Pilates reformer class injuries are so high in the UK that the government is now considering more regulation. In this episode I discuss why we should be focusing on safe Pilates vs. cheap Pilates, why buying commercial grade apparatus is important, and how a comprehensive certification will help you as a Pilates teacher, no matter what path you choose.

It's true! I increased my bone density 5% in just two years, without any hormones, medications, or special supplements. All the goodies are in here.
Faster Way To Fat Loss
Osteoporosis Modifications for Pilates
Puff Puff Pilates
NEW - Transcript:
Hey everybody, it's Lynda Lippin.
Welcome back to the Pilates Goddess podcast.
I am so thrilled to be here with you in February 2026.
Even though you know, things in this world are really hard right now.
Things in this country are really hard right now.
0:19I'm personally having an OK entrance into 2026, so the biggest thing that's happened over the last two years for me is that I did manage to pay off a chunk of debt that I really needed to pay off.0:44I worked my little butt off to do that and I also managed to increase my bone density by 5% in the last two years. That's right, 5%, another 3% and I will be back to normal range and not in osteopenia anymore.1:07And I also managed to pack on about 20 lbs of muscle but net lose about 20 lbs.So you know, I am just happy with how the body is working right now.And in addition to all of this, because I have so much arthritis in my joints and they are indeed going to need to be replaced, I'm seeing a physiatrist at Mount Sinai and we're kind of working through some stuff.1:32But realistically, you know, I can't 'cause my joints any much more harm. And right now it's good for me to be in less pain to kind of reset my nervous system, get my sleep back on point, maybe get off more of the gabapentin because THC seems to be working well for my pain.1:54That the injections that I'm getting, steroid injections, in my hip and shoulder and my neck will keep me pain free enough to avoid the joint replacements for another year or two.2:12That's all I'm doing.Like I know I need the joints replaced, but I'm not ready to do that now.And the way forward is to basically shoot 3 in 1 oil in there like the Tin Man.But I got to tell you, I had my left hip injected last Thursday and it felt so much better.2:38I had kind of a rough Thursday, you know, because the injection site gets sore and I was tired and whatever, But by the time I went out on Saturday, I was feeling like significantly better.I can walk stairs now without having to hold on to the banister, which is really exciting.2:56My balance is better.I don't have to limp when I first get up from bed or the couch, which was starting to happen. And I'm getting my shoulder injected next Thursday and I am so excited because my left shoulder is so clunky and so fucked up that if to just have that smoothed out a little is gonna be awesome.3:21Now, these things are temporary, right? So an injection might last, you know, three to six months. So I just figure, you know it somewhere between probably two and four times a year, I will need to go get these shots.3:37And when I'm tired of that, I'm gonna get my joints replaced and I will then be bionic and even more awesome than I am now.All right, in other news, Puff Puff Pilates is going really well.3:55I, as I'm sure you can all imagine, am really enjoying this Stoner Pilates goddess era of my life.I am thrilled to be open about my use of cannabis, about my use of cannabis for pain, for anxiety, regulation, for sleep, for all kinds of things.4:18I've been doing it for 47 years, my friends, but it's finally legal, so I talk about it.And if you want to know if I talk about it with my doctors as freely as I do here and with friends and whoever wants to hear about it, yeah, I do.4:35My doctors all know what I do.They all know how much plant I use, how I use it, and they're all fans because I'm doing well.So let's kind of deep dive into what I've done for the Osteoporo Osteopenia and why.4:59As you may know, if you've been a long time listener of the podcast or you know me or you've read some of my articles, my struggles with endometriosis. For most of my life I had pretty severe endometriosis with bladder and bowel involvement.5:16I was in pain, I had to pee all the time, felt like I had a urinary tract infection even though I didn't for like 2 years. That was fun and finally had a total abdominal hysterectomy about 30 years ago after a year of being on Lupron, which is an injection that a monthly injection that essentially stops any kind of sex hormone in your body.5:47So it stops estrogen, it stops progesterone, it stops testosterone, all the things, right.I therefore have had low estrogen levels, which are intrinsic, you know, crucial to bone strength for much of my life.6:09In addition, I struggled a lot with food when I was like 12/13/14 and and a little bit after that.My mother was bipolar and there was just a lot of dysregulation going on around me and people didn't always notice really what I was doing.6:34So I regulated food and I was eating literally 600 calories a day.I remember 600 calories a day.I was writing down my meals, and that's really not enough calories to build bone for an adolescent girl.6:52So in addition to the hormonal challenges, you also have kind of the old anorexia challenges. But now I'm good with food, right? And I'm really good with exercise.7:09During the two years prior to my last bone density scan, I was in horrible, horrible chronic pain from long COVID.And with that chronic pain, I could not do a lot of strength training or high intensity exercise.7:31I had to really stick to very low intensity Pilates, you know, yoga, very low intensity in home, like walking and cardio workouts and such things as that.Pain started to abate.7:48I discover that my bone density is like down.I went from normal.I went from like at least 0.3 to -1.8.So I looked at the results of that DEXA scan.8:06I saw osteopenia in my lumbar spine and I said hell no, no, no, no, not today.Osteopenia.I am not dealing with this shit.I do not have time.So the first thing that I did is I know of an extraordinarily effective online at based community based resistance training program called Faster Weight of Fat Loss.8:37I've talked about it on here before. The founder, Amanda Tress, is a friend of mine.I was a beta coach for her for many moons and knew her before.Faster way.And it's effective and basically half an hour a day, half an hour to 45 minutes.8:58So I let my husband know that I was signing back up for the program.I reached out, I signed back up, and because I'm a pretty talented personal trainer who knows you know how to do things, I was easily able to translate all of the resistance workouts where they were using kettle bells or dumbbells into one dumbbell and bands and tubing.9:36I live in a studio apartment with my husband. All of my workout equipment fits into a small drawer.I use heavy tubing.I mean, I have metal doors so my my doors can take the weight.I overhead press, you know, 30 lbs of tubing.9:56I chest press 60 lbs of tubing off the door right now.It you know, I'm using heavy stuff and I use also looped mini bands for things like preacher curls and concentration curls.I've really broken down the entire program into doable band and tubing and I just started working out.10:24Now, when I first started back on faster way, I was certainly not using this level of resistance.I