Rob Roef, buildingSMART Benelux and International Building Domain co-chair, chats to Richard Kelly as they cycle around the fascinating city of Rotterdam. David Ivey is a Senior Associate with HOK and also the co-Chair of buildingSMART International’s Building Domain. In this conversation, we discuss the progressive digitisation of the building industry, the pains of owning and operating, plus whole life value analysis challenges. We also take a brief foray into AI and cosmology.
Arisca Droog discusses her roles at Schiphol Airport and the buildingSMART International Airport Domain. We cover the benefits of digital transformation for the whole life asset management of the airport estate, elephants, and the importance of a fitness regime.
Tristan McDonnell served for many years on the buildingSMART International Infrastructure Room. We discuss this as well as his responsibilities being a Director at ARUP. We recall the experiences developing openBIM standards for infrastructure and the positive impact that IFC 4.3 is going to have on the industry. We also cover the importance of aligning to the bSI Strategic plan and the role this community has with industry thought leadership. Alex Plenty has recently been elected to the buildingSMART International Building Domain Steering Committee. He discusses how openBIM standards are needed to improve buildings and infrastructure from the perspective of a new generation of digitally enabled industry leaders. We cover the responsibilities of tackling carbon reduction through better ways of working enabled by digital data sharing and the challenges of making decisions about how to maintain our elderly homes. He’s looking forward to promoting new projects at buildingSMART and bringing more people together to collaborate on delivery.

This week I interview Patrick MacLeamy, Chairman, buildingSMART International. Patrick practiced architecture for 50 years at HOK, one of the top 10 largest architecture/engineering firms in the world. He began there as a “junior designer” and worked his way up, serving as HOK’s CEO and Chairman from 2003-2017. As CEO, Patrick led HOK’s transformation from a firm that struggled to pay its bills and was close to breaking apart, to one that is consistently profitable, with a company culture where people help each other to succeed.
Patrick is best known for what some call the “MacLeamy Curve”, one of the most commonly cited concepts for researchers touting the benefits of Building Information Modeling (BIM). You may also know Patrick from the phrase BIM BAM BOOM.
