Hey everyone, Nathan here, President of Saybrook University. Welcome to another episode of Saybrook Insights. A recent article in the Biz Journals called out the fact that more and more businesses are turning to apps, coaches, and engagement to support employee health, well-being, and loyalty - in essence, creating a set of differentiators for job seekers looking for the whole shebang when it comes to work-life balance. As per the article:

"Some may think the current struggles employers face with finding qualified talent was a consequence of the pandemic. But consider the end of 2019, when unemployment was at a near-historic low of 3.6%. Finding top talent was a real struggle. By the next quarter, the pandemic sent millions home to work - or forced layoffs as business performance slid. Whether the great resignation, great retirement, or the unforeseen consequences of billions of dollars in stimulus money sent to idled workers, companies struggled to retain existing employees or find new ones. Underlying this transformation was an already growing desire among employees to work at “employers of choice” - organizations with a reputation for paying well, nurturing a culture employees could embrace, and providing benefits that drove health, wellness and peace of mind. The best in the marketplace found success in creating healthy and engaging corporate cultures."

The big takeaways from the article stressed several areas, including paying larger portions of health benefits for employees to mental health apps and tapping into a wellness coaching model one city uses that support employees in their wellness goals, future planning, and the like. This last piece is of particular interest to me here in that having a coach - someone to encourage, to hold us accountable - makes such a difference in reaching our goals. At a very basic level, in my health journey, a close friend of mine teamed up for three years to lose weight in a different, mindful, and healthful way. Because of this mutual support, we were able to achieve our goals, hold each other accountable, and share in our successes and failures. Now that's an oversimplification of the wellness coaching concept, but in short, it demonstrates the point that such an approach can have a powerful impact. But what about more formal wellness coaching? How does it work? Is there training involved? What is the research that backs it up?

Enter Dr. Julie Cerrato, a faculty member in our College of Integrative Medicine and Health Sciences and specialization director for our Wellness Coaching specialization. She's known across our university as deeply dedicated to the work of wellness coaching and its integration into various programs. What's also pretty outstanding is the success she's seen over the years and the students that have benefitted as a result. I'm hoping to learn much more about the whole coaching phenomenon...All right - let's get to it with Dr. Julie Cerrato.

Grief. Death and dying. Most of us have experienced the death of a loved one, a close friend, or a relative. The range of emotions one can feel ranges from emptiness to searing pain. What, then, is grief all about? Why do we have more acute feelings in some instances than others? How do we address the existential aspects of death while ensuring an honoring of the other in the fullest possible way? And, importantly, what can we do to be better stewards of the death and dying process? Serious questions to be sure…

Gina and I first talked about grief in one of the very first episodes of this podcast. Today, she's built an incredible specialization that looks at death and dying and our work in that space uniquely, holistically, and humanistically. We're going to cover some fascinating territory, including a range of other topics in which she is leading the way!

Over the past year and a half, we've all been touched by the flurry of political posturing resulting in everything from "woke-ism" to critical race theory to trans rights. Despite all of this hyper-posturing, one thing is for certain; there are real people - scores of young kids to adults from marginalized populations - caught in the crossfire of these debates. And these very real people deserve to be heard, listened to, and supported, including mental health access! Our mental health infrastructure, while increasingly better, still has a long way to go. From the dearth of Black and Brown psychotherapists to the increasing need for LGBTQIA+ therapists and mental health support, much work is needed to support the health and well-being of our communities.

Enter Dr. Alfonso Ferguson, a faculty member in the department of Counseling. Though he is still early-ish in his career as both a counseling professional and academic, Alfonso seems to have circled the globe and back with his varied efforts and accomplishments. I am particularly interested in learning more about his work in diversity and intersectionality, specifically as it applies to counseling and how institutions and organizations are managing, especially today. We will also dig into his work with marginalized populations, specifically BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals. What's the current state, and where does he see this heading into the future? We will cover a lot of territory in this interview - this is one not to be missed.

Buchman oversaw a remarkable period of transformation and growth during his tenure as president of Saybrook from 2006 to 2009. Today’s episode of Saybrook Insights features the beginning of several university trustee spotlights in which we dig in with Board members about their backgrounds, their work in the community, and a little exploration as to why they joined the Saybrook Board of Trustees. Carmen and I had a wonderful discussion with Angelina Salazar, a newly elected trustee who joined us in the Fall of 2020. She is the CEO of the Western Healthcare Alliance and is passionate about rural healthcare, healthcare access, and ensuring that as many people who need healthcare can get it. She’s a visionary leader with strong ties to Southern California and to her current home state of Colorado. As she notes, we have much work to do nationwide where healthcare is concerned generally; and specifically, our rural communities are just as in need of excellent healthcare delivery as are our urban and suburban centers. Angelina and her team of dedicated hospital executives and practitioners are in fact doing the work to expand and enhance rural healthcare across America today as evidenced by the WHA. Great ideas around innovation and opportunity abound in this episode! Enjoy!