think I was using maybe a 10 LB tubing and maybe a 20 LB tubing and that was like as far as that was going. And then I, you know, as things get easier or sometimes I can tell, you may think this is funny, but I connect my tubing to the bottom of my bathroom door, which faces my galley kitchen and my microwave.11:01So if I'm doing chest pressing and I get super close to the microwave, I know it's time for me to up the resistance and get something new.And then I start further back so that I am consistently challenging myself.11:19If you've ever used looped mini bands at all the colored ones, I now deadlift with the extra heavy. The heavy and the light. So you know, it's it's a lot it's a lot of poundage, but being consistent and doing the work has led to me having 5% more bone density without having to take medication.11:54I didn't start any hormone therapy.I haven't taken any shots. There's nothing else is going on.I'm resistance training and if you don't do classical Pilates, but you're doing some other form of of Pilates that might be a little faster paced, that might use slightly lighter resistance.12:19I want you to understand that that work is not necessarily going to give you bone strengthening benefits in the way that working on classical Pilates equipment will. Now why is that?Because the springs are heavier, there's no ball bearings in the wheels on the reformers, so a lot more strength is required and a lot more strain through the larger muscles.12:46And every single exercise is modifiable for osteopenia or osteoporosis.I don't give a shit what anybody says. You can go on my website, go to lintalippman.com/everything and you will see teacher workshops that I recorded, very simple ones for Matt and for all of the apparatus just talking about osteoporosis modifications.13:15So I started doing more Pilates.I added in the faster weight of fat loss resistance training and I'll put a link to all these things in the show notes. But doing the consistent work led to me increasing my bone mass and my strength and my muscle mass.13:37Now it was very interesting and I want to talk to you about this because I think this is important for everyone to hear.OK, this is not just me patting myself on the back.It is important for everyone to hear is that we can all do this.13:54It just requires the work.If you're not the kind of person who wants to exercise with an app then and or you are comfortable with working out at home, but you want somebody say on Zoom to be watching your form and help put you through that, then you know, contact me, contact some online trainers and get somebody to do that with you.14:19OK, That's a thing people do that if you are not comfortable working out at home, but you want to go to your gym, then go to your gym. There's also a gym track actually in faster way to fat loss.So if you want to go to the gym, they take you through the whole workout using the equipment you would commonly find any any gym.14:42But again, if you want to use tubing, if you want to use free dumbbells or free weights, if you want to use kettle bells, that's, you know, easy, easy, easy to do.So when I went to see the physiatrist at Mount Sinai for my intro visit, we kind of talked about my joints and my body.15:03And he saw where I could move and where I couldn't move. And, you know, we started talking about injections and joint replacements and things. So when I came back into him after I had had, you know, the X-rays and the MRI of the neck and I came back in to get my hip injected, he said to me, do you want to have a phone call in two weeks about this hip injection?15:33Or would you rather come back in and let me do your shoulder? And I of course, was like, let me come back in and do my shoulder. So I'm doing that next week. But he said to me that my range of motion and my strength were remarkable.15:51That was the word he used - remarkable. He he informed me that my hypermobility has both hurt me and helped me over the course of my life. And that I know! We discussed the fact that I was right over the past few years in prioritizing strength and protection around my joints as much as I could instead of prioritizing mobility.16:16That I was right in prioritizing strength so that now I have the bone mass if I need to get joint replacements.Yeah.Hello.And he was like, you have done remarkably. You have the most mobility and the most strength in these really horrible joints.16:40He's like, if I, if I looked at you move and I looked at your X-rays and didn't know they were connected to the same human, I wouldn't necessarily believe that they were connected to the same human. So I was thrilled.I was thrilled with that because frankly, my friends, this is what I do.17:00This is what I do for my clients. This is what I do for, you know, my loved ones and this is what I do for myself. What I'm really good at is binding those areas of weakness in the body, getting the nervous system to calm down enough so that the body is able to move in a better way and then really work on strength and mobility.17:33I view it almost as trying to put, say, a badly arthritic shoulder in the best place.I envision where the bones could be or should be for the best movement. And then what I do strength-wise is basically try to build enough scaffolding around that joint using some of the muscles that maybe aren't there or overstretched or aren't working so well.18:06Build scaffolding around that so that the majority of the time the joint holds in place and functions properly. There are a few positions which some of my Pilates teachers have seen over the past six months where that shoulder is clearly not, not able to work properly.18:27And I and I, I can picture Melissa Castro at Real Pilates just going, "don't do that.I don't like that shoulder!" when I was on the chair. So this happens. But you know, we age or if we are prone to arthritis, our joints get arthritic.18:50If we were prone to hypermobility, sometimes we moved our joints in inappropriate ways, dislocated things, had things popped back in.We've had car accidents, we've had boat accidents, we've had falls. We've, you know, lived and I view the role of exercise, the role of Pilates, the role of anything that we're doing literally to keep us feeling and functioning at our highest levels for as long as we can.19:23Feel and function at your best for as long as you can.OK, That's all I'm asking. That's all I wish for you.So, my friends, you know I love you so much.I know life is really hard right now in these United States and in this world, OK?19:46I am feeling for the people in Maine and Minnesota and and California and Chicago, and like everywhere, I am feeling deeply, deeply for all of us.20:04And I wish you all the best, but I'm telling you right now, if you can get your body to feel and function as best as it can, and I promise you that is at a much higher level than you may think.20:22Because I am feeling and functioning at a much higher level than even my like Mount Sinai physiatrist thinks I should be.That is a great place to start because if you're doing better, then you can help other people do better.20:41So I leave you with that.If you'd like to get in touch with me about anything I spoke about today, feel free to reach out lynda[AT]lyndalippin.com.Spelled like my name.DM me on social media, register for a Puff Puff Pilates event if you're in New York City.21:00I'll be at Mighty Lucky on a February 22nd for Awaken Bake and I will talk to you guys soon.Bye.

