Blue Barn Farm Podcast: Recent Episodes

Christine

This is our story about life in the rolling California hills. Our seven person family moved out of the city to the country and we now live in a little blue barn home, by a sweet blue little creek, under a big blue sky.

We're back!

My equipment failed on me, and I had to take a short break from podcasting in order to keep up with the online classes I teach.

Now it's time for spring to sprung! March is here! February is fast. You know the old saying "In like a Lion, out like a lamb"? That 's our theme this month because of the weather. I'm curious to see whether it begins with a bang, or goes out with a boom! Either way, we need the rain and we're all praying hard for it to come in seasonal waves.

This month we're really seeing the garden take off. The kids, animals, and plants are all growing in leaps and bounds!

In this episode I talk about various traditions, chores, weather, and some health foods that we tend to increase and include into our January diets and habits.
It's a sleepy month, with confusing weather- half the time I feel like I'm not sure what day or season it is.
The weather can be a mixer, this year we're experiencing a mild winter. I have Spring Fever! I'm currently resisting the temptation to PLANT ALL THE SEEDS NOW~! So I've started a few seedlings in the house.
this month we Trim trees and bushes, pick up sticks(literally) rake the leaves, increase our compost piles, burn branches in a big New Year's Eve bonfire! We amend the soil if necessary.
We begin a new Sour Dough starter, and I make Ginger ale. We clean the inside of our home, this is our "spring cleaning" month! We tidy the yard before...rainy season!
Rainy season tends to snowball, but this is reported to be a mild, dry year unfortunately.
Some health foods to increase in our diet:

  • Thyme Tea
  • Elderberry Syrup
  • Oranges & Lemons
  • Chicken & Bone Broth
  • Honey!!
  • Stinging Nettle Pesto
  • Sunlight,  whenever you can find some!

January is where it all begins. This is our very first podcast. We will reminisce on the past fives years and chat about how our original plans have grown since we first moved out to the country. We'll tell a funny story, and share what the weather is like. We'll also mention our new goals: becoming self sufficient, growing our own food, and adding to our farm's garden, orchards, grove and hopefully pens for up and coming animals!

January is a good time for pruning, but make sure you note where all the poison oak Vines are in the summer months and avoid pruning those when they're dormant .😅
Instead, prune your mulberries and fruits trees, roses, and lilac bushes etc.

It's a sleepy time in the garden, some seedlings can be started indoors. Add to you compost and amend soil as needed. Grow lights are helpful too!

Get ready for rainy, muddier weather coming soon! The rainy season usually begins the first week of January.

Buy seeds now!

Fix fencing before muddy weather arrives.

Make sure your roof is leaking proof 😉