Ep. 10, Season 4: Today, organizational and leadership consultant Kelly Soifer stopped by to speak with Carmen and I about her incredible work helping leaders and organizations achieve their best potential. She offers several really important insights about what it takes to lead, how organizations need to think about leadership, and the importance of identifying one’s strengths to maximize effectiveness at home, at work and beyond. She’s down to earth, clear-headed, and offers insights that make you go “now if I would have only thought of that 10 years ago!” I think you’ll enjoy listening to Kelly as much as we enjoyed recording the episode.

Kelly Soifer's Bio (Visit Kelly's website at www.ksleadershipdevelop.me

Hi, I'm Kelly Soifer (pronounce it like "Surfer" with a Brooklyn accent!) I come to you with with 35 years of experience in leadership and management development. I have ongoing expertise with college students & Millennials, churches, non-profits, academic institutions, business & intercultural contexts. I'm an active practitioner and coach in Strengths Finder (Activator, Strategic, Maximizer, Individualization, Input are my top five) & Covey's 7 Habits. I also enjoy fostering team building & collaboration and setting up staff training & mentoring. As for a quick biography, I graduated from UCSB in 1979 with a degree in English literature. I am also conversationally bilingual. After working for a year in research and development in the private sector, I came on staff with Young Life, a nonprofit that works with teenagers. I became the regional director and supervised staff and programs from San Luis Obispo down to Ventura. (1984-1994). After that, I worked with a church from 1994 through 2009. I started several community outreach programs during that time, especially working with underserved populations (homeless, Latino children, Central American families).

Since 2009, I have worked in a variety of contexts, especially in higher education. My main focus has been on internships and leadership development of young adults. I have had over 70 interns and have forged new programs in Southern California, Washington state, and Southern Illinois. I have also been an adjunct faculty member at Westmont College during that entire time. I'm also now currently actively advising TCS Ed System in their leadership development around the country. Bottom line, I love helping organizations, whether they are start-ups, academic institutions, family businesses, non-profits or larger companies, figure out how to develop and maintain pervasive culture that lives among their employees. I like the messy "people" stuff that exists in every entity, large and small. I have always worked with people, and enjoy partnering with leadership and managers to strengthen the soft skills needed to get stuff done, collaborate well, manage interpersonal dynamics, and connect with clients, boards, and investors. Other than that: I've lived in Santa Barbara for 40 years (yessss!!), I drive a scooter or ride a bike instead of a car, and I blog a bit a www.ksleadershipdevelop.me. I look forward to meeting you soon.

Dr. Serafini will no doubt be back to cover these important topics as they remain front of mind in the American healthcare landscape. Dr. Chess returns to the podcast to offer additional insights on leadership from an adaptive leadership framework, discussing ways leaders can be more effective and navigate change in our new world order. She provides unique examples from healthcare and other sectors as key examples.

Dr. Chess' Bio

Mary Kay served as a healthcare executive for multi-state systems for over 30 years. During her tenure of also working with NGOs, global businesses and community officials to create systems, unique partnerships and products, she was intrigued that well-intended interventions often delivered the same results with minimal change. Through national conversations, explorations and a PhD in Transformational Learning and Change, she committed to finding and supporting emerging and experienced leaders willing to pilot innovations, create unusual partnerships, savor conflict and invite ambiguity. This led her to serve with other like-minded colleagues to listen and teach learners in a unique Leadership and Management program at Saybrook University. She continued her belief that competitors can collaborate and that healthcare network leaders, when equipped with systems thinking, offer resilient sustainable practices and engagements to serve diverse communities. Indeed, when courage and laughter meet over thorny issues, innovation and transformation emerge. More now, than ever.

In today’s meditation, Dr. Shannon Sims leads to pay special attention to the mood or emotional quality of the mind as we scan through the body.  Sometimes it can be hard to get a sense of what the mood is and it doesn’t matter if we don’t have an answer, it’s about the process of simply observing how we feel, which can be useful not only as we meditate, but also as we move through the rest of our day.

Dr. Donna Rockwell facilitates today's Mindful Moment. This is a brief introduction to Shamatha-Vipashyana Meditation, a Tibetan practice focused on developing Shamatha: “calm abiding” or calmness, followed by Vipashyana: the capacity for “insight” or self-understanding. Through mindful awareness of the breath, we become more aware of the gaps between breaths, and the spaces between thoughts. We slow down, less prone to be carried aways by fearful or negative emotions. We are left more clear, and find that we are actually in the here-and-now of the present moment. Our natural, innate intelligence arises from this space.