This past weekend I attended Revelry, the professional NYC cannabis convention. I went for 3.5 hours to do a very targeted networking session (there were over 200 brands there). I spoke with over 30 brands - about 1 every 6 minutes - and left with 18 new contacts who are interested in discussing partnerships.
How did I do that? A clear elevator pitch & QR code for more info. Listen for the exact formula I used.
Also, it's my 59th birthday next week, so use code happy59 to take 59% off all my Pilates Teacher Mastermind® & Strong Bones digital downloads.
Come celebrate with me tomorrow at The Collective High 9/17, 6-9pm, midtown - consumption, vibes, pilates, food, goodie bag
And join Puff Puff Pilates at Le Flora Cannabis in the FIDI 9/28, 2-3:30pm - smoke sesh, pilates, food, goodie bag

In my quest to support Pilates teachers (and clients) from all lineages, I've come up with some simple ways to help everyone organize Pilates exercises so that both teaching and learning are easier.
Mnemonic devices (like "i before e, except after c") are what I use. In this episode I explain what they are and how to use them to make your life easier.

I keep reading more and more accounts of people being injured in larger mixed-level Pilates classes, especially on the reformer. This increase is due to a number of factors, including owners who don't know Pilates and think cheapest apparatus is best, teachers who are rushed through training, and the divisiveness in the Pilates world, which makes continuing education difficult.
Here I talk about some easy ways to appropriately choose exercises, as well as what NOT to do.

I've been asking the question lately about how Pilates teachers approach clients with back pain. I lead with Romana's "bad back, keep flat". This simple approach keeps my clients safe, and here's why I love it.

Somehow every workout class today is selling itself as blended - HIIT cardio, strength training, and mobility work all in one. Unfortunately, this approach waters down the effectiveness of each class of work, and is unsustainable.
If you exercise daily, as many of the people who attend my Pilates classes do, please separate your workouts. I promise that yu'll feel a difference in all the best ways.

Today we start to sit up. These 4 exercises - Spine Stretch, Open Leg Rocker, Corkscrew, and Saw - work us in spine flexion, extension, and rotation. We sit, we rock & roll, we rotate the lower body with some added spine movement, and we rotate the upper body with added spine and shoulder movement.
These are SO important!

Rolling like a ball is our first experience in full spine flexion, head to tail. It's a fun one for flexion-tolerant healthy spines, and there are many ways to modify it and even make it harder!
Rolling prepares us for much of the mat to come, and helps us teach many flexion exercises in the system, including stomach massage, short spine, tower, monkey, and others.

It amazes me that women athletes are still underpaid, under supported, and under appreciated, even Olympians and Paralympians. Today I talk to Flame Bearers founder Jamie Mittelman, who is on a mission to make sure that people of all ages are inspired by women athletes who look and sound like them.
About Jamie:
A deep believer in the power of stories to change lives, Jamie Mittelman is deeply committed to elevating as many diverse voices as possible within the world of elite women’s sports. Her background is in media and international nonprofit work, having lived in Bangladesh working at the first liberal arts school for women in Asia. On the media side, Jamie managed a $30 Million portfolio for the conglomerate of Yahoo, The Huffington Post, AOL, and Verizon.
She holds a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS), where with the support of Harvard University’s Innovation Lab and Women and Public Policy Program, Jamie launched Flame Bearers, the first global storytelling platform for women Olympians and Paralympians. Jamie’s work with Flame Bearers reaches 48 countries and recently received multiple Awards in the categories of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Public Service & Activism.
Flame Bearers is a community driving positive change, building connections, and creating a space where women athletes feel valued and empowered to share their stories. We tell stories via podcast, video and live events, giving women Olympians & Paralympians a platform to share their trials and triumphs, discuss what life is like outside the games, what matters most to them, and bring unique perspectives to their stories. These stories deserve to be heard.
We would love to offer the chance to be featured in our community spotlight program, where we spotlight women-indentifying individuals via our social media channels. You can express interest here: https://forms.gle/8nisNksioEJrzKrZA

I spent much of my life as an activist - rocking the boat in multiple areas. I marched for women's rights, civil rights, for divestment from apartheid South Africa, and for union representation of teaching assistants, to name a few.
Now I rock the boat in Pilates. I've been in this business for 35 years, and have seen just about everything. I call it like I see it. And what I'm seeing and hearing from new teachers, and from new franchise businesses, is pretty scary.
Listen for some real talk about teaching Pilates.

I had my knee surgery last week, so today is a super short episode about Niching in your Pilates business. It's so important for Pilates teachers to really niche down into a target market. It helps you connect with your people online, talk to them effectively, and help solve their problems.
Niching down also makes us more valuable, and can make our work more effective and interesting on multiple levels. I'm saying it again - If you try to talk to everybody, you end up talking to nobody.

