Hanna PK is a solid pianist, soulful vocalist, and vibrant performer, born and raised in South Korea, currently residing in Rochester, NY. She plays a wide variety of the blues & swing, old school folk, and boogie-woogie. She has a dynamic songwriting style - ranging from a funky tune with socially conscious lyrics to a mournful slow blues, from a pop-edged ballad to an uplifting swinging number, and from barrelhouse boogie to jazz. Her seemingly sweet and soft-spoken appearance often leads to surprise when hearing her rich, resonating voice that goes from a whisper to belting with intensity. Her piano style is much more lyrical and imaginative than simply repeating so-called “licks”, though she knows when to toss them in the mix for a thrill, and is always in the groove. And what draws the audience closer to her heartfelt, honest music are her genuine passion, and the originality that comes from within.
In November 2021, She released her debut album on the VizzTone Label with Booga Music of internationally-known bluesman, Kenny Neal. Though Kenny had met her in Memphis, and during his tour in upstate New York, what got his attention to sign her to his label was a video of hanna’s performance on a Curtis Jones’ song “Decoration Day Blues” that she recorded in her U-Haul storage room. Debuted at #13 on Billboard’s US Blues chart, since its release, the album has been played all over the U.S. and the world.
But words, and even recorded samples, cannot fully convey the essence of Hanna’s ''music — to really understand it and feel it, you have to hear her perform live. Her music continues to evolve and reflects the very moment she is living in — the happenings and vibe in the room, the reactions of her listeners, the musical contributions of each band member, and even the events of the week in the world, all combine to inspire a new and different performance of each song. As is the case with all true blues performers, she works from and in the tradition of the music while bringing her own stamp of creativity and originality to it. Her music tells a story, sometimes an age-old one, but she tells it in her way from her perspective, which in turn informs and expands our experience.

Los Angeles-based mastering engineer and vinyl cutter, Jett Galindo of The Bakery, has worked on albums spanning a wide array of genres and artists (Barbra Streisand, Haley Reinhart, Weezer, the La La Land OST, to name a few). Jett Galindo carries on the legacy left behind by her late mentor, mastering legend Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab).
Recipient of Summa Cum Laude honors and the 2012 Robin Coxe-Yeldham Audio Scholar Award from Berklee College of Music, Jett Galindo was mentored by luminaries in the music industry including George Massenburg; producer Prince Charles Alexander; recording engineer Susan Rogers (Prince’s Purple Rain); and mastering engineer and AES President-elect, Jonathan Wyner. Jett kickstarted her post-Berklee engineering career in the world-renowned Avatar Studios in New York (now known as Power Station) as the recording engineer for producer Jerry Barnes. As Barnes’ engineer, Jett engineered for veteran artists such as legendary singer-songwriter Roberta Flack, Nile Rodgers, Bashiri among others.

What is the next right step? This is the question author June Gervais asks herself every time she sits down to write.
June Gervais's debut novel, Jobs for Girls with Artistic Flair (Pamela Dorman Books/Viking Penguin, June 2022), is a coming-of-age love story about a young queer woman striving to make it as a tattoo artist in the gritty, male-dominated tattoo industry of the 1980s. Julia Rose Studios is an avid musical adventurer, whether on a stage or exploring the mountains, she’s sure to have an instrument in hand. After years of vagabonding through the states, singer-songwriter Anthony Siciliano returned to his home city of Rochester, New York, and began to build Head to the Roots - an original roots rock music project. With humble beginnings as a one man band, Anthony performed live around the area while also producing two EP’s, Transitions and Seeker, which were recorded in the likes of his bedroom and parent’s basement. Now, Head to the Roots has evolved into a four-piece band. They perform on some of Rochester’s most renowned stages, they are touring through the North East, and are currently working on recording a new album.

My guest this month is Solange Rodrigues, a dancer, choreographer and educator. Our conversation ranges from finding inspiration during the pandemic to the importance of rest.
Solange Rodrigues is a graduate of SUNY Purchase College, Class of 2020, with a BFA in dance, and a concentration in composition. Born and raised in Rochester, NY, she trained at Little Red Dance Studio for 14 years. At Purchase, she performed in several works and choreographed pieces within the Conservatory of Dance, as well as the Conservatory of Theater Arts. While teaching at various schools and studios throughout the city of Rochester, she is continuing to make work, and is currently dancing for Frazee Feet Dance under the direction of Zachary Frazee, BioDance under the direction of Missy Pfohl Smith, and is a guest artist for The Pocketfuel Groovers, directed by Nick Alselmo.

Welcome to my open, vulnerable conversation with artist and healer Yen Ospina. We discuss her astounding artwork and creative process, highlighting the beauty and power of women of color, intergenerational trauma, and methods of healing.
Yen Ospina is the daughter of Colombian born immigrants who came to the United States in order to provide a better life for their child. As a proud LATINX queer artist, Yen enriches the lives of those around her through her unique and captivating work. A multi-talented artist, she creates in multiple mediums and scales - from digital prints to community murals. Her work centers on themes of power, mysticism, and visibility. She utilizes a core color palette of ochre, chocolate, cinnamon red, earthy orange, and a deep dusty teal that makes her diverse body of work instantly recognizable as done in her hand.

Kristina Kaiser is a multi-media artist, creative consultant, and museum professional. She has been living and creating in Rochester, NY for most of her life. In 2013 Kristina earned a BFA in Studio Arts: Painting with a dual major in Art History from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Kristina is widely exhibited in the Rochester area and has been directing the Yards Collective since 2017. Acting as an art administrator Kristina has developed programming to help support and encourage emerging artists to reach creative success.

Zahyia, a songwriter, lyricist, producer and creative visionary, has dedicated her life to existing in spaces that elevate and change the limited narratives, images, and awareness of what it means to exist as a Black American Woman. With her eclectic background of Jazz, Hip-Hop, R&B, Lo-fi Hip-hop, Music Theater, Funk and Soul, Zahyia finds ways to push traditional boundaries in the world of music and Alternative R&B. In this conversation, she discusses letting go of the idea of perfection, infusing creativity into every aspect of life, and the unavoidable reality that all of us are struggling right now. Zahyia has found unconventional ways to build her daily life so that both her creative process and her family can flourish. Even as she pursues her artistic goals, she practices the art of appreciating the little things.
