vision board, planner or agenda help?
Why do we set goals?
- Put it out into the world and universe. If you are Christian, you are letting our God almighty know what is in your heart and what you want to achieve.
- When we write it, read it and talk about we begin to believe more and more that we can reach them. You know the saying, out of sight out of mind. So write them, write somewhere you can see them daily. Vision board is a great idea, but here is my two cents on that, sometimes (including myself) we spend so much creating the board, or beautifying our planner and we actually fail to TAKE ACTION. So don’t get so overwhelmed in the process of jotting it down or creating your vision board that it takes away from the time it takes to take action!
In this episode we will also go over common mistakes that we typically make when we set goals. And trust me my friend, I have probably made all of these mistakes myself.
Common mistakes
- Don't beat down on yourself for not achieving a goal. Remember our definition of failure “FAILing is ones first or first few attempts in learning." So much more liberating right? Always just remember Sonia’s long chapter books of attempts in learning and what I learned each and every time I thought I had failed at something.
- Too broad
- Too many
- Don't give yourself enough grace
- Comparing yourself to others
- This one is for parents, we are too hard on our kids when sometimes we might not be the best example of it either
Best tips
- It needs to achievable
- Accountability
- Make it fun!
- Celebrate the process not just the end result

To wrap up our first season I have a special guest. Dr. Nav is a neurostructural focused family wellness chiropractor and functional health practitioner with special interests in preconception, prenatal and pediatric care. She enjoys speaking to, teaching, and sharing modern and alternative wellness strategies with her community and professional groups. She has been nominated as a top chiropractor in Michigan for the past 4 years and often sought out by other local health care practioners to achieve the best possible results for their mutual clients. She received her Bachelors degree at the University of Michigan-- Ann Arbor and her doctorate at Life University in Marietta, GA. She currently resides in Linden, Michigan with her husband, Kyle and 2 dog children. I love the conversation that we had and I really cannot wait for you to listen to it whether you are parent or a student. I think there is something for both of you. As so many of our conversations this season, I personally ended up learning so much from our conversation. As you will hear Dr. Conn, as so many students, graduated from high school really not knowing exactly what career path she wanted to pursue. It wasn't until she got to college that she really found her love and passion for the career that she is in now. I won't give you all the details so you can listen to her but this is a great story. I cannot wait to see Dr. Conn continue to grow in her professional and personal life. She will also share her journey as a first generation Indian American college student and how she dealt with the struggle of mental overload and her own mental health during her first years in college. These friends are the raw conversations we need to be having both you and I, parents with our children and our children with us as parents. I hope you leave inspired through this conversation.

Our special guest on today’s episode is Alfonso Aguirre. Alfonso is an actor, acting coach and print model in Houston, TX. He has experience working in television, commercials, short films and print work as well as coaching other actors to get them ready for their auditions. He was also featured on AMC's “Better Call Saul”.
Alfonso will walk us through his career journey and how his life has changed in the last three years after he made the decision to put all of his effort, desire and time in reaching his Plan A. I love how he shared during our conversation that things really started changing in his life when he stopped thinking of a Plan B!

Her authentic transparency in our conversation will hopefully encourage you to be your child’s greatest cheerleader and coach to not give up and keep on knocking on doors. Sometimes, they may give up when that very next door was the one with an opportunity! If there is something Courtney will offer all of us is her transparency about her journey. Not many people will do that, and I think we all can learn from her experience. Today we have Megan Eddinger as our guest speaker. She is a mom of three with her oldest in his first semester of college. Megan shares with us her intentional conversations she has had with her children and how these conversations have given her oldest the opportunity to face challenges, obstacles and ultimately leading the way to his personal and career journey. Do you have a high school senior friend, are you preparing yourself for your child's first year of college, do you have younger ones who you are wanting to learn how to have intentional conversations with? Is your child actively involved in sports and is that something you are considering when coaching him through the college selection process?
Do you have a child who you feel the traditional education system is not a good fit for his or her learning style and you are wondering how can you encourage them?
When should you start having intentional conversations with your children?
Right now friend, no matter what their age is and Megan will encourage you with some great tips!
Remember a few episodes ago, on episode 3 (Community Building) we spoke about intentional conversations with our children's teachers and with 'their' community? Megan shares with us how she reached out to them when she needed extra support to encourage her child.

I am excited to have Kim Gushanas, Ph.D., as our guest speaker! Dr. G, as her patients call her, is a licensed Psychologist and an assistant professor at The University of Texas Medical Branch. She started practicing with adults helping them with their anxiety and mental health. After working with them she realized she was often wishing she would met them earlier in life! And thus her interest in pediatric care arose. She quickly expanded her expertise by working with children in multiple settings and specializing in pediatric treatment and mental health care. She also emphasizes how important it is to help our children early on in their life to be able to develop social and stress management skills while also workin with any mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety to name a few. Some of the topics we discuss during our conversation are:
- Suicide prevention and postvention strategies for parents
- Mental health programs found in schools
- Parent tips and strategies to build communication skills with your children
- How to start talking to your children today and having intentional conversations
- How to help our children resolve their problems and identifying when to listen, act, and sympathize with them
- The importance of parent modeling behavior when in stressful or uncomfortable situations
- Practicing active listening and identifying how to support our children

Today I share with you some thoughts and questions to ask yourself. Do you have in your community people who you can reach out to when you are having a rough time in your life? Do you have open and honest conversations with your friend community, with your family, at work or at school? Do others reach out to you when they too have roadblocks in their life? If so, then I applaud you, because YOU have created that environment between your friendships, your family and your community. If you don't, what is holding you back?
Let's challenge ourselves to say we are good (or great) only when we truly mean it. Let's be raw and open when things aren't going so well, especially with our kids so they learn from us and how we handle rough moments in our life. I can't wait for you to listen in!

Ever thought of being with the same company for 23 years and still loving it! Today I am very excited to share with you our guest Rachel Vargas. What is the secret? She is passionate about what she does! She has gone from admin support to a general managerial role and from operational to sales. Now as a top leader in her company she loves to inspire others just like you. She talks and shares some of those necessary skills for our leaders of tomorrow. She shares tips and life lessons that I promise each one of us can take a little nugget of wisdom from. A few of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:
- Her parents were hardworking and instilled and encouraged her at an early age to be financially independent.
- Say yes to more things! She says you will figure it out. That 1st ONE step might be the step to so many other opportunities that might come about!
- I love her heart of giving back. As a leader she works with her team so they can accomplish their own personal goals!
- She shares with us how to work well with people we might find difficult to work with. Great tips for our kids!
- She also references mentors as part of her success. She hopes that our young kids can also surrounds themselves with good people who will help them fill in any gaps to help them succeed; ultimately encouraging and helping them.

Join me as I share a great story! One that will make you feel enlighten and encouraged us to say more positive words and words of affirmation when talking to our children. This story was remarkable because it talks about how a high schooler thought of himself and how that reflected in his performance and how the result of ONE test changed his life! There is more to this story, but I don't want to give the story away so listen in. What I do want to tell you is that some times our kids feel and think in a way that really hurts them. So I take this story and bring a twist to it, to ask ourselves how WE as moms, dads, momfluencers help our kids reach their full potential by what we verbally say to them! Motivate them by highlighting words of affirmation on any opportunity you have with them. Will they encounter the opposite in life at times, yes absolutely we all will, but with all the small nuggets of words of affirmation that you have verbally told your child will hopefully add up and be easily accessible in that time of need. Hey, maybe they will share some nuggets of wisdom to us too when we most need it. Don't tell them to change their way of thinking, you change the way you think of THEM, FIRST!