The fabulous Gwen Miller is back! As a Balanced Body Pilates educator, author of the upcoming book, Safe Movement for All Spines - A Guide to Spinal Anatomy and How to Work with 21 Spine and Hip Conditions, and creator of The Dynamic Spine, a continuing education course for Pilates, yoga, and fitness professionals, Gwen is the perfect person to discuss the language of healing.
If you teach any kind of movement to people in pain, & struggle to create an inclusive, healing environment, today's episode will help.
About Gwen:
Gwen Miller is a certified Pilates teacher with over 20 years of experience, a registered yoga therapist, and a Hendrickson Method manual therapist.
After losing 80 pounds and rediscovering her health, Gwen Miller discovered that she had “degenerative disc disease” and “degenerative joint disease.” She was only forty!
Unfortunately, due to her prior obesity and poor posture, the discs between her spinal vertebrae had become compressed and worn thin, and this caused excessive wear-and-tear of Gwen's spinal vertebrae. It was shocking news. She had to change everything she was doing or my discs and spine would continue to degenerate.
That was when Gwen discovered Pilates. At first, it was just another certification to add to her ever-growing list of qualifications, but when she found that it was a system of exercise that she could do even with her degenerated spine, Gwen fell in love. So much so that twenty years later she's a Master Instructor for Balanced Body Pilates, an international Pilates education company.
Gwen has a reputation as a teacher who helps people, working with those who have spinal pathologies and other joint issues, or are healing from injuries or surgeries.

I've been a huge fan of Ayurveda since my time at Parrot Cay, where I worked closely with our Ayurvedic doctor and experienced some profound positive change in my body as a result.
In today's discussion with NYC-based Ayurvedic doctor Simmi Chopra, we discuss both of our journeys from chronic disease to more balanced health, and how Ayurveda helps. We discuss what Ayurvedic medicine is and the dangers of an uninformed approach to Ayurveda, as we dispel several common myths about Ayurveda and cleansing.
If you've ever been interested in this effective ancient medicine tradition, this episode is for you!
About Simmi:
Simmi Chopra is an Ayurveda Doctor/ Practitioner based in NYC. She has a double Masters in Biostatistics and Molecular Biology from Rutgers University and JNU, which allows her to understand health problems from both mainstream as well as Ayurvedic perspective.
During her college days, Simmi's chronic sinusitis became unbearable, so she ended up going to Vaid (Ayurvedic Doctor) in her hometown, Lucknow. She was completely cured after 7 days of performing nasya, which is a very powerful therapy in Ayurveda. Since then she has seen amazing results with chronic migraine, diabetes, cholesterol, arthritis in my family.
The Ayurvedic perspective is based on the rejuvenation of your mind, body, and senses through changes in diet and lifestyle. Simmi holds workshops on Ayurveda in which she empowers people to start taking charge of their health and start eating, living mindfully according to Ayurvedic principles, and start being aware of the warning signs the body and mind gives before a health problem can manifest.

You never know who's going to walk into a Pilates class. And, you never know what's happening in their bodies or lives at that moment.
Your Pilates teacher training taught you the exercises and how not to hurt people, but probably didn't spend tons of time on cuing variations in a fully inclusive manner.
In this episode I break down how Pilates teachers can best prepare themselves for the challenge by being kind, and focusing on the point of each exercise.

As a very gifted intuitive, my friend and colleague Susan King is often privy to very delicate information about her high profile clients and their lives. Today we discuss how she discovered her gift, why her clients find her work to be so useful, and how Pilates teachers can approach our clients with the same care. And there may be some online dating scam stories ;).
About Susan:
Susan is well-known around the globe as a Master Intuitive Counselor, Spiritual Teacher, Emotional Healer, and Meditation Instructor. She is sought by many who are looking for clarity and peace of mind in the midst of chaos and confusion in their lives. Susan travels all over the world to holistically address the growing needs of her clients and conducts most of her work across New York, Los Angeles, and London.
Susan is known as a very genuine and down to earth person, and what many consider“a breath of fresh air.” She is positive, joyful, socially outgoing with a calm energy and warm grounded understanding that attracts even the most ‘hard to reach’ individuals. Susan discovered her intuitive gift at a very young age and since then, her intuition has gone through a complete metamorphosis, positioning her as a leader in Holistic Wellness.
In addition to intuitive counseling, she is a highly experienced Meditation Teacher, qualified by the British School of Meditation (BSOM), teaching people how to adapt the exercises into their daily lives for enhanced wellbeing. She is also an Indian Head Masseuse and brings this to any session to give her clients a deep state of relaxation.

I'm very concerned about the state of Pilates, and how new teachers are being introduced to taking care of other humans. When people pay us and entrust us with the care of their precious bodies, that's a big deal. Pilates without care & compassion isn't good for anyone, and the current market prioritizes numbers and not humans.

Another issue that gets brought up often among Pilates teachers is Sacroiliac Joint Instability. The issue here is that what your clients with SI instability feel like they want is often very different from what they need, which is more work on stability and less stretching.
Today I review the anatomy of the SI Joint, why instability happens, how the symptoms can mimic other back issues (so a medical diagnosis is important), and what to do about it. Hopefully this will help you and your clients!

I see tight hip flexors coming up in Pilates Teacher forums at least 2-3x every week. Even more concerning, I see people offering deep stretches and corrections that I know from experience can hurt more than help.
Let's deep dive into the hip flexors - what they are, where they are, and what they do. Learn why hip flexors get tight, and what exactly to avoid and do to help you and your clients feel and function at their best.

Lately all we hear about is fascia - fascial movement, fascial exercise, fascial release, fascial adhesions, tensegrity.... But what is fascia, really?
Can we release fascia, exercise our fascia, stretch our fascia? Does working fascia help us detox, reduce pain, and feel better? Listen for some scientific facts.

I recently had a client ask me about the "Superman" exercise on the reformer. This worried me, as there is no exercise by that name. There are a few things I thought of - swimming prep on the long box and swan.
So I went on YouTube and searched, and saw so many scary things! The only actual Pilates exercise I saw was the Long Stretch, incorrectly named Superman.
There is a specific language to Pilates - Joe named the exercises, the apparatus, and certain cues and principles. And when we don't use the specific language, it can confuse our clients and possibly lead to injury.

I'm seeing some disturbing Pilates teacher training trends online. From what I see, it seems that many Pilates teachers aren't getting what they should out of their training.
Pilates is not just the mat, the reformer, or the chair. Pilates is not just a group of exercises. Pilates is a system that has multiple components and ways of modification and variation. Minimally, even if you're just learning to teach mat, there should be some mention of the other apparatus and how mat fits in the system.
Your (online or live) Pilates training should include:
If you didn't get all of this in your training, or you did but need more support, come check out the fully online Pilates Teacher Mastermind® VIP, where you'll get all the education, community, and support! https://lyndalippin.com/pilates-teacher-mastermind

If you've noticed the proliferation of fake news and advertising over the past 7 years, you're not the only one! Part of the problem is that all "free" search engines and social media companies are, at heart, advertising platforms. So your top results will be whoever paid the most, not necessarily the best results.
Today's guest, Eric Olson, is trying to change that with Consensus, a search engine that returns evidence-based results. Instead of wading through ads for pharmaceuticals and links to questionable science, you can get the actual facts quickly and easily.
We talk about fake news, the limitations of free, ad-based search engines, and how and why Eric came to develop Consensus. You'll hear some real world examples of how I used Consensus to get the information I needed on dosages of the anti-inflammatory supplements my doctor recommended I take for a knee injury, and learn how you can use Consensus to get the best information for working with your Pilates clients or understanding scientific research on any issue.
About Eric:
Eric Olson is a talented data science professional with a Master’s in Predictive Analytics from Northwestern University. Before Consensus, Eric worked at the sports entertainment company DraftKings, where he was an Analytics Specialist building predictive machine learning models to understand the user base better. Eric came up with the idea for Consensus after spending years as a die-hard amateur science consumer and wanting access to better evidence-based information at the click of a button.
Eric formerly was a three-year starter for the Northwestern University Football team, is an avid skier, loves the outdoors, and hopes to convince NFL coaches someday never to punt again.

Today's episode is for all the Pilates teachers, apprentices, and anyone thinking about becoming a Pilates teacher.
If you're not sure what Pilates is or what Joseph Pilates taught....
If you're not getting answers to your questions from within your program...
If nobody watches you teach and offers advice...
If you're consistently questioning what you should be teaching in a Pilates class or session...
If teaching special populations scares you...
This is my take on the state of Pilates teacher training and Pilates mentorship, and how so much of what's out there isn't helpful.

In today's episode I sit down for a deep, gritty, inspiring talk with fitness professional, model, and author Linda Steele. In her new book, Nerves of Steele, Linda outlines her traumatic childhood, which morphed into a traumatic adulthood until she decided to take control of her own body, which then led to control of her life.
We dig deep into the long-lasting effects of childhood trauma, how that moves so many women into a life of depression and covering up, and how little changes, like taking control of what you put into your body and how you use your body, can change everything. It's what helped both of us!
Note that if you find talk of physical and emotional abuse, childhood neglect, addiction, and mental illness triggering, you may want to skip this one.
Linda's Bio:
Linda Steele is creative, passionate, dedicated, and determined to improve the lives of others through safe, efficient fitness. She believes that small goals and lifestyle changes can grow into massive accomplishments. Linda has been successfully helping clients reach their health and fitness goals by putting their bodies in the state where they are no longer dependent on blood pressure meds, cholesterol meds or anti depressants. She has committed herself to the improvement of her clients overall health while constantly researching the latest equipment and new ways of training. Linda cares about her clients and is thrilled to see their transformation of body, belief systems and ultimately, their lives.
Linda's 18+ years of experience as a certified Elite Trainer, Nutrition Expert, Exercise Therapist and Senior Fitness expert, has given her public speaking opportunities at events like, “The Best You,” and for various companies such as Canon, Otocompu, Potash, AJ Gallagher, Pampered Chef, Vistex, Grunt Style, Alpha Outpost, and Bally Total Fitness.

On the heels of last week's episode, let's discuss some truly dangerous "Pilates" trends - hot Pilates, large group reformer classes in the dark with loud music, and megaformers.
Why do I have issues with these? Because they aren't Pilates, and they have hurt people in ways that Pilates doesn't.

Lately my social feeds have been inundated with ads for "Pilates equipment". Band & tubing systems, bars with wheels, and souped up "reformers".
Conversely, I'm also seeing a lot of exercises done on mat & Pilates apparatus that are not Pilates exercises - exercises that Joseph Pilates didn't teach.
In this episode I try to push discernment. Let's learn what Joe Pilates actually taught, take a look at his actual apparatus that he invented, and ask ourselves if what we're doing and teaching is Pilates.

If you do or teach any kind of movement (Pilates, yoga, weights, TRX....), you probably have questions about the best cues for your clients. You may wonder why some cues don't work for some people, and why some cues that work well for you confuse other people. In the last episode, I discussed many things neuroscience with neuroscientist Greg Youdan, including this issue.
Today I'm focusing on external vs. internal cues, and why external cues tend to work much better. Asking ourselves or our clients where they feel an exercise, or telling ourselves or our clients where they should feel an exercise, is a recipe for confusion, misunderstanding, and potential disappointment.

Heads Up - This is a deeply personal episode, where I share a lot of my own struggles with loving myself. I discuss child abuse, self-loathing, and body dysmorphia.
If I hear the phrase "self-love" one more time, I think I will scream. First, what was taught to me as love growing up was very conditional and very dependent on my behavior, so I have no self-love that isn't conditional and performance-based.
If you have the same issues, don't feel bad. Many of us don't know what actual unconditional love looks like, so of course we have no idea how to love ourselves!
Let's talk about how to start that process, which has nothing to do with how much you eat or exercises, or whether you eat carbs.

The other day after I taught a Strong Bones class online, we started discussing how disconnected many fitness and pilates instructors are from their clients. Basically, how they lose compassion.
If you've ever experienced being yelled at by a trainer, shamed for not doing something correctly, or moved from the front row, you know what I mean.
Fitness is no place for mean people.

I'm SO EXCITED about today's episode!
Let's welcome Greg Davis, Jr. - better known as Klarity. Greg is a friend and neighbor, and also happens to be a brilliant actor, filmmaker, and stand up comedian. His new short film, Day of Joy, premiers on Amazon Prime Video tomorrow 12/21/22!
Greg opens up about his experiences of racism growing up in the south, how imposter syndrome almost cost him his first multi-season comedy TV gig (and how the universe conspired to make it happen anyway), what it was like sharing short form comedy in the early days of Vine, and how he sold his short film to Amazon. We dig deep into the mindset and the actions that he consciously took to build his success.
About Greg:
Best known under his handle Klarity, Greg has established himself as one of the top comedy content creators, bringing his unique sense of humor and style to all his content. Greg was a series regular for three seasons on TBS "10 Items or Less,” had a recurring role on "Lincoln Heights," and has guest starred on "The Shield," "CSI: New York" and others. Greg has also been in two feature films, "The Eyes," and "Unbreak My Heart," and the Toni Braxton biopic where he played LA Reid. Greg is passionate about fitness, empowerment and charity, and his digital voice and business endeavors are reflective of this.
Greg is the co-founder of Enzo Industries, a production company with a mission to deliver authentic and inspirational stories on screens big, small, and mobile, with content that reaches a global audience that's hungry for change, positivity and leadership. Currently he is focused on a character-driven 12-episode digital series “Johari’s Window,” which was accepted at the Golden Short Film Festival in Rome. Most recently, Greg has been focused on standup comedy and hosting skills and will star as the host of Uninterrupted’s new digital series, ‘Put You On?’, a fast paced open conversation spotlighting up and coming athletes in collaboration with Nike.

Neck Pain is the number one issue I hear about in Pilates teacher groups, and from clients. In this episode I break down the differences between documented cervical spine issues and shoulder injuries as opposed to simple weakness.
I also talk about proper spine positioning, what I leave out of my workouts to accommodate my neck, and how to cue your clients so they understand what to do with their necks, shoulders, and powerhouses.

I'm super excited about this episode, my friends! My friend Angie Garton is one of the UK's most sought-after menopause coaches, and I love her compassionate, science-based approach to helping women through the transition.
I've been in menopause since a total hysterectomy about 25 years ago, and stopped taking any HRT in 2016, so this conversation is right up my alley! We talk night sweats, hot flashes, inflammation, HRT, supplements, weight gain, and the role of nutrition and exercise.
Listeners can schedule a free 20 minute consultation with Angie (completely confidential), to provide some quick and effective advice on common issues such as low energy, sleep issues, emotional issues, low motivation, weight gain.
https://calendly.com/angiegarton/consultation?month=2022-10
About Angie:
Angie Garton provides menopause coaching to individuals and groups, and menopause consultation services to businesses and organisations, so that you can feel more like yourself again.
Her drive and enthusiasm come from wanting to provide real support, not just information. Having been part of the increasing awareness around menopause in the last ten years, she has seen a real need for us all to feel more hopeful and less fearful about the menopause transition.
Angie helps you to feel more confident and reassured in your approach to menopause, even if you're feeling stuck and overwhelmed right now.

My first Pilates teacher, Steve Giordano, used to always say, "When in doubt, leave it out," and I have used this in my Pilates teaching and in my own movements ever since. Frankly, when I ignore this advice, I tend to hurt myself.
If you have clients with chronic pain who hate certain exercises because the movements make them hurt more, I invite you consider leaving out those exercises.
If you have pain that is worse in your own body during or after certain movements (not just soreness), I invite you to feel free to skip those movements.

Short and sweet today! A colleague of mine asked a question in a Pilates teacher's forum -
"What are your tricks for lengthening out a spasming low back? Sometimes I’ll have a client come to their lesson with a low back spasm - I’m talking about a fit client who I know well - no referred pain. They may have been in the car too long or been gardening, etc."

If you have a spine, and especially if you have back pain or teach Pilates or any movement to clients with back pain and spine pathologies, this episode is for you!
Today's guest is the fabulous Gwen Miller, author of the upcoming book, Safe Movement for All Spines - A Guide to Spinal Anatomy and How to Work with 21 Spine and Hip Conditions, and creator of The Dynamic Spine, a continuing education course for Pilates, yoga, and fitness professionals.Gwen and I talk all things spine. We address the dangers of keeping the spine static and "neutral", discuss the importance of recognizing that every spine is different, and talk about how to allow every person to move in safe and supportive ways.
Listeners save 25% on The Dynamic Spine enrollment using the code PilatesGoddess:
https://www.gwenmillerstudio.com/the-dynamic-spine/

Did you know that there really is an order to the Pilates exercises? And that knowing the order will make structuring a workout so much easier, whether it's for yourself or a client?
Today I deep dive into the order and why it exists. I talk about why some teachers and clients don't know the order, and how this makes it more difficult to put together a flowing workout with appropriate modifications and variations.

Pricing your Pilates services is a hugely important step in creating your business. While it may seem OK to go by what "the going rates are" in your area, that's actually NOT the way to go.
In this episode I outline the steps of deciding how much money you need, how many hours you wish to work, and how many hours client-facing. I also discuss different business models, including dollars for hours, monthly subscriptions, and programs (online or in person).

If you enjoyed last week's episode about The Latest Pilates Lawsuit, you need to listen to this interview.
I invited my dear friend from graduate school, executive coach Dr. Martin Kettelhut, to talk about rebuilding and healing our very splintered Pilates community.
We discuss the Three Cs - Community, Connection, and Collaboration - why they're important, how to strengthen them, and what to do when we feel like we're losing them.
This discussion is helpful for all entrepreneurs, but especially Pilates teachers who are wrestling with divisions in Pilates land. No matter what your background, or how long you've been teaching, this conversation will help you think about things differently.
About Martin:
Dr. Martin Kettelhut is the author of Listen... Till You Disappear, and a triple bottom-line results-driven Executive Coach serving Business Leaders: CEOs, Entrepreneurs and Financial Advisors. He got into coaching because he's committed to a healthy economy that works for everyone. When he elicits the natural wisdom, compassion and joy in business leaders, they pay it forward, doing the same with their constituents.
Three pillars of the triple bottom-line results production:
He partners with his clients to attain success not only in business, but in life as well. In fact, when the latter two pillars work together as a foundation for your business and life, profits occur naturally.
All of the folks Martin works with discover their true purpose in life. Purpose allows you to prioritize--for both efficiency and effectiveness--what's important in your business and in your life. Your innate, God-given purpose tells you which goals and which relationships to take on, and which ones to let go of. It clarifies what's important versus what's merely urgent.
We all experience stumbling blocks from time to time, and we have limiting beliefs that cause seemingly insurmountable challenges. As he helps you uncover these "gremlins," you are able to authentically approach even the most impossible challenges and break through to achieve your most deeply desired outcomes—professional and personally.
Contact Martin and mention Pilates Goddess to receive a FREE coaching session. You bring a topic--something important to you--and he'll go deep with you to free you up and put you in your power around that issue.

Today I'm talking to my friend Alyson Limehouse, CEO Of Rollology Fitness, about her mission to serve clients and Pilates teachers.
We cover the state of Pilates, working with people in chronic pain, how and why she started Rollology, and why Pilates teachers should always look for continuing education that offers a clear ROI (return on investment) to help avoid burning out.
Burnout is common in all service professions, including Pilates. If you're feeling like you need help, this episode is for you!
Join Alyson's free FB group, Movement Instructors International - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1125864710940317
About Alyson:
Alyson Limehouse was first introduced to Pilates by her midwife in 1997, after giving birth to her daughter. One year later, she became a client at Praxis Pilates Studio in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, where she instantly fell in love with Pilates training. That same year, Alyson traveled to Polestar Pilates in Miami, Florida where she received Rehabilitation Training, and became a certified Pilates Instructor, and also received certification at Bodyworks Fitness in Raleigh, North Carolina. She returned to South Carolina where she worked at the Praxis Studio in as an instructor.
In 2000, Alyson relocated to the beautiful island of Palm Beach, Florida where she opened Sunset Pilates Fitness. She has conducted various workshops throughout the country, including Florida, South Carolina, and Arizona, while also continuing her own education. Invited by Pilates Elder Lolita San Miguel to be one of the first 12 to attend the Mater's Mentor Certification Program, Alyson became certified as a 2nd Generation Master Instructor. Lolita is of only one of two people that Joseph Pilates personally certified before he passed away in 1967.
Alyson is very passionate about art of sculpting the body through a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training, which improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. Like Lolita, Alyson is a strong believer that each client’s workout should be customized by their body type and skill set.

Yes, Sean Gallagher is at it again. After losing the Pilates trademark in an historic federal court decision, Sean's now suing over the social media sharing of historical Pilates images that he purchased.
This is a clear example of Brené Brown's power over vs. power with, as was his whole approach to the Pilates trademark - he doesn't understand why he should allow his competition to use the images.
Here I share my take on the first lawsuit, how it divided the Pilates community, and what we need to do now to move forward in a strong and collaborative way.

Today's episode is juicy! In the Pilates world, we have started discussing the questions of whether we can effectively teach Pilates to clients online, train teachers online, and offer effective continuing education online. The pandemic also brought the discussion of state licensing to the forefront, when Pilates studios weren't allowed to open as quickly as larger gyms.
Matthew J. Brownstein knows a lot about these topics. Matthew is the CEO of Anahat Education Group and the Executive Director of the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy, which he successfully moved online and received state licensing.
Of course, we also dive into healing, how to work with our clients, and why it's important to make sure we heal ourselves as well. I really loved our conversation, and I know you will too!

Welcome back for Part 2 of my discussion with Dr. Sam Slattery, author of The Body Cooperative. Hubby & I have know Dr. Sam fr over a decade. He was a big part of our medical team when we lived in Turks & Caicos, and has always been a science-based, no nonsense, and very caring kind of guy.
We continue our talk about the essential elements of human health, weight, nutrition, exercise, stress, and sleep. In this episode, we talk a bit more about exercise, the problems with sugar, how we've been lied to about health and wellness, and why our gut biome is so important.
I think you'll find that his approach makes a lot of sense, and is easy to implement.

Bio:
Dr. Sam Slattery is a highly respected and trusted physician with over 40 years experience on the front line of medical care. A practical and pragmatic doctor, he is recognized for translating his extensive knowledge into a caring and empathetic approach to helping individuals achieve their best health.
Trained in medicine and surgery at St Thomas’s Hospital, London, qualifying in 1984, Dr. Sam has a fundamental belief that all things are connected and that the human body must be viewed form the perspective of an ecosystem, a collective rather than separate parts and systems. The result of this line of thinking made him one of the earlier proponents of the biopsychosocial medical model.
His approach is supported by the science of psychoneuroimmunology, and his knowledge of immunology, neurology and psychology is extensive. These disciplines are all connected in the gut and through the gut-brain access. His new book, The Body Cooperative presents a novel and ground breaking approach to managing health.
Most recently he has been working in the NHS as an Associate Specialist in Gastroenterology with a specific interest in functional bowel disorders including functional chest pain and globus.
Not only has he had an interesting career in medicine working across a broad range of specialities and championing functional and wholistic approaches to the care of patients, but he is also an experienced large and small boat sailor and pilot flying many different aircraft including jets and gliders. In addition to his medical degree, he holds Masters degrees in Aviation Safety Systems and Human Factors, and Gastroenterology and Nutrition.

Catching up with my dear friend Sunni Almond, founder of Going More Joe®, is always a treat! I've taught Sunni, taught with and for Sunni, and always find her to be funny, refreshing, and very real.
Sunni has been teaching Pilates for over 20 years, and she stays a student studying with the most gifted and solidly trained classical Pilates teachers. She created Going More Joe®, an educational resource for Pilates teachers on FB, and she holds educational workshops to share the Pilates wealth.
Sunni loves and rescues giant breed dogs, she has 3 grandkids that own her heart, and has a passion for painting on anything from walls (murals) to furniture (decorative stuff), and yes, canvases also.
She's done everything from actress/dancer & mime to stand-up comedy, was on the Executive Board of Wishes For Children for 11 years, and survived Save Your Life Sundays (what she called skydiving with her husband a long while back).
Sunni is currently a Mentor with Master Peak Pilates Teacher Clare Dunphy's Elevate program.
If you'd like a free copy of Sunni's little manual, The Nuts & Bolts of Classical Pilates,* just shoot her an email at studio_s@icloud.com mentioning this podcast, and she'll send you a link!*

Over the past decade, too many talented teachers in the Pilates industry have stopped teaching because of burn-out, debilitating stress, imposter syndrome, and lack of confidence.
Luckily, there are Pilates teachers like Tania Huddart, who are committed to helping Pilates teachers find their unique voice within our industry so we can keep helping people to make positive changes in their lives through movement.
Tania is the author of Teach Pilates with Confidence (which is available on Kindle Unlimited and in paperback - https://amzn.to/3RNTGKI) and the force behind the Teach Pilates with Confidence monthly membership program. She owns Hearts & Bones Pilates in New Zealand, and is a beacon of light in our often dark industry. Just our discussion about Core Values will help you move forward!

Having confidence in yourself will help your clients have confidence in you too. Confidence is a skill you can learn, and need to practice until it becomes a part of you. You also need to get clear on why you teach Pilates.

So many people seek out Pilates to help with lower back pain.
Make sure you see a medical professional to make sure you are cleared to exercise! If you're not sure why your back hurts, don't expect your Pilates teacher to figure that out. It's not in our scope of practice.
I outline spine anatomy, review the abdominal muscles and what they do, discuss some common causes of lower back pain, why "tech neck" and sitting can lead to lower back pain, and explain the basics of feeling your best supported spine position.
As Romana Kryzanowska (student of Joe Pilates) used to say, "Bad back, keep flat!"

So many Fitness trainers, Pilates teachers, and yoga teachers believe that we need to do new and varied movements all the time.
In fact, I've heard people complain about the basics, calling them boring and questioning their use and effectiveness.
I'm a big believer in the power of basic exercises that strengthen us for the things we need to do in our every day lives.

You may notice that I have very distinct opinions about how to teach Pilates, and especially regarding language and cues.
The three cues I outline in this episode are useless, confusing, and ultimately can harm your clients. Stay away!
If you're a Pilates client, avoid teachers who consistently use these cues no matter how you are feeling.

I'm super excited about this interview! I've known Allan Menezes for about 30 years, and had clients who had great outcomes after working with him while they were working in Australia.
[Note that my audio has some echo. It's just when I speak. I apologize for that, and will fix it before my next interview.]
We talk about all the things - how a rugby injury led Allan to Pilates with Alan Herdman in London, opening the first studio in Australia, being a founding member of the PhysicalMind Institute, his experiences with Sean Gallagher during the trademark lawsuit, the dangers of neutral spine, and some new apparatus that Allan developed during pandemic isolation. We also discuss his new online Reformer course!
If you already have a comprehensive or reformer Pilates certification, you can use code MPRef050 to save 50% (proof of existing certification required) on this Reformer cec course. This exclusive half-price discount (he mentions 10% in the podcast) is just for The Pilates Goddess Podcast listeners!

According to the NY Times, "Falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide". While we can talk about exercise in terms of cardio, strength, and endurance, I find it much more useful to talk to my clients about function.

I talk to so many potential clients who love simple and effective workouts, and steer clear of Pilates. Most recently, someone told me that she went to a studio and left feeling like Pilates had to involve equipment and was way too technical, so she's rather not do Pilates.
Yet, she loves my work and approach, which are distinctly Pilates.
Joe Pilates developed his work to be easy to do and teach! Yes, he was an inventor and came up with all kinds of awesome gizmos, but none of them are required, and most can be mimicked inexpensively (see episode 3).

Pilates is at a crossroads (as is all fitness right now), and we need to decide whether to look ahead and move forward, or focus on the past.
I've been working with Joan Breibart for over 30 years, since I became a founding member of the Institute for the Pilates Method in 1991. Joan is a force, and was the first person Sean Gallagher sued in the infamous trademark lawsuit.
She has a lot to say about where Pilates has been and where it's going, and whether or not you agree, I think you'll find our conversation interesting.
More About Joan:
Grandmother, Inventor, Author & Visionary with 10 US Patents; Responsible for making Pilates a household name; Wellness industry disruptor; Creator of 80Bites. Joan Breibart, Founder of the PhysicalMind Institute, started the Pilates boom in 1991 when she organized The Institute for the Pilates Method which introduced the first Pilates certification program; the first Pilates Matwork video, “Working out the Pilates Way”; and the first Pilates encyclopedias on the Exercise for the MAT and Reformer....
